Trump May Have Committed The Same Mortgage Fraud He's Targeting Enemies For

Farron Balanced Daily

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 9, 2025 31:59

Donald Trump is forcing his Justice Department to go after his political enemies for mortgage fraud, and like always, this appears to be pure projection on Trump's part. An investigation by ProPublica has revealed that Trump likely did the exact same thing he's accusing everyone else of doing, which is taking out mortgages for homes and then violating the terms of the loan by renting out the properties. This happened in the 1990's, so the statute of limitations would prevent any prosecution, but it does explain why Trump thinks he can bust everyone else for this very specific crime. Donald Trump is terrified that the Supreme Court is going to take away his power to enact tariffs on any country for any reason, so he came out boasting that he'll just enact tariffs a different, albeit more complicated, way in the future. This was Trump's attempt to get the court to just let him do what he wants to do because he's going to do it no matter what, and it was painfully obvious that this was the point he was trying to make. The Supreme Court on Monday began hearing arguments in the case of Trump v. Slaughter, which is a case that conservative lawyers have been waiting for a long time to get settled. If the courts side in the conservatives' favor, which is the likely outcome, it would hand Trump the power to fire anyone and everyone that he wants within the executive branch of the government without cause or reason. This would give Trump complete control over every aspect of the executive branch, increasing his power in ways that could reshape the government for a generation. A leaked Department of Justice memo obtained by journalist Ken Klippenstein has revealed that Pam Bondi's DOJ is compiling lists of people that they claim are part of "domestic terrorist" groups, but in reality they are just people, organizations, and groups that are against the Trump agenda. Things that could get average people on these lists include expressing disdain for the administration's immigration raids, calling out the hypocrisy of the Religious Right, or even just expressing discontent with our capitalist economy. These are just a few of the new items that constitute "thought crimes" in modern day America.According to sources from the Department of Homeland Security, the sense around the agency is that Kristi Noem is going to be fired "really soon," as Trump has seemingly lost all patience with her. This comes as a bit of a surprise, considering the fact that Noem has been the public face of ICE since taking over DHS, and her raids have made headline news since the beginning. But Trump is reportedly not happy about the low deportation numbers, and loyalty can't overcome a lack of results. Young voters were shockingly supportive of Donald Trump in the election and through the first few months he was in office, but the tide has turned in a short amount of time and they now overwhelmingly reject him. According to the latest polling data, Trump went from having a 10-point net approval rating from voters aged 18 to 30, but now he is 47 points UNDERWATER with that age group. This makes up one of the largest demographics in the country, and if they have soured on Trump and the Republicans then next year's elections might already be settled.Text and and let us know your thoughts on today's stories!Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media! The term "Judeo-Christian" has been used by the Religious Right for decades as a positive shorthand for biblical values in the culture, so why are conservative Christians now rejecting the label? And why are Christian defenses of slavery and the Confederacy gaining popularity 160 years after the Civil War? Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn explain how the rising influence of Christian nationalism drives both trends. J. Ross Wagner, editor of the new book, "Being Christian After the Desolation of Gaza," talks to Skye about how both American and Palestinian Christians are reexamining evangelical support for Israel. Also this week, a woman has been hiding in the New Testament for nearly 2,000 years, and there's a new horror movie about a teenage Jesus. What could go wrong? Pick up a copy of Dr. Boedy's book: https://amzn.to/3JjnqQAMatthew Boedy was targeted by Turning Point USA in 2016 and listed on its “professor watchlist” after speaking up against allowing concealed guns on college campuses. As one of the foremost experts on Turning Point USA and its founder and CEO Charlie Kirk, Boedy exposes their role in perpetuating Christian nationalism in the United States and the threat to democracy they pose. With a background in journalism, an MFA in creative writing, and a PhD in rhetoric, he is a dynamic and experienced scholar whose first book, Speaking of Evil, explored the evolving rhetoric surrounding evil. Boedy currently teaches rhetoric and composition courses at the University of North Georgia and lives in Gainesville, Georgia, with his wife and two daughters.About his book, The Seven Mountains Mandate: Exposing the Dangerous Plan to Christianize America and Destroy Democracy:“A sobering assessment of the evolution of Christian nationalism.” –Publishers WeeklyExposing the decades-long plan to radically transform America, from Bill Bright and Loren Cunningham's 1975 “seven mountains” vision to Charlie Kirk's 2020 praise of Donald Trump for embracing it, The Seven Mountains Mandate reveals how prosperity preachers and political operatives are destroying democracy under Trump's second administration. The movement to install a populist strongman in the White House with a game plan for enforcing right-wing policies and catering to evangelical Christians started well before Donald Trump's first candidacy. For decades, a well-funded network of religious and political operatives has been quietly working to dismantle democracy and replace it with Christian theocracy. Their strategy? The seven mountains mandate—a plan to seize control of seven key pillars of American society and reshape the nation.Scholar Matthew Boedy exposes how this movement—driven by prosperity preachers, extremist politicians, and right-wing power brokers—laid the groundwork for Trump's presidency and is now advancing its agenda under his second administration. From local school board elections to billion-dollar megachurches, this multipronged effort is reshaping the country in ways most Americans don't even realize. Discover what has motivated the key players in this movement, how they've operated, and what is the unprecedented role of millennial “kingmaker” Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and the new face of Christian nationalism and the seven mountains movement, who believes that “we finally have a president who understands the seven mountains of cultural influence.”Today's news is so much more than the scattershot orders of an extreme administration. With Project 2025 policies in motion, the seven mountains movement is closer than ever to its goal of turning America into a Christian nationalist state. Leaders of this movement have been playing a long game, undermining democracy to establish a theocracy, but it's not too late to halt their progress and reverse the tide. This book reveals what's happening behind the scenes—and what you can do to stop it.(As an Amazon associate, I receive a small commission from purchases made through links on this site.)✖️✖️✖️Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboyspodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/✖️✖️✖️The content presented in this video is for informational and educational purposes only. Send us a textKen Fong and I unpack the life and legacy of Dr. James Dobson, who just recently passed away. For many of us, Dobson's voice was a constant presence in American evangelical homes. He was the trusted “family counselor” who seemed to offer simple, practical guidance about raising children, strengthening marriages, and protecting the home. His books—Dare to Discipline, Bringing Up Boys, Bringing Up Girls—were bestsellers, and his radio program reached countless millions. They shaped how countless parents understood what it meant to raise a family in a “Christian” way. On the surface, it all seemed non-political, even innocent. But as the years progressed, it became clear that Dobson was building something much bigger than a parenting movement. He founded Focus on the Family, moved his empire to Colorado Springs, and began to insert himself more directly into politics. Along the way, he inspired children's programming and homeschooling curriculum. He trained thousands of young people in “Biblical World View.” He became an outspoken promoter of Donald Trump. He engineered the identification of white evangelicalism with the Religious Right, commandeering the Republican Party into an unrelenting culture war. Ken Fong shares his research on the roots of Dobson's work in the discredited “science” of eugenics and names his mentor in psychology, the famed eugenicist and atheist Paul Popenoe. As Senator Barry Goldwater warned back in 1980, when religious leaders gain control of a political party, it creates a dangerous situation. Goldwater said, “These people believe they're acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise.” Dobson embodied that posture - NO COMPROMISE.For those of us who grew up under his influence, the costs were real. His insistence on “breaking the spirit” of children, corporal punishment, his crusade against the LGBTQ+ community — fighting same-sex marriage in California's Prop 8 campaign, promoting conversion therapy, framing homosexuality as a threat to children—all of these left deep wounds. Add to all that, he applauded and facilitated the election of this current wrecking-ball administration.    As we remember his legacy, we must not ignore his undeniable contribution to the rancorous Us-versus-Them culture in our perilously divided nation. In this episode, Ken Fong and I peel back the layers of Dobson's legacy. His death may close a chapter, but the impact of his divisive ideology continues to shape families, churches, and American politics.SHOW NOTESSupport the showBecome a Patron - Click on the link to learn how you can become a Patron of the show. Randall Balmer: Myth Busting Evangelical Activism & Its Origins

Homebrewed Christianity Podcast

What if everything you thought you knew about why evangelical Christians became politically active was completely wrong? Today I sit down with one of America's greatest historians of religion, Randall Balmer, to do some serious myth-busting. We dive deep into what Balmer calls "the abortion myth" - the widely believed but false story that evangelicals mobilized politically in the 1970s over Roe v. Wade. The real origin story? It's much more uncomfortable - it was actually about defending racial segregation in Christian schools when the IRS threatened their tax-exempt status. Balmer takes us through this hidden history he discovered firsthand at a 1990 gathering of religious right leaders, where architect Paul Weyrich admitted abortion "had nothing to do with" their political mobilization. We trace how a religious community that once championed prison reform, women's rights, and abolition transformed into today's Christian nationalist movement, and explore what this means for the future of American religion. From Jimmy Carter to Donald Trump, from the Jesus movement to Project 2025, this conversation reveals how evangelicalism lost its prophetic voice and became, in Balmer's words, dangerously "worldly." It's a sobering but essential look at how we got here - and whether there's any hope for course correction. Randall Balmer is one of America's leading historians of religion and a prominent scholar of evangelicalism. A professor at Dartmouth College, Balmer grew up in the evangelical subculture as the son of a preacher before earning his PhD. Balmer is the author of numerous influential books, including Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right, God in the White House, and America's Best Idea: The Separation of Church and State.  UPCOMING ONLINE CLASS - The God of Justice: Where Ancient Wisdom Meets Contemporary Longing This transformative online class brings together distinguished scholars from biblical studies, theology, history, and faith leadership to offer exactly what our moment demands: the rich, textured wisdom of multiple academic disciplines speaking into our contemporary quest for justice. Episode 12 arrives, the final episode in the serial series ‘Farewell Evangelicalism‘, designed to name malformed pillars that shape evangelical/conservative Christian thought and beliefs in hopes folks in the fold will leave, and those already on the way out have the tools to find their liberation. In this week's episode of then & now, LCHP Assistant Director Dr. Rose Campbell is joined by historian Dr. Neil J. Young to examine the evolution and ongoing influence of conservative Christian family values in contemporary U.S. political discourse. Neil offers a nuanced account of how ideals such as monogamy, cisgender heterosexual marriage, and rigid gender roles within a patriarchal framework became central both to conservative grassroots activism and to the ideological messaging of the Trump presidency and its supporters.Drawing on the intersecting histories of religious and political movements in modern America, Neil traces the crystallization of the so-called “Christian nation” narrative to the Cold War era and the emergence of the ecumenical movement, a collective effort by various denominations toward unity and social engagement. Despite the ecumenical movement's intended progressivism, it inadvertently prompted conservative backlash, resulting in a “religious right” coalition. Looking ahead, Neil notes increased uncertainty regarding the durability of the Trump-evangelical coalition. As the Trump campaign intensifies its deployment of culture war rhetoric—framing contemporary politics as an existential struggle to preserve embattled Christian values—the question remains whether these strategies will sustain coalition cohesion, or whether shifting social and political dynamics will prompt fragmentation. Neil J. Young is an award-winning historian, writer, podcaster, and author of Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right (The University of Chicago Press, 2024). Neil holds an A.B. from Duke University and a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University. Neil formerly served as a contributing columnist for The Week and, before that, an opinion columnist for HuffPost. He writes frequently for leading publications, including the Washington Post, the Atlantic, CNN, the Los Angeles Times, Vox, Politico, Slate, and the New York Times.

Colorado Springs City Council just threw their "inclusive" mask out the window, refusing to acknowledge Pride Month after three years, all because a Satanic group dared to utter "Hail Satan" at their parade. This isn't just about two words; it's a chilling display of hypocrisy and religious bigotry, driven by social media outrage that pushed a government body to discriminate against an entire community. While claiming to avoid "identity-based gestures," they weaponize religion against the LGBTQ+ community, proving that for some, the only identity that truly matters is their own narrow, Christian one. It's a bleak reminder that the fight for secularism and equality is far from over, especially when politicians cave to fear-mongering and pretend their religious intolerance isn't a political act. They demonize a non-theistic group for satire, while simultaneously harming queer individuals by making them feel "othered" and unsafe.News Source: Colorado Springs City Council Members Lash Out Over Pride Parade's "Hail Satan" Message By Hemant Mehta for The Friendly Atheist June 25, 2025

Supreme Court will hear challenge to Colorado conversion therapy banAxios, By Avery Lotz, on Mar 10, 2025https://www.axios.com/2025/03/10/supreme-court-conversion-therapy-challengeIn Colorado, a legal challenge is underway against a state ban on gender conversion therapy for minors. The case centers on Christian counselor Kaylee Charles, who argues that the state's prohibition of conversion therapy infringes on her free speech rights. The law, House Bill 19-1129, which came into effect in 2019, was designed to protect minors from potentially harmful practices that aim to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity. The case raises the question of whether this ban is a form of forced religious indoctrination or a necessary measure to protect vulnerable children.AJ and Infidel 64 discussed the issue, with AJ expressing the view that conversion therapy is not about free speech, as counselors are free to discuss various topics but should not force clients to conform to specific beliefs. Infidel emphasized the harm caused by conversion therapy, likening it to other forms of medical malpractice. Both agreed that such therapy is rooted in religious ideologies, and it's crucial to consider the potential harm to children, particularly when families pressure minors into undergoing conversion therapy.AJ highlighted that conversion therapy is banned in some states but remains legal in others, underscoring the need for broader protections. Infidel and AJ both pointed out that conversion therapy is primarily associated with religious organizations and driven by conservative ideologies that often reject the validity of LGBTQ+ identities. Infidel further criticized the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court, expressing concern that their stance on issues like same-sex marriage and LGBTQ+ rights could jeopardize the progress made in protecting these communities.Infidel concluded by emphasizing the scientific consensus against conversion therapy, which has been shown to harm LGBTQ+ youth and increase mental health risks, including suicide. Both agreed that conversion therapy should be banned and that the focus should be on supporting LGBTQ+ individuals' identities to promote their well-being.The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.12.1 featuring Jimmy Jr., AJ, and Infidel64.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Stewart writes for The New York Times opinion, New Republic and many others, and has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and NPR. In 2020 The Power Worshippers was acquired by producers Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, who subsequently based their documentary feature film, God & Country, on the book. Stewart's latest book Money Lies and God is available for preorder today! Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy In 2020, just months before the presidential election, acclaimed journalist Katherine Stewart released The Power Worshippers, a brilliantly reported book that acted as a wake-up call to readers: Christian nationalism must be taken seriously as a significant threat to the American republic and our democratic freedoms. The Power Worshippers cemented Stewart as a go-to authority on Christian nationalism and the current threats to American democracy, and inspired the recent documentary God & Country, produced by Rob Reiner. Stewart's explosive follow-up, MONEY, LIES, AND GOD: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy (February 18, 2025) exposes the inner workings of the “engine of unreason” roiling American culture and politics, but aims at a bigger and more challenging target: how did we get to the point where there is an organized political movement within the United States that is working to destroy American Democracy? Furthermore, why have so many Americans turned against democracy? In this deeply researched book, Katherine Stewart takes readers to conferences of conspiracy-mongers, backroom strategy gatherings, and services at extremist houses of worship, and profiles the people who want to tear it all down. She introduces us to reactionary Catholic activists, atheist billionaires, pseudo-Platonist intellectuals, self-appointed apostles of Jesus, disciples of Ayn Rand, women-hating opponents of “the gynocracy,” pronatalists preoccupied with the dearth of white babies, Covid truthers, militia members masquerading as “concerned moms” and battalions of spirit warriors who appear to be inventing a new style of religion even as they set about attacking democracy at its foundations. Along the way, she provides a compelling analysis of the authoritarian reaction in the United States. She demonstrates that the movement relies on several distinct constituencies, with very different and often conflicting agendas. Stewart's reporting and comprehensive political analysis helps reframe the conversation about the moral collapse of conservatism in America and points the way forward toward a democratic future. Give to help Chris make Truce Robert Welch was a candy magnate who invented the Sugar Daddy and sold favorites like Junior Mints and Milk Duds. He was also very anti-communist. His dubious research led him to found the John Birch Society, a group whose mission was to spread conspiracy theories worldwide. They had major support from wealthy men like Fred Koch, father of the Koch brothers (who financed opposition to Obamacare and climate change legislation). Some of their most notable campaigns were those against Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Earl Warren and President Dwight Eisenhower. They claimed that these men were communist sympathizers working behind the scenes to put the communist agenda. Bogus stuff, but they gained thousands of followers across the country. They also fought the income tax, said that black people would not have wanted equality if the communists hadn't taught them to, and argued that the US is a republic and not a democratic republic. Phyllis Schlafly, RJ Rushdoony, Tim LaHaye, and many others had ties to the birchers. This group had a huge influence on the Religious Right! Not to mention shifting the GOP to accept extremists. Our special guest for this episode is Dr. Matthew Dallek, a political historian at George Washington University. His book is Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right. Sources: Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right by Matthew Dallek Before the Storm by Rick Perlstein Divided We Stand by Marjorie Spruill Helpful Guardian article about the Koch brothers and Americans for Prosperity Christian Reconstruction: RJ Rushdoony and American Religious Conservatism by Michael McVicar NY Times article about J. Howard Pew's connections to Robert Welch Dark Money by Jane Mayer Discussion Questions What is the John Birch Society? Was communism a threat to the country in the mid-1900s? What would have been the proper way to respond to communism? What is the impact of conspiracy theories on American Christianity? There are real conspiracies in the US, like those by Donald Trump and his allies to steal the 2020 election. But a lot of Christians don't believe these real conspiracies. How has an abundance of false conspiracies numbed our ability to recognize reality? Are you surprised Tim LaHaye, Phyllis Schlafly, and RJ Rushdoony were affiliated with the JBS? How do we interact with the growing non-Religious Right in light of the mission of God's people? How will the church respond to the coming mental health crisis that Mark Halperin predicted?

Lavin takes her subjects seriously, but not uncritically, and especially focuses on the wrecked and ruined lives left in the wake of conservative evangelicalism's more conspiratorial and authoritarian elements, from the Satanic Panic to James Dobson's parenting manual on how to beat a "strong-willed child" into compliance. Along the way, they talk about the triumph of QAnon, End Times theology, the importance of the New Apostolic Reformation, and more—all with an eye toward how these religious views and practices help explain conservative evangelicals' overwhelming support for Donald Trump.Sources:Talia Lavin, Wild Faith: How the Christian Right Is Taking Over America(2024)— Culture Warlords: My Journey Into the Dark Web of White Supremacy (2020)— "The Sword and the Sandwich"Listen again:"The Prayers and Prophecies of Pat Robertson," Know Your Enemy, July 17, 2023
