Send us a Text Message. At eleven, Ruthie Craft faced the challenges of a new Tourette's syndrome diagnosis. No one could have predicted that five years later, she'd be onstage, singing a duet with an international superstar. Over the next decade, she would conquer new challenges and heartbreak, becoming a powerhouse singer-songwriter with millions of streams and her own EP. "Tourette's was my reason to sing," Ruthie shares. "When I sang, my tics went away, and I felt normal, if only for a moment."As a teenager, discovering Adele's debut album, *19*, cemented Ruthie's passion for music. She began teaching herself the basics of singing and songwriting. "One morning, I looked at the lyrics I had written on the big whiteboard in my room and thought, ‘this is my purpose.'" Without formal guidance on breaking into the music industry, she started performing at open mics and talent shows, eventually winning a contest to sing with country star Keith Urban. At that time, her onstage outfits were a mix of hand-me-downs and thrifted items, reflecting her resourcefulness as a part-time barista. At 19, Ruthie's whirlwind marriage took her from her home state of Washington to North Carolina, far from her family and friends. As her marriage ended, she found solace in music, exploring new genres like rap and hip hop to rediscover her voice. "The mixture of inspiring lyrics and bold productions made me feel alive," she recalls.Divorced and determined at 23, Ruthie reached all three rounds of Hollywood Week on *American Idol* in 2019. "The insecurity I felt from watching a hundred talented singers perform their original songs pushed me to learn how to write my own. I witnessed the difference between singers, performers, and what it means to be both: an artist." Since then, she has collaborated with producers and artists across the country, sharing stages with Sir-Mix-A-Lot, Shakey Graves, Magic City Hippies, Die Spitz, and Raelyn Nelson. In 2024, Ruthie received a Sonic Guild grant. She explains, "I want to make music that makes people feel alive, comforted, and helps connect them to their own joy and pain." Each performance is an opportunity to "let my emotional filters down and invite the audience to do the same." Her cinematic pop-soul sound features powerful vocals, moody, soulful tones, and slick lyrics, drawing comparisons to Imagine Dragons, early Maroon 5, Amy Winehouse, and Dua Lipa.Ruthie continues to hone her craft in Austin, TX. Her debut EP, *Sound of Blue*, is set to release in September 2024.https://www.ruthiecraft.com/Support the Show. Thanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/
Ryan Miller is here this week, and we had a fun, sometimes goofy, yet deep and reflective conversation — all the things one might come to expect from the Guster frontman. A veteran of 30+ years at the helm, and with a new Guster album, Ooh La La — arguably their best work to date — Ryan has an exciting outlook for his own creative future and that of the band. A uniquely talented and affable human with a terrific sense of humor, Ryan simply has a generous spirit and caring soul, and that 100% comes through in this super fun interview.Little did I know that Ryan is the ultimate Roadcase guest, full of fun quips — both self-deprecating and directed happily at me — and we totally vibe out on all things, and I'm here for that!! This is simply a great episode that you won't want to miss!!For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
On this episode of Tent Show Radio, Midwest folk group Good Morning Bedlam showcases their exciting sound & soaring three-part harmonies, then, acoustic musician Gareth Pearson, known for his distinctive fingerstyle techniques, captivates with his creative and innovative arrangements. Good Morning Bedlam has become an innovative force in the Midwest folk scene. Their shows are known for their contagious energy, with members careening about the stage. With tight soaring three-part harmonies, and thumping kick-drum, they captivate their audience night after night. Every song is a unique twist on what is generally dubbed as folk music. In 2019, the folk-rock band from Minneapolis, MN claimed the first-place title at the John Hartford Memorial Festival Band Competition and were finalists at the NWSS Band Competition. Their shows are known for their wild energy and stunning harmonies. They have played at festivals alongside artists such as Shakey Graves, Sam Bush, Jason Isbell, The Infamous Stringdusters, Trampled By Turtles and others. In 2021, the band ran a successful Kickstarter in July of 2021 for their much anticipated third full-length record ‘Lulu' where fans from around the world pledged a total of $34,000. Good Morning Bedlam has been featured on Bluegrass Today, Relix Magazine, Glide Magazine, and Paste Magazine. Now in 2023 the band is gearing up to release a brand-new EP titled Dear Day, Dear Darling in the Fall of this year. Referred to as "The Welsh Tornado," Gareth Pearson has emerged as one of the most exciting acoustic musicians of his generation. His distinctive style can be heard through his creative and innovative arrangements which cover a wide spectrum of genres including country/folk/classical/pop/rock/jazz/swing and bluegrass music, along with his own beautiful and often intricate original compositions, which serve in showcasing an enthusiasm and musical intuition well beyond his years. Influenced by guitar greats like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emmanuel and Merle Travis, Gareth Pearson strays from the traditional style of the seated and motionless acoustic performances. An extremely entertaining and inspiring performer, Pearson exhibits immense love for the music he performs while he combines fingerstyle pyrotechnics, with explosive lead runs as his exuberant style denotes a mastery of the instrument very few possess. Basketball Bits Starts at 1:00 We welcome Alex Drain to talk about Indiana football. But before that, filling up the basketball roster (coaches and players). Dusty May's hires are recruiting focused, do they get an Australian?? Guys in the portal are guys the NBA doesn't want, hence why they're in the portal. Mark Pope to Kentucky is interesting but it's probably a good hire overall. Would you rather play in the G league or get paid by Duke or Kentucky? Most of Michigan's coaches look like A- hires. Getting a guy like George Washington III is a good get because they're probably not going to fill all 13 spots, plus he could develop in his second year. They don't have a recruiting class right now. Vlad Goldin feels like he's in the bag, he's on campus this week. Tre Donaldson has multiple crystal ball predictions for Michigan. Connor Essegian would hate Wisconsin which is a good culture fit! 2. Hockey Wrap-Up Starts at 45:31 Michigan loses to Boston College 4-0, who would then go on to lose to Denver 2-0 after the Denver goalie played the game of a lifetime. Don't think Michigan played poorly like the Quinnipiac game last year, Boston College was just at another level. Michigan got into trouble in 4-on-4s, especially after Dylan Duke's bad penalty. Seamus Casey probably wasn't 100%, this was one of his worst games. Who's back next year? The bigger question marks are on defense. Still no rumors on goalie and anyone left in the portal doesn't have a great save percentage. Put up an NIL bat signal. 3. Previewing The Big Ten Part One Starts at 1:20:32 Takes hotter than Ohio State fans after losing to Oregon this year. Indiana football time! They essentially imported the whole JMU program plus a coach from Ohio. They landed four running backs from the portal, all of whom played significant snaps last year. Rutgers got a funny quarterback out of the portal. Minnesota and Rutgers like to trade their players a lot, apparently. Taulia Tagovailoa tried to get another year for no reason and didn't get it. Maryland lost a lot and will have quite the drop off. We try to have Michigan State takes. Their defense has been hideous for years but they do return some of those guys. There are pieces on offense but the offensive line isn't great., they're a year zero. Penn State's spring game had some concerning moments! Their top receiver is transferring and the shaky offensive line loses guys. Ohio State said “we're never losing a football game again” so we'll see if it works. Their QBs didn't look good in the spring game. The defensive line dominated. Wisconsin hit the portal hard. Illinois' good defense is all gone. 4. Previewing The Big Ten Part Two Starts at 2:02:19 Northwestern has gotten one (1) guy out of the portal. They're playing on a practice field by the lake this season and that might just sum up their season. Iowa has Not Brian Ferentz as their offensive coordinator, how's that going to look? Spencer Petras is in the portal! "[Team] is playing in the Rose Bowl!" is already an old joke. Nobody got picked apart by the portal as much as Purdue. Dylan Raiola to Nebraska is exciting but it probably won't start well. There's a path to 8 wins there. Minnesota will be okay. USC is finally making an effort to play defense. Their schedule is brutal, though. It will be interesting to see UCLA without Chip Kelly, also their travel schedule is wild. Oregon is a serious football program. Washington's roster and staff has been gutted. The Austin native talks about how songs rejected for a film score led to his latest record.
Americana singer-songwriter and guitarist Shakey Graves returned to Big Top following the celebratory reissue of his acclaimed debut album of Roll The Bones X. With his breakthrough debut album, Roll The Bones, self-released in 2011, Shakey Graves quickly developed a cult following, and began his extensive touring career, sharing stages with artists like Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Mumford & Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show. Roll The Bones, catapulted the singer/songwriter into national visibility and lead to the artist signing to Dulatone Records for future studio releases which included 2014's And The War Came and 2018's Can't Wake Up. In subsequent years, Shakey Graves has continued to experiment with his approach to the songwriting process and has explored more expansive full-band sounds while venturing into more psychedelic territory through many smaller EP releases including Look Alive, release in 2021. His knack for storytelling and an enigmatic stage presence immediately draws listeners into his strange narrative world. The musician has captivated audiences and critics alike with his gnarly composite of blues and folk, variety of idiosyncratic techniques, drastic register shifts, and his off-kilter lyric sensibility masked with old-timey Western imagery, the Austin native is truly a one-man-band of epic sonic proportions. This episode features recordings from Shakey Grave's 2022 performance at Big Top Chautauqua. Roadcase is kicking off Season 4 and I'm talking to musician, actor, performer and overall great guy, Alejandro Rose-Garcia, aka Shakey Graves for this inaugural episode!! Shakey Graves' new album, Movie of the Week, is an exciting project demonstrating the manifold perspectives of the creative mind. Alejandro talks to me about how this project came about, reflecting his lifelong interest in movies and music and how those two art forms intersect in his world. Written and created as it it were a movie -- with accompanying visuals and other surprises, including a "song shuffler" on the website -- Alejandro explains that "artistic endeavors are a way to force your own will on reality." Indeed, Alejandro loves to control his own environment and I delve into how his self-admittedly controlling nature is the cornerstone of his creative process. Join Shakey Graves out on tour this month and make sure to create your own Movie of the Week by visiting the website. I'm honored to bring such an amazing force of nature, Alejandro Rose-Garcia to Roadcase for this Special Episode!!

I've done Halloween mixes in the past but never one quite like this. I decided to take some of the Latin guitar sounds found in my Guitarissimo mixes, tilt them slight off kilter and give the mix a slightly sinister vibe. It's not too dark, and some of it is kinda of fun, just the way Halloween should be. There are a few artists I was familiar with or have played before like David Lynch, SUSS, The Phonometrician, Shakey Graves, Ry Cooder, and Tommy Guerrero. The rest are all new artists I discovered while looking for tracks that fit this theme. That was a lot of fun discovering all of that new music. Grab some mezcal, turn the lights out and enjoy. Soundtracking a movie was a perfect opportunity to flex new songwriting muscles. As is often the case in life, however, things went nowhere near according to plan. There's not a lot you can do when you and the director don't see eye to eye. But Alejandro Rose-Garcia found opportunity amid frustration. Movie of the Week finds Shakey Graves embarking on his own imaginary film soundtrack, courtesy of AI and endless remixing. It's a perfect outlet for an artist who is every bit as restless as his fans. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It is a privilege to welcome singer-songwriter Lisa De Angelis to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Based in Brisbane, Australia, Lisa is a firecracker, quickly cementing herself as one of country music's most unique, exciting voices today. A Southern Gothic base, hints of Justin Townes Earle, Shakey Graves, and Townes Van Zandt, Sierra Ferrell lashings, and Ennio Morricone dusting make up her signature sound: sweeping, cinematic Americana/Blues-Roots music. Lisa's art and path would always be unconventional – and she only picked up a guitar for the first time in 2017.Since graduating from the Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA) 's prestigious Academy of Country Music and playing her first Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2019, Lisa De Angelis has toured with and opened shows for some of Australia's best performers, including Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon), Steve Kilbey (The Church), Amber Lawrence, Hayley Jensen, Catherine Britt, and Melody Moko. A mentee of Australian country music heavyweights Fanny Lumsden and the Flood's Kevin Bennett, Lisa's debut and sophomore songs have garnered airplay on ABC Country, CMT, and KIX Country Radio. Last month, she released her third single: "My Sister's Blue Suitcase," which Lisa recorded and co-produced with her partner Paul Bain at their Brisbane private studio. The release comes on the heels of a forced six-month hiatus for Lisa after a lengthy illness in 2022 took the hearing in her left ear. The devasting loss barely slowed her roll, though; Lisa was back touring with Amber Lawrence, playing Brisbane's Ekka, and being accepted into AIR's Women in Music Mentorship Program in the second half of 2022. Scrappy, vulnerable, and heartfelt, "part Judy Garland, part Saturday Night Live comedian," Lisa is currently recording and co-producing her debut album, due for release in 2024. In this edition of The Jake's Take's with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lisa De Angelis spoke about the stories behind her songs: "Tumblin' Back," "Hunger Pains," and "My Sister's Blue Suitcase." She also talked about breaking into both the Australian and international music markets.

Who would you go see if you could - in their heyday - what's that band that you REALLY think you should've seen before they weren't... let's talk about it. This week on Tent Show Radio, enjoy an unforgettable episode from the archives, featuring eclectic Americana singer-songwriter Shakey Graves. Playing a smoky, spectral fusion of blues, folk, and rock in a stripped-down one-man-band style, Shakey Graves is the stage name of singer, songwriter, and guitarist Alejandro Rose-Garcia. Originally from Austin, his esoteric bedroom recordings quickly developed a cult following, and he soon began performing live as a one-man band, with a knack for storytelling and an enigmatic stage presence that immediately draws listeners into his strange narrative world.
We look back fondly to our 2014 season with this special re-broadcast featuring two young and extremely talented performers: Alejandro Rose-Garcia, (performing under the moniker Shakey Graves) and Heather Maloney. We'll also share a great eChievement Award story of a young Canadian woman building safe classrooms for children, particularly girls, in Afghanistan.
In January of 2015, I spent the night in a haunted hotel in Oklahoma City and wrote about the experience in The Huffington Post. That would begin a series of articles I called "Sleeping Around" where I explored unusual sleeping situations and what they could teach us about our own sleep. In 2020, I began working with Sleep.com to create content for their new website completely devoted to sleep and topics surrounding it. One day, Sam Bennett, their senior vice president of marketing asked me what my dream sleep project would be. Easy. I want to make a film version of Sleeping Around.A few weeks later we were filming three episodes: a few days on the road with musical artist Shakey Graves, 24 hours with the Fort Worth Fire Department, and a night sleeping on a portaledge with professional Red Bull climber Sasha Digiulian. To mark the milestone of recording our tenth episode, I wanted to record this bonus episode for listeners to take them behind the scenes of this project, and hopefully share why it is so important to me.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Brad Barr over Zoom video! Brad Barr - the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of The Barr Brothers and The Slip - recetly released The Winter Mission, Barr's brand new instrumental solo guitar album through Secret City Records. For more than 20 years, Brad Barr has been counting the number 216. It's a mysterious number that seems to show up everywhere—from clocks and license plates to Ouija boards and receipts—and now it's also sewn the fabric of his new album, like the 216 stitches on a baseball. Inspired by artists like Caetano Veloso, Mississippi Fred McDowell, D'Gary, and John Frusciante, Barr set out to make music that was naked and unprocessed, but also occasionally loud—alive with a sense of wakeful intimacy. The number 216 was a constant theme. The guitarist first encountered the so-called "magic square" during a teenage acid trip; in the years since then it's become a talisman—one of the few areas where Barr feels mystical, sensing a genuine order in the universe. These songs pay tribute to that order—from 216's lofty mathematical and astrological properties to its function as an area-code (for Cleveland). Barr spent decades developing his visceral approach to the guitar, first with The Slip and then across three records with The Barr Brothers. The Winter Mission—the follow-up to The Fall Apartment, Barr's 2008 solo debut—had its origins in a commission from Michael Wolk, Artistic Director at New York City's All For One Theater. It "felt like a gift," Barr recalls—to have a sound he could explore all by himself, away from the road, during COVID's strange intermission. Brad Barr is the lead singer and songwriter of The Barr Brothers, a folk-Americana band that's been around for over a decade. They have toured with The War on Drugs, Calexico, Shakey Graves, and Patrick Watson. Their TV performances include The Late Show with David Letterman and CBS This Morning Saturday. Sarah Slaton is a songwriter that expresses pathos both poignant and relatable (Denver Westword). An Arkansas native, Slaton taught herself to play guitar in the shadow of the Ozarks before making her way out West to Denver. Slaton founded and fronted the Colorado trio, EDISON, recognized for their tireless touring efforts. The band traveled over 150,000 miles between 2014-2018 and with a relentless DIY approach signed with Rhyme & Reason Records. Edison toured with Iron & Win, Jared & The Mill, and opened for Nathaniel Rateliff, Gregory Alan Isakov, Andrew McMahon, and Shakey Graves. The band saw national acclaim with their debut LP, Familiar Spirit, with positive reviews from Consequence of Sound, No Depression, and features on Daytrotter, Jam In The Van, and Relix Sessions. Slaton stepped out with her first solo single with a summer-ready tune, Dance In The Sun. The song channels Fleetwood Mac with its multi-layered vocals and vintage guitar tones. The Colorado artist flew to Los Angeles to work with Lewis Pesacov (Local Natives, Nikki Lane) who produced and engineered the co-write. His neighbor, Garrett Ray (Vampire Weekend), swung by to lay down the drums. The Colorado artist heads into 2020 with collaboration on the mind after assembling a band of friends who join Slaton on stage. Mainstays are Sarah Joelle (of Lola Rising) on the keys, Lief Sjostrom on the cello, Matt Fink on the drums, and Kind Dub, a socially conscious hip-hop duo, joining festival sets featuring their collaboration tracks, "Water In The Well", "Limited Time" and "Elevated Life”. If you're looking for a wholesome average rock concert, don't go see Andy Frasco & The U.N. The first time we met, I sat in with his band at Globe Hall in Denver. I was the opening act and during his set, his keyboard broke. He didn't seem to dwell on it too much. Instead, he kindly asked me if I would set mine up and hop on stage with the U.N. The show didn't stop or anything to set up my keyboard. I just jumped up and started playing. Within a couple of minutes, I had beer dumped on my head, a joint in my mouth, and Andy was off in the far corner of the venue somewhere riling up the audience. I felt a little awkward for the first few minutes, but then I felt like I had been in the band for years. I had an incredible time and didn't want the night to end. I think this is how Frasco shows go for most people. He's somebody who if his career ended right now, he could say he's accomplished more than 99% of all other artists who have tried to "make it." He's played major festivals, sold out mid-sized clubs and theaters all over the country, and bumped shoulders with many other great artists along that way. What started out as playing 250 shows a year and sleeping on couches and vans has turned into a well-oiled machine. Andy has navigated quarantine better than any other artist that I've seen. For the last three plus months, he has hosted weekly dance parties and put out countless funny videos and documentaries that often have nothing at all to do with music. He is managed by Brian Schwartz and Rachel Miller (who was on episode 9 of MCRS) on Denver's 7S Management. He also hosts his own podcast, Andy Frasco's World Saving Podcast, which has played host to the likes of Marcus King, Shakey Graves and Theo Katzman.
