Gene McConnell is an ex-john. At one time in his life, he had a porn addiction, was paying for sex regularly (while married), and even attempted to sexually assault a woman. Gene stopped himself, but the near-attempt and consequent arrest forced him down another path, towards dealing with his past trauma and related sex, anger, and emotional issues, as well as towards a life of talking to other men about his past, how he changed his life, and what was at the root of his exploitative behaviour and dehumanizing view of women.Today, he tours college campuses, speaking to young men about pornography and prostitution, is the founder of Authentic Relationships International, is a youth pastor, and is married with three children.Follow me on all socials!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/insidetruecrime/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mattcoxtruecrimeDo you want to be a guest? In this episode, Jason shares a powerful and moving interview with Gene McConnell. Gene dives deeply and vulnerably into the personal impacts of the progression of p****graphy addiction: from feeling out of control, to breaking covenant between God and his wife, a growing fear of intimacy, and the desensitization that led to a nearly catastrophic choice that could have altered the path of his life forever. Gene McConnell is the Founder of Authentic Relationships International. As a former s*x-buyer, Gene is one of America's foremost experts on shame and its impact on one's personal perception that affects all other relationships. His message helps identify and interpret adverse consequences of societal trends that are engulfing our contemporary culture. Gene educates individuals and organizations all over the world about the foundational elements of building and maintaining healthy relationships in marriage, the workplace, and the community.Sadly, the Church is not immune to the devastating effects of p****graphy. But, The most vital role the Church can play is to provide recovery groups and mentoring programs where Christ's love is demonstrated alongside competent addiction recovery principles. Ultimately this leads to deep and ongoing spiritual transformation, which is the real antidote to the insidious progression of p*****graphy addiction.Connect with Gene :https://www.authenticrelationshipsint.comFoundations of Masculinity Small Groups: https://www.smallgroups.braveco.org/Foundations of Masculinity For Your Church: https://www.church.braveco.org/Jason's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayvallotton/CONNECT WITH BRAVECOWebsite: https://www.braveco.org/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/braveco.menInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/braveco.men/Shop: https://shop.braveco.org/ABOUT BRAVECOWe live in a time where men are hunting for the truth and looking for the codebook to manhood. Today's guest is Gene McConnell founder of Authentic Relationships International. Gene has an incredible story to share about God's redeeming power. Sexually assaulted as a child, exposed to pornography at an early age, rejected by his church in his original attempts to heal, and ultimately acting out with buying sex and committing his own attempted act of sexual assault. But God transformed his heart in one simple act of love by a brother in Christ. Today, Gene has 40 years of experience in developing education about pornography's role in the exploitation of men, women and children in our society. He also recently shared his journey in the Exodus Cry documentary Buying Her. “Because of technical difficulties related to increased Internet usage as a result of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, you may notice intermittent instances of audio interference. We sincerely apologize.” The statistics tell the story — pornography is a destroyer. It destroys marriages, families, careers, and reputations. In other words, pornography destroys lives. Christians are not immune to this scourge. And yet pornography remains one of the least-addressed issues in the church today. In one of the most crucial episodes ever produced by the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil ("Omaha") look to Scripture for answers to why pornography is such a problem for so many — including within the church — and how the gospel of Christ can lead to freedom from its unmerciful enslavement. As part of our “Men In the Fight” podcast series and in honor of our 10th episode (whoohoo!) we welcome special guest Gene McConnell, who for nearly 40 years has been speaking on the topic of shame, including its role in the perpetuation of human trafficking and addiction and its impact on one's personal perception that effects all other relationships. On today's podcast, Gene unpacks a vital message about the critical need we all have for intimacy, shedding light on true intimacy versus the illusion of intimacy. He also explains that while shame disavows us of the notion that we are a candidate for love and true intimacy, the way out of addiction is building real intimacy and true connection. This is reflective in the ethos of Gene's organization Authentic Relationships International, which is grounded in teaching individuals to build and maintain healthy relationships in marriage, in the workplace and community. Finally, Gene casts a powerful vision for what he'd like to see in the future, emphasizing the necessary cultural shift that needs to take place. He believes by changing the collective mindset that shames addicts into going underground to consume pornography secretly – we may encourage them to come out boldly and to run towards true intimacy. He imagines that if one individual can be part of the continuation of exploitation, what can one person do who has been redeemed from that life? The practice of blacklisting, shunning, shaming, and ostracizing has been with us for pretty much as long as history itself. In this episode, we'll explore the possible reasons we shame, what modern day shaming looks like, and how shaming impacts our culture. We'll interview Gene McConnell on how shaming impacted his life firsthand. Please see the notes for this show at LeighSloan.com. For more on Gene McConnell, visit authenticrelationshipsint.com.

His message helps identify and interpret adverse consequences of societal trends that are engulfing our contemporary culture. Gene educates individuals and organizations all over the world about the foundational elements of building and maintaining healthy relationships in marriage, the workplace, and the community. Gene’s expertise first came on to the national scene with his signature messages about the sexualization of our culture, and the impact it has on individual lives, relationships, and communities. His proprietary program, The Power of PornTM, broke new ground by demonstrating the link between the root causes of shame, broken relationships, and the consumption of sexual images. When Shame Tripped You Up in Partnership Gene remembers one day coming home from work and his wife being completely silent. She didn’t talk, he would ask questions, but only get 1 or 2 word responses. With her silence and withdraw, it hurt him big time. He immediately assumed she didn’t care and was mad at him. Gene went for a drive and was furious. Find out what big news came up, and how he turned the situation around by listening to the podcast. What is the Best Partnership Advice You Have Ever Received?
