Recent months had been wearing me down as I solo-parented, homeschooled our four kids, and kept up with the everyday life and needs of our home and family. Exhausted and bone weary, I headed out for vacation with my two oldest kids and my mom. I wanted a great vacation, filled with tasty BBQ and ice cream, sunshine, and a day at the beach full of rest and relaxation. Living in Wisconsin, we cherish our summers. We live for warm days where we can be outside, enjoying our beautiful state. The shores of Lake Michigan are full of prairie grass and dairy cows, calming waves, and clean beaches to be enjoyed. Upon arrival, we went directly to the bakery. My mom and I had been daydreaming over flaky, fruit-filled pastries. To our horror, as we walked into the shop, we were greeted with an empty pastry case. They were sold out. Dejected, I grabbed the last loaf of sourdough bread, paid, and left. Would this be how my whole vacation would go? We'd driven four hours, and all I wanted was a great getaway. The next day, we sat and contentedly munched sourdough fruit danishes. (This time we got up early to be sure they didn't sell out.) Checking the weather, we found rain headed our way. "My beach day," I cried inwardly. Consulting the radar, we assessed and made a plan. We could drive an hour in the rain, then get there, swim, and head back in the rain. I prayed we'd get our beach time even with the rain. I was desperate. Arriving at the small town on Lake Michigan, we looked at the sky. "Oh no! We have maybe 30 minutes," my mom reported. We were supposed to have a longer break in the rain, but the sky was darkening before us. We walked out to the old lighthouse, pausing to admire the view. The driftwood peppering the shorelines, the yellow sand, and deep blue waves rolling to their own beat. Yes, my heart needed the wide open spaces that came from being by the vast lake. Finding the swimming beach, we marched to the water. To our horror, we found gray sludge slopping up out of the waves. What!? Rain clouds came closer as we raced to the next beach. Drops started falling as we once again marched toward the water. My son barely reached the sludgy lake before the rain started falling harder and faster. Instead of taking a dip in the lake, he and my 64-year-old mother started running for the car. Defeated, I trailed after. Worst vacation ever. I texted my mother-in-law– "I need a vacation do-over." All I wanted was a great vacation, rest for my weary soul, and relaxation. What I'd gotten wasn't that at all. I drove us back to the house and went for a walk after the rain stopped, talking with God. The dark blue stormy sky is a vibrant backdrop to the cornfield and wildflowers in the ditches. As I walked and talked, I expressed my sadness about my horrible vacation. I pondered why, even though I saw the vast lake and had time relaxing, I still felt weary to my bones. I didn't get an immediate answer. I had to sit with it–my discontentment. During the long drive home, I continued to mull over thoughts. My realization came in the silence of sleeping kids and a phone-scrolling mom. My weariness wouldn't be fixed by a weekend away. It would be better if I habitually rested and sought God. My expectation was that a great summer vacation would fix the fatigue I'd been feeling; instead, I had disappointment and frustration.  However, out of the experience, truth struck me. Yes, vacations are great, and time in God's creation is so beneficial, but it doesn't make up for the lack of physical or mental rest. More importantly, even a good vacation doesn't fill your soul the way that time with Jesus does. In Luke 5:16, Jesus shows us an example of going away from the crowds to spend time with his Father, God. The more I look at my summer routine, the more I recognize my lack of this personal time dwelling with Jesus. As you enter the summer months, I encourage you to plan times to rest your body and soul.  Make time in your schedule to rest. You don't have to take a vacation or trip in order to make the downtime; simply plan for it. Be intentional with your Summer plans. Leave space for down days when you can relax. Title: "The Road to Emmaus: Finding Hope in Disappointment" Scripture: Luke 24:13-35 Series: After Easter: Encounters with the Risen Christ (Week 2) Easter Sunday is glorious. The tomb is empty. Jesus is risen. Victory is declared. But what about the week after Easter? When you go back to work, back to the same problems, back to the same struggles that were there before Easter even happened? When disappointment doesn't magically disappear just because the resurrection is true? On the very first Easter—on resurrection Sunday itself—two disciples were walking away from Jerusalem in complete disappointment. They had heard the reports. The tomb was empty. Angels said Jesus was alive. But they didn't know what to do with it. So they left. Heading home to Emmaus, seven miles away. Dejected. Confused. Hopeless. And that's when Jesus showed up. Luke 24:15 tells us: "While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them." But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. Why? Because Jesus wanted to meet them in their disappointment first—not with a miracle, but with His presence. He walked beside them. Listened to them. Let them pour out their confusion and grief. Verse 21 gives us the key phrase: "But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel." We had hoped. Past tense. The language of shattered expectations. Here's the first truth: Jesus meets us in our disappointment. Not after we fix it. Not after we understand it. Not after we get over it. But right in the middle of it. Hebrews 4:15 says Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses—He knows what it's like to have expectations shattered. He doesn't scold you for being disappointed. He walks with you. Then Jesus did something remarkable. Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He opened the Scriptures to them. He showed them how all of it—every promise, every prophecy—pointed to the Christ who would suffer and enter into His glory. And as He spoke, their hearts began to burn (verse 32). Not because they recognized Him yet, but because the Word of God was doing its work—reframing their disappointment in light of God's plan. Here's the second truth: Jesus opens our eyes through Scripture. When you're disappointed, you need God's Word. Not for quick answers, but to reframe your perspective. To show you that what looks like defeat might actually be God's victory. Hebrews 4:12 says the Word is living and active—it pierces to the heart and reframes our pain. When they arrived at Emmaus, Jesus acted as if He were going farther. But they urged Him strongly: "Stay with us" (verse 29). He didn't force Himself on them. He gave them a choice. And when they invited Him in—when they made space for Him at the table—He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened. They recognized Him. Here's the third truth: Jesus reveals Himself when we invite Him in. Revelation 3:20 says, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in." You can hear sermons, read the Bible, know theology—but until you invite Jesus into your life, into your disappointment, into your brokenness, you won't fully see Him. And when these two disciples recognized Jesus? Everything changed. Verse 33: "They rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem." They didn't wait until morning. They turned around. Disappointment turned to hope. Confusion turned to clarity. Sadness turned to joy. And they couldn't keep it to themselves. So here's the question: What disappointment are you walking away from today? What shattered expectation? What unanswered prayer? What broken dream? Jesus is already walking with you. You just need to recognize Him. Open the Word. Let Him reframe your disappointment. And then invite Him in: "Stay with me, Lord. I need You." And watch what happens. Your heart will burn. Your eyes will open. And you'll turn around—not back to the same old life, but forward into a life transformed by the risen Christ. Because the tomb is empty. Jesus is alive. And He's walking with you. Even when you're disappointed. Especially when you're disappointed. Don't walk away. Turn around. Follow the Prophet with your mind's eye. Hour after hour he plods along beneath the burning sun, his feet blistered by the scorching sands, alone in the dreary desert. At last fatigue and anguish overcame his sinewy strength and he "came and sat under a juniper tree: and requested for himself that he might die" (1 Kings 19:4). The first thing we would note in this connection is that disheartened and despondent as he was, Elijah made no attempt to lay violent hands on himself.

Eddie's concerned about Clarrie, whose hands are swollen and sore. With turkey plucking day fast approaching it leaves them with a problem. Clarrie shouldn't be doing it, but she sees little alternative. Everyone she's tried for help is busy. Eddie ponders; there must be something they can do. Later Clarrie's horrified to find Eddie's taken the back off the washing machine. He's had an idea that might make her life a bit easier. Clarrie retorts the only thing that will do that is if he puts the machine back together, this instant. Reassuringly Eddie makes a trip to the scrapyard and acquires a drum and motor to progress his plan. He now has the makings of a Grundy Turkey Plucker! No more hand plucking necessary – Clarrie won't have to lift a finger. Sceptical Clarrie's will believe it when she sees it.Chris makes plans to drop off Martha for a sleepover while he has a date with Carly. When George finds out Martha's staying at Little Grange he says he'll come over – he hasn't seen Martha for ages and misses her. He wants to check in on Ed anyway. Emma hesitates before agreeing it's fine. Later Ed and Emma note how pleased Martha was to see George. Emma's glad he's come. However Chris calls in unexpectedly and is shocked to find George there. This can't happen, and Alice would agree. He takes Martha home. George feels bad; he understands where Chris is coming from. Dejected, he leaves. How do you dry your wet belongings while traveling, especially when you're solo? Especially in a humid area, it's hard to get things dry. When you solo travel, you have more control over your time constraints, so plan to let things dry. When it's damp, the best way to dry your clothes is by maximizing water removal before drying.  Try the towel roll trick. First, lay the clothes flat on a towel, roll them up, and twist to ring out the moisture. Use strong airflow and ventilation, such as fans or dehumidifiers, and space clothes out for even evaporative drying indoors. If safe, place clothes near a heater or radiator, but not directly on it, for fire safety. Use a dryer if possible. Store thoroughly dried clothes in airtight containers or use moisture absorbers if needed. Part 2   This is part 2 of my visit to Medellin, Colombia. Colombia was the first country on my trip, and I really enjoyed Medellin, even though it was raining a lot of the time I was there. For the most part, I felt safe. Part 1 discussed the changes since the 1990s and a few of the attractions I suggested. There have also been some problems. Drug Trafficking Today Colombia remains the world's leading cocaine producer, and armed groups and organized crime still participate in the trade, according to InSight Crime. While the infamous Medellín Cartel no longer operates, its historical legacy persists. Try the Poblano neighborhood. I swam in the rooftop pool at the Los Patios Suites hostel, which provided a relaxing soak, and it offered views of the surrounding neighborhoods. It rained a lot in this city in May, which was during the fall season. One of the drawbacks of the rain and humidity was the presence of mosquitoes. My shoes got wet and never really dried.   Final Thoughts on Medellin Safety: Medellín is significantly safer than it was in the past, but it's still advisable to avoid risky situations, such as unplanned nightlife excursions or meetups through dating apps. Drug Trafficking: Still present at broader levels, but doesn't dominate everyday tourist life—unless one seeks it out. Itinerary Picks: For women over 50, I'd highlight coffee tours, Comuna 13 storytelling, parks like Arví, cultural sites like Nutibara and Palacio de la Cultura, and the bike-share system—each offering memorable, relaxed experiences with minimal risk. Smart Move and Slip-up pairing: I got hit by the caffeine in Colombia. Too much. I had a hard time falling asleep. So don't order a full cup, or only drink half. I had trouble sleeping due to the coffee I had at noon. Hyped up all day! Cut out caffeine if you're not accustomed to the buzz and want to sleep well. Take away mantra and goodbye.   In Medellin, I got lost and turned around to go back, frustrated and weary. It was raining. I was soaked. Dejected and upset, I was mad at myself and felt bad. But then something changed. The next thing I saw was a Christian church that was just about to start its service, so I stayed for two hours. God was with me on that journey. A woman in the church had her Uber driver drop me off near the metro, so I could then continue on my journey. The day turned out better than expected. I'm leaving you today with the hope that your next trip will have a positive impact on you and others as well.

EPISODE 5:  John, Hal, and Kerrie interrogate Todd Rice in the police station at Hope Springs. He has a record as a juvenile repeat-offender with links to gang activity in cities like Gotham and Detroit. It's clear that he is quite mentally disturbed, unwilling to speak to them openly and cryptically stating that Hal is a “black shadow” clinging to John's light. While examining the Starheart in evidence, Hal gives some background on the link between it and John's lantern. Though both were created by the Guardians of the Universe, the Starheart was a far more primal, uncontrollable source of power. It was only later that they refined the “green element” into something suitable to be used as a weapon, meaning that the Starheart is effectively a prototype. Hal tries to harness the power of the Starheart with Alan Scott's ring, but the power does not avail itself to him. To Kerrie, Hal privately voices his desire to have a ring of his own once again. It seems he's allowing himself to finally drop his “tough guy” persona and be vulnerable with her, and things almost get intimate – but Kerrie pulls back, and Hal instantly clams up again. The next day, the owner of the Grasping Flats halfway house arrives at the police station to “bail” Rice out. The man is William Macon, a wealthy local real-estate mogul and Rice's personal caretaker. He provides an alibi that all but exonerates Rice of any wrongdoing – Rice has recently begun working for and living with Macon at his own private estate, where Macon runs a religious institution meant to reform troubled youths. He also provides a reason for the Starheart's existence in Rice's possession: Alan Scott gifted it to his son shortly before his death. A scan with John's ring reveals that Macon is telling the truth, and despite the fishiness of the situation, Sheriff Kerrie convinces the Lanterns to let Rice and Macon walk free with the Starheart. John is livid at having to do this, but Hal insists it's the right call overall. John flies off to investigate Macon himself, much to Hal's chagrin. Kerrie remarks that Hal's hotheadedness must be rubbing off on the younger GL. Investigating Macon's estate and institution (the Hand of God's Mercy), John finds no apparent evidence of any foul play. He does, however, find Macon's wife Zoe, whom he is immediately spellbound by. Zoe insists that her husband is a good man, and though it's clear John isn't fully convinced, he relinquishes his brazen violation of her family's privacy and leaves. Dejected that the evidence trail has gone seemingly cold, John retreats to a local bar where he finds Hal. The two reminisce about their shared frustrations. As they do, they see a familiar face on TV: Guy Gardner, Earth's other Green Lantern, is showboating in Des Moines not far from Hope Springs. Guy is John's “sector partner,” though they've never truly worked together. Hal reveals that Gardner's current power ring is actually Hal's old one, and John mischievously proposes that Hal reclaim it. Hal grins. END EPISODE 5

Many managers don't know what to say when a team member appears angry, frustrated, or sad. They might even feel it is unprofessional to acknowledge those feelings at all. But research shows that avoidance is costly. Doctoral student Christina Bradley and professor Lindy Greer, both of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, say teams perform better when their leaders respond effectively to members' emotions. The researchers outline when and how to do that in a way that builds stronger relationships, teams, and organizational culture. Bradley and Greer are coauthors, with Michigan Ross professor Jeffrey Sanchez-Burks, of the HBR article "When Your Employee Feels Angry, Sad, or Dejected."

She considers Sansa's possible alternative locations and gets awfully close to the truth. She discovers that a familiar face (to us) is following her. Simon and Jenny wish Brienne would follow her instincts.Chapter Review:Brienne of Tarth arrives in Duskendale; her first official destination on her journey to find Sansa Stark. Her House Lothston shield gives her trouble at the town gate and the guard suggests his sister as an artist to repaint the shield. After dropping the shield off and describing a sigil she'd like to see on it, she makes for the Dun Fort. The lord of the Dun Fort is absent so she is shown to his maester. After reading her letter from King Tommen proving she is on official royal business, the maester reveals she's not the first to ask about Sansa and Dontos Hollard; more like the 21st.The maester breaks it to Brienne that Ser Dontos had little ties to Duskendale, as the rest of his family was wiped out years previously. Dejected, Brienne leaves and returns to the inn to wait on her shield. At the inn, she meets a dwarf holy man who tells her of a fool in Maidenpool with two travel companions. It intrigues Brienne enough to consider it as her next stop. The next morning the shield is delivered to her and exceeds her expectations. Brienne heads north up the coast but realizes she's being followed. She springs a trap on the unwanted company. Nine-year-old Dan Gill arrived with his best friend Archie at their classmate’s birthday party. When the mother of the birthday boy saw Archie, however, she refused him entry. “There aren’t enough chairs,” she insisted. Dan offered to sit on the floor to make room for his friend, who was Black, but the mother said no. Dejected, Dan left their presents with her and returned home with Archie, the sting of his friend’s rejection searing his heart. Now, decades later, Dan is a schoolteacher who keeps one empty chair in his classroom. When students ask why, he explains it’s his reminder to “always have room in the classroom for anyone.” A heart for all people can be seen in Jesus’ welcoming life: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). This invitation may seem to contradict the “first to the Jew” scope of Jesus’ ministry (Romans 1:16). But the gift of salvation is for all people who place their faith in Jesus. “This is true for everyone who believes,” Paul wrote, “no matter who we are” (Romans 3:22 nlt). We rejoice then at Jesus’ invitation to all: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29). For all seeking His rest, His open heart awaits.

However, if he utilizes the golden opportunity he is being given, he could soar to the greatest heights and capitalize on all of the potential gains awaiting him. The Gemara tells us about some of the wondrous benefits that come to a person who overlooks when he is wronged, including being forgiven for his sins and given extra years of life. The Zohar HaKadosh brings the story of Rabbi Abba who witnessed another man experience great miracles because he always forgave everyone who wronged him. One of the mefarshim explain the way it works. It is the nature of a person to want to take revenge when he is harmed. His initial reaction is usually one of hate. He never wants to look at the person again and surely not befriend him. By overcoming that nature, the person is acting in what is called למעלה מהטבע – above nature. And the midat hadin of Hashem is only able to affect what is in nature. When a person rises above his nature, he is freed from all dinim . No prosecuting angels can speak negatively of him. And thus, he becomes surrounded by Hashem's chesed . Revenge may be sweet, but overcoming our midot will turn out to be so much sweeter in the long run. I read a story about a woman who asked her daughter-in-law to help a week before Pesach with Pesach cleaning. She basically wanted her to throw away all the old things that she didn't use any more, including clothing, and help her organize so that she could have her house in order to clean properly. When the daughter-in-law started, the mother-in-law went out to run some errands. She tackled the job with gusto. At one point she decided to work on her mother-in-law's bedroom closet. She saw some old clothing that had gone out of style decades before. She knew her mother-in-law never wore any of them so she got rid of them. A few hours later, her mother-in-law returned. She looked around the apartment appreciatively, happy to see the progress that her daughter-in-law had made. While looking around, she noticed three old outfits were removed from her closet. Her heart clenched with trepidation. Inside those three outfits, she had been storing her three most valuable pieces of jewelry. She ran out to the dumpster to see if she could find the bag with the old clothing, but the city of Bnei Brak had already stepped up its garbage collecting efforts in view of the upcoming Yom Tov. The dumpsters had already been emptied. Dejected, she climbed the stairs back to her apartment and with each step she took, her anger grew. A few moments before she opened the door, she said to herself, “Yelling at my daughter-in-law won't bring back my jewelry. All it will do is cause a major fight. I'll wait and maybe in a few weeks I'll mention it when I calm down.” Then, before she entered the house, she made a tefila , “ Ribono Shel Olam , only You know how precious that jewelry was to me. You know how a woman feels about jewelry and how hard it is to restrain myself from saying anything now to my daughter-in-law. I still have three precious jewels at home, three adult children, two boys and a girl, who haven't yet merited to find their match. Please, let me rejoice with those jewels finding their zivug .” She then put on a smile and entered the house as if nothing happened. When her daughter-in-law finished cleaning, she thanked her for her help and they parted on good terms. Within two weeks, she received great suggestions for all three of her children and they all became engaged around the same time. After the third engagement took place, the woman said, “For my first child to get married, I said the entire Tehillim every day for 40 days. For my second, I said Perek Shira for 40 days, and for my third, I said Nishmat every day for 40 days. Now HaKadosh Baruch Hu showed me that with a short tefila and a lot of self-control, in a matter of seconds, one can merit marrying off three children.”

Sometimes what we think is a setback in our lives could actually be God's way of setting us up for something greater.

This past weekend, just a few days before turning 61, Heather ran her second fastest half marathon. 1:27:51. A result that is a World's Best for her age group (60-64) and pending American and World Record (1:28:21). This episode was recorded last spring two weeks after she set the Boston Marathon record in the women's 60-64 age group. A record previously owned by Joan Benoit Samuelson. If all we did was acknowledge that a record was broken and that the impossible had been accomplished... we'd be celebrating for weeks and then life would move forward as it does. But the reality is that what Heather Knight Pech accomplished in the Boston Marathon is far more than her finish time of 3:03:47. It's far more than winning the division (60-64). And it's certainly far more than breaking the record held by Joan Benoit Samuelson. It's been 3 years since since Heather last finished Boston - a race that lives in her soul. It's been a bit over 1.5 years of injury that left Heather wondering if the best was behind her. But the success Heather found on Monday isn't found in the result... it's the in-between time where the story is truly told.
