EPISODE 5:  John, Hal, and Kerrie interrogate Todd Rice in the police station at Hope Springs. He has a record as a juvenile repeat-offender with links to gang activity in cities like Gotham and Detroit. It's clear that he is quite mentally disturbed, unwilling to speak to them openly and cryptically stating that Hal is a “black shadow” clinging to John's light. While examining the Starheart in evidence, Hal gives some background on the link between it and John's lantern. Though both were created by the Guardians of the Universe, the Starheart was a far more primal, uncontrollable source of power. It was only later that they refined the “green element” into something suitable to be used as a weapon, meaning that the Starheart is effectively a prototype. Hal tries to harness the power of the Starheart with Alan Scott's ring, but the power does not avail itself to him. To Kerrie, Hal privately voices his desire to have a ring of his own once again. It seems he's allowing himself to finally drop his “tough guy” persona and be vulnerable with her, and things almost get intimate – but Kerrie pulls back, and Hal instantly clams up again. The next day, the owner of the Grasping Flats halfway house arrives at the police station to “bail” Rice out. The man is William Macon, a wealthy local real-estate mogul and Rice's personal caretaker. He provides an alibi that all but exonerates Rice of any wrongdoing – Rice has recently begun working for and living with Macon at his own private estate, where Macon runs a religious institution meant to reform troubled youths. He also provides a reason for the Starheart's existence in Rice's possession: Alan Scott gifted it to his son shortly before his death. A scan with John's ring reveals that Macon is telling the truth, and despite the fishiness of the situation, Sheriff Kerrie convinces the Lanterns to let Rice and Macon walk free with the Starheart. John is livid at having to do this, but Hal insists it's the right call overall. John flies off to investigate Macon himself, much to Hal's chagrin. Kerrie remarks that Hal's hotheadedness must be rubbing off on the younger GL. Investigating Macon's estate and institution (the Hand of God's Mercy), John finds no apparent evidence of any foul play. He does, however, find Macon's wife Zoe, whom he is immediately spellbound by. Zoe insists that her husband is a good man, and though it's clear John isn't fully convinced, he relinquishes his brazen violation of her family's privacy and leaves. Dejected that the evidence trail has gone seemingly cold, John retreats to a local bar where he finds Hal. The two reminisce about their shared frustrations. As they do, they see a familiar face on TV: Guy Gardner, Earth's other Green Lantern, is showboating in Des Moines not far from Hope Springs. Guy is John's “sector partner,” though they've never truly worked together. Hal reveals that Gardner's current power ring is actually Hal's old one, and John mischievously proposes that Hal reclaim it. Hal grins. END EPISODE 5

Kurt Takes Twat Lessons. In 8 parts, based on the works of Bardot1990. Listen to the ► Podcast at ExplicitNovels. At the end of first period Paula Fuller happened upon a casual friend, Kurt Kuhlmann, Denise Allen’s boyfriend. Paula and Kurt had several classes together; they had a casual relationship. Paula served as Kurt’s occasional confidant, a relationship that came about due to Kurt’s friendship with one of Paula’s ex-boyfriends. Kurt and Paula’s friendship outlasted that relationship and had taken on a life of its own.“Hey Kurt!” Paula challenged. “Whatcha doin’?”Kurt responded, “Meh. Have you seen Denise? I can’t find her.”Paula was aware of Denise’s “every three days” rule and the rationale behind it. (Denise liked being blasted with a cum tsunami as opposed to a series of smaller pops.) Paula empathized with Kurt. She listened to his gripes about being subject to Denise’s cunny ration.“It’s Thursday!” Paula laughed. “You must be ready!”Kurt’s look of woe contradicted the happy face he usually displayed on his scheduled days with Denise.“Uh-oh,” Paula cautioned.“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Kurt groused. He could hide his disappointment at being shunted aside by his girlfriend. His “acceptance” of Denise’s caveat that morning had caused a rift between them. Sharon Minor had recently given him a mini-blowjob to assuage his fragile ego. Still, Kurt sought out Denise, hoping that she might re-consider. He mentioned most of this to Paula, all except the mini-blowjob part. Secretly, he hoped Paula might follow Sharon’s lead. Paula would certainly be less empathetic given knowledge of Kurt’s congress with Sharon.Paula Fuller went to her second period class consumed with concern over her friend Kurt’s problem. Of course, she knew all the pertinent details. Kurt wasn’t shy about spreading his business around. She often assured him that most boys his age cum as soon as they get it in. Women expect it. It’s not the first insertion that makes for an enjoyable fuck session; it’s usually the third, Paula suggested, when a man’s cock sensitivity has diminished.Paula knew that this fact would do little to allay Kurt’s ego. She knew, too, the person most in need of this bit of insight was Denise. Alas, she and Denise weren’t close enough to discuss the vagaries of unprotected Cuntl sex. If Paula even deigned to broach the subject, Denise would know she’d been having intimate conversations with Kurt.Even as Paula considered Kurt’s plight, she was mindful of her own need. Where was that damned James Kittridge? He seemed to be possessed of an unusual measure of stamina. Their sessions earlier that week had been decidedly memorable, cooling Paula’s rampant Cuntl burn with precision. Paula was in dire need of a top off. Perhaps she might find James and use him to clear her mind, using his dick. That was her intent, anyway.Paula rushed from her second period class to the school gym, hopeful of heading James off at the pass. Her blood was up. She’d gone without the day before. She thought that James might be amenable to a quickie, maybe not with dick, but certainly with some tongue. Her cunny moistened with anticipation.James was nowhere to be found. He didn’t even show up to gym class. Dejected, Paula trudged off to her third period class. She passed Denise Allen in the hallway and nodded a cordial hello. Denise recognized Paula as part of Kurt’s extended circle. She didn’t know the nature of Paula and Kurt’s friendship, but didn’t think much of her. Denise acknowledged Paula’s nod rather less cordially than it had been offered. It was a diss. Paula took Denise’s coolness as a slight. They were women. Cattiness came as part and parcel of the genre. Now it occurred to Paula that she might have a card to play in this newly perceived melodrama: Kurt Kuhlmann. Kurt and Denise were at loggerheads, right? And this friggin’ cunt had the nerve to friggin’ diss? James might not be available, but Kurt certainly was. Besides, he was a friend. And he needed some attention. Right?Resolutely, Paula went in search of Kurt. She snagged him just as the third period bell sounded. He was already seated in class. Paula peeked into his classroom. She caught his eye and gave him the “C'mere” look. Kurt immediately responded, stepping into the hallway beside her.“Listen,” Paula said, “If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, I want to talk.”“Sure,” Kurt said.“Kurt, I’ve been thinking about your problem. I keep trying to tell you that it happens to all men, but you don’t want to listen. If you like, I can show you a few things that might help.”“Whaddaya mean?” Kurt responded quizzically.“I saw your girlfriend in the hall a few minutes ago. She dissed me for no reason. I don’t like her, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. I can show you some things. Maybe you can get her back. If you want her.”This was Sharon’s schpiel, too. Kurt immediately recognized Paula’s offer as booty call. How Denise’s diss metastasized into a booty call wasn’t his concern. First, Sharon had given him a mini-suck. Now Paula wanted in on the game. Kurt reckoned that his relationship problems tended to be cunt magnet. He resolved to have more of them.“Show me some things? Like what?” he asked, already knowing the upshot.“Follow me,” Paula advised.By now the school hallways had cleared considerably. Paula and Kurt had the main thoroughfares to themselves. Paula explained her rationale.“Kurt, this problem you have with Denise’s, er, ‘snapper’, is very common. I’ve told you this before. You get it, in, and all of a sudden its over. That’s good for you. But it’s bad for her. From what you’ve told me, she doesn’t seem to mind if you’re, quick. She minds that your, your, 'Money shot’, isn’t forceful enough. Do I have that right?”Kurt nodded in agreement.“OK. You’re lucky. Most women want you to have a little more stamina. As I see it, what you need is a method to stock up on blast fuel. That way, when you , 'Finish’, she can feel the, 'Rush.”Again, Kurt nodded his assent. In his mind he was thinking that Paula was going to suggest an artificial supplement that suppresses semen delivery while narrowing the delivery pipe, thus increasing the force of delivery. He’d done some PVC sprinkler work; the concept of successively narrowing pipes to increase delivery pressure was familiar to him.Paula continued.“Kurt, what you have to do is put it in, move it around a bit, and then pull it out just Before the, Finish, becomes inevitable.”“Pull it out?” Kurt wondered, bewildered at the thought.“Yes, Kurt. Pull it out. Pull it out and don’t touch it. Let it catch its breath. Then try her again.”“I don’t know if I can do that. It all happens so fast.”“Well, the idea is to develop a tolerance. It’s like taking a hit of cocaine. The first time you do it, it blows you away. Maybe the second time, too. But after that it takes more and more cocaine to do the trick. You develop a tolerance. You need to develop a tolerance for, you know, cunt.”“But she can suck me or we can do it up the booty and I don’t cum too fast,” he commiserated.“We’re not talking about her mouth or her ass, Kurt. We’re talking about her CUNNY.”“She cums when I put it up her cunt,” Kurt protested.“Yeh, but she wants a quality orgasm, Kurt. There’s a difference between cumming and CUMMING.”“So what do you suggest?” Kurt asked.“Well. I didn’t want to do this, us being friends and all. And you can’t make too much out of it. I’ll only do it this once. You understand?”Kurt was very aware of where this conversation was headed. And very appreciative.Ten minutes later Kurt and Paula were naked together in the back of a throwback Dodge van in the school parking lot. The vision of Paula’s hairless Cunt had Kurt’s phallus rocketing skyward. He didn’t know that her shaven cunt indicated, to her female friends, a recent sexual encounter.“Wow! You have a big one!” Paula mused, pointing to his lumbering cock. “I don’t think I can take it right off the bat. Can you lick me before you stick me?”Actually, this was a lie. Paula was fully capable of engulfing the big ones on sight. She was already wet. She just wanted some head. What girl doesn’t? Kurt readily agreed. What boy wouldn’t?Paula lay back on the van’s faux shag carpet, opening her legs for Kurt’s consideration. He marveled at her nakedness. Her proportions were perfection itself. Paula’s tits were pink and perky, and they wobbled like peach gelatin, ever so slightly each time she moved. Her abdomen, too, was free of excess, not athletically tight, but very softly feminine. Of course, her navel was an “innie”. There was a freshness about her that contrasted nicely with that glint of lust in her green eyes. Her smile was guileless. She had two rabbit’s teeth that were a bit larger than her others; her lips mimicked the heart shape of her vulva. They were red and sensual without the addition of lipstick. She looked as if she’d been born to suck cock, her mouth a second, more esurient, cunt.Too, she went fully shaven. There were no hints of pubes under her pits or between her thighs, not even a smidgen of stubble. Even her forearms and calves went shorn. And her cunt? Get right outta town. Bald as an egg! Paula had two bubbly labia majora and two luscious pink labia minora guarding the entrance to her canal. Crowned with a fat little pliable clit, her exposed slit would make a dead man cum. She sparkled with gleam. One could eat at her Y for hours and not go unsated. She certainly didn’t have Denise’s soft pelt of curly ebon down between her legs. Kurt had no way of knowing that Paula’s golden carpet had only been recently scraped away. (High school boys are always fascinated by a woman’s pubic mound, hair and all, reasoning that any fifth grade girl can be bald down there. High school girls don’t tend to know this; they shave their pussies according to the most current beauty trends.)Kurt was a huge fan of Denise’s fuzzy pelt though he didn’t mention it much. In fact, it was the silken slide of Denise’s luxuriant twat that usually engendered his ejaculate.Paula’s shaven cunt was nice. Kurt thought he could give her a poke with some measure of restraint. He knelt between her thighs to inhale that first obligatory sniff of paradise. There’s always something about that first sniff. People in long-term relationships know the sniff intimately. It grows on them over time. Like fine wine, it becomes a source of comfort, an opiate, a safe port in a storm. All other things being equal, that first sniff of poonan can keep a couple seething in lust for decades.Too, every cunt in the world has its own unique aroma. At its best, it’s sultry. Sweltering. Alluring. When that aroma tweaks the right olfactory nerves the sex can be amazing. Scent is easily the most powerful of the senses. It’s why jungle cats pee on trees.Paula’s cunt whispered of riotous wildflowers, rhododendrons, fine tawny port, dick, and Lagerfeld cologne. One might easily imagine flocks of hummingbirds hovering manically about her cleft, competing for the privilege to siphon sips of her most intimate Cuntl nectar.Paula smiled up at Kurt lazily. She knew the dizzying effect her cunt bouquet had on men. Having Paula’s radiant cunt before him now, inches from his face, Kurt was appropriately dazzled. In his wildest dreams he’d never thought he’d get the chance at both Paula Fuller and Sharon Minor in the same lifetime, much less the same day.Kurt nudged his nose into her cleft. From this proximity, Paula’s cunt seemed almost magical. He drew a second, more personal, whiff, savoring the flavor. Paula could feel his hot breath coursing breezily over her shaven labia. She always loved that part.Men!But it was also lesson time. Paula got down to brass tacks.“I’m going to let you suck my cunt for a little bit, Okay? I like it. I think you’ll like it, too. It gets me wet for when you go to put your dick in. If you like, I can suck you, too. What’s important is this: You must not cum. I want you to note each time you are ready to cum. Try to find the point where it’s inevitable. Stop just before you get there. Whether it’s in my mouth or my cunt, if you want to get past all this cumming too soon, you have to get used to being inside me. You understand?”“I think so,” Kurt replied. He was already ready to cum.“Don’t 'think so’, Kurt. Know so. Get used to pulling out and starting over. Try to go a little longer and deeper each time. Three pumps. Five pumps. Ten. When you get to the point where you can go a full minute, I’ll show you another technique. What is it that calms you?”“I, I like playing baseball.”“OK, good. When you get going inside me good, think about being on a baseball path. Concentrate on what it takes to steal a base. Watch the pitcher’s move, watch his leg kick. Time the catcher’s throw. If you can concentrate on that while fucking, and do it for ten or fifteen minutes, you’ll have Denise eating out of your hands.”“But, Denise doesn’t care how long I go. She just wants to really feel it when I cum.”“I know, I know. You’ve told me a thousand times. If and when you build up stamina, hold it back and hold it back some more, you’ll build up enough pressure to blast her out of the Universe. Come to think of it, I like it when that happens to me, too!” Paula chortled.“Okay,” he replied.“One last thing, Kurt,” Paula continued, “If you feel Me cumming, you can just go ahead and cum. I’ll usually tell you when I’m about to cum, but if I don’t, and you feel my cunt twitching real fast, that’s the moment. I’ll start humping you really fast and hard. Don’t go soft if that happens. Just go ahead and slam it in there. Deep and hard. I’m a big girl. The harder you hit it, the better I like it. I’m sure Denise likes it like that, too.”“Well, except for the twitching part, we never get that far,” Kurt replied. “I can feel her cunt snapping real tight around my dick, twitching Really tight, as soon as I get it in. And that’s what makes me cum. And the next thing I know we’re waking up all sweaty and wet. We never get around to the 'deep and hard’ stuff.”“Well you can get around to the deep and hard stuff with me,” Paula countered. “Just plow it in there when I start twitching. Go fast, go hard. Even if you cum too soon, we can always try again. We have the whole hour.”Kurt’s erection was becoming painful. He was happy to conclude Paula’s lesson session.“We can start practicing now, if you want,” he commented. “I’m ready.”“Eat my cunt, Kurt,” came Paula’s response. “Don’t get too far ahead of the game.”She rotated her hips to amplify the ethereal effect of her split fragrance. Smiling drunkenly, Kurt went in. Paula hadn’t indicated a preference for a violent oral assault so he began slowly. He sniffed and licked Paula’s pink cunt lovingly as if it were a favored pet cat just home from a three-day bender. She was his ice cream cone, his lollipop. Parting her slit with his tongue tip, bottom to top, Kurt finished with a double clit swirl and a wet, all-too-familiar kiss. Paula roiled. He essayed the move again, this time paying more attention to Paula’s cunt sidewalls and her flower petal-like inner cunt lips. Paula’s scent billowed forth. He kissed her cunt again. Paula shivered her hips opulently, hinting at the existence of another orifice just south, a special orifice, an orifice too in need of special oral attention.Paula’s cunt puckered open. Kurt inserted his tongue, just the tip at first, but soon enough the entirety of it. His upper lip engulfed her clit. Paula moaned. Her hip rotations became increasingly animated, strident. Kurt could sense that his dick was in for a comprehensive shagging if and when he finally got it in. Paula was humping the shit out of his tongue. It was as if she hadn’t had her cunt sucked in days.“Oh! Kurt! Go slower! Softer, damn it! I’m gonna cum!”He hadn’t realized that women sometimes suffer from pre-mature ejaculation, too. He’d only been down there for a couple of moments. Paula was on the verge. She hadn’t lied about letting him know of her progress toward closure.“Go ahead,” he mumbled.“No!” she fairly shrieked. “Not yet!”She pushed his head away from her churning cunt. Kurt could see that her pelvic thrusts were involuntary. Her pelvis jerked upward for want of pole. Paula really was flirting with disaster. As her hip rotations slowed, Kurt could see Paula’s back arching abnormally. She bent her vertebrae almost perpendicular just before unleashing a monstrously quick upward pelvic thrust. It was like watching a slingshot whipping a stone at a squirrel. This was Paula’s orgasmic rage in motion. She’d said she wanted to be slammed at the moment of detonation. And here she was slamming, the air. There was no dick or tongue in her. She wanted to cum, but then again, she didn’t. Paula was showing him the mechanics of restraint.Kurt waited for her breathing to calm.“Did you cum?” he asked.“Almost,” she huffed breathlessly. “You see what I did there? That’s what you have to do.”“If I start whipping my dick around like you just did, I’ll cum. I almost came just from watching you.”It was true. A dollop of pre-cum dripped from his urethra. Paula noticed it.“Yeh, I see. If I suck you now, you’ll be done and gone.”She pulled his head back down between her thighs.“Okay, let’s try this again,” she whispered. “Suck it like you did before. That was good.”They repeated their cunnilingual session, yielding the exact same result. Two minutes in, Paula’s cunt churn became manic, even extreme. The lights and the zoom of the impending maelstrom crazed throughout her body, unleashing scads of cunt scent and anguished moans before Paula pushed him away. She began humping the air fast and quick, like a male dog in heat. Kurt longed to insert himself, and almost did, but held back with a monumental effort. He watched Paula calm. He even scoote

Many managers don't know what to say when a team member appears angry, frustrated, or sad. They might even feel it is unprofessional to acknowledge those feelings at all. But research shows that avoidance is costly. Doctoral student Christina Bradley and professor Lindy Greer, both of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, say teams perform better when their leaders respond effectively to members' emotions. The researchers outline when and how to do that in a way that builds stronger relationships, teams, and organizational culture. Bradley and Greer are coauthors, with Michigan Ross professor Jeffrey Sanchez-Burks, of the HBR article "When Your Employee Feels Angry, Sad, or Dejected."

Show me, O Lord, my life's end, and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure (Psalm 39:4,5). Standing at a bassinet, delighting in new birth, we are often unnerved by how fragile life can be. Struck by the raw beauty of a small baby, we ponder the potential of life, wondering what joys and pains this child will both experience and give. At death, we also find ourselves faced with that frailness, but not with the promise of potential greatest or filled with the fullness of hope. At death, the frailness of life can leave us empty with despair. We cannot be faulted for finding life rather brief, a vapour, a mist, a breath; over too soon; too easily ended. That is where death brings us. We ask deep questions. Who are we? What are we here for? We may deceive ourselves with the busy-ness of life, thinking we are more important than we really are. Our great plans may cause us to think we are indestructible. We reach for the stars. Yet, in all our bustle and activity, we are still mere phantoms. Death makes us realize how little we are, how little control we have over the destiny of our hoarded wealth and ambition. It strips us of our illusions of self sufficiency and immortality. That is David in Psalm 39. He has looked at life and found it wanting. What caused David to number his days? The answer: intense suffering. Extreme pain opened David to a deep work of God in his life. Dejected and depressed, David cried out to God, pouring out his soul about how brief and fragile life is. David could not figure out rationally the circumstances of his life, except that he was not innocent. He admits that some of his pain was God's discipline. But that did not nearly account for all the trouble he saw and experienced. With nothing left for him, he turned to God. In the Lord was a firm hope. Here was a rock. David's lifespan was nothing before God. Yet life itself was empty without God. Life may be frail, but with God there is salvation. God sent his Son to take away the sting of death. Jesus chose to walk the road of suffering and the grave so that we might experience more than the frailty of life. Jesus said he came so that we might have life to the full (John 10:10). “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38). Jesus Christ came to break the bitterness of death. As he said to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26). God shattered the midnight darkness of death by the light of an empty tomb. If there is nothing beyond the sunset and the dark, if death is a sleep from which there is no awakening, if the grave is the end of existence than our pilgrimage here is rather purposeless, intolerably pathetic, with little incentive for goodness. Gloriously, however, something has happened to give us hope. Something has happened. Christ has been raised from the death. Something tremendous has a foothold in this darkened scene that has changed the face of this world. Christ has turned all our sunsets into dawns. When we face our own mortality, we do so with hope. We hope in the resurrection. Jesus was the first, all who believe in him will follow. And while we wait for our own resurrection, we look to Christ's blood for forgiveness for our sins and to his Spirit for the empowerment to keep doing what is right and good, “for our labour in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). While we live on this earth our goal is treasures in heaven, not treasures on earth. As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May your day end with rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you.  May you rest in his provision as he brings night, and then new dawn.

Brienne continues to search for Sansa Stark. None of her leads pan out in Duskendale. But not all is lost, she gets a fancy sigil on her shield. She considers Sansa's possible alternative locations and gets awfully close to the truth. She discovers that a familiar face (to us) is following her. Simon and Jenny wish Brienne would follow her instincts.Chapter Review:Brienne of Tarth arrives in Duskendale; her first official destination on her journey to find Sansa Stark. Her House Lothston shield gives her trouble at the town gate and the guard suggests his sister as an artist to repaint the shield. After dropping the shield off and describing a sigil she'd like to see on it, she makes for the Dun Fort. The lord of the Dun Fort is absent so she is shown to his maester. After reading her letter from King Tommen proving she is on official royal business, the maester reveals she's not the first to ask about Sansa and Dontos Hollard; more like the 21st.The maester breaks it to Brienne that Ser Dontos had little ties to Duskendale, as the rest of his family was wiped out years previously. Dejected, Brienne leaves and returns to the inn to wait on her shield. At the inn, she meets a dwarf holy man who tells her of a fool in Maidenpool with two travel companions. It intrigues Brienne enough to consider it as her next stop. The next morning the shield is delivered to her and exceeds her expectations. Brienne heads north up the coast but realizes she's being followed. She springs a trap on the unwanted company. When she has the man where she wants him, it's revealed that he's Podrick Payne, who was hoping that following Brienne would lead him to Tyrion.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Brienne of Tarth - Charged with rescuing Sansa Stark.Sansa Stark - Eldest surviving Stark child. Nine-year-old Dan Gill arrived with his best friend Archie at their classmate’s birthday party. When the mother of the birthday boy saw Archie, however, she refused him entry. “There aren’t enough chairs,” she insisted. Dan offered to sit on the floor to make room for his friend, who was Black, but the mother said no. Dejected, Dan left their presents with her and returned home with Archie, the sting of his friend’s rejection searing his heart. Now, decades later, Dan is a schoolteacher who keeps one empty chair in his classroom. When students ask why, he explains it’s his reminder to “always have room in the classroom for anyone.” A heart for all people can be seen in Jesus’ welcoming life: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). This invitation may seem to contradict the “first to the Jew” scope of Jesus’ ministry (Romans 1:16). But the gift of salvation is for all people who place their faith in Jesus. “This is true for everyone who believes,” Paul wrote, “no matter who we are” (Romans 3:22 nlt). We rejoice then at Jesus’ invitation to all: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29). For all seeking His rest, His open heart awaits.

Invisible Generals: Rediscovering Family Legacy, and a Quest to Honor America's First Black Generals by Doug Melville https://amzn.to/3SST5e1 The amazing true story of America's first Black generals, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. and Jr., a father and son who helped integrate the American military and created the Tuskegee Airmen. Perfect for fans of Devotion and Hidden Figures. Red Tails, George Lucas's celebration of America's first Black flying squadron, the Tuskegee Airmen, should have been a moment of victory for Doug Melville. He expected to see his great-uncle Benjamin O. Davis Jr.—the squadron's commander—immortalized on-screen for his selfless contributions to America. But as the film rolled, Doug was shocked when he realized that Ben Jr.'s name had been omitted and replaced by the fictional Colonel A. J. Bullard. And Ben's father, Benjamin O. Davis Sr., America's first Black general who helped integrate the military, was left out too. Dejected, Doug looked inward and realized that unless he worked to bring their inspirational story to light, it would remain hidden from the world just as it had been concealed from him. In Invisible Generals, Melville shares his quest to rediscover his family's story across five generations, from post-Civil War America to modern day Asia and Europe. In life, the Davises were denied the recognition and compensation they'd earned, but through his journey, Melville uncovers something greater: that dedication and self-sacrifice can move proverbial mountains—even in a world determined to make you invisible. Invisible Generals recounts the lives of a father and his son who always maintained their belief in the American dream. As the inheritor of their legacy, Melville retraces their steps, advocates for them to receive their long-overdue honors and unlocks the potential we all hold to retrieve powerful family stories lost to the past. About the author DOUG MELVILLE is one of the most innovative voices in corporate diversity. A fifth-generation leader, his family worked with several different presidential administrations. He has been featured in numerous periodicals, including Forbes, USA Today, Time, Business Insider, and the Washington Post, and he has given three TEDx Talks.

As Bold As Lions Podcast

He [Jesus] entered Jericho and was passing through.  And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich.  And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.  So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.  And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”  So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.  Luke 19:1-6With a desperate and broken world, there are many who, like Zacchaeus, will do anything to catch a glimpse of something real, something true.  Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus.  Those in despair around us ultimately need to see Him too, even if they don't recognize that it is Jesus that they are missing.  Today's podcast episode tells us of the need that is there and gives a roadmap of Christian living in these days to maximize our witness.  Many are so close to making a commitment to Christ.  Are we willing to stand in the gap and pray and step out obediently when we are called to share Him?

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

Recording Available Via Telephone Dial: (605) 475-4799 | Access ID: 840886# | Reference #: 2394 If a person is wronged or insulted, he may feel pain and anguish from it. However, if he utilizes the golden opportunity he is being given, he could soar to the greatest heights and capitalize on all of the potential gains awaiting him. The Gemara tells us about some of the wondrous benefits that come to a person who overlooks when he is wronged, including being forgiven for his sins and given extra years of life. The Zohar HaKadosh brings the story of Rabbi Abba who witnessed another man experience great miracles because he always forgave everyone who wronged him. One of the mefarshim explain the way it works. It is the nature of a person to want to take revenge when he is harmed. His initial reaction is usually one of hate. He never wants to look at the person again and surely not befriend him. By overcoming that nature, the person is acting in what is called למעלה מהטבע – above nature. And the midat hadin of Hashem is only able to affect what is in nature. When a person rises above his nature, he is freed from all dinim . No prosecuting angels can speak negatively of him. And thus, he becomes surrounded by Hashem's chesed . Revenge may be sweet, but overcoming our midot will turn out to be so much sweeter in the long run. I read a story about a woman who asked her daughter-in-law to help a week before Pesach with Pesach cleaning. She basically wanted her to throw away all the old things that she didn't use any more, including clothing, and help her organize so that she could have her house in order to clean properly. When the daughter-in-law started, the mother-in-law went out to run some errands. She tackled the job with gusto. At one point she decided to work on her mother-in-law's bedroom closet. She saw some old clothing that had gone out of style decades before. She knew her mother-in-law never wore any of them so she got rid of them. A few hours later, her mother-in-law returned. She looked around the apartment appreciatively, happy to see the progress that her daughter-in-law had made. While looking around, she noticed three old outfits were removed from her closet. Her heart clenched with trepidation. Inside those three outfits, she had been storing her three most valuable pieces of jewelry. She ran out to the dumpster to see if she could find the bag with the old clothing, but the city of Bnei Brak had already stepped up its garbage collecting efforts in view of the upcoming Yom Tov. The dumpsters had already been emptied. Dejected, she climbed the stairs back to her apartment and with each step she took, her anger grew. A few moments before she opened the door, she said to herself, “Yelling at my daughter-in-law won't bring back my jewelry. All it will do is cause a major fight. I'll wait and maybe in a few weeks I'll mention it when I calm down.” Then, before she entered the house, she made a tefila , “ Ribono Shel Olam , only You know how precious that jewelry was to me. You know how a woman feels about jewelry and how hard it is to restrain myself from saying anything now to my daughter-in-law. I still have three precious jewels at home, three adult children, two boys and a girl, who haven't yet merited to find their match. Please, let me rejoice with those jewels finding their zivug .” She then put on a smile and entered the house as if nothing happened. When her daughter-in-law finished cleaning, she thanked her for her help and they parted on good terms. Within two weeks, she received great suggestions for all three of her children and they all became engaged around the same time. After the third engagement took place, the woman said, “For my first child to get married, I said the entire Tehillim every day for 40 days. For my second, I said Perek Shira for 40 days, and for my third, I said Nishmat every day for 40 days. Now HaKadosh Baruch Hu showed me that with a short tefila and a lot of self-control, in a matter of seconds, one can merit marrying off three children.”

As it may be lost in the thick bushes, he announces and plays a provisional ball which lands on the green around 6m from the hole. As the group arrives at the green, Andy announces that he doesn't want to look for his original ball and is declaring it lost. Andy plays his provisional ball to within 1m of the hole, marks and lifts it. Another player sees a ball in the bushes behind the green about 15m from the hole, and it is Andy's original ball. Dejected, Andy picks up the marker on the green and completes the hole with the original ball, scoring 5. Walking to the next tee, the players discuss what just happened and they consult a referee. #509 - Heather Knight Pech: Breaking Records into Her 60's

In this episode we are re-airing one of the best conversations in Rambling Runner history, and for good reason. Heather Knight Pech was once told that her peak was gone. It was in a class she was taking at Stanford 18 months ago. It sparked a deep conversation with her coach, James McKirdy, and her support team. Dejected, she was reminded that there's simply no chart or metric that can measure the power of the human spirit. This past weekend, just a few days before turning 61, Heather ran her second fastest half marathon. 1:27:51. A result that is a World's Best for her age group (60-64) and pending American and World Record (1:28:21). This episode was recorded last spring two weeks after she set the Boston Marathon record in the women's 60-64 age group. A record previously owned by Joan Benoit Samuelson. Below is what Heather's coach and friend James McKirdy wrote after she ran Boston in 2022. It is perfect I've inserted it below: ”If all we did was acknowledge the time on the clock... we'd be giving a standing ovation. If all we did was acknowledge that a record was broken and that the impossible had been accomplished... we'd be celebrating for weeks and then life would move forward as it does. But the reality is that what Heather Knight Pech accomplished in the Boston Marathon is far more than her finish time of 3:03:47. It's far more than winning the division (60-64). And it's certainly far more than breaking the record held by Joan Benoit Samuelson. It's been 3 years since since Heather last finished Boston - a race that lives in her soul. It's been a bit over 1.5 years of injury that left Heather wondering if the best was behind her. But the success Heather found on Monday isn't found in the result... it's the in-between time where the story is truly told. The injury. The heartbreak. The self doubt. The loneliness of not being able to do what she is so clearly meant to. But to know Heather is to know what it means to not give up. To know what it means to demand the very best. To know what it means to love with all that you are. Heather fought her way through this hard time - but she wasn't alone. She found the best doctors for therapy. She found shoulders to lean on with her family and friends. She found inspiration from her athletes while self doubt crept in. She surrounded herself with believers leaving her no choice but to believe in herself. When Heather stepped on the starting line she left all the self doubt behind her. She knew what she could do... she was patient... and she ran the race of her life!” Follow Heather at https://instagram.com/_knighttraining Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by UCAN nutrition which is powered to deliver steady, long lasting energy without the spike and crash. After Jesus healing so many, he looks on the crowds and his heart goes out to them. They have been longing to be cared for but their leaders have left them feeling tired and thrown away. So Jesus looks on them with compassion, which doesn't mean he just feels for them but that he does something about it.
