John MacArthur. Charlie Kirk. Voddie Baucham… and so many more. We may not have known them personally, but we feel that a light to the world has been extinguished, and the world is a little bit darker now that we've lost them. How do we deal with the grief and mourning we feel even after […]

The Scripture, in my view, opposes his opening remarks. But the fascinating thing is how he comes back around to personal choices to live with love, humility, obedience, and perseverance. This can be a good starting place when talking with Calvinist friends.MacArthur: If I could lose my salvation?I would.Right? If I could, I would, because I don't have the power to hold it.How can we have assurance that we are saved?Well, you can eliminate one thing for certain that can take your assurance, and that is the idea that you could lose your salvation. That's a lot.Salvation is forever.Salvation is eternal. There's nothing that can separate you from the love of Christ.Jesus said in John 6, the gift of you will come to me, and I will lose none of them, but raise them at the last day.Salvation is forever. So if you are saved, it's forever. That faith cannot fail because that faith is not your faith, that's a gift of God who's given it to you if hes to .So you eliminate that if you get your theology, right, that salvation is forever. So all you want to know is, is my salvation forever. And here's how you know.I think there are three tests and then a forthcoming.Test number one is, what do you love? What do you love?If any man is in Christ, he's a new creation, old things pass away, new things come. What are these new things?I like to think of them as new affections. So the first mark of a believer. It's not perfect, but it's evident love. What do you love? You love the Lord? You love His Word. You, you don't love him like you should, and he used to be increased. You don't love the word like you should, but you love those things. You love the people of God.You want to be with his people, you want to be in the church, you want to be a part of the worshiping group. So, love is the first evidence of a transformed heart. The second one is humility. There's a sense in which you are aware of your sinfulness, and you never really get over this incredible grace that's been given to you to save you.The third one is obedience. It's not perfect obedience, but it's a longing in your heart to obey the Lord. You do acknowledge him as Lord.Do you want to obey.So love, humility, and obedience. And then the fourth thing is this, it's trials, it's what can your faith survive? You know, people who say, well, I believe in the Lord, and something goes wrong in their life, and they walk out.Well, that's not a saving faith. That's not a faith that's a gift from God , because that lasts.
How do you want to be remembered? What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind? I have been thinking about this a lot lately, especially considering what happened in our country with the assassination of Charlie Kirk. But also, because I lost my dad recently. In addition to that, many great Christian leaders have passed away in recent months like Dr. James Dobson, John MacArthur, Kay Arthur, and Phil Robertson. Heaven has never seemed closer in the last couple months, and I have been reflecting on the end of our lives and how do we finish well. This makes me think of a Bible character, Moses. Some think he did not finish well, but I disagree. I am excited to do a Bible Shoes episode on the podcast again and dive deeper into Moses' life and how I believe he finished well. I reference Lisa Appelo's Instagram account and her words of wisdom on grief. She is a friend who sadly lost her husband and encourages widows. She has lots to share on how public grief can affect private grief. Here is direct link to the post I read in this episode. This week, we pause to reflect on the powerful lives of faithful leaders who have recently gone home to be with the Lord—Voddie Baucham, Charlie Kirk, John MacArthur, Phil Robertson, and James Dobson. Their bold witness reminds us that even in seasons of loss and hardship, God is still at work drawing people to Himself. In John 16:25-33, Jesus tells His disciples plainly that trouble is coming—but He also gives them the promise of peace: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” In this message, we look at: The assurance of direct access to the Father through Jesus Christ The reality of trials, persecution, and cultural opposition to the gospel Why fearing God more than man gives us courage to stand firm How to welcome and disciple those God is bringing into His family right now If you've been wrestling with fear, pressure, or uncertainty, this message is for you. Jesus is our peace in the storm, and He has already overcome the world.
The church in every generation has witnessed the silencing of bold gospel voices in death, yet the eternal God and His eternal word endures. In the last two months God has called to his nearer presence men who have been instruments in His hand for the bold proclamation of His truth: John MacArthur, James Dobson, Charlie Kirk, Voddie Baucham."Moses my servant is dead." What now? We mourn. We remember. We are resolute.
Today in Current Events from a Christian Perspective:This year, in rapid succession, we have lost John MacArthur, James Dobson, Charlie Kirk and Voddie Baucham. We know they are all with Jesus, but for us on earth, this is a heavy blow. Yet, I have seen more Jesus preached, services attended, and gospel proclaimed in person and online than I ever have in my entire life. And that is saying something. We are mourning down here for our lost brothers, but heaven in rejoicing, AND, God is moving in the hearts and minds of this generation. "The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9All this and more today on CHURCH PUBLIC..---At Church Public we create compelling content to equip you to follow Jesus and engage in the public square including Current Events from a Christian Perspective. Thanks for watching! Send us a text"Let them return to you, but don't you return to them." These powerful words from Jeremiah 15:19 form the cornerstone of a profound message about standing firm in biblical truth without compromise. When followers drift away, our natural instinct may be to chase after them, diluting the message to make it more palatable. Yet God's instruction to Jeremiah was crystal clear – stand unwavering in truth and let others return to you. This principle was embodied by faithful teachers like Voddie Baucham, John MacArthur, and R.C. Sproul – giants of the faith who never compromised biblical teaching to gain popularity or approval. Their lives demonstrate that standing firm might mean standing alone, but preserving truth ultimately matters more than gathering crowds. The temptation to compromise is especially strong when we desperately want to see loved ones embrace faith, but God's instruction remains clear – we must maintain unwavering commitment to His Word.Scripture tells us that "precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." This preciousness comes through a process similar to refining jewels – requiring pressure to reach their most valuable state. Just as diamonds need tremendous pressure to form, believers are made precious through tribulation. We are God's treasure, His peculiar possession, the pearl of great price that Christ gave everything to purchase. With influential voices for biblical truth passing from this world, we face a critical question: Who will fill the void left by these uncompromising teachers? Being a Christian is both the most difficult and loneliest vocation anyone can have, not for the faint of heart. The challenge before us is clear – will we count the cost and stand firm in uncompromising faith, even if it means standing alone? The Balance of GrayFaith That Challenges. Conversations that Matter. Send us a textThe light of another spiritual giant has been extinguished with the passing of Vodi Bachman, leaving the Christian world a darker place. This heartfelt tribute explores the profound impact of losing such a faithful witness for biblical truth, particularly in the wake of other significant losses like John MacArthur and R.C. Sproul in recent years.Vodi Bachman's life story resonates with particular power – a Black man from South Central Los Angeles, raised by a single mother without spiritual guidance, who became a fearless proclaimer of doctrinal truth often rejected in his own community. His background mirrors that of many who have yet to embrace the sound biblical teaching he championed. The similarities between his journey and others who might follow his path highlight the vacuum his departure creates. What makes the death of saints like Vodi "precious in the sight of the Lord" (Psalm 116:15)? Like rare jewels, faithful teachers of God's Word possess extraordinary value precisely because they are so scarce. They sacrifice personal comfort to proclaim truth without corruption, standing firm even when it means standing alone. As Vodi himself reminded us before his passing, we shouldn't believe the "rumor" of his death – he hasn't died but gone home to the Lord he served so faithfully. The challenge now falls to those who remain. Will we be moved to action for merely a day or two before returning to spiritual complacency? Or will new voices rise to fill the vacuum left by these spiritual giants? The stars are falling from the sky, but their light can continue to shine through those willing to take up their mantle. The question isn't whether Vodi was taken too soon – his race was complete. The question is: who among us will answer the call to stand for truth with the same unwavering conviction? The Balance of GrayFaith That Challenges. Conversations that Matter. Laughs included. Send us a textDeath seems like the ultimate loss, yet Scripture tells us "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints" (Psalm 116:15). This meditation explores the profound theological truth behind this statement through the lens of recent losses in the Christian community—faithful preachers like Vodi Bacham, R.C. Sproul, and John MacArthur. When a saint dies, something precious happens in God's sight. Like a divine connoisseur who recognizes the value of rare jewels, God places extraordinary worth on those He has chosen. The world may not understand their value, but the Lord does, because He alone determines what is truly valuable. These men were jewels in His crown, selected before the foundation of the world to be His.What makes death precious to God? For believers, death brings not separation from God, but closer communion. While their bodies rest, their souls experience uninterrupted fellowship with Christ, awaiting the glorious resurrection day when soul and body will reunite. This eternal perspective transforms how we understand the passing of faithful servants.Vodi Bacham exemplified what it means to be a faithful servant who "takes forth the precious from the vile" (Jeremiah 15:19). In a Christian landscape filled with compromise, he stood firmly for truth without wavering. He taught the doctrines of grace without apology and maintained doctrinal integrity without flinching. His legacy challenges us to follow this same path of uncompromising commitment to God's Word. Before his passing, Vodi reportedly said, "You're going to hear a rumor about my death, but don't believe it." He understood what saints throughout the ages have known—that for believers, death is not the end but a transition to glory. Who will fill the vacuum left by these faithful preachers? Will you stand firmly for truth in a generation that prefers comfortable compromise?Subscribe to hear more challenging messages that call believers to unwavering faithfulness in an age of theological weakness. The Balance of GrayFaith That Challenges. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”14 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God's sight.4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. In Matthew 5:4, "John MacArthur's Study Bible explains that "Blessed are those who mourn" refers to two kinds of sorrow: sorrow over the tragedy of life and, more importantly, deep sorrow over one's own sin. This spiritual mourning, distinct from worldly grief, leads to true comfort from God, a comfort that brings lasting happiness and satisfaction in the kingdom of God.5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."Blessed are the meek" refers to a state of spiritual humility and gentleness where one is strong but under God's control, not ruled by self-will or pride, and will inherit the earth. Meekness involves admitting one's need for others and God, receiving correction, and being willing to put others' needs first, leading to a deep and blessed walk with God. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Well, sadly it's been major news for more than a week—Charlie Kirk was murdered last week while speaking to university students. John MacArthur recently went to be with the Lord, a bittersweet reality—his presence will be deeply missed, yet he is now in glory with Christ. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar reflect on the tremendous legacy he left behind, remembering how his ministry shaped their lives and influenced the broader church. Mark recalls MacArthur being the very first Christian author he read, who introduced him to expository preaching. Expository preaching works carefully through the Bible verse by verse, letting the passage itself dictate the theme. This approach addresses the issue of biblical illiteracy in America and prevents preachers from overlooking difficult or uncomfortable truths. MacArthur modeled this for decades, never losing the thrill of studying the text and preparing to preach.MacArthur's unwavering commitment was to elevate Christ while letting Scripture speak plainly and powerfully. The memorial service reflected a life well-lived, faithfully completed, and entirely Christ-centered. E.Z. recalls meeting him at a conference, where MacArthur's warmth and approachability were evident, even taking time to endorse his book. Ray first encountered him the weekend of E.Z.'s wedding, grateful for the opportunity to introduce a friend to MacArthur. Oscar emphasizes MacArthur's doctrinal clarity, noting how his ministry cultivated churches filled with men passionate about the truth. Everyone lives with theology, but MacArthur insisted it must be accurate and consistent. His final words pointed to God's grace conquering his heart and taking away the sting of death. The guys remind listeners that while every hero of the faith remains human and imperfect, they can and should still be honored. MacArthur was a sinner like all of us, yet he was also a trailblazer whose courage and steadiness stand as examples. His courage inspired many, and his ministry drew believers across theological traditions, demonstrating that unity can coexist with disagreement. Honoring leaders before they are gone is a needed practice, resisting the pull of cancel culture and offering encouragement while it can still be heard. MacArthur feared God more than man, leaving behind a testimony that truth must always be spoken.E.Z. concludes with powerful quotes from MacArthur. Other tributes highlight the broad scope of his impact and the profound influence he had. When faithful servants like him go to the Lord, they continue to speak through the work and words they leave behind. Ultimately, the story is not about a great man but about a great God who delights in using willing, flawed people to shape entire generations.Send us a textThanks for listening! John MacArthur's recent passing is both sorrowful and hopeful, as the church grieves his absence yet rejoices because he is now with the Lord. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar reflect on his significant influence, recalling how he introduced many to expository preaching, faithfully working through Scripture verse by verse instead of letting topics drive the message. They share memories of his warmth in personal encounters, his passion for doctrinal clarity, and his courage to stand firm even when threatened during times of cultural opposition. His voice carried clarity and conviction, always pointing to Christ and letting God's word speak for itself. While recognizing his humanity and imperfections, they honor him as a trailblazer whose ministry built churches filled with a love for truth and whose legacy transcended denominational and theological boundaries. His life and preaching serve as a reminder that God delights in using faithful but flawed people to advance His glory, leaving a legacy that will continue to influence generations to come.Send us a textThanks for listening! Dobson and MacArthur shaped a movement. Now it's time to ask: at what cost? ✨ Episode Summary In this powerful roundtable conversation, host Corey Nathan is joined by author and public theologian Lisa Sharon Harper and pastor Joe Smith to explore the complex legacies of James Dobson and John MacArthur—two towering figures in American Evangelicalism who recently passed away. In this episode, Ronn and Mike discuss the significance of Jesus' actions and speeches in John 5. The text leads them to discuss some of the necessary complexities of the Trinity, especially the relationship between the Father and the Son. They also talk about the role of good works in faith, noticing that the early church did not fear good works as it related to being loyal to God and Jesus. The beginning of the episode includes an appreciation for the legacy of John MacArthur, who had recently passed away. Ronn had worked under Dr. MacArthur at The Master's University in Newhall, CA in the mid-1990s.
Send us a textGUEST: MATT MACARTHUR, eldest son of Pastor John MacArthurThere are several common terms for the ceremony that takes place after death—funeral, celebration of life, memorial service. You can tell a lot about the deceased by the manner and mood of their service. Some are focused on how accomplished and full of good works the person was. Others are about happy memories and photos. Still others are like a dirge, full of grief over the loss. The Bible says, “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep [dead], so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14).To be sure, there should be grief over the loss of a loved one, for we will never see or speak to that person again in this life. Jesus Himself wept when seeing the family and friends of Lazarus lament over his death, not because they wouldn't see him again (He was about to raise him from the grave) but because death is the ultimate enemy and reality of our sin-corrupted world. But the passage above says believers shouldn't “grieve as do the rest who have no hope” because of the promise that God will bring true believers into His presence in heaven to live for eternity, where there is no sin, pain, or death. This is why for the believer the service following death should largely focus on the greatness of God and how He brings the believer into an infinitely better eternity. Instead of a memorializing or celebrating this life, it really should be a worship service of God for this life, and even more, the next.I attended the memorial service for pastor John MacArthur this past weekend at Grace Community Church in Los Angeles, MacArthur went to heaven back on July 14 at age 86 after nearly three years of health problems.Outside my parents, MacArthur has had the most important influence on my life, through his preaching and character. So my older brother and I traveled to the church, as we have done many times over the years for the Shepherds' Conference, an annual convergence for men in ministry. Only this time, we wouldn't be hearing MacArthur preach. We would be hearing others praise God for the grace and gifting he showered on MacArthur's life and the eternal reward he is now receiving.Scripture was read by MacArthur recorded from a past sermon. John Piper offered a personal reflection. Alistair Begg prayed. Joni Eareckson Tada sang and spoke. MacArthur's two sons, Matt and Mark, offered personal perspectives. Sinclair Ferguson preached. Christ-exalting hymns were sung by the Gettys, soloists, choir, and congregation. It was two hours and forty-five minutes of worshiping God for the good work He did in the life and ministry of John MacArthur.MacArthur's eldest son Matt joins us today on the program. Matt and his wife have been married for 40 years and are the parents of three adult children and grandparents of seven. He works in the investment management business and also serves as the president of Grace to You. Matt will offer unique insight into his dad and what the family was aiming to accomplish in the service.---------------------------------Watch John MacArthur's Memorial ServiceJohn MacArthur biography by Iain Murray
