Cultisti! Ci siamo! Let's go.Buon ascolto e come sempre.. Ci vediamo dall'altra parte!

This episode we’re going to dive into some of my personal experience with mental health and how I overcame them. Disclaimer - Zack and I are not trained medical/mental health professionals. This episode is about my personal experiences with mental health and how it’s affected me in regards to content creation and MtG. Please do not take anything said here as official advice. If you are having mental health issues please reach out to a professional. (https://www.mentalhealth.gov/get-help/immediate-help) Main Topic - #MtGMentalHealth My story - I’ve suffered with mental health issues for as long as I remember. It all started when I was in junior high with depression, with anxiety becoming an issue in college, and most recently with a diagnosis of being bi polar. I’ve tried a lot of medicines, therapy, and just white knuckling it while trying to hold on. Currently I see a therapist roughly every other week, but sometimes more, and I see a psychiatrist every month. Hook your friends into playing with you. Once you’ve hooked your friends into playing, roll to the LGS together. Be open to new people joining your group and becoming friends with them. I’ve def done it by myself though. I remember that’s how I met Ryan. I was casually collecting World of Warcraft cards and one day when I was at my local comic store I saw that people were playing in tournaments with each other. I called the store to find out when tournaments happened and just showed up. This was very difficult for me to do, but I really wanted to get back into playing cards and make new friends. Big tournaments Magic - I’ve always been into card games and have played several over the course of my life at varying levels of competitiveness. This was not something easy for me to do, but I found tricks that helped me get over my anxiety and play. Eventually the WoW card game was discontinued and I started getting curious about MtG again. My current roommate, Brando Calrission, and I had vowed to stay away from Magic due to price concerns, but eventually got sucked back in with some Planeswalker Decks. I remember at the time I was also playing a Star Wars card game and went to spend a week with a friend in Houston who used to be a big MtG player. He told me I should look into playing something called Elder Dragon Highlander. Not long after I got back Ryan and I were talking and he mentioned he and some friends had been playing EDH. I started playing for a while, but due to the anxiety caused by the size of the card pool and not knowing what a lot did I sort of backed away. Eventually I came back to EDH when Ryan started a league that I ended up running for a few years. I know that was a lot of build up, but that brings me to the podcast. Ryan at the time needed a third host for the podcast and asked me to fill the position. At first I was very nervous about it because I felt like I didn’t know enough about the cards or at that point EDH to coherently discuss EDH on a weekly basis. I agreed to do it though, because I had wanted to do a podcast in general for several years, but added the caveat if I didn’t like it, I’d stay until they could find someone to replace me. I’m not going to lie, it was hard to get over the anxiety and at times I’m still very anxious about recording because I don’t feel like anyone would want to hear what I have to say. The number one thing that has gotten me through this adventure is my partnership with Ryan. I couldn’t ask for a better co-collaborator in a creative endeavour. He’s always been my biggest cheerleader, fan, and advocate. When I feel self conscious about things he’s there for me. He’s always willing to listen. The second thing that has gotten me through content creating are the listeners. Nothing makes me happier than to hear a “good episode” from someone and over the years some of our listeners have become some of my best friends. Content Creation Covid has definitely been a blow to me depression and anxiety wise, as it has been to a lot of people. I personally have to actively fight this. I stay in contact with friends and I find ways to busy myself. Despite having Ryan and an internet full of friends, I often feel isolated, sad, and bored. One of the ways I find to keep myself busy is to play mtg via spelltable. Moo and I started a stream to play more and to get to play with / meet more people. Ryan and I try to get in as many patron games as we can too. Magic isn’t the only thing though. I’ve tried to take up new hobbies, such as bread making, and focusing more on my aquarium too. Covid and Magic during Covid Mental Health is a big deal, even if you don’t suffer from depression or anxiety, you need to make time for your own mental health. There’s no shame in seeking help. You’re discovering the BEST format in Magic: the Gathering (We maaaay be biased, but hey) Who is this episode for? We assume that you are at least slightly familiar with Magic. Maybe you played a long time ago, maybe you’re brand new to the game, but you at least know the basic rules. Also, we think veteran players might enjoy listening to this episode, and we certainly hope that anyone out there will send this episode in particular to new players they teach, or anyone who is interested in learning about the greatest Magic format. Main Topic - New to Commander What is Commander? Arguably the MOST popular Magic format of all time! 40 life, multiplayer format, where you have a Legendary creature as your Commander Example: You choose Meren of Clan Nel Toth This means you can play Black Cards, Green Cards, Black AND Green cards, and any number of artifacts you want. You cannot play with White, Blue or Red cards. To further clarify you cannot play with Terminate because it’s got Red in it’s color identity Hybrid mana cards (Ex. Kitchen Finks) are both GREEN and WHITE in terms of color identity. So, Kitchen Finks cannot go in a mono-green deck. Your Commander’s Color Identity determines what cards you’re allowed to play. This means that you can only play ONE of each non-basic land card Commander is a 100 card SINGLETON format SO MANY! Cards all throughout the history of Magic There is a Banned list maintained at: http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php It’s actually a pretty small list, 39 cards at the time of this recording (In ALL the history of Magic) What cards are you allowed to play with? Why is Commander so great? It’s a SOCIAL format! Commander can be a time when you get together with your friends and just have a good time and laugh etc. I’ve made some life-long friends playing Commander The community is Amazing! We constantly see newcomers welcomed with open arms, and folks are always happy to help people become part of this community Ryan likes to play with Other People’s Cards, and built a whole Mono-red deck around it Personal expression! Commander is a format where players can really express themselves through the decks they build and how they play It’s the Battlecruiser format of Magic! Folks can play with the biggest, baddest cards, and there is more game space to have crazy things happen that wouldn’t in a normal game of Magic. Your skill in politics can be just as important as the power level of your deck. This leads to a natural balancing effect, where the power dynamics shift as the game goes on You can play super casual, all the way up to cEDH (Explain here that the format started off as Elder Dragon Highlander, a.k.a EDH, and that cEDH stands for Competitive EDH) It’s important to find a playgroup that fits your style, and power level. There are different levels of power when it comes to Commander How to get started Start with a precon! There’s no better time than now Find out when Commander Night is at your LGS. Decide who your commander is going to be. This can be a favorite legendary character from days past or it could just be a commander who has a mechanic you find interesting. Decide a plan of attack Look for cards that synergize with your commander or just look fun to play with. Use sites like Scryfall to do searches for specific things (ie. Landfall) If you’re coming up short of a full 100 you can do internet research on sites like edhrec and archidekt for deck lists Remember this is your deck, so build it in a way that will be fun for you and those you play with. How to decide what cards to put in Zack’s steps to make your first commander deck Tips for a new player Tips from Discord and Twitter go here Ramp and Card draw are the building blocks of Commander Briefly Define Ramp and Card Draw With 40 starting life total, you can usually afford to spend the first few turns ramping. This will allow you to cast bigger cards, more quickly, and have a bigger impact on the game You are usually playing against 3 other opponents. So, for every card you draw, your opponents are collectively drawing 3. Having more card draw can lessen this difference. There are many reasons to want Ramp and Card Draw. Whole episodes can be devoted to these topics, but this is a good place to start Especially for new players coming from other formats that is a weird and unintuitive thing but it's important to understand this or there will be some social tensions and feel bads How the social contract works. Mana curve matters. Build a deck with a game plan and a direction Threat assessment, or more accurately, how to effectively deal with problem permanents/spells without drawing a ton of hate. How to build a solid mana base/ramp package. Settle on a list before buying singles. The stack Priority Play removal! Especially for artifacts and enchantments Board Wipes are important, but so is single target removal It’s OK to take time to READ all the cards! Don’t be intimidated by this, even myself as a veteren player, I have to read a card just about every turn of the game! There’s a LOT of cards, and this can be kinda scary, but it’s OK to NOT know everything Resources for learning more So. You’re interested is peeked, and you want to dive deep into this wonderful format, where can you go to learn more? Edhrec.com http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php (pay particular attention to Philosophy of Commander and the social contract: http://mtgcommander.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=19170 ) Podcasts: Command Zone, Commanderin, Commander’s Brew, CMDR Central Youtube - Game Knights, Jumbo Commander, Commander’s Quarters Scryfall Summary Commander is great! And now is a great time to be a Commander player with the new C19 decks just having come out. It’s a fun, Social format, to share with friends If you are new to Commander, let us know! The Bad Boys of Magic have partnered up once again to discuss the cards that have been spoiled so far for the upcoming Commander 2016 set. Tyson, Gingie and Tim discuss what these cards can do and what currently existing cards we have that would cause these commanders to crack the EDH format wide open.
The bad boys of Magic have returned once again with special guest and super fan, Brady, to help us discuss cards that we feel are too powerful for EDH/Commander and what we feel were cards that were banned nonsensically for a completely casual format. We discuss cards such as Primeval Titan, Cyclonic Rift, Sol Ring, Deadeye Navigator, Mana Drain, Omniscience and many many more.
Perhaps the most popular casual variant of Magic is EDH which stands for Elder Dragon Highlander. Thanks for listening. Send feedback to The Magic Minute by emailing themagicminute@gmail.com.
