Throughout the last few months, we've explored everything from outdoor education in Canada, to a global storytelling initiative, to resilience building in coastal island communities, and more. Today, Joe and Blane explore the story behind “Crystallizing Territorial Visions and Claims: Critical Mapping with Amazonian Kichwa Communities in Climate Change. We are joined by authors Anke and Maritza, and co-investigator, Bequer Tuanama, from San Martin, Peru. The interview is bilingual, Spanish and English, with translations. The episode is full of meaningful reflections, candid anecdotes about the process, and a deeper look at their research project. Enjoy!The team begins by tracing how the partnership with Kichwa communities in San Martin, Peru came into being, and was built from existing relationships [3:13]. This leads into a discussion of critical mapping itself, and how a participatory research tool gradually became something more [5:57], providing a space for collective reflection, negotiation, and the reimagining of territorial claims in the face of state-led conservation efforts. The power dynamics involved and their negotiations are very insightful [10:32]. Afterwards, the team walks us through what the mapping process actually looked like, and the connection between mapping territory and climate action, using stories, timelines, and imagery of non-human beings which were included, beyond geographic boundaries [14:00]. The team then shares some of emergent practises from collaborating with a diverse group of collaborators on the project, including different layers of knowledge on map, as well as a vision for the territory in the future, along with practical challenges of the logistics of budgeting, transportation, bringing in elders and women, and providing an intercultural approach to the work [22:56]. She is a former fellow of the trAndeS program (PUCP/FU Berlin) with a focus on inequalities and sustainable development in the Andean region, interested in political economy and ecology. She is a researcher in the action-research project: “Indigenous Visions for Climate Justice” (PUCP/University Diego Portales/TNC, funded by IDRC) and in the project: “Beyond Certification. From voluntary sustainability standards to sector transformation” (PUCP/University of Melbourne). Since 2003 she has been working in action-research, previously in development cooperation projects in the Andean region, Mozambique and Jordan. She works with producer associations and Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon to make visible their demands for climate, economic and social justice.Maritza Paredes is a Full Professor, and Researcher in the Department of Social Sciences, Sociology Section, at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Her expertise lies in political sociology and environmental sociology. Paredes has extensively studied the impacts of extractive industries on the institutions and environmental justice of local communities and indigenous peoples, as well as the effects of climate policies at the local level, particularly among indigenous communities in the Amazon. She obtained her PhD in International Development from the University of Oxford in the UK and a Master's Degree from Columbia University in the USA.Bequer Tuanama Lumba is a Kichwa leader from the community of Kawana Sisa in San Martin, Peru. He served as apu of his community in 2008 and later contributed to the creation of the Kichwa Huallaga Dorado Federation (FEKIHD), which he chaired from two terms starting in 2016. Certified as a professional technician in 2023, he worked as a territorial researcher in the project: "Indigenous Visions for Climate Justice" and made significant contributions to the co-creation of the "Buen Mapeo" process in San Martin.-- This episode is part of our Eco-justice and Climate Action Series. La ruta canaria de la inmigraicón, que une África con las Islas Canarias, es una de las más letales. El año pasado 1.900 perosnas fallecieron en esta travesía intentando alcanzar suelo europeo. Sin embargo, llegar a tierra es solo un primer paso en busca de una vida nueva. En este gran reportaje seguimos el camino que cada año hacen miles de migrantes para aprovechar esta segunda oportunidad. De nuestro enviado especial Manu Terradillos “Flotaba la gente en el mar. Tenía mucho miedo, no sabes si vas a sobrevivir o vas a morir". Así habla Djeneba Kane, originaria de Costa de Marfil. Forma parte de los miles de migrantes que cada año se juegan la vida para alcanzar las Islas Canarias desde África. El año pasado fueron casi 18.000 los que llegaron al archipiélago a través de la conocida como Ruta Atlántica o Ruta Canaria, una de las más peligrosas, navegando hacinados en pequeños barcos llamados cayucos o pateras. “Llegué aquí con 16 años, cuando estaba embarazada. Vine de Marruecos en patera. Gracias a Dios, yo llegué sana y salva, pero fue muy dura la travesía en patera. Fue muy complicada porque estaba embarazada. Cuando estaba en la patera, vomitaba y me mareaba", explica Djeneba sobre su viaje. Canarias se ha convertido en destino de la migración irregular africana, dada su cercanía con la costa oeste del continente. El viaje lo suelen iniciar a pie en su país, hasta alcanzar alguno de los países costeros, donde pagan en ocasiones miles de dólares para tener sitio en una de las frágiles embarcaciones. En ocasiones, no tienen elección en su búsqueda de una vida mejor. Leer también“No sabes si vas a sobrevivir”: La Ruta del Atlántico, travesía migratoria letal hacia las Canarias Kalili Soukouna partió desde su Mali natal: “Yo llegué aquí el 14 de febrero de 2005 y tenía 14 años. Estaba en mi país. Un día cualquiera, como hoy, mi mamá se puso enferma. No tenía medios para llevarla al hospital y, al final, tomas decisiones como estas. Era toda una aventura sin saber lo que me iba a encontrar. Antes de la embarcación estuvimos prácticamente un mes de caminata, porque no teníamos dinero para coger taxis, para coger autobuses, para cruzar la frontera de Mali hasta Mauritania, donde tomamos el barco. El viaje duró tres días en el cayuco, que nos trajo hasta aquí, hasta Maspalomas. Yo soy uno de los pocos afortunados que, por suerte, llegué y puedo contar la historia. Muchos no han tenido la misma suerte", continúa. Una ruta migratoria letal Como bien lo sabe Kalili, es afortunado, porque esta travesía se cobró 1.900 vidas el año pasado, convirtiéndose en una de las rutas migratorias más letales. Él pudo alcanzar tierra con su cayuco; en otras ocasiones, los migrantes son rescatados en alta mar. José Antonio Rodríguez Verona es técnico de primera respuesta de Cruz Roja. Está entre los primeros que reciben a los migrantes cuando son rescatados en alta mar o llegan a tierra exhaustos: “Yo muchas veces en lo que más me fijo de la persona es en la mirada. Son miradas de ojos perdidos, miradas que no miran más allá del propio muelle. Sobre todo dan las gracias, no a nosotros, sino por llegar al destino en buenas condiciones". En lo que va de año, Cruz Roja ha atendido a más de 3.000 personas en estas circunstancias. Cuenta cómo, poco a poco, su perfil ha ido cambiando con el paso de los años: "Normalmente vienen del sur de África. Mayoritariamente son varones de entre 18 y 24 años. Pero sí es cierto que también estamos notando un aumento de familias. Están viniendo familias completas. Es decir, está viniendo el padre, la madre, con un menor; o un padre con su hijo; una madre con su hijo. Siempre están alegres porque han pasado una travesía muy dura y ya están en tierra, que eso para ellos es lo más fundamental". Una visita de León XIV para despertar conciencias La visita del papa León XIV a las Islas Canarias en mayo fue un momento histórico. El sumo pontífice se desplazó a dos de las islas, Gran Canaria y Tenerife, que cuentan con importantes centros de recepción para estos migrantes. El tema central de su viaje no fue otro que el de la migración, para despertar la conciencia de aquellos que no lo viven en primera línea, pero también para llamar la atención sobre esta ruta atlántica tan mortífera. Eloy Santiago, obispo de Tenerife, estuvo entre quienes le recibieron:"Creo que la visita del papa León XIV a Canarias va a traer, sobre todo, la posibilidad de que, a nivel nacional e internacional, se ponga el foco en el conocimiento de las realidades migratorias en esta ruta atlántica mortífera. Hasta ahora se ha subrayado mucho el tema del Mediterráneo, el tema de Estados Unidos y América, y la Ruta Atlántica queda un poco en el olvido. La presencia del Papa permitirá que los focos internacionales y, ojalá, como consecuencia, los organismos internacionales, los países, etcétera, vean que la cuestión migratoria no es una cuestión que afecte meramente a Canarias, ni siquiera a España, sino que es global y exige una respuesta global por parte de las instituciones". Sin embargo, llegar a tierra es el primer paso de un camino hacia una nueva vida. Kalili lo sabe bien, porque llegó siendo menor de edad, con 14 años. Aún hoy se dice sorprendido de la solidaridad y la ayuda que encontró: "Fue bastante complicado. Yo estuve en un centro de menores durante cuatro años. Allí conocí a un ángel, al que nosotros llamamos mamá Loli. Doy las gracias a esa persona que a mí me salvó la vida, porque tanto para la integración, el idioma y la alimentación… Gran parte de lo que soy hoy en día es gracias a ella". Maritza Legon trabaja en un centro de acogida de la Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado, no muy lejos de Las Palmas, en Telde, en el barrio de Marpequeña. Ella misma nos recibe y nos abre las puertas de sus instalaciones. Allí conviven medio centenar de personas. Comen, duermen, pero, sobre todo, reciben formación para integrarse. Desde el idioma hasta tareas básicas como pedir cita para el médico o inscribir a un hijo en el colegio. "Las personas que viven en nuestro centro son solicitantes de protección internacional, lo que comúnmente llamamos asilo. Ahora mismo la mayoría son de Mali, pero hemos tenido épocas, dependiendo de cómo va el mundo y de la situación económica y geopolítica, en las que hemos acogido a muchas personas de Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Honduras, Colombia, Rusia o Ucrania; muchas nacionalidades", cuenta a RFI. Además, Maritza explica que, antes de buscar su sitio en la sociedad española, muchos deben encontrar un momento de paz tras vivir una etapa traumática: "Tienen derecho a atención psicológica, porque muchas veces es muy, muy importante para que puedan ir avanzando. Muchos vienen con estrés postraumático por la experiencia que ha supuesto la travesía y la llegada aquí. Después van a clases de español hasta que alcanzan un cierto nivel y pueden pasar a buscar cursos de formación ocupacional. Esa es la parte fundamental, porque al final todas estas personas que llegan aquí lo que quieren es tener un futuro para trabajar y vivir dignamente, como queremos todos en la vida". El turismo, clave en la integración de los migrantes El turismo es precisamente uno de los sectores donde los migrantes encuentran trabajo. El año pasado las islas acogieron a cinco millones de visitantes, atraídos por sus playas y su clima, haciendo de este sector el gran motor de la economía de Canarias y aportando uno de cada cuatro empleos existentes. Estas robustas cifras económicas esconden un dato: la necesidad de la migración. Uno de cada cuatro trabajadores del sector es extranjero. Lo sabe muy bien José María Mañaricúa, presidente de la Federación de Empresarios de Hostelería y Turismo de Las Palmas de Las Palmas. Pese a las políticas de inmigración que defienden partidos como la formación de extrema derecha Vox, él asegura que los migrantes son fundamentales. "Lo que pasa es que estamos en una situación donde se mezcla todo: ideas políticas intentando entrar en la economía, cuando realmente hay que ver la realidad, ver cómo España va a necesitar en los próximos años mano de obra. Tenemos una población envejecida, con jóvenes europeos, españoles y canarios que no quieren trabajar en el sector servicios, y donde la mano de obra migrante va a sustituir a esas personas que se van a jubilar en los próximos años y va a suponer una mayor riqueza para nuestros países", cuenta a RFI a la entrada de uno de los hoteles que gestiona. Leer tambiénEn Canarias, donde el papa concluye su visita, la inmigración es esencial al turismo y la economía Entre esos trabajadores migrantes se encuentra Marcia Díaz, chilena llegada a Canarias hace 27 años. Empezó a trabajar de manera irregular, hasta que logró la documentación y ahora supera el cuarto de siglo de experiencia como camarera de piso en hoteles. Marcia no solo defiende la necesidad de los trabajadores migrantes, sino que además es portavoz en Canarias de la asociación Las Kellys, diminutivo de «las que limpian», que lucha para que este colectivo, formado principalmente por mujeres extranjeras, tenga mejores condiciones laborales. "La mayoría son mujeres migrantes, muchas de ellas sudamericanas, y también tenemos muchas compañeras africanas. La asociación se creó en 2014 mediante un grupo de Facebook, por las mismas razones de las que estamos hablando: las injusticias que se estaban cometiendo en los hoteles. Las camareras de piso somos una parte estructural de un hotel. Un hotel vende camas limpias. Por tanto, nuestro trabajo es esencial. Tenemos algo dentro de nosotras, como un fuego, esa necesidad de prosperar, de salir adelante y de no volver atrás a lo que estábamos pasando en nuestros países". Prosperar cuando se parte sin nada Ese es el siguiente paso: prosperar. Migrar suele suponer muchos sacrificios, incluido el de comenzar de cero, sin familia, sin papeles, en una situación en la que cualquier oportunidad es bien recibida. Alexa Martínez Mazabel llegó a Canarias hace nueve años y, pese a su experiencia en el campo de la comunicación, aceptó empezar trabajando en la atención a personas. Sin embargo, pronto descubrió que iba a ser muy difícil cambiar. Todas las ofertas y formaciones que le proponían siempre estaban relacionadas con el mismo sector. Ahora asesora a distancia a otras mujeres para ayudarlas a que no entren en esa misma espiral, puedan regularizar su situación de manera más fluida y optar a mejorar su vida personal y profesional. Para ello creó la comunidad Arraigadas: "Decidí hacer acompañamiento exclusivamente a mujeres migrantes que han tenido que pasar por las mismas situaciones que yo he vivido, trabajando en el sector del hogar y de los cuidados, del que muchas veces es difícil salir por las condiciones sociolaborales en España". Buscar su sitio en un lugar donde nadie te conoce. Ese es el gran desafío. "Hoy en día doy gracias a Dios porque puedo ganarme la vida y tengo gente a mi lado que me ayuda, me da consejos y que para mí son como mi familia", dice Djeneba, con su semblante serio.

That would be a commonsense conversation, about what resources we have and how we deploy them; but instead we see power actors, with the support of the White House and the Supreme Court, telling us that “ending homelessness” means tearing up people's tents, throwing away their belongings; a new law in Kentucky says officials can use “stand your ground” laws to shoot homeless people that don't “cooperate” with their eviction from private or public land. So: Is this really about addressing homelessness? Because we know how to do that. And if it's not: What is it about? And can we have an honest conversation about that? Manifesting Myth Trips People Up Have you ever been told that you're “not manifesting correctly,” and that's why what you want hasn't shown up yet? What a horrible and discouraging message which could make you want to give up entirely. I remember when someone said it to me! That's why Maritza offers Liberation Magic — a way of working with magic that frees you from the metaphysical industry's criticism, rules, and the idea that you're somehow doing it wrong. Liberation magic invites you to return to your intuition, your energy, and your deeper spiritual truth. When things aren't moving in your life, it's rarely because you're broken or incapable. More often, it's because we've been trying to create from the surface instead of from connection. Liberation magic asks you to slow down, drop beneath the noise, and listen for the wisdom that's already guiding you. Magic – Technology for Transformation So what is magic, really? Maritza describes it beautifully as “a technology for transformation.” It's a collection of tools, practices, and spiritual intentions that help shift what feels stuck and invites something new to emerge. Magic is far more than passive wishing. It's intentional, soulful participation with life's energy! When you merge a spiritual component with your intentions, something softens and opens. The process doesn't feel heavy or forced. Your desires have a way of coming into being because they're rooted in alignment, not effort alone. Think of it as learning to see your life through a spiritual lens where intention matters, energy matters, and presence itself becomes powerful. Mystical Garlic Planting I told a story about using magic when I planted my garlic this fall. Right from the start, When I planted the garlic, I didn't just push cloves into the soil, fertilize, water, and walk away. I planted at twilight — that quiet, liminal space between day and night, when the veil feels thinner. Then, I connected with the land and greeted the spirits and elemental forces. Next, I offered gratitude and asked to collaborate with them as the garden begins it's cycle of growth again. The reason is not because someone told me that's how it's done or good to do. This is how I live when I'm tuned into nature. As I listen to spirit and connect with my own inner knowing, everything comes alive. And that's the heart of liberation magic – where magic and manifestation meet. It’s not dones as a technique, but as a connection to spirit and life itself. Magic as a Way of Life Magic isn't only something you use when you want something to change. It can be how you move through the world. Maritza encourages her students to deepen their awareness of the moment they're in — the energy, the land, the subtle signals that are always communicating with us. That might look like ritual or meditation. You might simply notice your breath while you're standing at the sink or looking out a window. When spirituality becomes woven into daily life, you begin to move with the rhythms of the earth instead of against them. Challenges don't disappear, but your relationship to them changes. When my friend Maritza took a job that required traveling to many different cities by herself, she often felt lonely. But over dinner one night, she leaned in and told me, “Jen, I prayed and asked God to send me His people.” She went on to say it wasn’t long before she’d begun to meet other believers in Jesus on a regular basis.
