J.R. Jamison is joined by Trina Moyles to explore the fragility of our relationships with human and nonhuman species alike, and the imperative to protect the wild—along with the people we hold closest—through her new memoir, Black Bear. After years of working for human rights organizations, Trina Moyles returned to northern Alberta for a job as a fire tower lookout, while her brother Brendan worked in the oil sands, vulnerable to a boom-and-bust economy and substance addiction. When she was assigned to a tower in a wildlife corridor, bears were alarmingly visible and plentiful, wandering meters away on the other side of an electrified fence surrounding the tower. Over four summers, Trina begins to move beyond fear and observe the extraordinary essence of the maligned black bear—a keystone species who is as subject to the environmental consequences of the oil economy as humans. At the same time, she searches for common ground with Brendan on the land that bonded them.
We are absolutely thrilled to bring you this very special episode all about one of our favorite organizations in the Smokies, Appalachian Bear Rescue in Townsend, Tennessee! Celebrating 30 years of volunteer-powered bear rescue, ABR is doing incredible work saving orphan cubs, rehabilitating them with minimal human contact, and releasing healthy bears back into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They truly are the gold standard. On a beautiful Saturday we were invited on one of their exclusive behind-the-scenes tours (only four small groups were allowed that day, we felt so honored!). We finally got to see the secluded facility where the magic happens, tucked way back in the county so the bears stay wild and never get used to people. After the tour we sat down right here at our home with the brand-new Executive Director, Greg Greico. What a genuine, passionate guy, perfect for the job! We talked for over an hour about his wild journey into bear work, the history of ABR, why these bears matter so much, and what the future holds. You're in for a treat, this one is full of hope, history, and a few “wow” moments. In this episode of The Spotted Dog Podcast, we sit down with John Hanks, Large Carnivore Biologist with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, to unpack the historic 2025 Louisiana black bear hunting season. Not long ago, the Louisiana black bear was on the brink of disappearing. Today, thanks to decades of research, habitat work, and careful management, the population has rebounded enough to support a tightly regulated harvest. John walks us through how that recovery actually happened, what biologists are seeing across the state right now, and why this season marked such an important milestone for conservation. We talk population numbers, habitat expansion, how bears are being monitored, what surprised biologists during the 2025 season, and what the future holds for both hunters and the species itself. This is a behind-the-scenes look at modern wildlife management and a reminder that conservation success stories don't happen overnight.Whether you're a hunter, landowner, or someone who simply wants to understand how Louisiana's wildlife is managed, this conversation gives real insight into one of the state's greatest conservation comebacks.https://www.spotteddogsportinggoods.com/

Four months ago, I gave my first impressions of the new GoHunt apparel lineup. Now, after a full season of guiding black bear hunts in British Columbia, attending a shooting course, and weeks of scouting, I've put these pieces through serious abuse. In this video, I give you my honest, unsponsored, and unfiltered feedback on four key pieces: • Atmosphere Jacket • Blackrock Hoodie • Basin Hoodie • Approach Hoodie No marketing hype — just real-world results from months in the field. Some pieces impressed me, others fell flat. If you're considering GoHunt gear, this review will help you make a smarter decision before dropping your cash.

In this episode, Larry Weishuhn sits down in the wilds of West Texas with Jeff Johnston of the NRA and American Hunter. Recorded on a sprawling 40,000-acre cattle ranch near the Mexican border, the two discuss the unique challenges of hunting the "fan-tailed" Carmen Mountain Whitetail in the high desert. Larry and Jeff swap stories about the rugged terrain, the necessity of quality optics, and the diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert. The conversation then turns to a passionate discussion about the vital importance of the Second Amendment, the role of the NRA, and why unity among gun owners is critical for the future of the United States. [00:00] Intro & Sponsors: Larry introduces the show from the high-elevation desert of West Texas. [02:00] The Landscape: Discussing the "spine-filled" vegetation and diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert (Javelina, Mule Deer, Elk, Black Bear, and Quail). [04:15] The Carmen Mountain Whitetail: Larry explains the biology of this unique subspecies—smaller than a Coues deer but with a tail the size of a standard whitetail. [06:30] Hunting Stories: Jeff recounts his successful hunt and Larry jokes about "double drop tines." Mentions of Fred Eichler's success in camp. [09:45] Tactics & Gear: The importance of "glassing" in vast country. Discussion on optics (Stealth Vision), rifles, and the necessity of flat-shooting calibers (.270, 7x57, 6.5) and accurate ammo (Hornady). [14:20] The Second Amendment: A serious pivot to the state of gun rights. Larry emphasizes why the 2nd Amendment is the backbone of American freedom. [16:00] The NRA's Role: Why the NRA remains the strongest lobbying organization due to its membership base, not just money. [18:30] Call to Action: Larry urges listeners to write handwritten letters to legislators and maintain membership in gun rights organizations. [21:00] What's Next: Larry discusses his upcoming hunts in Oklahoma and Texas. "Everything here, for the most part, has got spines, stickers... if you look at our hands, you can probably see all the scratches." — Larry Weishuhn "To me, anything that scores 85 or better is one heck of a deer." — Larry Weishuhn on the Carmen Mountain Whitetail "Without the Second Amendment and our ability to own guns, this country will not exist in a relatively short period of time." — Larry Weishuhn This episode is brought to you by: DSC (Dallas Safari Club): Conservation, Education, and Advocacy. Spring black bear hunting is one of the most misunderstood and hardest hunts in the West. In this episode of the Rokcast, Jaden sits down with Joe Kondelis, founder of the American Bear Foundation, to break down what it actually takes to find and hunt black bears in the spring. From early failures and lost bears to dialing in habitat, green-up, and timing, Joe shares the hard lessons that turned frustration into long-term success in the bear woods. They dig into what makes good black bear country and how spot-and-stalk and still-hunting strategies change as spring progresses. The conversation also dives deep into black bear conservation and why hunter advocacy matters now more than ever. Joe explains Wyoming's bear quota system, groundbreaking research on bear movement and harvest vulnerability, and why mature boars are harder to kill than most hunters realize. They wrap up by talking utilizing bear meat, bear fat, and how bear hunters can use a ton of the animal. Plus, they talk about how organizations like the American Bear Foundation help protect future bear hunting opportunities. This is a practical conversation for anyone planning a spring bear hunt this winter, or wanting to better understand bears on the landscape. On this episode of the Kentucky Afield Podcast, we're joined by Dr. John Hast, Bear and Elk Program Coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, for an in-depth conversation on black bears and bear hunting in the Commonwealth. With Kentucky currently in the middle of its rifle season for bears, we're breaking down why the season is timed the way it is, the long-term goals of Kentucky's bear program, and how season dates help meet those management objectives. We also dive into the reasoning behind why baiting bears is not allowed in Kentucky, how weather conditions can influence bear movement and hunter success, and how shifting food sources impact bear behavior throughout the season. To wrap things up, Chase shares the story of harvesting his first-ever Kentucky black bear on public land during the October archery season. Whether you're a seasoned bear hunter or just curious about Kentucky's growing bear population, this episode offers valuable insight straight from the biologist helping lead the program.

Interview with Dennis Lindgren, CEO of Black Bear MineralsRecording date: 10th December 2025Black Bear Minerals (ASX:BKB) has completed a strategic transformation from lithium explorer to focused North American precious metals developer, acquiring the Shafter Silver Project in Texas for A$30 million whilst advancing the Independence Gold Project in Nevada. This repositioning positions the company at the intersection of exceptional resource grades, existing production infrastructure, and America's growing recognition of critical mineral supply vulnerabilities. The flagship Shafter Project hosts 17.6 million ounces at 289 grams per tonne silver in foreign resource estimates, ranking amongst the ASX's highest-grade silver resources. CEO Dennis Lindgren, formerly with South32 and Alcoa, emphasises the infrastructure advantage: "It's one of the highest grade silver projects on the ASX. It comes with about 150 million in estimated infrastructure and that includes existing underground workings, existing core sheds as well as historical data." This existing infrastructure—including underground workings, mill circuits, and processing facilities operational until 2013—potentially compresses development timelines by years compared to greenfield competitors.Near-term catalysts centre on JORC-compliant resource conversion targeted for the second half of 2026, supported by A$17 million working capital allocated for drilling programmes. Recent rock chip sampling has returned exceptional grades exceeding 3,000 g/t from near-surface areas outside the current resource footprint, whilst historical stockpile evaluation reveals grades averaging over 300 g/t, suggesting previous operators may have applied inappropriate cutoff grades or overlooked valuable mineralization.Beyond silver-focused historical operations, Black Bear's technical review has identified multicommodity potential including zinc, lead, vanadium, and gold across multiple locations. Lindgren noted: "We're picking up really good levels of zinc and lead that we would consider as targets to go forward with." This creates potential by-product credits that could materially improve project economics whilst expanding exploration vectors beyond current silver-equivalent resource calculations.Silver's designation as a US critical mineral fundamentally alters the strategic context surrounding domestic production projects. America produces approximately 30 million ounces annually whilst consuming over 210 million ounces—importing roughly 85% of requirements despite the metal's critical status for national security and economic competitiveness. Lindgren articulated the supply-demand imbalance: "Having another US domestic asset that can actually supply into those markets we think is something that's very attractive particularly with it being critical now."Jurisdictional advantages strengthen Black Bear's development pathway. Texas ranks within the top five global mining jurisdictions with 20% tax rates, partial permitting already in place, and strong community support in Presidio County. Proximity to major Mexican silver operations ensures access to experienced workforce and established supply chains.Portfolio diversification comes through Independence Gold Project in Nevada, hosting 419,000 ounces of near-surface heap-leachable gold at 0.4 g/t and 980,000 ounces of high-grade skarn mineralisation at 6.67 g/t. The company recently completed 5,000 metres of drilling exceeding planned programmes, with assay results expected in early 2026.Management's measured approach prioritises resource definition and JORC compliance over premature production planning, appropriate given recent acquisition timing. However, the infrastructure leverage and critical mineral designation create optionality for accelerated development should commodity fundamentals, government support, or strategic partnerships materialise. Investors should monitor JORC conversion progress, drilling results from both projects, and infrastructure assessment studies as key milestones determining whether Black Bear can validate its high-grade silver thesis and capitalise on structural supply deficits facing American consumers.Learn more: https://cruxinvestor.comSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Yes, there are black bears in Door County, but we don't yet know where the one that washed ashore in Egg Harbor came from. Myles Dannhausen Jr. talks to Debra Fitzgerald about that bear, but first they dig into the news that the U.S. Navy has cancelled contracts for four Constellation-class frigates being built by Fincantieri Marinette Marine with assistance from its Sturgeon Bay yard. What does it mean for local workers when a multi-billion dollar contract ends?
BLACK BEAR RESEARCH PROJECT IN OHIO Black bears were once a common occurrence in Ohio. In the late 1800's loss of habitat and unregulated harvest led to them being eliminated from Ohio. In recent years bear sights have become commonplace. Today we interview ODNR Wildlife Biologist, Katie Dennison. Katie gives us the basics on Bear biology and facts on preferred habitat. We get into the research project and how she and her team are conducting the study. It's early in the study but Katie provides us with some fascinating findings thus far. Vincent Mason stops by the studio with some of the craziest road stories Bobby’s heard in a while. He shares the wild story of his van losing a tire while going 70 mph, plus the time they hit a black bear and a hawk on back-to-back days out on the road.
