Tread Perilously's annual Doctor Who month celebrates 20 years of the new series, starting with the Jodie Whittaker era episode "Eve of the Daleks." New Year's Eve 2021. Sarah, the owner of Elf Storage in Manchester, must keep the lights on because a certain client always turns up just before midnight on 31 December to deposit items in his storage space. He turns up, naturally enough, but so do The Doctor, Yaz, and Dan. And, soon, Daleks arrive, too. When they exterminate everyone in the building, a time loop occurs ... but all quickly becomes aware of it. Can they figure out the secret behind the loop and stop the Dalek? Erik gets into the weeds about the use of the term "reboot" in media. He also makes the case against Dan. Justin comes to his own appraisal about the character. While some gripes about then-showrunner Chris Chibnall get aired, the pair praise him for various choices in this episode. Guest stars Aisling Bea and Adjani Salmon also prove to be MVPs. Guesses are made about cuisine in Middle-earth. Despite a number of tropes, the story ends up feeling fresh. The problem with The Doctor/Yaz relationship is discussed and Dalek voices abound.

It's a celebration of cinema, of culture, and of the Hanks family this week on the Movie Squad pod. Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo reunite to give Breakfast host Pamela Boland a double-dose of Hanks, with two new cinema releases starring the famous father, Tom, and his son (no, not Chet). First up, Tristan reviews Here, which sees Tom Hanks reunite with his Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis and co-star Robin Wright for an unusual adaptation of a graphic novel that spans centuries while focusing squarely on one single camera angle of a lounge room. Then, Simon previews the British Film Festival, specifically looking at the new Aisling Bea romcom And Mrs, in which she plays a recently widowed fiancee who pushes forward with a wedding to the deceased (played by Colin Hanks). Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive chat with Madeline Bates, the new/returning Film Curator at Perth Festival, all about the most exciting titles set to premiere at the Somerville Auditorium over the next few months. You can take a look at the full program here, ahead of the first film's debut on 25 November: Didi.

“A hung Parliament” - it's not quite admitting defeat, but the new media lines from Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party suggest that even the Government knows its days are numbered. Nish and Coco unpack Sunak's shock admission and some of the highlights from the local elections. Comedian, actor and activist (and old colleague of Nish) Aisling Bea drops in to talk about campaigning against food insecurity. The “Essentials Guarantee” campaign championed by the Trussell Trust asks that political parties prioritise all citizens having basic essentials as part of their election manifestos.Aisling also talks about the fight for abortion rights in her homeland of Ireland, while Coco reminds us that the abortion laws in England, Scotland and Wales are incredibly archaic. Abortion buffer zones, 150m no-protest areas around clinics have just hit their one-year anniversary of receiving royal ascent for England & Wales, however, the Home Office has yet to roll out the change to the law - leaving protestors free to approach women outside. Finally, the gang mix together a metaphorical soufflé of villains, stirring in a healthy dose of uncapped banker bonuses, adding a dash of Susan Hall, and a pinch of the Labour Party's surprise new MP. In part 1 of Comedians on UFOs, we are joined by Rhys Darby, Kumail Nanjiani, Aisling Bea, Dave Foley, Steve Berg, and Moshe Kasher!UFO accounts can sometimes reminds us of a playful world. A humorous world. A species looking for structure and pattern and constantly being bombarded with both chaos and ridiculousness. And that if most definitely UFOs. And it's also comedy. Comedy gives us a communal experience full of confusion and raw emotional release. It makes us feel more human than ever. So when we're faced with something possibly non-human, we can choose to run away from it or fight it. Or, we can embrace it and sometimes, laugh about it. In this series, Ryan digs into the archives of Somewhere in the Skies to bring you a collection of interviews he's conducted throughout the years with comedians. And, as you'll see, a common thread starts to weave its way through these conversations. Why are comedians drawn to UFOs? How can we use it to both accept and possibly even understand UFO phenomenon. James Cameron-Wilson takes Simon Rose though the latest box office figures, hit by the hot weather. The new #1 is The Flash with Ezra Miller, which James enjoyed enormously. Take That jukebox musical Greatest Days with Aisling Bea is #6 while the NTLive one-day presentation of Pheobe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag was #11. James found it tragic, unpredictable & very funny and it will be on again. Indy first film Inland was #30 but, despite Mark Rylance, it left James cold. Learn more about your ad choices. Hannah Chambers has spent 25 years in the comedy management business looking after many famous comedians including Jimmy Carr, Sarah Millican, Joe Lycett and Aisling Bea. As she explains, she has given up her Monday to Friday fully for her job, and in fact it's not unusual for her to work 14 hour days, often spending evenings watching stand up shows or TV recordings that her clients are appearing in. She loves her job and says she's a bit like a Jewish mother to her clients: pushy, but wanting them to eat properly too! We met at The Garden Cinema near Holborn - which houses her offices but is also a newly-opened cinema, designed and built just before lockdown by her Dad. We recorded our chat in Screen 1, with plush red velvet seats in front of us and a lovely heavy cinema curtain behind us.Hannah has been on my radar for a long time as my best friend Maria worked with her husband Jeremy, and I have always admired their decision for Hannah to carry on her more-than-full-time job when she became a mum, while Jeremy took on the role of primary carer.Hannah is always quick to tell people about this and is refreshingly unapologetic about it - as she is about everything!I loved Hannah's sense of humour and her resilience - two things she wants to pass on to her daughters. She told me about a photo she keeps on her phone, of her doing a deal for Jimmy Carr, from her hospital bed, 30 minutes after her first daughter Rosie was born. That probably sums her up: incredibly hard-working but with a great self-deprecating sense of humour. Her daughters recently made her laugh, predicting her tombstone would read ‘Jimmy, I'll call you back!'Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. (Recorded May 2021) The last time Mike and Aisling Bea spoke, Aisling was frantically making pizza from scratch for one of Mike's Worldwide Comedy Pizza Party virtual shows. Now that the dough has settled, they dig in for a conversation about introverts vs. an extroverts, why it's tough to follow an Irish comedian in Ireland, and Mike's wife's misunderstanding about the berries of the town of Dingle.
