Coleman is joined LIVE in studio by former host and Powerchord brother, Chris "The Mountain" for a run down of upcoming local death metal gigs from Phrenelith, Necrot, and more; new music from Misyrion, Krash, Spectral Wound, Wormwitch, Pallbearer, and others.
Rolling Stone magazine took their moniker from the obvious place. We recently learned that CREEM mag did indeed borrow their name from the legendary Cream. So we realized there were a lot of artist's names that would make magazine titles as well. So this week we compiled our own list whose names fit the description of a cool magazine. "Jimi" would be a great guitar mag. "Doro" would be a cool for Ms. type mag for the ladies of the scene. How about "Bathory" for the Black Metal crowd? I'd say we came up with great choices. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we crank some new + used from Cloven Hoof, Necrot, Chaos UK, Oxygen Destroyer, Killer (80s), Tarot (Swe.) Holocausto Cannibal and with introduce Sweden's Bronze in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!!

We finished off with an interview with Luca Indrio of Necrot about the new album Lifeless Birth. We got into all the issues the band had to go through between the last album and this one, carving there own identify in death metal, keeping there songs memorable, and at the end messed around with some band vs. band and album vs. album questions. After the release of the now-classic Alive or Just Breathing, Western Massachusetts-based Killswitch Engage experienced a set back that could stifle many bands on the verge of success. With the sudden departure of original (and current) frontman Jesse Leach, the band was forced to find a suitable replacement. Through an extensive search, they found their vocalist in Blood Has Been Shed's Howard Jones who quickly joined the band on the road as well as the studio to craft their follow-up album. Ep. 83 - Greg Wilkinson (Deathgrave). In this episode I talk to Deathgrave founder and guitarist Greg Wilkinson. Deathgrave formed in 2013 and currently based out of San Jose, CA. The band incorporate elements of punk, grindcore, and death metal to create a unique, multidimensional sound. The 1st album 'So Real Its Now' was released in 2018 and takes you on a frightful mind trip. Deathgrave will release their 2nd album 'It's Only Midnight' on April 14th via Tankcrimes. We talk about the formation of Deathgrave, the upcoming album, joining Autopsy, and the upcoming tour with Necrot & Mortiferum. I hope everyone enjoys this episode. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 249 features an interview with Chad Gailey of Mortuous. Beginning as guitarist/vocalist Colin Tarvin's solo project, Mortuous quickly expanded to a full lineup that now includes members of fellow Bay Area acts Exhumed and Necrot. The band's sound has likewise grown from classic death metal to include doomy passages with piano and violin accompaniment. I spoke with drummer Chad Gailey about how he became a part of Mortuous, and his long friendship with Colin Tarvin. We also discussed why the material on their latest album Upon Desolation was so challenging for him, and whether or not the new songs are "technical". My thanks to Chad for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Music In This Episode: "Prisoner Unto Past" "Bitterness" taken from the album Through Wilderness "Defiled By Fire" "Ash And Dismay" taken from the album Upon Desolation "The Eternal Return" taken from the compilation Among The Lost / Mors Immortalis Thanks for listening! Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 248 features an interview with Daniel Butler of Acephalix. Sharing members with Mortuous, Necrot, and Vastum, Acephalix has been a key part of the surging Bay area death metal scene. The band has evolved from their crusty beginnings to embrace the style that emerged from Sweden, Finland, and the UK over 30 years ago. I spoke with vocalist Daniel Butler about how the latest Acephalix lineup came together, and the through line connecting all their releases. We also discussed the theological and philosophical underpinnings of their latest album, Theothanatology, and the distinction between the death of God and godlessness. My thanks to Daniel for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Music In This Episode: "Suffer (Life in Fragments)" "Egoic Skin" taken from the album Decreation "Innards of Divinity" "Godheads" taken from the album Theothanatology "Tomb of Our Fathers" taken from the album Deathless Master Thanks for listening! For over a decade, Chad Gailey has been continually cementing himself as one of modern death metal's hardest working and most respected figures. He's the man at the drums of the almighty Necrot, whose bombastic sensibilities have helped catapult the band to a leading position among today's death metal greats. If that wasn't already enough, Chad is the force behind the much revered Carbonized Records; easily one of the most esteemed contemporary extreme metal labels. We caught up with Chad to discuss his curation of Carbonized, his crust punk roots, and his complete love and devotion to metal. Stick around! Bay Area's Necrot have, in short order, become a household name for those of us that love our death metal sinewy and with tons of blood and guts yet keeping intact the basic tenets that death metal was built upon. Their first full length Blood Offerings saw the band explode with tons of positive coverage and electrifying live shows to back it up. And now with their second offering Mortal they build on this success with an even gnarlier sound that will appeal to not only death metal fans but fans of all metal far and wide. There's no escaping the hype train for these guys but it is well deserved, this is a band that is building their future by staying true to themselves and working as hard as they can to share true death metal with the masses. It's vicious, pummeling ecstacy and truly lightning in a bottle. Ahead of Mortal's release, Luca took some precious time to chat with Buke about the upcoming album and how their hard work has paid dividends to gain as much attention to their brand of death metal as possible. They also spend some time on the impact of their debut Blood Offerings, Luca's early days in Italy organizing shows, why "Stench of Decay" was selected as the lead off single, Luca's Metal vs Racism joint venture with Eric from Gatecreeper, and so much more! This is their conversation -- jump in and take listen! Mortals will be available August 28 on Bandcamp, and on Tankcrimes.
