Frankrijks rol in Europa moest dynamischer. Sociaaleconomisch moest Frankrijk moderner en flexibeler. En een herleving van een ruimdenkend politiek midden. Op dat eerste punt heeft hij onmiskenbaar verdiensten. Niet in het minst daartoe uitgedaagd door Poetin en Trump. Op het tweede punt slaagde hij niet. Confrontatie met de gele hesjes ontweek hij. Macron verzwakte zijn positie daarmee zozeer, dat hij in zijn tweede termijn een technocratisch beleid ging voeren dat weinig steun verwierf. Op het derde punt ging hij door een diep dal. Het veelbelovende En Marche verwerd tot 'Macronie' – synoniem voor arrogantie. Hij hernam zich knap, maar kon er politiek niet meer van profiteren. Hij eindigt als Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in 1981, eenzaam en zonder aanhang. Het politieke veld na Macron ligt nu volstrekt open. Niets is vooralsnog zeker. Marine le Pen was voorbijgestreefd door haar kroonprins Jordan Bardella. Die was al met een echte prinses aan zijn zijde als royalty-paar op weg naar het Élysée. Hij bewoog bovendien weg van Le Pens Orban en Wilders koers. Werd hij zo de Giorgia Meloni van Parijs? Een juridisch geitenpaadje bood Le Pen alsnog een laatste uitweg naar de macht. Daarmee worden de campagne-inhoud en de machtsverhoudingen tussen de twee onhelder. Niet Marine le Pen maar Bardella draagt nu – figuurlijk - een enkelband. Want hij kan geen kant op en ziet zijn triomf wegglijden. De kroonprins kon weleens zelf het grootste belang hebben bij een nederlaag van Le Pen. Tegenover dit radicaal-rechtse duo staat een hopeloos verdeeld links. Van een krachtig, coherent geheel als onder François Mitterrand is geen sprake. De Groenen zijn woest op de sociaaldemocraten. Die zien spoken uit het verleden opduiken, terwijl een eigentijds pakkend gezicht nergens zichtbaar lijkt. Op radicaal-links helpt Jean-Luc Mélenchon vooral Le Pen met een vergelijkbaar anti-EU betoog. Het burgerlijke midden is versplinterd nu Macron geen eigen politieke familie nalaat. Kandidaten zetten meer hun naamsbekendheid in dan een helder program. Meer poppetjes dan ideeën dus. Kandidaat en oud-premier Edouard Philippe lijkt vooral op Georges Pompidou. Gedegen, onspectaculair. Rivaal Gabriel Attal is de Franse Rob Jetten. Slagen zij - met de conservatieven van Les Républicains er nog bij? - tot één kandidaat en program te komen of leggen hun ego's de loper uit voor een triomferende Le Pen? Of is de leus van meerdere partijen - 'Renaissance!' - onbedoeld een voorspelling? In die glansrijke jaren van de Franse cultuur was de politiek niet minder onvoorspelbaar en waren de ego's niet minder dominant. I don't blame them for being frustrated. Their citizens hate the guy, and they still have to deal with him.Trump is never going to be a weepy internationalist reminiscing about the transatlantic bond forged in blood and mud from World War II through the Cold War. He looks at every relationship as a business deal: What are you doing for me, and what am I doing for you in return? He doesn't mind doing something for Europe if Europe does something for America, and he views this as one of our more one-sided relationships.European governments are now removing American technology from their systems, adopting European open-source software, and investing hundreds of billions of dollars in their own space firms, artificial intelligence companies, and data centers. Good luck. If Europe were capable of developing that economy under its current system, it wouldn't be in this situation. The talent exists, but investment is too hard, regulation is too burdensome, and companies must navigate a collection of fiefdoms with their own tax bases and regulatory structures.
