Push for climate education brings students hope for future

Several dozen young people wearing light blue T-shirts imprinted with “#teachclimate” filled a hearing room in the Minnesota Capitol in St. Paul in late February. The high school and college students and other advocates called on the Minnesota Youth Council, a liaison between young people and state lawmakers, to support a bill requiring schools to teach more about climate change. “Sometimes within like the youth community, it can be hard to hear from people, from older generations making decisions for you on an issue that is so near and dear to you,” said Lucia Everist, an Edina High School student pushing for the bill. In places that teach to standards formulated by the National Science Teachers Association, state governments, and other organizations, many kids learn about air quality, ecosystems, biodiversity, and land and water in Earth and environmental science classes. But students and advocates say that is insufficient. They are demanding districts, boards, and state lawmakers require more teaching about the planet's warming and would like it woven into more subjects. Some places are adding more instruction on the subject. In 2020, New Jersey required teaching climate change at all grade levels. Connecticut followed, then California. More than two dozen new measures across 10 states were introduced last year, according to the National Center for Science Education. Where some proposals require teaching the basic science and human causes of climate change, the Minnesota bill goes further, requiring state officials to guide schools on teaching climate justice, including the idea that the changes hit disadvantaged communities harder. The bill didn't advance in the 2023 session. This year, the Minnesota Youth Council supported the bill, but it's likely it won't pass and will be reintroduced next year. But students say being involved in the process gives them hope, despite legislative setbacks. “For me personally, I get a lot of hope from working with other young people and seeing that other people care about the same things and that, you know, we all kind of have each other's back working towards climate solutions,” said University of Minnesota freshman Libby Kramer. With Toni, his wife of forty years, he researches and documents stories about the nature, meaning, and unity of love for their multimedia project, Journeys to Love. The tale of their latest six summers, 100,000 miles, and 48 states traveling by Harley to diverse American cultures, communities, and lifestyles looking for love are currently being offered via their popular YouTube channel, recent TED talk, and to publishers via their upcoming books, Love: Your Seventh Sense, and A Boat, A Raft, A Bridge: The Discovery, Meaning, and Hope of Love in America. In this episode, Scotte shares a lot about how Toni and him started "Journeys to Love" with a "simple" question, how it has developed into finding the answer to the question, "What is Love?", and more of the research and stories behind all of this. These and other catastrophes were once thought to be the result of glacier lakes breaking up and depositing huge volumes of water across thousands of miles of land. New science now reveals evidence of multiple asteroid impacts, which devastated our planet, 12,000 to 14,000 years ago.The program also highlights the importance of sacred geometry and how ancient man utilized these tools to form megaliths and buildings left to us around the world.Randall Carlson is a master builder and architectural designer, teacher, geometrician, geomythologist, geological explorer and renegade scholar. Tests and the Rest: College Admissions Industry Podcast

The various versions of high school admissions tests may be even more confusing than those for college or graduate school. For the first in a series on HS admissions tests, Amy and Mike invited educator Christine Carroll to explain the role and structure of the High School Placement Test (HSPT). What are five things you will learn in this episode? Who takes the High School Placement Test (HSPT)? What kind of high schools use the HSPT, and how do they use it? What is tested on the HSPT? What kind of students will do well on the HSPT? How does the HSPT differ from other admissions tests? MEET OUR GUEST Christine Carroll, the owner and lead instructor at Tutoring By Christine, has been teaching for over 25 years. She started her teaching career in Catholic School, which is where she began preparing students for the TACHS and SAT standardized exams. Christine moved onto teaching at a private high school and then as a public school teacher.  She designed and implemented the SHSAT prep program at her public middle school. She has also written curricula for the science department at her middle school, where she sits on the School Leadership Team. She is the recipient of the 2012 Senator Lanza Teacher of the Year Award. Christine is a lead teacher at the Staten Island Zoo for the prestigious NYC Urban Advantage program. She has also worked as an adjunct professor for a local college for 6 years teaching science and education classes.  She is a member of the National Science Teachers Association and the Learning Disabilities Association of America as well as the National Test Prep Association. Christine has been trained in the Orton-Gillingham methodology. She has always maintained ties with both the private and public communities. Christine contributes to her community by volunteering at various venues on Staten Island, most notably she leads an annual backpack drive for homeless students. At least once a week I have a client tell me that they wanted to become a veterinarian when they were young, but never pursued the career. They just didn't think they had what it took. There are so many tweens and teens who are starting to wrestle with the question ‘what do you want to do when you grow up?' Many may entertain the idea of becoming a doctor of veterinary medicine but they also have doubts about what does it take? Could I handle the sights, sounds and smells of being around animals? What options are available if I like science but want to do more than tend to the traditional dogs, cats, horses and birds? How do I go about get hands on experience? Dr. Chris Carpenter is the founder and director of an amazing program called ‘Vet Set Go' that incorporates his degrees in veterinary medicine and his membership in the National Science Teachers Association. It is unique and a great way for tweens and teens to explore all the veterinary medicine can be. Questions or comments? Email Dr. Cruz at: thepetdoctor@petliferadio.com.
