A truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is extended by two days, Qatar announced today. The pause in fighting gives some relief to a besieged Gaza, and more time to work out deals to swap Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. Over the weekend, four-year-old American Israeli Abigail Edan was released, but not into the arms of her parents. They were killed in front of her on October 7th when Hamas stormed their kibbutz. Also released was 9-year-old Emily Hand, an extremely emotional moment for her father who initially believed she was dead. Eyal Nouri's aunt Adina Moshe was released on Friday, and he joined the program.  Also on today's show: Israeli psychologist Ayelet Gundar-Goshen; author Nathan Thrall; opinion writer Roxane Gay; Booker Prize-winning author Paul Lynch  Learn more about your ad choices. How well do we really know those who are closest to us? That's the question that is behind ‘The Wolf Hunt', a new novel by Israeli author Ayelet Gundar-Goshen. She's my guest on this very special episode. In a first for the show, I'm interviewing the author of a piece of fiction. Ayelet isn't just a writer. She's also a clinical psychologist, which informs both her content and the way in which she writes her narratives. The Wolf Hunt is the story of a mother who begins to suspect her teenage son of committing a terrible crime. Lilach, the main protagonist, seems to have it all: a beautiful home in the heart of Silicon Valley, a community of other Israeli immigrants, a happy marriage and a close relationship with her teenage son, Adam. But when a local synagogue is brutally attacked, her shy, reclusive son is compelled to join a self-defence class taught by a former Israeli Special Forces officer. Then, a Black teenager dies at a house party, and rumours begin to circulate that Adam and his new friends might have been involved. As scrutiny begins to invade Lilach's peaceful home and her family's stability is threatened, will her own fears be the greatest danger of all? It's a fascinating and engaging storyline. And, as you'll hear, it was inspired by a simple question Ayelet asked herself when she was dropping her daughter off at school. In our discussion, we explore: Ayelet's journey as a writer and what inspires her to write;the psychological themes that underpin her work and how her personal experiences, both as a psychologist but also as a mother and individual, shape her narratives; The particular experiences and stories she's been told that led to The Wolf Hunt; How literature serves as a universal mirror reflecting our experiences and biasesAnd so much more. For more on The Wolf Hunt, visit https://pushkinpress.com/books/the-wolf-hunt/.It's available in all major bookstores. To read articles she's written for Time magazine: https://time.com/author/ayelet-gundar-goshen-2/Since this is the first fiction writer I've had on the show, let me know what you think about the idea of doing more of this type of interview. If you like it, should it be part of the main show or a separate one? If you don't, why not!

Driving too fast through Israel's Negev desert in his SUV after a long day in the hospital, Dr Eitan Green accidentally hits a lone Eritrean man on the empty moonlit road, killing him instantly. Panic stricken he drives off instead of calling for help and confessing what he's done. A decision that will change the course of his life irrevocably because the dead man's wife, the elegant, enigmatic Sikrit, knows what happened. In atonement for his crime Sikrit insists the doctor start treating Eritrean refugees after his hospital dayshifts at clandestine makeshift hospitals in the desert. A nail-biting and morally devastating drama of guilt, racism, shame and desire which stares unflinchingly at the darkness inside us all, and asks the reader: what would you have done?

Last week we featured Ayelet Gundar-Goshen’s latest book, Waking Lions. This week, host Marcela Sulak reads from Gundar-Goshen’s first novel, the Sapir Prize-winning One Night, Markovitch. The novel opens on the eve of World War II, with a group of young men setting out from Mandate Palestine to participate in fictitious marriages with Jewish girls who wish to escape Europe and reach the Jewish homeland, then under British rule. "He felt Sonya’s entrance into the room before he saw her, because over the last six weeks he had learned to pick out the smell of oranges even on a busy street. Therefore he had several seconds to compose himself before turning around and facing her in her ordinary blue dress, part of a sweet routine that was not his." Gundar-Goshen was born in Israel in 1982, and she has already achieved great success in writing for television and film. Text: One Night, Markovitch, by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen.
