Today I chat with Greg Wilkinson from Death Metal legends Autopsy about the 80s B-Movie classic C.H.U.D. Plus we delve into his horror history & get some killer Static Abyss, Deathgrave & Autopsy stories to boot.GREG WILKINSON // AUTOPSY // STATIC ABYSS / / DEATHGRAVE
Interview by Kris PetersThe common perception with iconic bands is that their musical output understandably slows the longer their careers go on.This could be for a variety of factors that are too many to mention, but no matter how many excuses there are, try telling legendary Californian death metal outfit Autopsy that they should be slowing down.Coming just 12 months after the release of Morbidity Triumphant, the timeless warriors last week unveiled another slab of metal excellence in the form of Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts.A sonic barrage that sounds as if it were conceived in the bowels of Hell itself, Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts is, if anything, an ever more polished performance from Autopsy given that new bass player Greg Wilkinson not only has one album under his belt before this release, but also the fact he had more involvement in the complete album cycle.Wilkinson joined HEAVY earlier for a chat about the new material and more."It's been good," he smiled at the response to the new album. "It was kind of scary putting two albums a year apart and some people were definitely nervous at how are they gonna put two records out and make them good."I point out the above-mentioned fact that bands generally reduce their output in the latter stages of their career, a point which he shrugs off casually."I can't speak on behalf of before me joining the band, but there was that whole COVID lockdown thing," he measured, "that I think maybe built a little back up. And then me joining the band nad also having input in that stuff. There was four of us who could all write songs, so you have four people, you have a big break from shows; from writing records; from recording. The whole world shut down for a year and a half, so I'm sure those are all elements that came into play. In the end, the fact of the matter is I think once we get the wheels rolling we just keep going. It seems like we just kept going. Kinetic energy, that's my answer."In the full interview, Greg talks about the musical side of the new album, how it differs sonically to Morbidity Triumphant, how the singles released represent the album, the horror-inspired film clip for Rabid Funeral, how he is settling into his role in the band after joining in 2021, how he came to be a member of Autopsy and more.
Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 276 features an interview with Fern Alberts of Deathgrave. Originally formed by a group of friends to play classic anarcho-punk, Deathgrave eventually morphed into one of the more thoughtful and original deathgrind bands to emerge from the Bay Area. It doesn't hurt that their guitarist is producer Greg Wilkinson, who is both a Grammy award winner and a current member of Autopsy (quite a pair of accomplishments). I spoke with Deathgrave bassist Fern Alberts about where Deathgrave's discordance and odd time signatures come from, and what musical styles wouldn't make their way into one of their songs. We also discussed the band in-joke that led to the title of the latest Deathgrave album, It's Only Midnight, and the imaginary neighbourhood where Deathgrave's lyrics take place. My thanks again to Fern for speaking with me, and to you for listening. Music In This Episode: "Seeping Through The Shoebox" "This Is What You Get Pt. 2" taken from the album So Real, It's Now "Tony's Deli" "Lonely Streets" taken from the album It's Only Midnight Thanks for listening! Ep. 83 - Greg Wilkinson (Deathgrave). In this episode I talk to Deathgrave founder and guitarist Greg Wilkinson. Deathgrave formed in 2013 and currently based out of San Jose, CA. The band incorporate elements of punk, grindcore, and death metal to create a unique, multidimensional sound. The 1st album 'So Real Its Now' was released in 2018 and takes you on a frightful mind trip. Deathgrave will release their 2nd album 'It's Only Midnight' on April 14th via Tankcrimes. We talk about the formation of Deathgrave, the upcoming album, joining Autopsy, and the upcoming tour with Necrot & Mortiferum. I hope everyone enjoys this episode. Welcome back metal heads to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. I'm Xander and today we will be talking about the brand new album by the old school death metal band Autopsy titled Morbidity Triumphant. I've been a fan of this band for a good 11 years now ever since an old friend of mine showed me their first two classic albums Severed Survival and Mental Funeral. I have always enjoyed the harrowing vocals of Chris Reifert and respected him for his ability to not only be the lead vocalist but the drummer at the same time! Its extremely rare for a drummer to be doing vocals in any genre of music. As for the band's later records, I found myself enjoying Macabre Eternal and Headless Ritual. Morbidity Triumphant is the band's first album in 8 years since the release of 2014's Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves. This band has made a name for itself over the last three decades and have achieved legendary status among all metalheads. It is a shame that I have never seen them in concert, especially since they managed to unintentionally create a brand new form of mosh pit during the last Maryland Death Fest. I have to keep it G-rated so I won't talk about that here, but if you know ... you know. Kicking things off we have the first track titled "Stabbed In The Brain". We are immediately blown away by the immense power of Chris' drums and not even a minute into the track we have our first of many chaotic guitar solos. It is everything that you can come to expect from a band like Autopsy. Next we have a song called "Final Frost". It is yet another solid track where the vocals continue to stand out as always. There is just something about the way Chris' vocal sound that give it that extra zombie horror vibe. I especially like the way the song ends with the vocals being dragged along as the music fades out. The guitar intro for "The Voracious One" has a very windy but rhythmic sound. Danny Coralles and Eric Cutler make the music for this track sound like rock music but with Chris's monstrous voice layered over it. It almost sounds a little groovy in a way. "Born In Blood" is another banger and so is "Flesh Strewn Temple". "Tapestry of Scars" and "Knife Slice, Axe Chop" had their incredible moments along with audible bass in the sound mix. Greg Wilkinson is the newest addition to the line-up and does an outstanding job filling in for bass. Moving on we have a song titled "Skin by Skin" where we hear more of the bass in the beginning accompanied by a cavernous bellow by the vocalist and his very slow drum beat. This one is honestly kind of a boring track and it serves as filler. Sure, the song picks up in speed a litte but only for one part. The guitar solo was also sorta mediocre. "Maggots in the Mirror" is a much faster track that I could see a crowd of people doing a circle pit. It definitely seems like this album can't make up its mind whether or not it wants to be fast or slow. There's a pattern. Slow songs then fast songs, slow songs then fast songs. "Slaughter of Souls" goes back to being slow again, almost as if this entire album is meant for High Intensity Interval Training. "Your Eyes Will Turn to Dust" is the final track on this album and its the same formulaic approach. Starting slow, then picking up the pase only to go into death doom territory. This is the type of thing that Autopsy has always done. Sure, it's great death metal but at the same time its really hard to get into it when there's no real twist or turns. Morbidity Triumphant is not a bad album. In fact this album is really good just like all of their other albums with the exception of Shit Fun. We don't talk about that album. Every great band has their magnum opus and every great band eventually has their St. Anger. I love Autopsy. Autopsy is a band that never strays from the path of brutality, which is why I highly respect them. So with all things considered, I'm going to give Morbidity Triumphant an 8 out of 10.
