The newspaper is full of the Adam Selwood tragedy and the Eagles win and the value of a ‘mental health round'. Everyone knows a hashtag or a football round might make us feel a bit better but the issue is way deeper than that. Asking RUOK? is a touch better but way more needs to be done.. Research into what works and what to do when some things don't work.. Answers -- practical, science based, proven strategies Healing stories, not just problem stories. Too many mental health talks are on the problem and the problem stories, and not enough on the stories of transformation and healing.. Topics to teach, train, coach and mentor people of all ages in: Destigmatisation Resilience building Mindfulness training Internal and external ecosystem management Etc etc The recent podcast I did with @Bryn Edwards, where he said ‘this is not a mental health crisis, it's an emotional health crisis' The acknowledgment, expression and processing of emotions' From an NLP point of view - state management.. Dr Peter Symons and his book Brain-Fuel Depletion and the recent seminar I MC'ed with Peter and Dr Clyde Jumeaux plus the many calls and discussions I have had with old mate and long-term mental health researcher and advocate Neil Cole and our great work with BlokesTalk BeachSide and the work with Paul Litwin and Mens Talk AU shows how men in particular need to feel OK about talking to someone about how they feel on the inside.. In a recent conversation with a past client who is involved heavily with Veterans and PTSD.. as he says, 'asking RUOK is not the Question.. asking on a scale of 0 to 10 how are you feeling?' is a far better question.. If you are under 5... let's talk about it.. We go into much further detail in this podcast including the structured Holistic Psychosocial Lifestyle Audit & Action Plan based on Rapoport's lifestyle dimensions—Family, Work, and Leisure—with integrated areas including Emotional Intelligence, Rumination, Stress Load, and Internal Chemistry. This self-assessment helps evaluate key domains influencing mental health and offers tailored recommendations based on the results.. I can't wait for you guys to meet today's guest, Ashley Walls. I heard Ashley share at a Twelve Step Meeting a few months ago and was absolutely blown away. At just 21 years old, her wisdom and self awareness are remarkable. Ashley's father was in prison when she was very young, then got out and was sober for many years. Ashley went with him to meetings and fell in love with the program from the sidelines. After nine years sober, her father's relapsed, sending Ashley spiraling. Consciously deciding to begin using substances, Ashley was strung out on benzos by the time she was 18. An early relationship tragedy led to suicidal ideation and and her first foray into substance abuse treatment. Ashley spent the next few years in and out of treatment and relapsing. Eventually landing at a women's facility in San Diego, there she met Polina White, a friend that would change her life. Through their friendship, Ashley and Polina were able to support each other in early sobriety and both began rebuilding their lives with their newfound friendship as the foundation. Tragically, in September 2021, Polina drowned while swimming at the Corona del Mar beach while Ashley was visiting family in LA. Though devastated, Ashley managed to stay sober through her grief and recently celebrated three years of sobriety. Ashley still credits her friendship with Poline as a cornerstone in her recovery and together with Polina's family, started a scholarship fund in Polina's name. The Polina Fund raises money to send women in need to substance abuse and mental health treatment. Ashley's grasp and insight into the steps, as well as her dedication to service work in recovery, have truly inspired me, and I think she will inspire you too. On a bike ride on an open road in New Jersey in 2011, Ron Gold was struck head-on by an SUV whose driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel even though it was the middle of the day. He barely survived, suffering critical injuries, and was left a paraplegic. It was bad enough the driver was totally unapologetic about causing this tragic event. Ron spent many months in rehab, not to mention wrestling with feelings of despair and hopelessness. After he finally got back home, one thing he learned, which you would likely never find out otherwise, is how challenging it is to find a reliable home health care provider. Ron and I are fellow alumni of the University of Pennsylvania, and leveraging the business acumen he had gleaned both there and in his Wall Street jobs, Ron and his wife Betsy, who had encouraged him to find purpose in his life despite his situation, founded and run LeanOnWe. This organization serves to help pair people in the New York Tri-State area who need home healthcare with screened providers, as well as enable those providers to receive a livable wage, which is often a barrier to many remaining in the profession. LeanOnWe innovatively addresses both of these shortcomings, and has now matched more than 1900 individuals with providers. In the meantime, Ron has charged back in to the athletic world, in both para-rowing, in which he has competed in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, and as a marathoner using a handcycle, where he is roughly horizontal to the ground and “pedals” with his arms. He completed the Hartford Marathon in 2:56, and then improved to 2:42 at the New York City Marathon. Along the way, he has helped the fundraising efforts of Eric LeGrand, the Rutgers football player who was paralyzed in 2010 and is now an inspiring entrepreneur himself. Ron's efforts have helped raise more than $36,000 for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to aid paralysis research and treatment. Ron's story will inspire you how he pushed back against very dark times in his life, found a purpose, and had he not done that, the impacts on others that never would have been possible.Ron GoldLeanOnWe.comrongold@leanonwe.comwww.RonGold.livesubstack.com/@rongoldInstagram and Threads @the_ronniegFacebook and LinkedIn Ron GoldBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast
