Greetings friends! We're taking a little intermission between guest features this week to spend some time chatting about the social contract, and showing consideration in Commander. Inspired by our previous guests the Scrap Trawlers recently, some discussions started around how do we all show kindness in commander, which led to our run through on this episode touching on our perspectives on navigating the social contract in commander, including a little about Rule Zero (we could easily do many more episodes on just that topic), and having healthy discussions to establish expectations in commander games. We run through some ways to make that discussion easier whilst establishing power levels, plus dissecting the difference between power in cards and intent of the player. I’ve heard of leagues that are tailored for higher power decks or leagues tailored to keep the power level for all participants at a lower power level. Rewarding / punishing players for doing certain actions in game ie First Blood (+1) point, Infinite Combo (-2) points This can be done via a point system. What exactly IS a league? Zack and I have, in the past, run a league where we met every other week, and we had a lot of fun doing it A group of us from my LGS have done Pre-Con leagues. I think we did this for C15 & C16. Week 1 is precon as is, every week you get $5 in cards to add, you can bank your money if you don’t want to make any additions. Kept track via paper. These days it’d be super easy to create a google doc to track it all for everyone. Played for about 5 weeks. It’d always be our 1st game of the night then we’d play our “real” decks Max, have you ever been part of a league? Biggest thing I remember from the pre-con leagues was spending a few weeks discussing the point system and budget for each week. @Max - Compromise - You aren’t going to make everyone happy but you can do your best to make it fun for everyone. League Dos and Don’ts Playing for points changes the fundamental way multiplayer Magic is played Will people show up consistently if it’s for casual? If competitive, how will you track standings? (Hint: Spreadsheet!!!) Should your league be casual or competitive? Our experiences with running a league Organizing a league is very similar to organizing something like the Vegas Rotisserie So much fun! A lot of the fun was had around seeing what cards people drafted, etc. Meta-fun! Not quite a league, but man, how much fun was the rotisserie? This should be awesome! Folks at home can definitely do something like this, and it’s the perfect way to stay connected with your playgroup during this pandemic, also, since most of us won’t be playing in stores (Support your LGS if you can!), this is a good way to have an authentic Commander Legends experience We can stream opening card pools, as well as games, how cool is that? This isn't the best news, since the new post-rotation Standard format isn't even THREE DAYS OLD. Also, the cards that seem to be real problem are from the new set, so they didn't get banned. So that's suspect. But also, there's a new Secret Lair that sets a dangerous new precedent for Magic going forward, so we're going to spend a lot of time on that this episode. What do we like least about creating content? Each of us talk about why Ryan - It started as a way to kind of keep a record for my kids (hence the #MtGDad moments every episode). Also, Magic is something I’m very passionate about. Why do we each create content? How much time do we each spend on the content we create each week? PJ Zack - 2ish recording, 2ish editing (4-6 when it’s video), unknown on twitter, various amounts of time for graphic design, various amounts mailing things. 1-hour planning episode with Ryan, 1 hour if writing show notes Ryan - 2ish hours on the night we record, 1 hour planning the show (more if it involves building a deck). 1 hour proofing the show each week. 1 hour uploading the show. There are lots of other various time things as well. Creating content takes time The Magic community is pretty friggin awesome When you create content consistently with another person, you really develop a special bond You get to know a lot of really awesome people, both other content creators, and your listeners/viewers It’s really cool the first time you meet, or interact with someone who you’ve helped make their life better (even if it’s just in some small way) You get to learn...like a LOT. I’ve always been a lifelong learner, and there’s pretty much no end to the stuff you can learn. Audio, video, lighting, web design, how to use social media, technology, woodworking, you name it. What makes creating content worth it? Find a co-host(s) you have chemistry with, who you can trust, who are committed (unless of course you’re doing a 1-person show) Figure out the name. Seriously, take a LOT of time with this. We were almost “Commander Onramp”.(no we weren’t -z) Register the domain, look to see if there is anything else out there, past or present with the same/similar name Get accounts on all of the social media sites, Twitter, Instagram, Gmail account, patreon, Youtube, the sky is the limit here. Also, keep current with new social media things as they come about, and register those accounts. Figure out a schedule you can commit to and BE CONSISTENT we used LogoOrbit, and it can be pretty costly. There are cheaper alternatives out there, fiver, etc etc We placed our initial order for about $150 on April 29th, 2019. We Finished up with them on June 14th, and we must have gone back and forth like 50 times. We think it was worth the time and effort We were willing to spend the time and money on getting a good logo, because this wasn’t our first podcast and we knew we were going to be in it for the long haul. You can always rebrand later, but you definitely want a logo before you ever publish your first episode Get a logo Make your content available EVERYWHERE. We use libsyn to do this. PJ - Anything especially important with YouTube? It will take TIME before you get a regular set of listeners/viewers. Like even more time than you think (probably, I’m sure there are other stories out there about someone becoming an overnight success). Be patient, Be active on social media! It will take a while to get good. Creating content is like any other skill, Playing Guitar, Playing Magic, Sewing, whatever. I know I was SOOOO self-conscious in the beginning. I am, and probably always will be my harshest critic, but you can’t let that stop you if creating content is truly something you want to do. Not every episode will be great. Trust us! However, each episode is likely something you can learn from. If you do this, and constantly strive to get better, you WILL get better over time. What is the stable? It’s a place to keep the decks you play often, up-to-date. This is not for ALL of your decks (unless you only have a few decks) I have like 25 decks, and I’m not proposing to keep up with all of them, I’m proposing that you select the true gems, the ones you you always have fun playing, and thinking about This can be nice if you have decks in many different tools, such as Tappedout, or Archidekt, or the new Scryfall Deck Editor It’s a single place you can access that has all your decks in one place. There’s a social component to the stable as well. I propose that folks can share their Stable with other people, and that it can be a way to let other people (in person and on the internet) get to know them. A business card that you can hand to other folks that says “I’m this kind of Commander player!” I like the idea of doing this because I am constantly updating decks, but don’t have a way to track those changes and if they are improvements or not. Ryan - Historical Data! The chances of getting a deck exactly the way you want it the first time you play it is pretty slim. This lets you track what’s working for you and not working for you. A way to force us to consider upgrading decks Summary - This probably isn’t a new idea, and it’s probably something that some of you out in audience land already do. You’re discovering the BEST format in Magic: the Gathering (We maaaay be biased, but hey) Who is this episode for? We assume that you are at least slightly familiar with Magic. Maybe you played a long time ago, maybe you’re brand new to the game, but you at least know the basic rules. Also, we think veteran players might enjoy listening to this episode, and we certainly hope that anyone out there will send this episode in particular to new players they teach, or anyone who is interested in learning about the greatest Magic format. Main Topic - New to Commander What is Commander? Arguably the MOST popular Magic format of all time! 40 life, multiplayer format, where you have a Legendary creature as your Commander Example: You choose Meren of Clan Nel Toth This means you can play Black Cards, Green Cards, Black AND Green cards, and any number of artifacts you want. You cannot play with White, Blue or Red cards. To further clarify you cannot play with Terminate because it’s got Red in it’s color identity Hybrid mana cards (Ex. Kitchen Finks) are both GREEN and WHITE in terms of color identity. So, Kitchen Finks cannot go in a mono-green deck. Your Commander’s Color Identity determines what cards you’re allowed to play. This means that you can only play ONE of each non-basic land card Commander is a 100 card SINGLETON format SO MANY! Cards all throughout the history of Magic There is a Banned list maintained at: http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php It’s actually a pretty small list, 39 cards at the time of this recording (In ALL the history of Magic) What cards are you allowed to play with? Why is Commander so great? It’s a SOCIAL format! Commander can be a time when you get together with your friends and just have a good time and laugh etc. I’ve made some life-long friends playing Commander The community is Amazing! We constantly see newcomers welcomed with open arms, and folks are always happy to help people become part of this community Ryan likes to play with Other People’s Cards, and built a whole Mono-red deck around it Personal expression! Commander is a format where players can really express themselves through the decks they build and how they play It’s the Battlecruiser format of Magic! Folks can play with the biggest, baddest cards, and there is more game space to have crazy things happen that wouldn’t in a normal game of Magic. Your skill in politics can be just as important as the power level of your deck. This leads to a natural balancing effect, where the power dynamics shift as the game goes on You can play super casual, all the way up to cEDH (Explain here that the format started off as Elder Dragon Highlander, a.k.a EDH, and that cEDH stands for Competitive EDH) It’s important to find a playgroup that fits your style, and power level. There are different levels of power when it comes to Commander How to get started Start with a precon! There’s no better time than now Find out when Commander Night is at your LGS. Decide who your commander is going to be. This can be a favorite legendary character from days past or it could just be a commander who has a mechanic you find interesting. Decide a plan of attack Look for cards that synergize with your commander or just look fun to play with. Use sites like Scryfall to do searches for specific things (ie. Landfall) If you’re coming up short of a full 100 you can do internet research on sites like edhrec and archidekt for deck lists Remember this is your deck, so build it in a way that will be fun for you and those you play with. How to decide what cards to put in Zack’s steps to make your first commander deck Tips for a new player Tips from Discord and Twitter go here Ramp and Card draw are the building blocks of Commander Briefly Define Ramp and Card Draw With 40 starting life total, you can usually afford to spend the first few turns ramping. This will allow you to cast bigger cards, more quickly, and have a bigger impact on the game You are usually playing against 3 other opponents. So, for every card you draw, your opponents are collectively drawing 3. Having more card draw can lessen this difference. There are many reasons to want Ramp and Card Draw. Whole episodes can be devoted to these topics, but this is a good place to start Especially for new players coming from other formats that is a weird and unintuitive thing but it's important to understand this or there will be some social tensions and feel bads How the social contract works. Mana curve matters. Build a deck with a game plan and a direction Threat assessment, or more accurately, how to effectively deal with problem permanents/spells without drawing a ton of hate. How to build a solid mana base/ramp package. Settle on a list before buying singles. The stack Priority Play removal! Especially for artifacts and enchantments Board Wipes are important, but so is single target removal It’s OK to take time to READ all the cards! Don’t be intimidated by this, even myself as a veteren player, I have to read a card just about every turn of the game!
