We're switching things up for this episode of Cinebuds and talking about … the theater!OK, sure, Dori and Kpolly talk about theaters all the time in the context of movies. For this installment, they're talking about live theater being brought to movie theaters to give audiences the chance to experience live theater while sitting in a movie theater.Milwaukee Film has done this in the past and recently resuscitated the practice via National Theatre Live, which for 15+ years has delivered the best of British theatre to movie houses around the world. We're talking instantly recognizable names and faces like Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Sheen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Andrew Scott treading the boards in productions of Hamlet, Frankenstein and Vanya. The brilliant Scott gets the spotlight treatment in this episode of Cinebuds, as our movie-loving duo applies some of that adoration to Scott's astounding performance in Vanya. The stage play sees him take on every character in a way few actors can while utilizing subtle shifts in tone, expression and body language, with a little help from creative propwork. You can hear all about Vanya and Scott's sizable undertaking in the full episode of Cinebuds, and find more information on National Theatre Live at the Oriental via the Milwaukee Film website.Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Co.

Send us a textWhat happens when cultural identity, activism, and groundbreaking storytelling converge? Amber Afzali brings this powerful intersection to life as she joins us to discuss her starring role in "Rule Breakers," the inspiring Angel Studios film that chronicles Afghanistan's first all-girls robotics team.Born to Afghan immigrant parents and raised in America, Amber shares her unique journey of balancing dual identities while developing a deep passion for her cultural heritage. This passion eventually led her to study international relations with a focus on Afghanistan at the University of Pennsylvania, laying the groundwork for both her activism and, unexpectedly, her acting career. When the opportunity to audition for "Rule Breakers" emerged, it represented the perfect union of her academic interests and creative aspirations—a chance to tell an Afghan story that defies stereotypes. The film itself marks a significant departure from typical portrayals of Afghanistan in Western media. Rather than centering on conflict and war, "Rule Breakers" celebrates the determination, brilliance, and resilience of young Afghan women breaking barriers in STEM fields. Amber portrays Esen, a shy hardware engineer whose character arc mirrors the actress's own childhood journey of finding her voice. Working alongside established actors like Phoebe Waller-Bridge and forming genuine bonds with her castmates created what Amber describes as a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a debut feature film role.Through our conversation, Amber reveals how the on-screen chemistry among the actresses playing the robotics team naturally evolved from their shared backgrounds and mutual support—mirroring the very dynamics portrayed in the film. This authentic connection has resonated deeply with audiences worldwide as "Rule Breakers" continues to inspire viewers through its theatrical run and on the Angel Guild streaming platform.Ready to be moved by a story of breaking barriers against all odds? Follow Amber's journey on Instagram @AmberAfzali, check out "Rule Breakers" on Angel Guild, and join us in celebrating the powerful intersection of art, activism, and authentic representation.Want to be a guest on Living the Dream with Curveball? That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick looks back at Season 45 of Saturday Night Live, a season that started off strong with Woody Harrelson hosting and Billie Eilish as the musical guest. Everything felt business as usual—until it wasn't. No one could have predicted that the season would end early, transformed into a series of prerecorded, at-home episodes due to the onset of a global pandemic. Nick analyzes the season episode by episode, revisiting standout sketches and memorable moments. Along the way, he reflects on how COVID-19 not only changed the world but also forced SNL to rethink how comedy could be created and delivered under lockdown conditions. Highlights include appearances by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Will Ferrell, Daniel Craig, Brad Pitt, Kristen Wiig, and Eddie Murphy, whose long-awaited and Emmy-winning return as host was a major high point—just before the world came to a halt. [Ep 117]

Disabled women in the UK face significant barriers in maternity care, with new research highlighting higher risks of stillbirth, lack of support, and negative attitudes of staff. Labour MP Marie Tidball is camplaigning for change. She joins Kylie Pentelow to describe her own experience, along with Professor Hannah Kuper, one of the researchers behind the report, who details her findings. The Advertising Standards Authority has recently banned a number of ads in mobile games which objectify women, use pornographic tropes, and feature non-consensual sexual scenarios. It's not what you expect to see popping up when playing your favourite mobile game. Kylie hears more from Jessica Tye, Regulatory Projects Manager at the ASA, who led the investigation.Nursery costs have fallen for the first time in 15 years - according to the children's charity Coram. This comes as the Government is continuing to roll out its funded childcare scheme, which will provide all eligible working parents of pre-school children with 30 hours of childcare per week from September 2025. But while some parents have seen a reduction in fees, many with children or grandchildren will be aware of the challenging costs of childcare. Are costs really falling? Can you get a nursery place? Kylie discusses the picture with BBC Education Correspondent Vanessa Clarke, Neil Leitch, Chief Executive of the Early Years Alliance, and nursery owner, Claire Kenyon.Julia Grogan's debut play Playfight was the breakout hit of last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It earned five-star reviews, sell-out audiences – and even praise from Phoebe Waller Bridge, who called it ‘a blinding sucker-punch of a play'. I've hand-picked some of my favourite episodes of all time to revisit this Christmas, so today's a very special one. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was my first EVER guest on this podcast when I launched in July 2018. A year after that, almost to the day, I welcomed her back to talk about how her life had changed in the interim [spoiler alert: she'd become a global superstar]. Phoebe talks about the craziness of those 12 months, during which she wrote and starred in Fleabag 2 (described as a televisual masterpiece by...well...almost everyone), made Killing Eve (described as a televisual masterpiece by...well...almost everyone) and worked her magic on the new James Bond movie. It was a year that, from the outside, seemed to many of us to be the epitome of success. But what failures lay underneath the surface? What about those private moments of vulnerability and self-doubt we are so rarely privy to? Phoebe joined me to talk about three failures from that year, including her failure to connect with her family, her failure to speak up for herself and her failure to Marie Kondo her bedroom. Along the way, we discuss what makes the perfect water bottle, filming THAT final scene in Fleabag (apparently the foxes were total divas), sexuality, exhaustion and why female creators are often unfairly assumed to be writing autobiography. And yes, the Meryl Streep apple crumble anecdote makes an(other) appearance. HOW TO FAIL PRESENTED BY HAYU LIVE TOUR tickets: www.fane.co.uk/how-to-fail Have something to share of your own? Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. New details surrounding Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps have emerged with the release of this official synopsis: Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's First Family — Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic , Sue Storm/Invisible Woman , Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus' plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren't bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal. While this synopsis may be sparse on specificity, it does officially confirm Julia Garner's role to be that of a Silver Surfer, which was strongly suspected until now. In the wake of some big announcements and updates regarding the franchise's future on the big screen, Star Wars has removed at least one of its upcoming film projects from the calendar. Last week, Disney pulled the untitled Star Wars flick occupying a December 18, 2026 release and replaced it with the recently announced Ice Age 6. Elsewhere on the small screen, fans can look forward to more information on Andor Season 2 soon, with the series on display in the coveted cover feature of Empire Magazine's November issue, available November 21. Our pal Jimmy Gunn is back to his antics providing some seeming clarity on Peacemaker's canon status within his DCU. While speaking with IGN, the filmmaker explained that nothing is canon ‘unless you see it in Creature Commandos,' or is released after that series, which debuts on Max December 5. Gunn went on to clarify that the new canon would include prior events and characters that are referenced in Creature Commandos, which would include all of Peacemaker's first season, barring one scene. “The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker,” The Assembled behind the scenes web documentary for Agatha All Along was suspiciously released via Youtube rather than Disney Plus… While speaking at Vulture Festival, Elizabeth Olsen shared that returning to Marvel feels like a choice driven by character-focused storytelling, not an obligation, and acknowledged superhero films' role in making indie projects possible. Lady Gaga has been cast in season 2 of Wednesday on Netflix. At this time, it is not known what the extent of her role will be. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that Conan O'Brien will host the upcoming 97th Oscar's ceremony. Sophie Turner is in negotiations to star as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, Prime Video's high-profile series adaptation of the video game franchise from Emmy-winning Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Sony has hired Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk to write an updated version of the 1999 horror comedy Idle Hands that starred Seth Green and Jessica Alba. Jason Reitman is serving as a producer and a director has not yet been announced. A rebooted Friday Night Lights series is in the works at Universal TV. The reboot is believed to be a new story with new characters not attached to the original. HBO's Lanterns has added Never Have I Ever star Poorna Jagannathan to the cast. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans' Christmas movie Red One came in at the lower end of expectations with a $32.1 million domestic outing. Apple TV+ has ordered a 10-episode series adaptation of Cape Fear with Javier Bardem starring as Max Cady, a notorious killer seeking revenge on a couple of attorneys. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese will executive produce the series.
Inside this episode Josh and Jade review the film, My Old Ass, streaming now on Amazon Prime. Last week, mere minutes after our Tuesday evening recording session, we were both delighted and disheartened when Marvel Studios dropped its “Look Ahead | Disney Plus'' trailer, which not only provided release dates, but showcased our first official look at footage, for a whopping 8 streaming projects. Here's what we learned: Box office juggernaut Deadpool & Wolverine will be available to stream on the platform beginning November 12, 2024. We already knew Daredevil: Born Again is set to begin streaming March 4, 2025, but the trailer, which was intercut with footage from the other shows, gave us our first look at the villain Muse, the return of Jon Bernthal's Punisher, as well as Bullseye, and perhaps most surprisingly the inclusion of Ms. Marvel's dad, Yusuf Khan What If Season 3 will begin streaming this December 22nd, with no word as to whether that will be a weekly or daily release, like last year. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will begin airing January 29th, 2025 Riri William's Ironheart makes her return beginning June 24th, 2025 Eyes of Wakanda, the animated anthology series is set for an August 6th, 2025 debut Marvel Zombies will premiere sometime in October 2025, with the live action Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul Mateen II arriving later that December. In a final marketing push ahead of its December 3 premiere, Lucasfilm released final art, a poster, and a new trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The series, which is helmed by Spider-Man filmmaker Jon Watts, is an Amblin Entertainment-inspired coming of age tale that follows four youths who embark on a swashbuckling adventure with unexpected revelations. The trailer is in keeping with what we've seen from the series thus far, which is to say it feels tonally divergent from anything we've seen in Star Wars before, including new species, planets, and a synth-pop heavy score. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros is gearing up to bring the world of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones to the silver screen with at least one film in early development. And that's pretty much all we know – there's no creative talent attached yet, meaning no writer or director, much less any word regarding a potential time, setting, or characters that might be involved. Amazon MGM Studios is testing actors for the role of Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's upcoming Tomb Raider series. Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton top Amazon's wish list, according to Deadline. Scary Movie creators Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are reuniting after 18 years to develop a new film in the franchise for Paramount and Miramax. Kelly Macdonald, known for Boardwalk Empire and No Country for Old Men, has joined the cast of DC Studios' Lanterns. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Jack Ryan film, continuing the series storyline with John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce, and Michael Kelly. Andrew Bernstein will direct. Early box office projections show Wicked opening at over $80 million domestically and Gladiator 2 at $65 million, both debuting on November 22. Universal Pictures and LEGO have partnered to develop three live-action LEGO films, directed by Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish. Toho has officially greenlit a new Godzilla movie from the director of last year's Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. Amazon MGM Studios has acquired American Speed, starring Tom Holland and Austin Butler as the scandal-ridden Whittington Brothers, with Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven attached. Ridley Scott revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he's working on a new Alien movie for 20th Century Studios, though it's unclear if it's connected to the Alien: Romulus follow-up or a standalone project. Tom Cruise is in early talks with Paramount for a Days of Thunder sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

John Krasinski is most famously known for playing Jim Halpert on “The Office.” However, he's also a movie director. His last two movies, “A Quiet Place” and “A Quiet Place Part II”, were ones that would give kids nightmares. In his latest movie, “If”, he tries to take them, and their parents, to a happy place instead. “If” is the story of Bea, a 12 year old girl that has gone through a tragedy and is staring a potential one head on. Her Dad is going through surgery for a heart problem. However, she starts seeing mysterious figures, and Ryan Reynolds. It turns out these mysterious figures are the former imaginary friends of different children. They're trying to inspire their former kids to remember them as their imaginary friends. Along the way, Bea decides to help them do that. Many kids have imaginary friends. Maybe you did too. If they were here they might steer you towards “If” or tell you it's the worst movie ever. Which one is it? I give you at least my opinion about “If” in this episode. “If” stars Ryan Reynolds, Cailey Fleming, John Krasinski, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell, Fiona Shaw, Louis Gossett Jr., Alan Kim, Liza Colon-Zayas, Bobby Moynihan, Catharine Daddario and Aubrey Hoffman.Support the Show.Feel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

This week Simon briefly sounds like a robot (but it's not the mics fault, corporate overlords!) and Ste doesn't go to Buckingham Palace but, hold the front page, WE HAVE AN SSG!!! We're joined by Jupiter Hadley who tells us all about new indie game showcase Brilliant Indie Treasures which is aiming to take down Develop whilst also helping us to execute a bank heist. While those two things may fail, if they even get off the ground, Jupiter and team are definitely aiming to showcase over 50 playable, unreleased, indie games in a bank in Brighton so please do check them out. Jupiter also champions playing games for fun and not for punishment so that is certainly no bad thing! There's also Phoebe Waller-Bridge raiding some tombs, WASD report, the UK Government don't care about killing games, Xbox shift more games to PS and Take-Two haven't closed any studios, honest. Did you go to Buckingham Palace? Do you play games for "fun"?! Have you been closed by Take-Two?!? Tell us all about everything at team@onelifeleft.com and we're hoping for AT LEAST 10 letters when we come back in over a week's time, after bank holiday, so no pressure. In this episode of The Writing Coach podcast, writing coach Kevin T. Johns discusses 10 writing tips from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of the acclaimed TV show Fleabag.
This week, Simon's fave John Krasinski, along with Ms Fleabag herself, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, are on the show to discuss their new film ‘If', which sees a 12-year-old girl who can see everyone's imaginary friends, embark on a magical journey to reconnect the forgotten so-called IFs with the now-adult kids who dreamt them up. Mark will be reviewing the film next week. The good doctor Kermode gives his diagnosis on various new releases, including ‘Made in England', a documentary in which legendary auteur Martin Scorsese reflects on the legacy and lasting influence of the equally legendary British filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger; and ‘La Chimera', Alice Rohrwacher's latest about a British archaeologist who becomes embroiled in an international network of stolen Etruscan artifacts in the 1980s – its star Josh O'Connor was on the show to talk about last week. If you haven't already his chat with Simon is an absolute must-listen! The big review of the week is ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes', the fourth instalment of the ‘Planet of the Apes' reboot franchise, which sees a young ape, many years after the reign of Caesar, embark on a journey that will lead him to question everything's he's been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. From 2005's scandalous origins (hello Brangelina) to Phoebe Waller-Bridge's departure from the Amazon series, the trio explores it all, even the cringe-worthy music of the 1996 TV series lost to history. Plus, don't miss their take on Glover's spy-worthy abs and Maya Erskine's tour de force performance. Tune in for laughs, insights, and a dash of Hollywood intrigue. Listen now! Charles and Jo give their thoughts on Donald Glover's new spy comedy/drama on Prime Video, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith,' a reformulation of the iconic 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. They talk about Phoebe Waller-Bridge's previous involvement in the show, Glover's identity as an artist, and what they thought worked and didn't work about the series. Mr. And Mrs. Smith is back, in TV form, on Amazon Prime, and Sarah Baker is back, in fine form, to talk about it: whether it improves on the movie, how we feel about leads Donald Glover and Maya Erskine's chemistry, how many Brooklyn landmarks Sarah D. Bunting zoomed in on for confirmation, and what the Phoebe Waller-Bridge iteration of the show might have looked like. Then we went Around The Dial with Clone High, The Floor, Fargo, and Law & Order: SVU; and Buntsy stayed in the Order-verse to declare that she's NOT a crackpot for thinking Tony Goldwyn should play his Criminal Intent character on Mothership even though that character is dead. Alan Partridge won, Alyssa Milano lost, and we all tried to guess the horndog hearts of IMDb searchers in Game Time. This time it's cake AND death in an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS
The British actress/writer/director, who for 'Promising Young Woman' won the best original screenplay Oscar and became the first British female ever nominated for the best director Oscar, reflects on the roots of her interest in dark material, being handed the reins to 'Killing Eve' by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and what inspired her sophomore feature, which was just nominated for the best picture Critics Choice Award. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the fifth and apparently final film starring Harrison Ford as everyone's favorite globe-trotting, whip-cracking, Nazi-punching archeologist. The movie finds Indy on the cusp of retirement, when he's forced to chase an ancient artifact around the world to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. Directed by James Mangold, and also starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen, it's in theaters now.
