I have a love-hate relationship with interactive whiteboards. They have so much potential which I love, but too often they just get used as giant TVs. The interactivity part of the equation gets thrown out the window! So in this episode, I talk about the dos and don'ts of using these boards and how to help students use them constructively in the classroom. 1:35 - Why this is such a hot topic for me 5:42 - The “don'ts” of using interactive whiteboards 9:35 - The “dos” of using interactive whiteboards 12:43 - Why video modeling may work better than live modeling 15:37 - Some ways you can help your students use whiteboards effectively Grab the transcript, freebie and resource links at http://autismclassroomresources.com/episode144 Autism Classroom Resources' Free Resource Library... http://library.autismclassroomresources.com Want more information about the Special Educator Academy? As we get ready to head into the holiday season, we take this time to refresh and rejuvenate our spirits and spend time with family. Inevitably, we also use this time to check out some new sources of tech inspiration to prepare for the last half of the year. These shorter episodes I’m calling our “Tech the Halls” Series will highlight a few of my favorite tech apps and tools that I like to use to accent my lessons. Be on the lookout, we will also be launching a companion series on YouTube called “Tech Study: Extra Credit” where we will give you a personal tour from our perspective first hand where you can see the app in session. In this issue, I was reading the article, "Every Assessment Tells a Story," written by Fred Ende. In this article, Fred shares his design of Story Assessments as a form of evaluation design. His purpose for designing Story Assessments was to reduce student anxiety. http://k12science.net/Podcast/Podcast/Entries/2014/3/17_Middle_School_Science_Minute-Place-Famous_Scientists.html From the Twitterverse: #mschat every Thursday at 8:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. The best part of the story? Mirchandani is just 14 years old. It all started when Mirchandani, a student at Dorseyville Middle School near Pittsburgh, Pa., noticed that he was getting a lot more printed handouts in class than he used to in elementary school. He wondered how wasteful it was, and then discovered just how expensive ink is. At up to $75 an ounce, he points out, it's twice as expensive as Chanel No. 5 perfume. http://mashable.com/2014/03/28/save-money-change-fonts/ http://www.emerginginvestigators.org/ Resources: Paper Create all types of graph paper to print or use as a background for Interactive Whiteboards, presentations, etc. http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/ OR http://gridzzly.com/ Lingua.ly Learn Practice Read One free way to learn a new language.
