It's often emphasized as a defining factor in electoral politics: the ‘Latino vote.' But that simple phrase erases a far more complex political story. Maritza Félix, founder of the Spanish news service Conecta Arizona, has been covering the political evolution of Arizona's Latino community over the past decade. She joins host Kai Wright to discuss the future of Latino politics in Arizona from party affiliation to policy reform and prove while the mythical ‘Latino Vote' is constantly deemed influential, all Latino voters are not alike. Maritza comes to us from Feet in 2 Worlds, a project that brings the work of immigrant journalists to public radio, podcasts and online news sites. Welcome back to 3 More Questions, an episode series where we continue the conversation that we started last week with our featured guest. On this episode, we're talking about our interview with Maritza Montiel, former Deputy CEO and Vice Chairman of Deloitte, to learn how to summon the courage to take on big challenges. If you want a simple plan to improve as a leader, you can get one here for free — https://howleaderslead.com/plan
I hate to break it to you, but you won't make it very far as a leader unless you know how to summon courage. See, leaders have to speak their minds. They gotta get out of their comfort zone. They gotta take risks and dream big. All of that takes courage, and lots of it! That's why I'm so excited for you to hear from today's guest, Maritza Montiel, who has GOT to be one of the most courageous leaders I know. She's the former Deputy CEO and Vice Chairman of Deloitte and has blazed a trail as one of the most accomplished and admired women in corporate leadership. She believes we all have courage, and when you can tap into it, you can dream bigger, learn more from failure, take charge of your own career, and so much more. So here is my conversation with my good friend – and soon to be yours – Maritza Montiel.
Ten years ago, Mexican teenager José Antonio Elena Rodríguez was shot through the border fence by a U.S. Border Patrol agent. The agent believed the teen, standing in Nogales, Sonora, was throwing rocks at him and that he was in danger. The death launched a historic cross-border investigation that ultimately changed how the Border Patrol functions. But José Antonio isn't the only person to have been killed across the border between Mexico and the United States. His story became an example of those families who are still fighting for justice. This week on The Gaggle, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, host Ron Hansen is joined by Arizona Republic reporters Rafael Carranza and Maritza Dominguez. Alongside producer Amanda Luberto, they told José Antonio's story in season three of the Republic's investigation podcast, Rediscovering. After visiting Ambos Nogales for the 10-year memorial celebration, Rafael and Maritza share how José Antonio's case is still impacting the family and our legal system. On today's episode I'm being interviewed by one of my co-authors of our upcoming book UNLEASH HER! EEKK! YIKES!! Have you ever been excited and scared all at the same time? That's where I am right now. In my chapter, I talk about digging deep and finding some defining moments. Through the process I was able to identify many defining moments in my life that lead to my weight gain, binge eating and numbing my emotions. When you hear me say I had to face some issues that caused me to run to food over and over again, this is the kind of things I'm talking about. Sister, we all have them! I've not gotten to the point yet where I define myself as an author, but maybe a glorified journaler. Journaling works and I encourage you to find some journal prompts, take a free Heartwork journaling course or just do a good old fashion brain dump. That's right, just write everything that comes to mind and get it out of your head so you can think a little more clearly and your brain can have a rest. So a little correction, Mary Kay Ash was 45 not 52 when she started her business but still. I recently was at the Joyce Meyer conference and she mentioned she was 50 years old the first time she was on TV and now she's 79! Sisters we have a full life to live over 50. Always remember it's never too late! The Amazon eBook releases on October 25th with the paper copy coming a few weeks later. I'll be sharing the links to get your signed copy or the Ebook as soon as they are available. I hope you dig deep to find the woman inside and your UNLEASH HER into the world! Here's a few bonus reads https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/g4292/women-changing-lives/ https://www.careline.co.uk/success-top-10-late-bloomers/ Maritza has the Doodle Your Emotions course open now for only $10! A conversation with Maritza Silva Farrell, executive director of ALIGN NY, is a master class in organizing for systemic and transformational change. She starts by listening to people, primarily low-wage workers from communities of color who are disproportionately harmed by unjust and economically extractive public policies and corporate practices. ALIGN NY was founded to unite the labor and environmental movements and position them to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time, income inequality and climate change. It brings all stakeholders to the table, from labor and climate advocates to impacted workers, researchers, and lawyers. The approach, facilitating conversation, crafting collaboration, building powerful alliances, and creating a path that makes bold structural change possible has proven 100% effective. This model resulted in the passage of the Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act, the wholesale restructuring of NYC's commercial waste system and shut down Walmart's proposed entry into New York, to name a few victories. For all the gravity of the work, Maritza leads with joy, passion, and hopefulness. She demonstrates what is possible when we do the work.
