September 17, 2024 Daily Devotion: "The Full Armor of God" Ephesians 6:11 New International Version 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. Have you ever been on the receiving end of a lie? The deception stings like a swarm of bees to the soul. Satan, the father of lies, has plagued humanity since the Garden of Eden. When the serpent tempted Eve, he used half-truths to lure her to disobedience. Satan tempted Eve to focus on what God had forbidden instead of being thankful for all God had given her. Because Eve believed Satan's lie she doubted God's goodness and gave in to temptation. We sometimes deny the craftiness and destructive power of Satan. We might picture him to be a cartoon character who exists only on Halloween. To diminish his capacity to harm is to ignore the warnings of Scripture. Jesus warns of Satan's character as a liar. He calls him the father of lies, without any truth in him. It is therefore in his nature to deceive. Since Satan is actively scheming against us, we must arm ourselves against his deception. The Lord does not leave us empty-handed and defenseless. As our Great Provider, He has given us the spiritual armor to stand against anything Satan throws at us. In what area of your life are you struggling to see the truth about yourself, your relationship, or your circumstance? The father of lies is actively trying to prevent you from understanding the plan God has for you. Today, remember that God has given you everything you need to stand against the devil.

Part V of our ongoing Matthew series covers Matthew 13:53–18:35. We’ll discuss Jesus’ massive public miracles like the feeding of the five thousand and also His intimate, personal miracles like the temple-tax shekel in the fish’s mouth. We’ll study revelations of Jesus’ true identity in the Transfiguration and in His lordship over nature. We’ll learn […]
What do we see about Jesus in this passage? We see his compassionate care, even when it's not convenient. How do we respond? We shouldn't close our eyes and ignore the facts. We might be tempted to think we have nothing to offer, but Andrew speaks up. Jesus is not an answer, but the answer, and so we should trust our provider with everything.

Today, Tuesday September 28 “My Little Children” 1 John 5:19-21 “We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Throughout his epistle of 1 John, John has been addressing the believers with different labels. At least thirteen times he calls them “children”. And seven out of that thirteen, he calls them “little children”. John also calls them “young men” twice (1 John 2:13 & 14). And in the same two verses he calls them “fathers”. Do you see the apparent progression here? Little children, children, young men and then fathers. For sure these labels must represent different levels of growing up spiritually. We start out as “little children” and like new born babes we are helpless without a parent or someone watching out for us and making sure we are properly fed and clothed. As “children” we are immature and easily led astray by the allurements of the world. But we grow up some and become like “young men” who are strong and have begun to learn how to stand up against the world, the flesh and the devil. Finally, we grow to the place where we become “fathers” and now are leading others to Christ and discipling them into spiritual maturity too. (1 John 2) It appears that John really loves these believers and has a personal relationship with them because in 1 John 2:1 he calls them “My little children”. And that's how he finishes his letter in this last verse when again, he calls them “my little children”, and reminds them to keep themselves from idols. There is a sense in which we must remain as “little children” even if we have grown somewhat into spiritual maturity. We must never lose the faith of a child! We must never lose the helplessness of a child! We must never lose the dependency that a little child has on their provider and protector! If we are not careful we can allow the idols of this world replace the reality of the true and living God. Remember in Psalm 115, we are told that those who worship idols become like the idols they make in their lives. In other words, our lives become empty and vain. Is it any wonder that the Apostle Paul's last admonition in the great resurrection chapter of 1 Corinthians 15 was also about this! “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:57-58) Today, live for Christ and eternity, and don't squander your life living for empty and vain idols! And be careful to maintain your dependency on our Great Provider and Protector, Jesus Christ! God bless!
We can so often get distracted by what we don't have, that we forget what we do have. Jesus is our Great Provider and as we are reminded in this text, He is in the boat with us and sees every need.
Independence is highly priced in this world; the idea that we can sustain ourselves and pull our own weight is seen as a pivotal virtue in our culture. But Paul's relationship with the Philippians tells a different story, as they are deeply interdependent on one another, both in material and spiritual needs that overflow from the dependence they already have in the great provision of God.
When you provide for someone, you meet the needs of the person. That's what God does to us as Paul says in Philippians 4:10-20. So learn to share what God gives you with others.

The Lord provides for us in ways we may never even realize. May we go through each day in awareness of His goodness and loving compassion. He is our great provider.
