In this episode of the podcast, Jenny speaks to Jim Nolan and Michael Power who have just finished their sold-out run of Jim's new play Castel Gandolfo at Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford. The play revolves around a family whose long-buried secret threatens to unsettle the delicate balance they have established. In the podcast, Jim discusses the play and his life as a playwright and director from the 1970s to the present, and Michael reflects on his development as an actor as he has moved from variety shows and musicals to parts in Normal People, Vikings, and a variety of roles in local and national theatre productions.

Do all faith traditions lead to the same destination? Or is the idea that all spiritual roads lead to the same place itself insufficient? In this episode we welcome back West Virginia University Sociology Professor Jim Nolan to talk about his concept of the “Temple of Truth” and how different perspectives and entry points lead not to the same place, but deeply into each other. BONUS: Jim shares his “Apostate's Creed,” a corrective to unthinking and uncritical religious dogma. *For a diagram of Jim's Temple of Truth, find the episode page on our website at https://accidentaltomatoes.com
With tensions regarding police violence on the rise, we've seen lots of conversation about how to reform policing or even redistribute funding from certain areas of police activity to other types of support agencies. But former police officer Dr. Jim Nolan, professor of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University and author of two in-depth books on police reform, says the real solution goes beyond catch phrases and hashtags to a fundamental re-thinking of what police departments should—and should not—actually be about. In this episode Jim talks with Joe and Brandon about how a fundamental shift from a strict focus on law enforcement to one built on social contexts could really make our communities safer and even improve both mental and physical health for people.
"We were trying to look at opportunities to reduce hesitancy and to get people to take their shot," said Jim Nolan, chief operating officer for Kraft Sports and Entertainment.

Cincinnati's music history is long and rich. Still, the new music scene here tends to fly under the radar; a lot of people outside our region don't realize just how profoundly — and diversely — artistic the Queen City is.Jim Nolan, host of WVXU's 'Local Exposure,' is one of the faithful keepers of the Tristate's creative flame. His show features local artists and introduces the wider NPR audience to them. This week, Jonathan sat down with him to talk about local music history, discuss the artists that are driving the scene today, spin an all-Cincy playlist, and finally tease out Jim's long-untold hero origin story.PLAYLIST HIGHLIGHTS: Brand new music from Chuck Cleaver (Wussy, Ass Ponys), Carriers, and Phasmids. Classic spins from The Raisins, Over the Rhine, The Sweep, and Mad Anthony, plus tracks from Paige Beller, Wonky Tonk, Electric Citizen, TRIIIBE, Us, Today, and others.
It's hoped that Jim Nolan's latest play will be staged at Garter Lane in November, but it's contingent on €7,500 being reached through a Fundit campaign. There was a special launch of the play and the campaign in Tully's pub in Waterford City recently, and Mary was there for "On the Fringe."

In this episode of the podcast, Dr. Jenny O'Connor is joined by Dr. Una Kealy and former Theatre Studies and English student Laura Broderick. Una, together with Dr. Kate McCarthy, runs the Performing the Region research project in collaboration with WIT students, Garter Lane Arts Centre and director Jim Nolan and here, she discusses the three plays that have formed the cornerstones of the project thus far: Jim Nolan's Blackwater Angel, Teresa Deevy's Wife to James Whelan, and Una Troy's Mount Prospect, which is currently running at Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford. Laura is one of the cast of Mount Prospect, and she discusses the character she plays, as well as some of the important thematic concerns of the play. The act of reviving and recouping the voices of South East theatre for a new audience is of primary importance for the project, and another of its strands, Performing Women, is concerned with the reclamation of women's voices in particular. The productions at Garter Lane bring WIT students together from courses as diverse as Arts, Architecture, Music, Entertainment Systems and Graphic Design.
Always a pleasure to talk to Jim Nolan anytime of the year. At the moment he's working on Mt. Prospect - a co-production with WIT and Garter Lane. Jim talks about this fascinating collaboration and how it is benefiting students in lots of ways - as well as sharing his insight into Garter Lane's important place in Waterford Theatre development.
