On this week's show, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run, spend quality time with new records from Superchunk and Charley Crockett and spin fresh tracks from Ivy, The Last Dinner Party and Margo Price. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

Writer, director, producer, and actor Macon Blair joins us this week to talk about his fascinating career, and his bold new take on a cult classic: the unrated remake of The Toxic Avenger (in theaters August 29).You've seen Macon on screen in films like Blue Ruin, Green Room, Thunder Road, and even Oppenheimer. He also won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize with his directorial debut I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, starring Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. Now, he's back with a gooey genre shift...reimagining Lloyd Kaufman's radioactive hero for a new generation while honoring the messy, subversive spirit of Troma. We dig into Macon's creative path from Murder Party with Jeremy Saulnier all the way to working with Elijah Wood and Peter Dinklage on this bonkers new Toxie. Along the way, we talk about practical effects (yes, intestines are involved), absurd kills that didn't make the cut, the challenges of redesigning an iconic monster, and why The Toxic Avenger might actually be the perfect antidote to the Marvel-ification of movies.and of course we ask the important question… when can we expect 2oxic 2venger: Toxie vs Dracula vs the Unicorn's Horn in Space? If you love cult cinema, superhero parodies, or just a good old fashioned over the top practical effect, you don't want to miss this conversation sooo...Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage (all socials)Sean: @hypocrite.ink (IG/TikTok), @hypocriteink (Twitter/X)Enjoyed this episode? In reporting his 2012 New York Times bestselling biography Bruce-widely regarded as the "definitive biography of Bruce Springsteen" (Asbury Park Press)-celebrated music journalist Peter Ames Carlin gained unprecedented access to Springsteen's inner circle and to The Boss himself. Now, timed to the 50th anniversary of the release of the groundbreaking album, he brings us TONIGHT IN JUNGLELAND: The Making of Born to Run (Doubleday; August 5, 2025; $30), an intimate, behind-the-scenes account, based on brand new reporting, of the writing, recording, and making of one of the most iconic records in rock history. From the opening piano notes of "Thunder Road" to the final outro of "Jungleland," with American anthems like "Born to Run" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" in between, Bruce Springsteen's seminal album, Born to Run, established Springsteen as a creative force in rock and roll. It is indisputably his crowning achievement, which launched him to international superstardom-but it almost never happened.By the spring of 1974, the situation at Columbia Records had become dire for Springsteen. His first two albums had been highly praised but had gained almost no commercial traction. Columbia was not going to pay for a full third album. They agreed to give him enough money to record just one more song; if it sounded like a hit, or even something with a chance of radio play, they'd consider financing a full album. Bruce was determined to craft a song powerful enough to stake the rest of his career on, so he sat on his small bed near the Jersey Shore and picked up his guitar. He listened to the traffic outside his window and envisioned the muscle cars he saw roaring around Asbury Park. Then he pulled some chords out of the air and wrote the words, "Baby, we were born to run."With his back against the wall, Springsteen wrote what has been hailed as a perfect album, a defining moment, and a roadmap for what would become a legendary career. TONIGHT IN JUNGLELAND details the writing and recording of every song on the album, a tortuous process that betrayed the fault lines in Springsteen's psyche and career, even as it revealed the depth of his vision and the power of his determination. It's a journey and a story-from the first harmonica notes of "Thunder Road" and its opening lyric, "The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways," to the "Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge" in "Jungleland," with its massive, theatrical finale of raised and crushed dreams against a backdrop of Springsteen's hopeful and melancholic New Jersey ("There's an opera out on the Turnpike / There's a ballet being fought out in the alley. . . Tonight, in Jungleland")-that combines Carlin's signature narrative style, trademark energy, lush music writing, and intellectual style, with unprecedented access to Bruce himself, his bandmates, and his longtime collaborators.A must-read for any music fan, TONIGHT IN JUNGLELAND takes us inside a hallowed creative process and lets us experience history. But don't take our word for it; let Bruce's own words, told to Carlin, reflect the intimacy of the book's storytelling: "You know, I'm very, very fond of [the album]. And on its anniversaries, I get in a car and I play it from start to finish, and I end up at West End court where I wrote it. Right before the end, right before 'Jungleland.' And I sit there by the curb and I let 'Jungleland' play, as I sit outside the little house I wrote it in."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

It began with the groundbreaking Whiskey Lore podcast, where deep historical research and engaging storytelling brought to light the hidden truths of whiskey's past. This dedication to rewriting whiskey history has culminated in books like The Lost History of Tennessee Whiskey, a deep dive into a centuries-old tradition, and Whiskey Lore: Volume One, which challenges common narratives with meticulously researched stories behind 24 whiskey myths and legends."To find the truth, question everything."Immerse Yourself in 250 Years of Distilleries, Taverns, Teetotallers, and 'Shiners!Think Jack and George are the complete story of Tennessee whiskey? Think again. For far too long, the real history and legacy of Tennessee whiskey has been hidden from whiskey fans. It's a history that not only predates Kentucky Bourbon but also the Whiskey Rebellion. From its early days, it is filled with amazing stories, legends, and villains. The Lost History of Tennessee Whiskey will take you back to the very origins of the spirit and the state.InPart One: History, you'll meet pioneer distillers like David Crockett, Andrew Jackson, and Frederick Stump. It's a unique opportunity to put yourself in their shoes, learn of their struggles, understand the tools and grains they worked with, and get to know the world that surrounded them. This is no pollyannish stroll through the glories of whiskey. Life on the frontier was a struggle and you'll feel it along with the heroes and villains of early Tennessee. You'll also learn about their markets and the taverns they sold to.InPart Two: Lost Distillers, watch as a whiskey industry develops in Tennessee. It's a story that has never been completely told. Tennessee was an early leader in the production of whiskey and its distillers were fiercely loyal to tradition. You'll meet pre-Civil War distillers like Wiley Woodard, William Tolley, and Alfred Eaton. You'll learn the origins of brands and why they were important. You'll get to know the origins of the temperance movement and the difference between a wildcatter and a blind tiger. You'll watch the government try to destroy Tennessee whiskey, feel the sting of bullets during the Putnum County War, and learn the difference between 19th and 20th century moonshiners. You'll also be introduced to great names in Tennessee whiskey that faded away, like Draughon, Gouge, Kelly, Betterton, Fanning, and Woodard, while digging deeper into the histories of Jack Daniel, George Dickel, and Charles Nelson. You'll also learn the origin of the whiskey bottle, whether the Lincoln County Process is really what set Tennessee whiskey apart in the 19th century, and you'll see how Tennessee's great whiskey industry died away in a hail of gunfire.InPart Three: Revival, find out why Jack Daniel wasn't the most important person in the company's history. Learn of the immense struggles distillers went through to bring the industry back. Experience Tennessee's own version of Pappygate, take a ride down Thunder Road, croon with some of the greatest singers and songs in Tennessee, and watch the trailblazers fight tooth and nail to put Tennessee whiskey back on the map.WARNING: This is real history. Be prepared to have your knowledge American whiskey challenged in this first ever, immersive history into the legends, lore, and real world of Tennessee whiskey.

Today on Jewish Studies Unscrolled, we talk about Bruce Springsteen and his iconic song “Thunder Road.” While Springsteen himself isn't Jewish, this song, and his songwriting in general, invites reflections on themes central to Jewish life: tradition, leaving home, and coming back again. We're joined by noted Bruce fans, Park Avenue Synagogue rabbis Elliot Cosgrove and Neil Zuckerman. Drawing on their personal connections to the song and their shared journey through rabbinical training, Cosgrove and Zuckerman unpack the spiritual resonance of Springsteen's work, asking why certain texts—whether Torah or rock lyrics—speak to us anew across the decades.  You can buy Rabbi Cosgrove's book, For Such a Time as This: On Being Jewish Today, here.

Both Yro and Castle Combo are very similar in style and mechanic, so it was nice for us to be able to compare to games against one another. The new Thunder Road expansion is out and this expansion takes you out of the wasteland and into the Demolition Derby arena where more chaos will reign. Maybe that is why they called in Carnival of Chaos. Since there is no finish line, it is nice that there is a “timer” to help end the game and not just wait on elimination of everyone but one player. Finally, there is a look behind the curtain as you will experience the pain that Marty goes through in trying to explain a game to me. We have all had the experience where the game isn't clicking or you are explaining the game and you get nothing but blank stares back.
