All things must end. But endings always bring new beginnings. As the year 2024 comes to a close, many of us become thoughtful and introspective. In my case, the introspection has allowed to think on the many changes I've personally made throughout this year and the dungeon master I'm morphing into. So today, I'd like to share some of the most important lessons I've learned over this last year and hopefully some of these lessons can help you too.Welcome back to How to Be a Better DM. If you're listening to this show, you've tried not being the dungeon master. You've stopped DMing and have just tried to be a player for a while, but for whatever reason, you just can't not be the DM. Other people stop showing up, you feel the urge to write and run the story or it's just in your blood. And because of that, we made this show to help you with your affliction! I'm your host Justin Lewis and I'm very happy to be chatting with you today of all days because tomorrow on December 6th, I will be guesting on 2 panels at Dragonsteel Nexus in Salt Lake City. Dragonsteel Nexus is the convention put on by Brandon Sanderson's company Dragonsteel and I'm lucky enough to be able to participate. If you're in the area, you should grab a ticket and come and hang out with me in real life. I'll be joining a panel on TTRPGs for Authors and Writers and another on GMing 101. It should be a fun experience and frankly, I am a little nervous so any positive vibes are appreciated. This year was the first year where any of us here at Session 0 Studios and How to Be a DM were able to guest on panels. The first happened earlier this year at Dead Wars in Provo Utah and frankly, we've all evolved a lot since then. But before I get to the lessons learned, I must tell you guys something; I'm going to be a little vulnerable here. I'm a sham.I'm not saying this for sympathy or anything, I'm just trying to be real and vulnerable. On most days, I feel like a big fat phony. It's mostly because I honestly consider myself to be a pretty mediocre Dungeon Master. Looking back over my DMing career, I see a huge gap between where I am and where I want to be. It's humbling really. I've gotten so much better over this last year, but that improvement has really only made me more aware of how much farther there still is to go.When I first started How to Be a Better DM, I started it for a few reasons. First of all, I love podcasts and I love podcasting. Back in 2016 and 2017, I'm pretty sure I told people that podcasts were among the things I did for fun. I love the medium and I love being able to say something. I think we all have something to say, and maybe podcasting is my way of saying something.Secondly, and this is something most of you are probably not aware of, I had a previous podcast and that turned out to be less than successful, as least in my eyes. I want to do this full-time and the previous podcast wasn't really going anywhere. It was a personal development podcast about doing hard things to make your life better. I called it The Hard Thing Podcast. Yeah… I know… Not the greatest name. Towards the end, I actually ended up rebranding it to Becoming the Hero which is actually still live to this day. I stopped doing that podcast because I'd tried putting together a summit of previous guests which included a couple navy seals, army rangers and a CIA spy. It was an online summit and even with a small advertising budget, I didn't get any signups even when I dropped the price to free. I felt like I didn't have any authority in that space and I eventually stopped putting out episodes because I felt the target market was too broad and that I couldn't compete. When I stopped putting out episodes and nobody reached out asking where I'd gone, I knew it was the right decision. In contrast, I saw Dungeons and Dragons as a great market to get into. I love the game and I...
If you do 100 of anything you're bound to learn a few lessons. I outline the most important things I've learned about us human beings from the incredible conversations we've had on the podcast to date. This includes: - The difference between Health and Performance - How nobody actually cares about you - How your world view can be right and wrong - Why we should often do LESS, not more - The importance of consistency - How to have an impact on others - The dark side of the digital world - The power of curiosity And a whole lot more! Week 3 was not as close as Vegas (or Texans fans) had anticipated. Critical takeaways from an ugly game Houston hopes to put in their rearview mirror.
In this episode of the Mind Money Soul podcast, I'm going to be sharing the 7 important lessons that I've learnt on my journey about finances. One of the greatest lessons I've learnt is that it's important and necessary to take risks. People sometimes say "investing is risky”, but the irony is; saving your money instead of investing is risky and it has major downsides. A lot of us are taught from a young age that saving is the safest option and most of us bring this mindset into adulthood. But the reality is, inflation is eating into the buying power of your money and you are quite literally loosing your hard earned cash. Strategic, calculated risk-taking is not about being reckless; it's about making smart investments that can help you grow your wealth over time. By doing so, you're not just preserving your money, you're actively working to increase its value. Money is an incredible tool that can enable you to live the life of your dreams. It's not just about having enough to get by, it's about using your financial resources to create the lifestyle you desire.Tune in to discover some of the biggest eye-openers I've encountered on my financial journey and how you can apply them to your own life to build wealth and become financially free. In this episode: How to recognise why you shouldn't rely on others for money Why investing is the answer to building wealth, not saving How to understand the importance of taking strategic risks Why you can't budget your way out of a low income The quickest way to undo financial progress (avoid this) How to accept that your financial progress doesn't have a linear trajectory Resources Download the ULTIMATE annual money planner Connect with me on Instagram, on LinkedIn or on TikTok Send me an Email Book a Money Mindset Exploration Session Get a copy of my FREE Monthly Spending Planner Template Get a copy of my FREE Money Date Template Join Becoming Debt Free Join The Feel Good Investor
In this deeply personal solo episode, I open up about the three most transformative lessons I've learned on my grief journey. This episode is not just about coping—it's about finding a way to live fully, even as grief becomes part of who you are. I share raw, honest reflections, including a vulnerable moment with my daughter Madison that challenged me to confront feelings of shame and guilt. Through this experience, I realized that healing comes when we stop judging our emotions and start embracing them. Grief is not something we "get over." It's a lifelong companion, but one that can walk beside joy, hope, and meaning. I hope my story helps you feel less alone and gives you the strength to honor your own journey, wherever you are in it. Episode Highlights · Grief journey lessons · Coping with grief · Healing from loss · Grief and personal growth · Emotional healing through grief · Grief and vulnerability · Conversations about grief · Overcoming shame in grief · Living with grief · Grief and self-discovery · Grief and family connections · Grieving parent stories · Navigating grief with children · How to embrace grief without guilt · Transforming grief into personal growth · Talking openly about grief with loved ones · Healing through vulnerability and connection · Lessons learned from grieving a loved one · Balancing joy and grief in everyday life · The lifelong impact of grief on families · Emotional breakthroughs during the grief process · How sharing grief stories can lead to healing · Parenting through loss and grief Did you enjoy today's episode? The family is the first institution created by God. He calls us to guide and raise our families to honor Him. In Genesis 49, we come to the end of Jacob's life as he is surrounded by his family, and he gives blessings to each of his 12 sons who become the 12 tribes of Israel.

Many people are being called on right now to glorify God in their hour of trial or in a situation where it is costly to obey him.
One of the out workings of the gospel is that it will inevitably reorder your value system. This is exactly what we find in the book of Acts, in the life of an ordinary man name Stephen—he realized the value of the gospel and was willing to risk everything to preach it.
8 If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them. 9 But this is gain for a land in every way: a king committed to cultivated fields. 10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes?12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep. 13 There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. 15 As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. 16 This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind? 17 Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger. 18 Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. 19 Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart. - Ecclesiastes 5:8-20 (ESV) The Preacher Teaches 6 Important Lessons about Wealth: 1. Injustice, financial or otherwise, will be met by God's justice (5:8). 8 If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them. - Ecclesiastes 5:8 (ESV) 2. Do not expect to be satisfied with more wealth (5:10-11). 10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? - Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 (ESV) 3. Wealth can destroy (5:13-17). - Ecclesiastes 5:15-19 (ESV) 4. Wealth can be fleeting (5:14). 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. - Ecclesiastes 5:14 (ESV) 5. Wealth is granted to be enjoyed (5:18-20). -Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 (ESV) 6. Wield wealth to produce rather than to simply keep (5:9). 9 But this is gain for a land in every way: a king committed to cultivated fields. - Ecclesiastes 5:9 (ESV)

In this special episode of the Savvy Painter podcast, we're celebrating an incredible milestone: 10 years of being part of your art journey! Over the last decade, I've had the joy of connecting with so many amazing artists, sharing stories, struggles, and, most importantly, lessons. So, I thought, what better way to celebrate than to share my top 10 lessons from 10 years of Savvy Painter? These are the gems I've gathered from talking with hundreds of artists and diving deep into the art world. Let's dive in! What's on Your Canvas Reflects What's in Your Mind: The biggest game-changer for me was realizing how directly our thoughts shape our art. It's all about noticing how your feelings and thoughts come alive on your canvas through your brushstrokes. Be Intentional with Your Work and Time: Having a plan isn't just about avoiding distractions; it's about setting intentions for your art and focusing on them. Even something as simple as a sticky note with your goal can make a huge difference. Your Work Matters: Always remember that your art makes a difference. Even when doubts creep in, know that what you're creating has value, both to you and to the world. Perfection Isn't Good Enough: Chasing perfection can actually hold you back. Connect with people through your art instead of getting caught up in making every detail flawless. Be Selective About Who You Let into Your Studio: Not every voice deserves a say in your creative space. Keep out the negativity and focus on the positive influences that help you grow as an artist. The Four Stages of Your Practice: Embrace the cycle of making art, showing it, selling it, and then resting. Recognizing and honoring each stage is key to a fulfilling art practice. Community Is Key: Never underestimate the power of being part of a community of artists. It's comforting to know you're not alone in your artistic journey. Advocate for Your Work: Believing in your own art is the first step to getting others to believe in it too. Learn to talk about your work with confidence and love. Stay Out of Your Collectors' Wallets: Pricing your art isn't about guessing what others can afford; it's about valuing your work appropriately and letting the buyers decide for themselves. Love the Art and the Artist Who Creates It: This journey is all about love—loving the process, the creation, and, most importantly, yourself as the creator. Your art is a love letter to yourself, so cherish it and the person who brings it to life. Celebrating 10 years with you has been such an honor. Your stories, feedback, and the community we've built together have made Savvy Painter more than just a podcast; it's a shared space of inspiration and growth. Here's to many more years of painting, learning, and growing together. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey!
It's difficult to believe that I have been in business for nine whole years! For those unfamiliar with the story, nine years ago, in March, I was laid off from a startup — I had only been working there for three months. This startup had recruited me for a position I had held for years at a financial firm, where I worked as a graphic designer in strategic marketing. Then, three months later, the entire marketing department was axed in one fell swoop, leaving me with 30 days' notice. What I didn't know at the time was that they were attempting to avoid paying me unemployment. So there I was, paid to occupy space at my desk while I ostensibly hunted for new work. Instead, I seized those 30 days, predominantly throughout March of 2015, to kick-start my own business. Jump forward in time – it's nine years later – and I am still loving this wild ride! I've learned a LOT over the past nine years, and today I get into key lessons I'd like to share with you. Join me today for a trip down memory lane and a breakdown of 9 critically important lessons I've learned from 9 years in business! Thank you for listening!
