Embracing the Gap: Finding Presence and Creativity in Uncertainty

Send us a textDo you ever go through times in your life where you lose your orientation?  Where you don't know exactly how you feel or what to do next?  In this episode I reflect on recent feelings of emotional exhaustion and a lack of creativity, a certain blankness that I connect to the concept of the "gap"  from contact improvisation. This gap represents a state of uncertainty and disconnection that can be uncomfortable, but also an opportunity for curiosity and growth. And is a state that we experience fairly often but often avoid or fill with habitual patterns.Drawing from Nancy Stark Smith's teachings, I explore practical ways to embrace this space, reject habitual patterns, and develop a conscious, present approach to life's uncertainties. The episode emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the gap, building capacity to be in it, and letting authentic experiences emerge. In this Episode:Understanding 'The Gap' in Improvisational DanceNavigating the Gap: Choices and StrategiesPersonal Reflections and StoriesBuilding Capacity to Embrace the GapReferences:Smith, N. In this episode we bring you Anya Kaats. Anya spent a decade working in various roles within the natural products / wellness industry, before realizing that “wellness” culture was making her sick. In 2016, Anya radically restructured her life to focus on a more holistic approach to health, prioritizing authenticity, purpose, community, somatic, spirituality, and psychological well being. After a lifetime battling digestive and hormonal health issues, a truly holistic approach to “ancestral health” is what finally eliminated them. In this episode, first released on Seth Dellinger's Move with Seth YouTube channel, John Vervaeke, Ken Manheimer, and Seth Dellinger explore the concept of "ecology of practices" through the lens of contact improvisation. They discuss the modern "meaning crisis" caused by societal disconnect and fragmentation, advocating for shared agency and transjective participation to address these issues. Manheimer's experience in contact improvisation reveals its potential for co-creation and mutual discovery, emphasizing the need to extend rationality beyond traditional bounds. This conversation showcases contact improvisation as a vital practice for fostering sacred participation and confronting the meaning crisis.   Seth Dellinger is a movement practitioner, embodied dialogue facilitator, and the host of the Move with Seth podcast. He is passionate about cultivating presence, empathy, and meaningful connections through mindful movement and conversation.   Ken Manheimer is a long-time practitioner and coordinator of contact improvisation in Washington, D.C. He is also a computer programmer with a deep interest in the intersection of movement, dialogue, and personal growth. How might we connect more deeply with the Divine via dance? What can water teach us about the flow of life? And what happens when we combine the two? On the latest episode I explore this rich topic with Venezuelan contemporary dance performer, choreographer, and teacher Juliana Mendonca. Juliana is an innovative bodyworker influenced by Latin Traditional Dances, Butoh, Contact Improvisation and Physical Theater. In particular, water has represented a very important element for her to understand herself, and Juliana has dedicated many years to creating projects and performances inspired by the element of water. These include the music and dance company Raíz de Agua, La Naciente, Drop & Drought, Sono Somatic and most recently, Liquidanza – a relaxation and dance practice based in the water. In this episode we discuss:Juliana's early, formative experiences with nature, and why they made a deeper impression on her than her experiences within the Catholic churchJuliana's journey through formal dance training and into more experimental, flowing forms of dance, such as the Japanese Butoh dance methodHer relationship with water, including what it's taught her, and how she understands it as holding feminine energy that can benefit us allHow we can all deepen our awareness and understanding of the sacred nature of waterShow Notes If you'd like to know whose ancestral tribal lands you currently reside on, you can look up your address here: https://native-land.ca/You can also visit the Coalition of Natives and Allies for more helpful educational resources about Indigenous rights and history.I'm so excited to announce the launch of the Home to Her Academy, a school dedicated to seekers of Sacred Feminine wisdom! As Artistic Director of Amalgama Dance Company for 7 years, I started to introduce the somatic approach in my creative processes. Our guest in this episode is Zac Jones - Heal Yourself and MoveZac comes from an incredibly rich movement background: a graduate of the Australian Ballet School, Soloist with the Queensland Ballet and the Expressions Dance Company. He's a second degree black belt in Aikido, first degree black belt and teacher in Filipino Arnis, and continues to study Kung Fu and Russian Systema. Zac also holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Choreography from the Victorian College of the Arts. Zac was Strength Coach at the Australian Ballet School for five years and has studied body mindfulness and somatic practices, including Continuum, Idiokinetics, Skinner Release Body-mind Centering and Contact Improvisation. Drawing on his vast range of experiences, Zac founded Heal Yourself and Move in 2014 and now teachers into dance schools around the world, focusing on movement, intelligence, relaxation, and training the body to be the teacher. Zac welcome to the show.[1:59] Zac talks about his introduction to Pilates around 1995 studying at the Australian Ballet Centre in Southbank, Melbourne, and training with Andrew Baxter, who was one of the early pioneers bringing Pilates to Australia. This was the beginning of understanding how to link body concepts to find technical breakthrough in a high-level skill pursuit,[5:34] Zac recalls his first impressions of working with Andrew in a small group setting with some ballet demi-gods, and Pilates giving him a sense of alignment, engagement, and perfect tuning.[11:14] When Zac receives a strong grounding through Paul Cini's APMA focus on clinical application and the connection of anatomy and physiology. He also credits Wendy Smith (Studio 303) and Steph Glickman (Armature Pilates).[16:12] Zac describes other influences on his teaching – the somatic approach, Franklin, Ideokinetics, Skinner Releasing, Body Mind Centring and Continuum, and Feldenkrais.[17:01] Bruce asks how martial arts and Aikido added to the blend of influences.[22:31] Zac describes his dislike of set programming and how it feels antithetical to his personal experience of Pilates. Joseph Pilates was a continual innovator.[26:45] Zac gets excited with the ongoing process of working on solutions for people or himself and getting breakthroughs.[27:51] Bruce questions Zac about more recent developments in his teaching and Zac talks about going online and back into the dance world.[32:17] A big discovery for Zac has been finding out that change is possible instantaneously; in particular, release from tension.[34:57] Zac looks to what he wants to do in the future and explains the importance of listening to intuition.[36:12] Bruce asks how musical percussion influences Zac's work.Heal Yourself and MoveWebsiteInstagramFacebookJoin Friday group training callsBook a call with ZacThe Pilates Diaries PodcastWebsiteFacebookInstagramEpisode SponsorsTRIMIOPilates Reformers Australia10% off with min. $100 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21Whealthy-Life10% off - use PILATESDIARIESToeSox Australia15% off with min. $49 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21

Simon Thakur is based in New South Wales, Australia. Ancestral Movement is his project, his “big idea” that has come from more than twenty years of practice and research across a wide range of fields. He has studied the natural sciences since he was in high school and through university – covering the basics of physics and mathematics and going deeper into chemistry, biology, physiology and anatomy (including a year of weekly cadaver studies), exercise science, nutrition, biochemistry, molecular cell biology and molecular genetics, immunology, and neuroscience, as well as psychology, anthropology, archaeology, sociology, history and religious studies. During all of this time he has also been learning and practicing predominantly Eastern traditions of martial arts and mind-body transformation. He was obsessed with Yoga and martial arts as a child and read everything he could find in the public library (back in Dunedin, New Zealand, where he grew up). He did some Judo as a kid, some boxing and kickboxing as a teenager, then went on a year-long student exchange to Thailand when he was 17, knowing only that he wanted to practice Muay Thai and learn about Buddhism and meditation. He ended up living with his Muay Thai teacher, and ordained as a monk during by the end of his time there at the age of 18, staying for a wonderful month at Wat Tong Pai near Chumphon in south Thailand, and a beautiful couple of weeks at Suan Mokh forest retreat centre near Surat Thani. He was introduced to Buddhism through the works of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, whose incredible 550 page translation and commentary on the Buddha's Anapanasati Sutta (discourse on mindfulness based in the in- and out-breaths) is still his most treasured meditation manual, which he returns to every year for further study. Since then he has studied Japanese Jujitsu, Capoeira, Chinese internal martial arts and Qigong, Yoga and Yoga therapy, Feldenkrais, Butoh, Contact Improvisation, Pilates, Kit Laughlin's Stretch Therapy and Monkey Gym, parkour, smatterings of Russian Systema and Mixed Martial Arts, and more recently Brazilian Jujitsu, freestyle wrestling, and Filipino Eskrima (also called Kali, or Arnis). He has lived for close to ten years in Asia – in Thailand, India, Japan, China and Taiwan – and six months in Brazil, studying and learning from the best people he could find, always trying to get as close as he could to the source of the arts and traditions that he found most interesting.

She teaches CI classes in Boulder, CO, yoga and pilates online and regularly travels nationally and internationally to teach. Her long time practices of authentic movement, yoga and pilates and her love of nature are important influences on her dancing and teaching. She facilitates women's somatically based transformational workshops online and in person. She is a certified Hakomi therapist, certified perinatal somatic attachment therapist and certified Feminine Power transformational coach and facilitator. She is currently training to be a biodynamic breath and trauma release practitioner. She delights in exploring and discovering new depths to contact improvisation and related disciplines and is particularly interested in the intersection of physics and expression and the mind/body relationship. She is dedicated to supporting her fellow humans to be the most amazing embodied beings that we are! www.aliciagrayson.com In this conversation, Alicia reflects on the principle of knowing where the earth is at all times in Contact Improvisation, and in all movement. She discusses creativity being an emergence as opposed to something to control or force. She also shares how something deeply familiar can still feel brand new. And, Alicia and Kyle talk about their mutual love of mistakes, accidents, and imperfections.

She is one of the founders of Contact Improvisation and in the last 50 years, has been touring the globe to teach and share her research on what she calls relational intelligence. Nita holds a PHD in Performance Studies and her writing investigates ecological actions of tactile attention and the creative potentials present in entangled relations. I met Nita in 2014 at the Austrian contact festival. The way we move is a tool for communication, how we embody our thoughts and emotions. Moving well is an art that takes time and involvement, requires learning and support. Our wellness can be profoundly affected by how well we move and yet practitioners who address movement are not adequately covered by our Medical System. So, perhaps we have conceptualized our medical system on the wrong premise. Instead of only healing us when we are sick, perhaps we should consider greater financial support for keeping us well. One of the interviews I’m most proud of was conducted in late 2007 with dancer-choreographer Jen Abrams. I’m delighted to bring this episode out of the archives and present it in Body and Soul’s new home. When our "half-hour" interview concluded, we were amused to see that it had actually lasted a full hour! But that's what it takes to tell even part of the story of her work with the WOW Cafe Theater collective, an historic and essential part of the still-hearty cultural abundance of Manhattan's rapidly-changing East Village. Listening to Jen talk about her background in contact improvisation, I discovered a fascinating connection between contact improvisation and the "open source," grassroots nature of WOW. Her intensity and strength as an artist working in dance, theater and poetry are more than matched by the tenacity of this theater collective and space that she so clearly loves. And here’s her bio: Jen Abrams’ work has been presented at BAX, HERE, Dixon Place, the Nuyorican Poets Café, and the Bowery Poetry Club, as well as at WOW Café Theater, where she has been an active member for seven years. She has produced three full-length concerts of her own work at WOW: Itch (2000), Saturn Return (2001), and Surfacing (2002), as well as two shared bill evenings: As I Was Saying (2004, with Risa Jaroslow and Eva Lawrence) and Asunder (2006 with Clarinda Mac Low and Tara O’Con.). She was a 2005 BAX space grantee, and is co-curator and co-producer with Sally Silvers of TalkTalk WalkWalk, an annual poetry and dance festival. Her choreographic work has also been seen at WOW in the stage plays The Skriker by Caryl Churchill, All Eyes, All Sides – Beckett One Acts, Naomi Wallace’s Slaughter City, and Moira Cutler’s MetaMeshugenaMorphosis and Sonofabitch Stew, all with Dogsbody Theater. The Village Voice has called her work “quintessentially New York,” and her performances “convincing no matter what [she chooses] to do.” Jen has studied the form of Contact Improvisation for twelve years, beginning at Oberlin College, the birthplace of the form. She relocated to New York City from Chicago, where she presented and performed in five full-length concerts with the contact improv-based company she co-founded, Limbic Fix. She is classically trained as an actor, and performed in plays throughout Chicago before moving to New York City to focus on movement-based performance. She is also a writer, and has given readings of her work at St. Mark’s Poetry Project, Halcyon, and Bar 13. By day, Jen works as a fundraiser for a small poetry press, and serves as Managing Director for Risa Jaroslow & Dancers. She also teaches Contact Improv through Movement Research. Her roots in theater and immersion in literature inform her dances. Visit Jen Abram's Web site at http://www.jenabrams.org.
