Professor Jon Jureidini is a child psychiatrist who leads the Critical and Ethical Mental Health research group at Adelaide University in Australia. His forensic deconstruction of industry-sponsored clinical trials has exposed how pharmaceutical companies manipulate data, employ ghostwriters, and cultivate academic figureheads to create an illusion of scientific consensus around their products. Prof. Jureidini has revealed how medications prescribed to our most vulnerable populations—children and adolescents—gained approval based on studies that were fundamentally misrepresented in the scientific literature. In his groundbreaking book, 'The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine: Exposing the crisis of credibility in clinical research,' co-authored with Leemon McHenry, he systematically demonstrates how commercial interests have hijacked the evidence base that clinicians rely on, compromising patient care in the process. His work raises profound questions about the integrity of published research and challenges us to reconsider the foundations of modern medicine. Jureidini reveals shocking findings about the landmark 'Treatment of Adolescent Depression Study (TADS) study that's been used to justify prescribing antidepressants to teenagers—despite evidence showing a five-fold increase in suicidal events. With nearly 20% of adolescent girls now taking SSRIs, this conversation exposes the profit-driven deception that puts millions of developing brains at risk while pharmaceutical companies continue to thrive on what Jureidini calls "the illusion of evidence-based medicineChapters00:00 Introduction to the Crisis in Psychiatry02:20 The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine04:34 The TADS Study: A Closer Look10:47 Evaluating the TADS Study's Findings14:22 The Ethics of Informed Consent26:28 Risks and Alternatives in Treatment32:59 The Controversy of Antidepressant Prescriptions35:46 Ethical Concerns in Pharmaceutical Practices40:29 The Impact of Clinical Trials on Drug Approval47:08 Challenges in Psychiatric Research and Publication50:29 Restoring Trust in Scientific Integrity58:20 A Shift Towards Social Determinants of Mental Health RADICALLY GENUINE PODCASTDr. Roger McFillin / Radically Genuine WebsiteYouTube @RadicallyGenuineDr. Roger McFillin (@DrMcFillin) / XSubstack | Radically Genuine | Dr. Roger McFillinInstagram @radicallygenuineContact Radically GenuineConscious Clinician CollectivePLEASE SUPPORT OUR PARTNERS15% Off Pure Spectrum CBD (Code: RadicallyGenuine)10% off Lovetuner click here—-----------FREE DOWNLOAD! SEND US A MESSAGE! We'd Love to Chat With you and Hear your thoughts! We'll read them on the next episode. This is an earlier conversation with Monique Duson and Kevin Briggins of the Center for Biblical Unity and Offcode Podcast. We discuss a relatively recent article in Christianity Today written by Justin Giboney of the AndCampaign. It seems that there is some revising going on when we reflect on the last 10 years and the social justice movement that swept across churches in the United States. The Black Lives Matter movement and critical theory have both been proven toxic. We discuss exactly how we can know that. Link to Woke Preacher ArticleIn the second half of the show, the trio react to Eric Mason's recent statements about the presence of the prosperity Gospel in the black church.LINK TO THE THREADSupport the showPlease Rate & Comment!Hosts: Brandon and Daren SmithWebsite: www.blackandblurred.comPatreon: www.patreon.com/blackandblurredPaypal: https://paypal.me/blackandblurredYouTube: Black and Blurred PodcastIG: @BlackandBlurredPodcastX: @Blurred_Podcast

Beowulf is the product of a profoundly religious imagination, but the significance of the poem's Christianity has been downplayed or denied altogether. The Word-Hoard Beowulf: A Translation with Commentary (Angelico Press, 2023) is the first translation and popular commentary to take seriously the religious dimension of this venerable text. While generations of students know that Beowulf represents a confluence of Christianity and paganism, this version—informed by J. R. R. Tolkien's theory of language as the repository of myth—opens the hood to track the poem's inner religious workings. It brings to light the essential Old English vocabulary, incorporating into the translation the divine titles used for God, specific names for evil and nonhuman creatures, and the precise language employed for providence and fate, along with terminology for kinship and heroism. Such features are not found in any other modern English translation, including Tolkien's, whose text was never intended for publication. The Word-Hoard Beowulf draws upon Tolkien's ideas and commentaries, however, to render a poem whose metaphysical vision takes front and center, delivering a richly restorative version of this early medieval masterpiece. The text is preceded by an introduction detailing the poem's religious motivations and cultural context, and is accompanied by an expansive commentary. In short, this version allows readers to perceive precisely how in Beowulf (as Tolkien puts it) “the new Scripture and the old tradition touched and ignited” to produce the earliest English epic. Peter Ramey is Associate Professor of English at Northern State University, where he teaches courses on medieval English literature, Latin, and linguistics. He has published articles on Beowulf and on Old and Middle English in Modern Philology, Philological Quarterly, and other scholarly journals, while also writing for a broader audience in his essays in Public Discourse and Front Porch Republic. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. The author of Creating Flannery O'Connor: Her Critics, Her Publishers, Her Readers, he teaches research and writing at Rutgers and co-hosts the podcast Fifteen-Minute Film Fanatics, found here on the New Books Network and on X. In today's episode, I spoke with Katy Faust, founder and president of Them Before Us, a global movement defending children's right to their mother and father. She's also the author of three books: "Them Before Us," "Raising Conservative Kids in a Woke City," and "Pro-Child Politics."I began by sharing my personal perspective as a stepparent, acknowledging that while my own family structure isn't ideal from the perspective of children's rights, it's important that we can discuss what's best for children without adults becoming defensive. I expressed how Katy's work resonates with me despite sometimes being difficult to hear, as it challenges us to put children's needs before adult desires. We explored Katy's concept of natural rights, which she explained through three key criteria: they must exist pre-government, nobody has to provide them, and they're distributed equally. She made a compelling case for how conservative values address the root causes of issues that liberals care about, demonstrating how family breakdown underlies many social problems like teen homelessness, incarceration rates, and suicide.A significant portion of our conversation focused on Katy's approach to raising children with strong values in challenging environments. She outlined three developmental phases - grammar, logic, and rhetoric - and explained how parents should adjust their approach during each phase. The grammar phase (elementary school) focuses on exposing children to truth and beauty while filtering out harmful content. The logic phase (middle school) involves purposefully introducing and discussing societal distortions. The rhetoric phase (high school) emphasizes emotional connection over teaching. We discussed practical strategies for parents who may have missed earlier opportunities to lay foundational worldview groundwork with their children. Katy stressed the importance of maximizing emotional connection through physical proximity and becoming knowledgeable about issues their children care about, rather than trying to force ideological discussions. The conversation concluded with insights about how parents can handle their fears about raising children with conservative values in progressive environments, and the importance of what Katy calls the "slow worldview handoff" - a four-step process of teaching children that moves from "I do, you watch" to "you do, I watch.”Katy Faust is Founder and President of Them Before Us, a global movement defending children's right to their mother and father, and author of the book by the same name. She publishes, speaks and testifies widely on why marriage and family are matters of justice for children. Her articles have appeared in Newsweek, USA Today, The Federalist, Public Discourse, WORLD Magazine, The Daily Signal, the Washington Examiner, the American Mind, and the American Conservative. She is on the advisory board for the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship. Katy helped design the teen edition of CanaVox which studies sex, marriage and relationships from a natural law perspective. This episode features two seniors with a variety of experiences in the art of deliberation, Andrew Dever '25 and Jacob Weber '25, discussing their Moot Court records, the Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse initiative, and traveling to Athens to participate in a forum on democracy (Episode 375).
In this conversation, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse and Dr. Deborah Savage discuss the Catholic Church's teachings on contraception, the importance of lived experience in understanding these teachings, and the challenges posed by the sexual revolution. They explore the philosophical foundations laid by John Paul II, the distinction between human acts and impulses, and the implications for sexual morality and human dignity. Dr. Deborah Savage joined the Theology faculty during the 2021-22 academic year, having taught both philosophy and theology at the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota for the previous thirteen years. She received her doctorate in Religious Studies from Marquette University in 2005; her degree is in both theology and philosophy. Dr. Savage is the co-founder and acting director of the Siena Symposium for Women, Family, and Culture, an interdisciplinary think tank, organized to respond to John Paul II's call for a new and explicitly Christian feminism. Her writing has appeared in several publications, Nova et Vertera, Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, First Things, The Humanum Review, Catholic World Report, and Public Discourse. Some recent publications include “Redeeming Woman: A Catholic Response to the Second Sex Issue,” published in the journal Religions and “The Therapeutic and Pastoral Implications of Pope St. John Paul II's Account of the Person,” published in The Journal of Christian Bioethics. The most recent iteration of her theory of Man and Woman is a chapter in a volume entitled The Complementarity of Men and Women, edited by Dr. Paul Vitz and published by CUA Press (May 2021). She is currently at work on a book entitled “Woman and Man” for formal consideration by Catholic University of America Press. Dr. Savage is a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology and the American Catholic Philosophical Association. Episode Summary: In this episode of the #SiblingsToo Podcast, host Nancy Morris talks with Dr. Peter Yates and Amy Adams about their scoping review on sibling sexual abuse (SSA), a critical step in consolidating fragmented research on this under-explored issue. By mapping the current knowledge base, their work identifies gaps in research, clarifies definitions, and lays the groundwork for improved understanding and future studies, making it an invaluable resource for addressing SSA more effectively. Dr. Yates and Amy Adams discuss the complexities of defining SSA, revealing 27 different definitions in the literature and stressing the importance of clear, consistent language to avoid stigma and misinterpretation. They also examine prevalence rates, with adult disclosures ranging from 1.6% to 7%, highlighting the urgent need for increased societal awareness and targeted research. The conversation underscores the limitations of existing studies and calls for more rigorous approaches to fully understand SSA's onset, patterns, and long-term impacts. About the Guest(s): Dr. Peter Yates: Dr. Peter Yates is a lecturer in social work at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. With a background in working in a specialist service assisting children and young people exhibiting harmful sexual behavior, Dr. Yates has dedicated his research to studying sibling sexual abuse, primarily focusing on cases involving boys abusing their siblings. Amy Adams: Amy Adams is a doctoral researcher at the University of Birmingham, centered on family and sibling dynamics. Her current research delves into the relationships between siblings where one child has caused harm and another has been harmed, providing insight into the complex dynamics within such families. Key Takeaways: Definition Complexity: The myriad definitions of sibling sexual abuse contribute to challenges in research and interventions, highlighting the need for a universal understanding to improve clarity and response. Prevalence Insights: Existing research reveals significant rates of SSA disclosure in adulthood, underscoring the need for societal acknowledgment and systemic approaches to dealing with such cases. Family Dynamics: The conversation delves into the factors correlating with SSA, emphasizing that it transcends socio-economic boundaries and often correlates with wider family disruptions. Need for Comprehensive Research: The episode stresses the importance of conducting more in-depth studies, including longitudinal research to establish causal pathways and effective interventions. Education and Intervention: Dr. Yates and Adams advocate for educational efforts starting early in childhood to prevent SSA, aiming for holistic family interventions tailored to support every family member affected by SSA. Notable Quotes: "Because it's such a difficult concept to pin down… what we don't want to be doing is stigmatizing children and children's sexual behaviors unnecessarily." - Dr. Peter Yates "In terms of disclosure, most disclosures come in adulthood, not from children at the time of the incident." - Amy Adams "The idea that some people can touch children's bodies… can include and name specifically brothers and sisters." - Dr. Peter Yates "Sibling sexual abuse can take place in any families from across the socio-economic spectrum." - Dr. Peter Yates "We need more robust and stronger methodologies to make causal or pathway links." - Amy Adams Resources: Glasgow Caledonian University University of Birmingham SiblingsToo Podcast: Website AIM Project (Manchester) Chapters: 0:00 Sibling Sexual Abuse: Understanding, Disclosure, and Stigma 2:55 Exploring Research Gaps in Sibling Sexual Abuse Studies 9:24 Challenges in Defining Sibling Sexual Abuse and Its Implications 18:00 Defining Sibling Sexual Abuse and Its Research Implications 22:33 Reevaluating Sibling Sexual Abuse and Its Traumatic Impact 25:28 Challenges in Managing Sibling Relationships After Harm 27:30 Understanding Sibling Sexual Abuse and Societal Challenges 31:11 Prevalence and Research on Sibling Sexual Abuse 33:41 Understanding the Impact of Sibling Sexual Abuse 39:22 Understanding Sibling Sexual Abuse Across Diverse Family Dynamics 45:09 Addressing Gaps in Sibling Sexual Abuse Research and Prevention 51:04 Challenges in Disclosing Sibling Sexual Abuse Within Families 56:39 Challenges of Disclosure in Adulthood for Childhood Trauma Survivors 58:52 Risks and Rewards of Sharing Personal Struggles 1:00:15 Understanding Non-Verbal Disclosures of Child Sexual Abuse 1:02:26 Early Education and Prevention of Sibling Sexual Abuse 1:05:45 The Challenge of Establishing Clear and Consistent Definitions 1:07:29 Defining and Understanding Sibling Sexual Behaviors and Abuses 1:11:27 Global Research Gaps in Sibling Sexual Abuse Studies 1:16:29 Exploring Whole Family Interventions for Sibling Sexual Abuse 1:21:28 Family Education as a Tool for Abuse Prevention 1:24:39 Addressing Sibling Sexual Abuse Through Broader Societal Responsibility 1:27:11 Increasing Research and Public Discourse on Sibling Sexual Abuse 1:34:57 Scoping Review on Sibling Sexual Abuse: Methodology and Future Directions 1:38:29 Sharing Open Access Research on the SiblingsToo Podcast

Doctors Ayesha and Dean Sherzai founded the Healthy Minds Initiative (HMI) to scale their impact on the tragic epidemic of dementia plaguing the world today. The first thing that we have to understand is that the majority of dementias are preventable through diet and lifestyle. The Sherzai's acronym NEURO—nutrition, exercise, unwinding, restorative sleep, and optimization—encapsulates the pillars that can determine our cognitive trajectory as we age. Second, individual behavior change is hard. And it's especially hard when the community norms are unhealthy.Third, traditionally underserved and marginalized communities are bearing the brunt of the damage and ensuing tragic consequences. And fourth, circling around, those communities can actually become leaders in the public health crusade against toxic lifestyles, since their empowerment can become the solution. HMI exists to empower communities to spread both the message and practice of lifestyle medicine. But in order to do that, the Sherzai's and their partners can't come in as experts. Instead, they approach as curious partners, willing to learn, and willing to stick around and provide support for the long term, and not just until the latest research grant runs out. In our conversation, we talk about the need for systemic change in research models that prioritize community engagement and sustainability. And we talk about what sustainable progress looks like, and can look like—in other words, a blueprint for community engagement and empowerment that can create a grassroots, decentralized, democratic health movement.LinksThe Healthy Minds InitiativeThe Brain DocsNourishing Our Brains and Preventing Dementia with Ayesha Sherzai, MD: PYP 279The Role of Science in Public Discourse and Racial Justice: Dean and Ayesha Sherzai, MDs: PYP 414The Alzheimer's Solution, by Drs Ayesha and Dean SherzaiThe 30-Day Alzheimer's Solution: The Definitive Food and Lifestyle Guide to Preventing Cognitive Decline, by Drs Ayesha and Dean Sherzai

Why do universities require students to take classes in the humanities during their first few years? Dr. David Horner, who has taught these classes for many years, helps us see the wisdom of requiring these courses, in light of the value they bring to the student who takes them seriously. Dave earned his master's and doctoral degrees in philosophy at Oxford University, is a professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, and is the author of (among other books) the popular Mind Your Faith: A Student's Guide to Thinking and Living Well. In this podcast we discuss: How Dave got interested in studying the humanities How apologetics (defenses of the faith) helped him overcome a crisis of faith in college What the “humanities” are and how they relate to humans, being “humane,” and being a “humanist” Understanding a “College of Liberal Arts,” what a “liberal education” is, and how this relates to the humanities The structure of classical education, on which the “core curriculum” was historically based, and on which contemporary classical Christian education is based The interesting “border-line” cases of law and psychology How the “arts” and the “sciences” differ (it's not what most people think) Why students should be required to take core courses in the humanities The importance, in all fields, of learning to make good distinctions How to discern whether or not a specific humanities course is worth taking The connections between the humanities and wisdom An argument against the humanities--“They are so “impractical!” The critical distinction between “ends” and “means” in evaluating the value of the humanities The valuable role of the humanities in providing us with “cultural literacy” Why Christians should study non-Christians in literature, philosophy, and the other humanities Other practical benefits of studying the humanities, according to the CEO of a major corporation How to get the most out of your core curriculum courses The role a healthy campus ministry can play in your studies Why you shouldn't just learn about the humanities, but rather learn to engage in the humanities Resources mentioned during our conversation: David Horner, Mind Your Faith: A Student's Guide to Thinking and Living Well Stan Wallace, Have We Lost Our Minds? You may have heard the term ex-vangelical. An ex-vangelical is someone who formerly identified as an evangelical, but no longer does so. The phenomenon has created a sub-genre of books from memoirs – such as those by Josh Harris, Rachel Held Evans, and others -- to more journalistic accounts, such as Sarah McCammon's “The Ex-Vangelicals.” But is there really a groundswell of people leaving evangelicalism? Are these books fair representations of evangelicalism? Is the rejection of the ex-vangelicals really a rejection of Christianity, or a rejection of a certain brand of evangelicalism defined more by culture and politics than theology? These are questions Miles Smith set out to answer. He read many of the ex-vangelical books and wrote a helpful article about it called “Reading The Exvangelicals” for Mere Orthodoxy. Miles Smith is a historian by training. He attended university at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, and got a Ph.D. from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. He now teaches at Hillsdale College. But he has come on strong in recent years as a public intellectual. I have found his commentaries helpful and highly readable. In addition to Mere Orthodoxy, he has written for The Gospel Coalition, Public Discourse, The Federalist, and The University Bookman. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. We get database, editorial, and other support from Christina Darnell, Kim Roberts, Casey Suddeth, and Stephen Dubarry. Please join me on Friday for our round up of the week's news, with my co-host Natasha Cowden. Until then, may God bless you.

ICYMI... What does it mean to be a conservative? What about being a Christian? What does that mean in terms of how one would understand and uphold virtue vs vice? And if I am truly a conservative and a Christian, can I then support Donald Trump? We're on Patreon! Join the community: https://www.patreon.com/politicsandreligion It would mean so much if you could leave us a review: https://ratethispodcast.com/goodfaithpolitics In this edition, we explore the nuances of conservative values and Christian beliefs amidst our politically charged environment. To get clarity on what it means to be a conservative and a Christian, it requires NOT surrendering to the extremists who monopolize conversations around politics and religion. Our discussion dives into the foundational principles of conservatism, such as: Individual Freedom, Limited Government, Rule of Law, Peace through Strength, Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets, and *Human Dignity, ...contrasting these with the divisive and aggressive tactics often employed in Trump-era politics. Contrary to what passes for “conservative” in today's political and media landscape, we'll look at the way true conservatism respects the U.S. Constitution and promotes a healthy, engaged citizenry, devoid of blanket vilification via broad generalizations and dehumanization. We'll also give a sneak peak into Part II of this discussion on Christian values, specifically targeting the misalignment of Trump's actions with biblical teachings. So, yeah, this one might tweak some beaks! 02:49 The Impact of Extremism on Public Discourse; 13:40 Exploring the True Meaning of Conservatism; 14:16 Principles of Conservatism vs. Trumpism; 27:29 The Importance of Human Dignity in Conservatism; 34:35 Teaser for the Next Episode: Christianity vs Trumpism Let us know what you think.
