Writer Jennifer Maritza McCauley joins co-hosts V.V. Ganeshananthan and Whitney Terrell to analyze the fallout from Tony Hinchcliffe's “floating island of garbage” comment at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally. McCauley—whose mother is Puerto Rican—discusses the island's history and her communities' reactions. McCauley reads her mother's self-assured response to Hinchcliffe's racism and reflects on the country's distinctive mix of African, Spanish, and Indigenous populations. She also discusses the rights Puerto Ricans have and are denied, given their unusual status as U.S. citizens of a territory rather than a state. She reads from the title story of her collection, When Trying to Return Home, which includes many depictions of Puerto Rican identity. The Breakdown with Shaun King
Ep. 761 - Ron DeSantis is a white supremacist

The fastest path to the Republican nomination for President is white supremacy. In part, that's why Nikki Haley, who is an Indian American, and Tim Scott, an African American, will never win the nomination. Nearly 8 years ago, Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote something that actually shocked me - where he called Donald Trump America's "First White President." Of course, America had 43 white presidents before Trump, but what Coates meant is that Trump was the first President to basically run on whiteness and the advancement of white people at the expense of everyone else. Ron DeSantis is taking that same blueprint and running with it in Florida - first banning the honest teaching of Black history across the state and now defunding and removing all diversity offices at every state college and university - a policy he just announced yesterday. It's not just outrageous, it's dangerous and deeply problematic. These policies are all about positioning himself to be, to paraphrase Coates, "The Next White President" for white people, by white people. Let me unpack and explain it. Welcome to Readers Digress, the podcast where we read nonfiction books so you don’t have to (unless you want to). Join us, hosts Mollie Fox and Kate Kiriakou, as we use a nonfiction book as the springboard to discuss relevant themes and their relation to current events, pop culture, and our personal experiences. Our first two episodes dissect Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation (book description in Part 1, 2:10). Part 1 focuses on performative masculinity and the myth of victimhood in white patriarchal evangelical culture, while Part 2 analyzes how politics and capitalism propelled evangelicalism to its modern, near-omnipresent status in American culture. In Part 2, learn how evangelicalism led us to the current political moment (2:10), hear a case study in the popular culture of evangelicalism (33:55), and the pervasiveness of evangelical culture (46:11). Content Warning: Discussions of disordered eating appear in this episode (33:55 - 45:45).
