Record numbers of nurses are quitting the NHS in England, according to new data analysis by the Nuffield Trust for the BBC. More than 40,000 have left the health service in the past year. Another report published this week from NHS Providers said the squeeze on pay amid rising inflation is forcing nurses and other staff to stop contributions to their pension, skip meals and take on second jobs. Anita Rani speaks to Molly Case, a clinical specialist nurse, working in the community in South London. We talk about family WhatsApp group chats. They can be a source of great joy or great annoyance. We speak to author Nina Stibbe and Journalist Nell Frizzell who has been looking into this. Regarded as one of the greatest English-language novelists of this century, Dame Hilary Mantel was perhaps less well known for her brilliant writing on chronic illness. Throughout her life the author suffered from a severe form of endometriosis. Emma speaks to writer Sarah Perry, author of the Essex Serpent, who has had her own experience of chronic illness and Eleanor Thom, author of Private Parts, how to really live with endometriosis. Giorgia Meloni's election as the Prime Minister of Italy is just the latest victory for a woman on the right of the political spectrum. The vast majority of European women who have had true executive power come from the right, starting with Margaret Thatcher. Emma speaks to Professor Matthew Goodwin and the academic Costanza Hermanin to discuss why the Left have had fewer female leaders. 'Ladies shall we have some fun?' We speak to sex and relationship expert Oloni, who built an online community by speaking openly about sex and relationships. We discuss her new book 'The Big O'. Emedichiosis? Endoleechriosis? Endometulotus? ENDOMETRIOSIS was discovered over 160 years ago and ONE. IN. TEN. (Potentially more) people suffer with it worldwide! So, why, why, why, why, WHY don't we know everything there is to know about it?! Our lovely Sach was diagnosed with Endometriosis in 2016, she has since used her platform to raise awareness (a boss) and more recently became a proud ambassador for Endometriosis UK! This week comedian, writer, artist and Sacha's hero Eleanor Thom will be joining us to tell us what brought her to write her fearless / funny / BRILLIANT memoir Private Parts, a book about Eleanor's experiences of living (... sleeping, walking, talking, eating, sitting, standing, working...) with Endometriosis.  While covering the wider systemic issues that lead to a lack of gynae health awareness, Eleanor and Sach tell and compare their Endo stories (in a nutshell... we'd need at least 8 years to tell you everything... coincidentally the same amount of time it generally takes to get a diagnosis!!!), which symptoms to look out for, and a few tips / what to do if you experience any of them. Thank you so so deeply for listening to this episode. We really hope you learn a thing or two about this chronic and often debilitating condition that is almost definitely effecting someone you know. ONE. IN. TEN. Please come and find us over @thevaginamonoblogs on Instagram. You are also fully encouraged to read/listen to Eleanor's wonderful book Private Parts, I mean, it's been endorsed by Phoebe Waller- Bridge... need you know more?

This show is a little different from usual as we’re coming to you from the Cheltenham Literature Festival, where we were this year’s podcast in residence. This jam-packed special features recordings from both the events we chaired: ‘A Body of Work’ with Karen Havelin and Eleanor Thom, in which we discussed their books Please Read This Leaflet Carefully and Private Parts, including how to write about chronic/persistent pain, and endometriosis; and ‘Me Too in Fiction’, where we spoke to Rosie Price and Ayelet Gundar-Goshen about their books What Red Was and Liar, which deal with sexual assault and its aftermath in very different ways. Plus: voxpops from Max Porter, Candice Carty-Williams, Wana Udobang and Sinéad Gleeson, who all told us what they’d read and loved recently; and our utter glee at discovering the back seat of a car makes an excellent makeshift recording studio, steamed up windows and all. It’s full of the good stuff to warm you up as the nights draw in.

How to live happily and well with endometriosis, from someone who has tried everything and lived to tell (and laugh at) the tale. What the internet can tell you about endometriosis: Endometriosis is a chronic and incurable condition that affects 1 in 10 women with approximately 1.6 million sufferers in the UK alone, but only 20% of the general public have heard of it. It takes an average of seven and a half years to get a diagnosis in the UK and affects sufferers' capacity to work, their fertility and their ability to enjoy sex. What Eleanor Thom can tell you about endometriosis: You are so much more than the sum of your private parts. Part memoir, part guide book and part survival guide, Private Parts retraces Eleanor's own journey with endometriosis, offering readers practical, down-to-earth and friendly advice covering everything from what actually happens in an internal exam, to finding the right specialist for you, the perfect post-op wardrobe and to why you should look to Frida Kahlo for inspiration in your darkest moments. Written for those looking to live well with their endometriosis and for those who are looking for help to understand the disease and how it affects those with it, Private Parts is a call to action for people to speak up about an illness which is still so misunderstood.
