It's hard to step into Superman‘s boots but Francesco Clark follows in his footsteps. In 2002, Francesco was working in the fashion industry at the esteemed magazine, Harper's Bazaar. After a devastating pool accident at the age of 24 that resulted in a spinal cord injury, Francesco went into a depression as he came to terms with the realization that he was paralyzed. It was only after Christopher Reeve died that Francesco had an epiphany that his own life needed to be lived to the fullest. “Believing in yourself despite the circumstances” is Francesco's number one piece of advice as he continues to Step Out of Line. Francesco Clark was 24 years old with a promising career at Harper's Bazaar when his entire world was turned upside-down. On June 1, 2002, Francesco dove headfirst into a swimming pool and crashed into the bottom. He became paralyzed from the neck down. Surgeons told his parents, “he will never breathe, talk or move his arms (on his own) - and forget about his legs.” His skin, now permanently impacted, was prone to breakouts, dry patches, and redness, creating a perfect storm of ongoing ailments. Francesco enlisted the help of his father, a medical doctor trained in homeopathy, to heal his skin. After five years and 78 formulations, the first Clark's Botanicals product was born. Today Clarks Botanicals Company is valued in the 10s of millions and available on Amazon, Space NK, Goop, and more.Francesco is also a national ambassador for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, helping to fund for the care and the cure of people with spinal cord injuries
Indie chats with Franceso Clark, Founder and CEO of Clark Botanicals, an anti-aging skincare brand that was introduced out of sheer passion and transformative purpose. Clark's life story was rewired following a mishap that left him paralyzed from the neck down. It had left him in a deep state of depression, making him question his reason for living. However, over time, Clark regained some movement and the ability to speak and breathe independently. But his mental state was still not there yet. Just when everything seemed to be falling apart, Clark began to realize that it wasn't only him who was in the struggle; it was also the rest of his family that was fighting with him in the process. That led him on a journey to transform lives, and Clark started Clark Botanicals with his father, a homeopathic doctor himself. What it turned out to become is an inspiring tale of reemergence and survival. Clark teaches to not only take responsibility for your one precious life, but also to become a part of the solution instead of relying on other people entirely - to help you come out of it. This is part 2 of an interview with the amazing Kim-Van Dang, the former beauty director of Instyle turned serial beauty entrepreneur. In this episode, Kim and I chat about how her love of fragrance helped her build profitable beauty businesses. Kim could see the writing on the wall before she decided to leave In Style. The internet and its impact on print publishing was going to change things significantly. So she began thinking about her next gig. She realized that she often gave free advice to CEOs about products, from naming to strategy and distribution, and it helped them make millions while she got a chicken salad lunch. That gave her the idea to launch KVDNYC, a 360-degree branding agency with an editorial edge. She worked with all the big brands: Estee Lauder, L'Oreal, P&G but was more gratifying was working with startup founders like Francesco Clark of Clark Botanicals to bring their brands to market. But then the 2008 recession hit and the phone stopped ringing. But it was a package from the perfumer Francis Kurkdijan that set her off into new areas of business with her new husband, Anthony, fragrance distribution. She shares how she got the Maison Francis Kurdjian line into Bergdorf and Neiman-Marcus during a challenging recession. Other brands came calling too like Cire Trudon and Coqui Coqui among others. Then came her retail store, Havens in Sag Harbor, NY. But her love of fragrance also inspired Kim to create an eponymous home line that has just launched in Bergdorf Goodman, Van Dang Fragrances.Find out what inspired the line, what makes it unique and its cosmic appeal. Other stores that carry the line will include: The Conservatory Hudson Yards Marissa Collections in Naples, FL Tesoro, Beverly Hills The Paris Market, Savannah Follow Kim on Instagram:@kvdnyc, @ilovehavens @vandangfragrances

Francesco Clark was 24 years old and his life was coming together when a diving accident left him paralyzed from the mid-chest down. Initially told he would never breathe on his own again or move anything from the injury site down, depression set in. It was not until Christopher Reeve passed away (3 years later) that he decided to take his life back. Around the same time, frustrated and unable to find cosmetics to combat skin conditions brought on by his SCI, Francesco, and his father (a doctor trained in homeopathic healing) began experimenting with different oils in their kitchen. Following years of work, the Clark's Botanicals Skincare line was born. It is now extremely popular, used by the likes of Madonna, Meryl Streep, and Julianne Moore in fact. Francesco joins me today on The QuadCast to discuss, among other things, his accident, his work with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, and ultimately how he is now “comfortable in his own skin” again. He has also very kindly offered my listeners a 25% discount on all of his products; by using the promo code The QuadCast 25 on his website: clarksbotanicals.com.
The few minutes every morning you take to smooth on skin care and consider yourself and the day ahead are far more significant than they seem, says Francesco Clark, the founder of Clark's Botanicals, a national ambassador for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, and the author of Walking Papers: The Accident That Changed My Life, and the Business That Got Me Back on My Feet. “It's about bringing forth and strengthening your inner hero,” says Clark. “And that spine-tingling sensation of walking down the street and feeling so in tune with yourself that a stranger smiles at you.” (For more, see The Beauty Closet hub.) When Francesco Clark started experimenting with skin care formulas, it was to help himself. At 24, a diving accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. That might sound like the beginning of Clark's Botanicals, the skin care company he founded, but it took a nudge from his former boss, Harper's Bazaar editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey. She applied the contents of a glass vial that Clark's sister, Charlotte, had spirited away from the founder's home laboratory at a visit a decade ago. "I got home and I was incredibly embarrassed because I was kind of like, 'Charlotte, this is not a brand.'" Bailey called a few weeks later to insist that she feature the product in Harper's Bazaar's September issue. The ball was in Clark's court to package his homemade product ("'make it look chic,'") into something marketable. Clark's Botanicals launched in stores that same year. Though the brand has been on roller-coaster ride the last four years -- Clark bought back his company last year after relying on private equity funding in 2016 -- he is feeling bullish about the future. "You have to remove yourself from it, you have to look at the business holistically and how committed your customers will be to the brand after it is acquired," Clark said. "If the investment means the brand is growing in the right ways, then you should do it."

What can make a beauty brand unique is often the founder’s story. There’s a trust and connection that just happens when you know hey - there’s an actual human behind this product! Often times those products are created to address an issue *said* founder has personal experience with, and for this episode’s guest, Francesco Clark, the origins of Clark’s Botanicals targeted exactly that. Except it wasn’t acne or the realization of a market white space that led him to the helm of his company - it was a near-death experience that left him paralyzed 16 years ago. “For me, when my skin stopped sweating after I had my spinal cord injury, everything went wrong with my skin. It looked like I was hyper-aging. It was dry but it was oily. It looked like I was developing rosacea.” So he teamed up with his doctor dad to create a solve, and in the process, made not only something tangible that could help others, but a whole new way to emerge from the traumatic aftermath of of his accident. @wherebrainsmeetbeautypodcast wherebrainsmeetbeauty.com
