I got forced to slow down, and it's the lesson I need to learn over and over again. In this episode, I read a personal essay from my Substack about a tennis injury that took me out mid swing. One minute I'm making an incredible shot down the line, the next I'm on the ground with my knee twisted and my foot throbbing. But this episode isn't really about the injury. It's about what happens when your body forces you to stop, and what that stillness makes you face, including grief I've been carrying since losing both of my parents. In this episode, you'll hear…The moment I went down mid-shot at a tennis clinic, and the very reaction that followed (spoiler: it involved refusing to stop playing)Why I instinctively downplayed the injury and tried to keep going, even with blood involvedThe connection I draw between forcing my body to heal on it's own timelineClick here to find the full show notes and transcript for this episode.EPISODE RESOURCES:Subscribe to Sam's SubstackRead today's essay I got forced to slow downGet Sam's weekly newsletter, Sam's SidebarIf you have a question you'd like Sam to answer on a future podcast episode, you can submit it here.Click here to be notified when new episodes of On Your Terms® come outCONNECT:Get Sam's weekly newsletter, Sam's SidebarFollow Sam on InstagramFollow Sam on YouTubeSubscribe to Sam's SubstackTake Sam's free legal workshop "5 Steps to Legally Protect & Grow Your Online Business"DISCLAIMER

Joel Gandara fled Cuba on an overcrowded boat at age 4, grew up in poverty, and built and sold a multi-million-dollar men's apparel company — without ever having a master plan. He joins Ted Phaeton on The Modern Man Podcast to unpack the arc, the tactics, and the brotherhood he now runs for men who want more.   Joel is a Cuban refugee, a former apparel entrepreneur (he acquired 13 of 14 businesses that weren't publicly for sale — using handwritten notes as the opening move), and the founder of 31 Daily Challenges and The Brotherhood — an invitation-only community of 119 men across the country who meet the standard through his 31-day challenge process. His wife runs the equivalent for women.   In this conversation: the Garbage Pail Kids origin story (fourth-grade entrepreneur, out of necessity), why he never had a master plan and figured everything out along the way, the $160K cash-withdrawal moment that shifted his identity, why 100% of his risks got green-lit by his wife (and the exit-plan discipline that earned that trust), the organize-organize-organize principle that made his apparel company sale-ready without a scramble, the handwritten-note tactic that led to 13 acquisitions, the Brotherhood model (invitation-only, intentionally slow-growth, 2–5 new invites per class), why the lone wolf is losing more than he thinks, how to vet mentors ("how are they living, not what they show"), the anti-vanity discipline ($49 Timex, no mortgage, used truck bought cash — the more things you own, the more things break), and the line every married man should stitch on his wall: pick the damn place. In this conversation, we get into his direct mail philosophy (why novelty beats clever copywriting, why your letter should be about the reader and not you), how he thinks about capital structure and tax efficiency, and his take on AI — that it's a powerful tool but not a durable moat. The edge still comes from domain expertise and knowing immediately which option is worth keeping. We also get into personal finance: a self-directed Roth IRA structure that's quietly been one of his best investments, and why most founders shouldn't be doing private deals. She asked his credit score on the first date. He showed up thinking it was a date, she showed up with a five-year plan. What happened next built an empire. Dedric and Krystal Polite are the husband-and-wife real estate powerhouse and stars of the hit show 50/50 Flip. After corporate layoffs, betrayal from business partners, and building from nothing, they turned their relationship into a multi-million dollar brand, without losing their marriage in the process. This conversation is about what it actually looks like to be equally yoked, build with intention, and create something that outlives you. In this episode: Why Krystal made entrepreneurship a non-negotiable on the very first date How a layoff two months into dating became the turning point that launched their first business Why most people stay stuck — and it's not strategy How paying for mentorship collapses a 10-year learning curve to 6 months How they define clear roles without stepping on each other as partners or spouses Why Dedric says "the inner me is the enemy" — and how personal development unlocks every level of business growth What it really takes to build a legacy that outlives you If you're building alongside a partner, battling the fear of investing in yourself, or wondering if your business can survive your relationship, this one will shift something in you. In this solo episode of Can't Be Contained, I'm pulling back the curtain on what I'm doing differently in 2026 — and why simplifying everything has been the most profitable decision of my career. We're talking: The hard truth about revenue vs. profit • Why I consolidated my entire tech stack into one platform • Shifting from complexity to clean systems • The move toward low-ticket offers and scalable impact • Building an all-female leadership team with strong energetic boundaries • Phone addiction, creativity, and protecting life force • Why recalibration years aren't failure — they're initiation This isn't a strategy episode. It's a recalibration episode. If you've built something successful but it no longer feels sustainable, this is your permission slip to simplify, refine, and build from nervous system alignment instead of pressure.
