This special episode of Friday Focus was recorded in front of a live audience at the Hot Docs Curious Minds Festival and the full length edition being made available to all paying and non-paying subscribers To find out how to purchase tickets to the Munk Debate on the Two-State Solution (or to access the livestream) go to www.munkdebates.com Rudyard and Janice start today's show unpacking Zohran Mamdani's mayoral victory in New York City. How did this young and inexperienced politician build such a broad coalition? What is the message we should take away from his big win? Janice argues that this race is not the only one that matters; Democratic wins in Virginia and New Jersey with more moderate candidates offer an important lesson that in order to win you need a big tent with a wide variety of voices. What role did technology play in these elections, and should we be worried about how it is affecting the democratic process? Rudyard and Janice then turn to the US government shutdown which is being weaponized by both parties. Unfortunately neither side will negotiate without concessions and the public is being held hostage. In the remaining moments Rudyard and Janice offer their analysis of Mark Carney's first federal budget as Prime Minister. Both agree that the budget did not live up to expectations; the government needed to make some big cuts and ask Canadians to sacrifice to get our economy back on track. As Janice puts it, the biggest problem we have in this country is we think being nice is the most important value. It's not. To support the Friday Focus podcast consider becoming a donor to the Munk Debates for as little as $25 annually, or $.50 per episode. Canadian donors receive a charitable tax receipt.

“Parenting is a spiritual path of growth and evolution.” Have you ever noticed how children have a way of teaching us the deepest truths about life without ever saying a word? In their laughter, their play, their curiosity, and even their tantrums, they mirror back to us who we really are. In this episode of Soul Talk, I share the most important lessons my 2-year-old son has taught me, lessons about love, ego, happiness, and presence. Parenting, I've discovered, isn't just about raising a child. It's a profound spiritual path, one that stretches you, humbles you, and calls you to live with greater integrity and selflessness. From learning that happiness is our true nature, not something we chase, to remembering the sacredness of ordinary moments, I'll take you through the ways fatherhood has transformed me. You'll hear how children act as mirrors for our unhealed wounds, why they copy everything we do, and how their playfulness and curiosity invite us back to a simpler, freer way of living. If you've ever felt weighed down by life's seriousness, struggled to stay present with loved ones, or wondered how to break cycles of generational pain, this conversation will open your heart. Because at its core, parenting and life itself aren't about perfection. It's about choosing love, healing what we've carried, and leaving a legacy of wholeness for the next generation. Real joy isn't in the milestones or the accomplishments. Real joy is in the everyday moments, moments we often overlook until they're gone. And sometimes, it takes the eyes of a child to remind us of that truth. Timestamps: (00:04:23) - Parenting as another world. (00:05:39) - Parenting = spiritual path/ego purification. (00:08:02) - Selflessness, generational thinking & responsibility. (00:11:14) - Child as mirror; fruit of inner work. (00:13:23) - “They copy everything” — integrity & who-you-are matters. (00:19:16) - Curiosity / non-judgement / in-the-moment emotional release. (00:21:10) - Happiness is our nature/stop seeking. (00:24:09) - Savor ordinary moments; “he will never be this small again.” (00:26:48) - Unconditional love / “I'm lovable just the way I am.” Some questions I ask: What conditions do I put on my happiness? What is parenting really like, beyond what we imagine? How does being a parent purify the ego? Can a man truly become a man without being responsible for another life? How do children reflect the parts of us we haven't healed? How much are kids absorbing from everything we do and say? Am I appreciating the ordinary moments that will never come again? In this episode, you will learn about: Why parenting is one of the most profound spiritual paths. How children mirror our subconscious patterns and unresolved wounds. The importance of integrity, why kids learn more from what we do than what we say. Lessons on play, presence, and embracing life's ordinary moments. How to reconnect with happiness as your natural state of being. The power of healing your own consciousness to gift your children freedom from generational pain. No engineering project is a success without one crucial aspect. What is it?
As part of the events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggressionfrom1931 to 1945 and the World Anti-Fascist War, many war-themed movies have or are going to hit cinema screens both at home and overseas. Dead to Rights is one of them. Centered on the Nanjing Massacre, in just eight days since its July 25 release, the movie has become the top-grossing film of the country's summer box office, with revenues surpassing 1 billion yuan. Based on true events, the film follows a group of civilians in a Japanese-controlled photo studio in Nanjing, where, as they are forced to develop images for the occupiers, they secretly document the atrocities being carried out by the Japanese troops, risking their lives to preserve the evidence of Japanese war crimes. Many moviegoers have attributed the film's success to its powerful storytelling and compelling performances, describing it as a vivid "history lesson" for the younger generation. Another film, 731, which revisits the horrific World War II-era human experiments conducted by Japan's notorious biological and chemical warfare unit, the eponymous 731, is set to premiere on Sept 18, to coincide with the 94th anniversary of the Sept 18 Incident in 1931, which marked the start of Japan's invasion of China. During the 14-year-long war, China suffered more than 35 million casualties, both military and civilian, and Japanese troops committed countless heinous crimes that deserved universal condemnation. Yet due to various reasons, many people in the West are still not fully aware of the horrific acts committed by Japanese invaders in China eight decades ago. While the Holocaust is taught in all history textbooks in the West, the Nanjing Massacre remains not fully understood despite its scale and significance. In 2022, when Evan Kail, a US pawnshop owner, decided to donate a photo album documenting Japanese wartime atrocities in China to the Chinese consulate in Chicago, he even faced death threats. "I want more people to know the truth," he explained about his courageous act. Now after watching Dead to Rights, Kail has urged all people, especially those in the West, to see the film, so that "the story of what was in (that) photo album could continue to be shared". Indeed, the war-related films are not intended to foster animosity but to help shape our collective memory so that these war crimes will never be forgotten. This is the right way to honor those who gave their lives to uphold freedom, justice and peace, and mourn the loss of innocent lives brutally taken during the war. Only by remembering the horrors of the past can people today truly cherish peace. It is outrageous that Japanese rightists still try to deny Japan's wartime atrocities and successive postwar Japanese governments still try to whitewash the country's past crimes. This makes people in countries victimized by Japanese aggressors doubt whether the country has really severed itself from its militaristic past. They rightly question whether Japan is ready to join hands with its Asian neighbors to build a peaceful and prosperous future. That some politicians in Japan are still regularly paying homage to the Yasukuni Shrine, where convicted war criminals who committed atrocities against humanity are enshrined, makes the sporadic apologies and remorse Japan has previously expressed for that war of aggression sound hollow and perfunctory. But it should be noted that Japanese people were also the victims of Japan's wartime militarism. It is wrong to foster hatred against a people just because a small minority of Japanese militarists set off the war of aggression. Rather, the people of China and Japan should pass on friendship from generation to generation through improved communication, bearing in mind that forgetting history is tantamount to the betrayal of truth. universal condemnationn.普遍谴责/ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəl ˌkɒndəmˈneɪʃən/wartime militarismn.战时军国主义/ˈwɔːtaɪm ˈmɪlɪtəˌrɪzəm/

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned in this column that you would see some subtle changes here at MinistryWatch in 2025. One of those changes would be in the way we cover stories that relate to what we might call the “brokenness” in the world. It's not enough simply to say what happened. We want to do a better job of saying why and how something happened, and to be more explicit about the lessons that we can learn from that story. We published a couple of examples of that approach in the past two weeks. I'd like to talk about them today. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.

All things must end. But endings always bring new beginnings. As the year 2024 comes to a close, many of us become thoughtful and introspective. In my case, the introspection has allowed to think on the many changes I've personally made throughout this year and the dungeon master I'm morphing into. So today, I'd like to share some of the most important lessons I've learned over this last year and hopefully some of these lessons can help you too.Welcome back to How to Be a Better DM. If you're listening to this show, you've tried not being the dungeon master. You've stopped DMing and have just tried to be a player for a while, but for whatever reason, you just can't not be the DM. Other people stop showing up, you feel the urge to write and run the story or it's just in your blood. And because of that, we made this show to help you with your affliction! I'm your host Justin Lewis and I'm very happy to be chatting with you today of all days because tomorrow on December 6th, I will be guesting on 2 panels at Dragonsteel Nexus in Salt Lake City. Dragonsteel Nexus is the convention put on by Brandon Sanderson's company Dragonsteel and I'm lucky enough to be able to participate. If you're in the area, you should grab a ticket and come and hang out with me in real life. I'll be joining a panel on TTRPGs for Authors and Writers and another on GMing 101. It should be a fun experience and frankly, I am a little nervous so any positive vibes are appreciated. This year was the first year where any of us here at Session 0 Studios and How to Be a DM were able to guest on panels. The first happened earlier this year at Dead Wars in Provo Utah and frankly, we've all evolved a lot since then. But before I get to the lessons learned, I must tell you guys something; I'm going to be a little vulnerable here. I'm a sham.I'm not saying this for sympathy or anything, I'm just trying to be real and vulnerable. On most days, I feel like a big fat phony. It's mostly because I honestly consider myself to be a pretty mediocre Dungeon Master. Looking back over my DMing career, I see a huge gap between where I am and where I want to be. It's humbling really. I've gotten so much better over this last year, but that improvement has really only made me more aware of how much farther there still is to go.When I first started How to Be a Better DM, I started it for a few reasons. First of all, I love podcasts and I love podcasting. Back in 2016 and 2017, I'm pretty sure I told people that podcasts were among the things I did for fun. I love the medium and I love being able to say something. I think we all have something to say, and maybe podcasting is my way of saying something.Secondly, and this is something most of you are probably not aware of, I had a previous podcast and that turned out to be less than successful, as least in my eyes. I want to do this full-time and the previous podcast wasn't really going anywhere. It was a personal development podcast about doing hard things to make your life better. I called it The Hard Thing Podcast. Yeah… I know… Not the greatest name. Towards the end, I actually ended up rebranding it to Becoming the Hero which is actually still live to this day. I stopped doing that podcast because I'd tried putting together a summit of previous guests which included a couple navy seals, army rangers and a CIA spy. It was an online summit and even with a small advertising budget, I didn't get any signups even when I dropped the price to free. I felt like I didn't have any authority in that space and I eventually stopped putting out episodes because I felt the target market was too broad and that I couldn't compete. When I stopped putting out episodes and nobody reached out asking where I'd gone, I knew it was the right decision. In contrast, I saw Dungeons and Dragons as a great market to get into. I love the game and I...
