Send us a textHave you ever wondered how once-devoted Christians could renounce their faith? In this episode, we confront the troubling rise of apostasy within the church, spotlighting high-profile cases like Josh Harris and Paul Maxwell. We'll delve into scriptural warnings from 1 Timothy and the parable of the sower, examining how not all who seem committed to Christianity are genuinely saved. By distinguishing between superficial belief and true faith preserved by the Holy Spirit, we aim to equip you with the insight to remain steadfast in your own spiritual journey.False teachings can be deceptive and often have demonic origins, misleading even the most sincere believers. We draw from Jesus' teachings and various biblical passages to discuss the importance of discerning and testing the spirits. Especially in today's media-saturated world, where falsehoods thrive, understanding how to recognize these influences is crucial. Join us as we explore the balance between acknowledging the reality of demonic forces and avoiding obsessive fear, emphasizing the need for vigilance and spiritual discernment. The episode also tackles the extremes of asceticism and legalism, illustrating how severe self-denial can lead to hypocrisy and a false sense of righteousness. From historical figures like Simeon the Stylite to modern-day parallels within and outside Christianity, we examine misguided attempts to achieve holiness through austerity. Through the wisdom of G.K. Chesterton and John Stott, we underscore the importance of enjoying God's gifts with gratitude and stewardship. Let's celebrate the blessings of creation and seek true redemption through Jesus Christ, while avoiding the pitfalls of misplaced moralism and false asceticism.Support the show

Some things can't be seen. If you've listened to our podcast, you know that we've bemoaned the fact that although there was a BBC adaptation of The Caves of Steel, we cannot see it because all known copies of the original tapes have been destroyed. Did you know that there was also a BBC adaptation of The Naked Sun? It came out in the third season of Out Of The Unknown and starred Paul Maxwell as Elijah Bailey and David Collings as R. Daneel. We can't see that either. You'd think that the BBC would have learned its lesson by 1969, but no such luck. All known copies of those tapes have been destroyed as well. And then there's Joseph's friend Andy, our special guest in this episode. He has studiously avoided having a social media presence and so he's something else that can't be seen, online anyway. In The Naked Sun, we learn all about things that can't be seen. Lije wants to see the crime scene and he wants to see the outside and he especially wants to see Gladia but the Solarians are determined that he only view these things. Seeing is not the same as viewing. But sometimes we can hear even if we can't see. That episode of Out Of The Unknown? There's a reconstruction, so the soundtrack must still exist. You can hear that if you can find a copy. You can hear Andy here on the podcast, in his World Wide Web premier. And you can hear about chapters 1 through 6 of The Naked Sun because that's what we're talking about this time. We'll get to that viewing vs. seeing thing and much more! So join us! You've got to hear this!

Dan Thompson, teaching pastor at Crossroad in GR helps us wrestle with what to do when someone walks away.  We talk about the heart of the Father who pines for his lost children, about creating space to wrestle with doubt.  Also, perhaps we can say to the one who's walked away, “I don't believe in that God either.”  And what should our posture be toward those who are committed to never coming back?  Then creating a safe space in our families to wrestle.  Please share if this encourages you!   Last week, Paul Maxwell, a former Desiring God writer and the author of the book The Trauma of Doctrine, has announced he is no longer a Christian.  It shocked a lot of people, and yet, he was only one more who bit the dust in the last couple of years. Since 2019, we have seen quite a few BIG names renounce their faith and basically leave Christianity. These BIG names are just the ones we know about. There are countless people who leave christianity, or churchianity, everyday. George Barna, wrote the book Churchless, which is about the growing trend of people foregoing church attendance. In an article about the book, he wrote: “The Number of Churchless Americans Has Jumped by Nearly One-Third in Just 20 Years." So... how can this be understood, or explained in any way? What causes people to "leave the faith"? Or perhaps they're just leaving... Churchianity? This is what we'll answer in this week's explosive episode! Support this podcast

The truth is, Paul wasn’t just on the podcast, he is our friend. So, today we are addressing the issue of deconversion, and specifically looking at how to deal with it on a relational level. Isn’t deconversion just apostasy? Is there one main reason people wind up leaving the faith? Is it really because of bad theology and superficial youth groups? How should we talk to the deconverted? How should we think of them? We are not getting into Paul’s personal story, or “spilling the tea”—like the kids say. Paul can speak for himself if he wishes. As a father of the faith, he provides guidance, protection and speaks identity into the men and women he mentors as sons and daughters. In our current culture, high profile leaders deconstructing from Christianity has become common place. But many men and women are faithfully serving the church. In this interview, Pastor Anthony talks about what a life of integrity, authenticity and faithful service can look like. Since 2018 he's been the manager trying to bring those fortunes back to Saracen Park. The Field share their ground with the Glasgow Tigers Speedway team. And after a tough start to a covid-hit campaign, we'll hear how Maxi is planning to get them back on their bike when football returns. When exactly that will be is anyone's guess. What happens to a trauma survivor who negatively internalizes the doctrines of Reformed theology? What are the paths forward toward psychological and spiritual healing? In a tour de force interdisciplinary study, The Trauma of Doctrine: New Calvinism, Religious Abuse, and the Experience of God (Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, 2020), Paul Maxwell combines insights from dogmatic theology, psychological modeling, and trauma theory to integrate current traumatology with Calvinist dogma. He presents a unique model to account for the disruptions trauma introduces to the human faculties, and integrates this anthropological model with a psychological mapping of faith on the human imagination. This study deserves the attention of anyone seeking increased clarity in the complex interplay of religion and psychology, and offers intelligent articulation of the struggle trauma survivors might have with maximalist doctrinal beliefs. In this episode, Paul Maxwell and I talk about his work on trauma and reformed theology. He argues that reformed theology conceptually teaches good and true dogma but that the individual experience of this theology among those who have experienced trauma needs to be considered. Maximal control and overly negative views of human nature can affect some people in unhelpful ways. One of the most exciting parts about hosting a podcast like this is that I can learn from those with whom I disagree. Here, that is partially the case. But I learned more about reformed thinking and trauma and was challenged to think self-reflectively. I hope the same thing is true for you too when you hear Paul speak. Paul Maxwell is a theologian from Hyde Park, New York. He has his BA in biblical languages from Moody Bible Institute, his M Div from Westminster Theological Seminary, and his PhD from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, where he studied under Kevin Vanhoozer. Paul is currently a marketing coordinator for a SaaS company in the financial technology sector.

“Because of technical difficulties related to increased Internet usage as a result of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, you may notice intermittent instances of audio interference. Christians are not immune to this scourge. And yet pornography remains one of the least-addressed issues in the church today. In one of the most crucial episodes ever produced by the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil ("Omaha") look to Scripture for answers to why pornography is such a problem for so many — including within the church — and how the gospel of Christ can lead to freedom from its unmerciful enslavement.  "Self-Defense Against Sexual Sin"  -- Sermon by pastor John MacArthur, Grace to You"Guarding Sexual Purity" -- Article by pastor John MacArthur, Grace to You"Pornography: The New Narcotic" -- Morgan Bennett, The Public Discourse"Women and Pornography" -- Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC)"Pornography and Dating" -- Sean Perron and Spencer Harmon, Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC)"Find a Certified Biblical Counselor" -- Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC)"Seven Things to Do After You Look at Porn" -- Paul Maxwell, Desiring God"The Pornographic Seduction" -- Albert Mohler, Ligonier Ministries"The Progression of Pornography Addiction" -- Gene McConnell, Focus on the Family"Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace" -- book by Dr. Heath Lambert"Sexual Detox: A Guide for Guys Who Are Sick of Porn" -- book by Tim Challes Covenant Eyes

We wrap-up our interview with Alex Greenwood about the origins of the John Pilate Mysteries. Today, guest interviewer Brian Hutton probes about Greenwood's actual involvement and brushes with a modern-day tragedy at the small college that eerily parallels the events that inspired the John Pilate Mysteries. Greenwood recounts how his relationship with a former Peru State College president seemingly went from perfect to poisonous in a matter of moments, with little-known details of the man who achieved tremendous success yet was undone by a secret past, unethical behavior, and a final, desperate act. Greenwood also discusses his creative process, how he chooses locales for stories, what he regrets about John Pilate's name, and shares hints of what's next in the series.   Some source material for this discussion derived from "Tragedy at Peru State College: The Murders of William Nicholas and Paul Maxwell" by Nancy Handy Moran in Nebraska History -- Fall 1988.  Other materials gleaned from online reports in the Lincoln Journal Star, Omaha World-Herald and assorted websites. Paul Maxwell on What Missionaries Should Know About Trauma

Everybody is talking about trauma. Our culture is highly concerned with mental health, but a lot of half-baked opinions from pop psychology dominate the conversation. Simultaneously, those within the church are usually the last to show any willingness to address the legitimacy of biblically-informed psychology. For missionaries, the pressures are even greater as they face the stresses of life in a new culture—so how should missionaries think about trauma and the brain? Paul C. Maxwell joins us address how serious, Bible-believing, conservative Christians can should think about trauma, PTSD, and related struggles facing people in ministry. Paul runs TheoFit. Paul earned his B. A. in Biblical Languages from Moody Bible Institute and his M.Div from Westminster Theological Seminary. While in Philadelphia, Paul served at a think tank devoted to integrating psychology and theology, where he was encouraged to research more about trauma as he began to process his own childhood abuse. Paul witnessed in conservative Protestantism a closed posture toward psychology, while at the same time, he saw in the psychological literature a growing obsession and hysteria with the concept of trauma among therapists in particular. Conservative Protestants were too captivated by the concept of moral responsibility to see the real pathological elements of trauma, and psychologists could not explain why or how the traumatized could take moral responsibility for their own recovery. Both opposing camps seemed, to Paul, too ideologically motivated to do meaningful work at the intersection of masculinity, faith, and trauma. Paul earned his Ph.D. in 2018 from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School with a focus on trauma psychology. His doctoral dissertation was The Trauma of Doctrine: A Dogmatic Account of the Effects of Abuse upon the Believer’s Experience of God. Paul was a professor of philosophy for 3 years at Moody and published over 12 peer-reviewed articles and reviews in journals such as Journal of Psychology & Theology, Journal of Spirituality in Mental Health, Journal of Spiritual Formation & Soul Care, Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies, Philo, Westminster Theological Journal, and Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society. After finishing his final year of doctoral research, Paul moved to Noblesville, IN, with his wife Molly. He is currently a personal trainer in the Indianapolis area. Paul has also consulted with university administrations to improve their level of mental health care for students. Follow him on Twitter. Remember to share, rate, leave a review, and subscribe. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! On this holiday episode of Doctrine and Devotion the guys talk through how to best handle criticism. As Christians we will face criticism from outside and inside the church. As leaders we sign up for it. But how do we receive criticism without becoming defensive, and perhaps missing something we need to hear? Joe and Jimmy offer 7 steps to receiving criticism to help you benefit from the feedback. Seven Steps to Receiving Criticism 1. Be quick to hear 2. Be slow to speak 3. Be slow to become angry 4. Be Calm, and Gentle 5. Be Ready to Repent 6. Be Ready to Rebuke 7. Be Secure in Christ And be sure to check out Paul Maxwell’s take on handling a certain kind of critic. What is your coaching philosophy How many athletes do you coach? Were you self-taught or did you learn from various sources? What got you into strength sports? Where did your lifting journey start? What was your inspiration or mentor in strength sports? Any injuries that you had to deal with? What do you take on a regular basis to supplement your training? Favorite training music? What now do you want to do strength wise? What is one thing you have heard many lifters say that is WRONG/MYTH?

The guys have Dr. Paul Maxwell in to talk about his perspective on masculinity. This conversation not only shows how complicated the issue of masculinity is, but also provides a helpful way to think through it in some fresh ways. Why is masculinity and femininity so controversial? Can we differentiate between the two in meaningful ways? This is deep stuff, so be sure to read his article or watch his video on The Crisis of Masculinity in a Postmodern Age. Go deep with Paul at his website, Selfwire, where Paul engages modern intellectual issues from a conservative Christian perspective. Be sure to subscribe to the Selfwire Podcast and his Youtube channel. You can also get fit with Paul at the Theofit website and podcast. And while you’re at it, check out Paul’s book, Pious Irreverence, published under his weird pseudonym, “Dov Weiss.” SPONSOR Trace the Themes is a free Bible study by pastor Spence Shelton that will help you trace the themes of Scripture as they unfold from Genesis to Revelation. If listening online, please scroll to the bottom of this entry for the player. You asked for it. We delivered. One of the most commonly asked for additions to the podcast line up is: "Can we hear from other Pirate Monks?" Today on the podcast, we sit down with two Samson brothers who have never met Nate. Paul Maxwell (@paulcmaxwell) is a PhD student at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and philosophy professor at Moody Bible Institute. He writes more at his blog, and pretends to like coffee. Paul wrote the article "Seven Things to Do After Watching Pornography" for Desiring God and included a shout out to Samson Society. He was first invited to Samson Society by his friend Ryan Gibson. Ryan started his professional life in ministry as a youth minister. He received an undergrad in theology and pursued an MDiv at Westminster Seminary where he met Paul Maxwell. He didn't complete his MDiv, instead pursuing a new career in web development and has been doing that for the past five years. He has done a lot of traveling since then, starting or joining Samson Society groups in each new location. He's currently living in Fishers, Ind. with his wife and two kids. He is currently meeting with other brothers in the local Fishers Samson Society group which meets at Christ's Community Church on the corner of 131st and Allisonville Rd. Most importantly, though, is that he's a diehard Cubs fan and doesn't miss a game. We'd love to hear from you. Please take a few minutes and answer questions on our listener survey. You'll be entered for a drawing for a free, autographed copy of Nate Larkin's book, Samson and the Pirate Monks.
