This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I reconnected with writer/director Elena Weinberg. I also got the opportunity to sit down and chat with Elena's husband and creative partner, writer/actor, Duncan Coe! Elena Weinberg is an actress, writer, director, producer, and production manager. She has made quite a few independent films alongside Duncan Coe with their production company, TurtleDove Films. Elena is known for her work creating the webseries, #ATown and directing the movie, A Room Full of Nothing. A few films she has recently produced, Dancers(2021), Between the Trees (2021), and A Grievance with Gravity (2020), are currently doing the rounds at film festivals all over the country. Duncan Coe is an actor and director, known for The Long Road Home (2017), I'll Come Running (2008) and A Room Full of Nothing (2019). Duncan is the co-owner of TurtleDove Films and a freelance screenwriter and film editor. Duncan is the writer and lead actor in the feature film, A Room Full of Nothing. You can also see him in the music video for Dearly Departed by Shakey Graves. I am a big fan of Elena and Duncan and the beginning of this interview is a bit of fangirling for me. Elena and Duncan as TurtleDove Films made #ATown, a two-season webseries about feminism, friendship and fucking up in Austin, TX. It won Best Webseries in the Austin Chronicle in 2015. During our chat, I reminisced about how that show opened my mind to what a web series could really be. The last time I chatted with Elena was at #AFF26 to promote the movie she directed called “A Room Full of Nothing.” It was nice during this interview to talk to Duncan about it too since he wrote and co-starred in it. In this conversation, we talk about writing and what it means to be a writer. We talk about imposter syndrome and feeling like you're not really a writer even though you do, in fact, write. Elena talks about how she wrote her current feature, Sunset Lanes. Duncan discusses his folder packed with script ideas. Elena and Duncan compare and contrast their writing styles. We chat about the importance of financial stability for artists and how having a day job can really take a lot of stress out of making independent films. We talk about developing confidence, about learning to edit movies, and about the effect the pandemic had on their filmmaking. I had a really great time talking to these two artists, least of all because I admire them both so much. And my big takeaway is that if filmmakers that are prolific and amazingly talented can have doubts about their art, it's okay for the rest of us to have them too. And that, to me, is incredibly comforting. We're all in this together. Support Elena Weinberg and Duncan Coe and TurtleDove Films by checking out their upcoming films being featured at film festivals! You can also support Duncan and Elena by watching A Room Full of Nothing and #ATown. They also make content for Goodr so support that company as well! And if you ever see their names attached to a project, go for it. These two are the real deal and someday I'm going to pretend that we're better friends than we are to look cool at a party. This week on Yes But Why, we talk to actress and podcaster, Ivy Meehan. Native Texan Ivy Meehan has always found her way to performing on a stage, even when there were no theaters anywhere to be found. Even when she was going to college on a golf scholarship and getting a degree in Entertainment and Sport Promotion, she somehow convinced the business school she was attending to produce a musical every spring. And yet, most of the stories Ivy tells me in our conversation have to do with fear. Ivy, like all of us, was afraid to do something that wasn't so stable. But still she found her way to the theater. She got internships at theaters doing marketing and PR. She became a wedding DJ. But what she really wanted to do was act. Maybe in films, maybe onstage but definitely in front of people. Ivy and I talk about how hard it can be to get out of your own way. Ivy and I talk about wanting to be performers but how fear can really hold you back. Ivy tells me about every job she had that was theater adjacent before she finally bit the bullet and became an actor. When she moved to Austin, Ivy connected with TurtleDove Films and worked with Elena Weinberg and Duncan Coe on the #ATown web series and then on the feature film, A Room Full of Nothing. Turns out, Ivy's pretty good at acting. She even very recently won “Best Performance” at the 2020 Fort Myers Beach International Film Festival for her role in A Room Full of Nothing. Support Ivy Meehan now by watching her in A Room Full of Nothing, available now on Amazon. You should also check out “Local,” her podcast that features deep conversations with small, local business owners about their origins, journeys, struggles, and triumphs. It seems like a lot of my episodes of this Low-Budget Rebels podcast start out the same. I ask the guest how they started, they say they picked up a camera when they were 7, and the rest is history. But not this week. Elena Weinberg didn't get into actually directing until later, starting as an actress in Austin, Texas (a place we both have very fond and interesting relationships with) and slipping into directing out of necessity with her husband - Elena tells an inspiring story of how she made her way from a series of shorts to her first feature film A Room Full of Nothing. We discuss everything from transitioning from shorts to features, the benefits and challenges of working with a partner, the ups and downs of filming in different cities, and our favorite event in the world.... but you'll have to listen to find out what it is! You can follow Elena on social media at:Twitter: @ElenaWeinbergInstagram: @ElenaIsRadelenaweinberg.comCheers everyone! Make sure to leave me a voice message at speakpipe.com/lowbudgetrebels

This week on Yes But Why Podcast, we talk to eleven different filmmakers about their craft, their journey and their process. Listen in as they share stories from their experiences! And, since Austin Film Festival is still going on, you can check out all of these movies! Austin Film Festival was an amazing adventure for me. Yes But Why was invited to join the press corps and I spent the better part of Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th doing interviews in and around the Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin. I am excited to share them with you now! MARK WILSON & CHRIS RETTS (start 00:00:57) My first interview is with Mark Wilson and Chris Retts, the director and writer, respectively, of the film, Wade in the Water! They told me about how they have been working as a filmmaking team for 6 years and how they channel their creative flow to make movies together. Check out Wade in the Water tonight, Monday October 28th at 6:15pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Village. GUILLAUME LEVIL (start 00:18:47) Next up, I spoke with French screenwriter, Guillaume Levil. At the festival, Guillaume is presenting his uplifting short film, Running Naked in the Universe. In our chat, we talk about collaborative story development and the importance of making connections at festivals. I had the opportunity to moderate the Q&A for his premiere and it went great! Check out the 2nd screening of Running Naked in the Universe on Wednesday October 30th at 7pm at the Galaxy Highland movie theater. KATIE HYDE (start 00:53:22) Our next interview is with Katie Hyde, the director/producer/DP of Indie City Films. Katie is a “Jane of all trades” and in our conversation, we talked about giving opportunities to those who need it and building a great creative community. Katie is at the festival, promoting and presenting her film, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Oh My God I Think It’s Over,” a peek behind-the-scenes of the final rehearsals before the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend series finale! The documentary already played at the festival but keep your eyes peeled for a hopeful future release from the CW! ZOE WARD (start 01:14:00) My next chat was with filmmaker, Zoe Ward. Zoe’s short film, Soft & Pink, was made as her MFA thesis presentation at UCLA. I was excited to talk to Zoe about writing and directing her movie as well as composing both of the film’s musical numbers. I was also fortunate enough to moderate the Q&A for Zoe’s shorts program; Here, we discuss the theme of “good people doing bad things.” Your chance to see Soft & Pink is tonight, Monday October 28th at 6pm at the Galaxy Highland movie theater. DREW ROSAS (start 01:40:47) In my next interview, I chatted with filmmaker, Drew Rosas. Drew and his creative partner, Nick Sommer, have created a funny web series called Shangri-LA. PAR PAREKH (start 02:04:31) The next conversation was a total surprise and I couldn’t be happier that I connected with him! Par Parekh is one of the most delightful people I have ever met. Par wrote, directed and acted in his short film, The Happy. He was sweet and funny in the interview and you’re going to love his stories! You can see Par’s short film, The Happy on Tuesday October 29th at 1pm at the Rollins Theater! I had moderated the Q&A for their premiere the night before and so we continued the conversation about the Atlanta comedy scene and about what it takes to put together a full length comedy movie like theirs. Go watch the 2nd screening of The VICE Guide to Bigfoot on Tuesday October 29th at 9:15pm at the Galaxy Highland movie theater! ELENA WEINBERG (start 02:42:25) Next up, I talk to Elena Weinberg of TurtleDove Films. Elena and her husband, Duncan Coe, made the feature film, A Room Full of Nothing. The movie premiered on Saturday night at the Austin Film Festival and I had the opportunity to host their Q & A! Elena and I sat down before the premiere to talk about learning Shakespeare, about creating project challenges for yourself to improve your skills and about finding your tribe. You still have a chance to see A Room Full of Nothing on Wednesday October 30th at 1:45pm at the Hideout Theater! MARISSA TANDON (start 03:03:21) Our final interview is with podcaster, Marissa Tandon. An Austin Film Festival success story, Marissa entered a podcast script competition in 2017 and has since been producing and writing her own audio fiction podcast, Super Ordinary!
