Norm continues eviscerating Beto O'Rourke in the second hour. He then turns his focus to how we should go about the conversation of what to do about guns in America. Norm's law partner, Kevin Smith, recommended to Norm that he read Nicholas Kristoff's piece in the New York Times. Norm admits that, under normal circumstances, he wouldn't take such a suggestion, especially given the topical nature of the subject matter. But one of life's great pleasures is loving and respecting people who come standard issue with opinions incongruent to one's own. Norm obliges and delivers an epic shadow cross-examination reminiscent of his long form episodes. He is then joined by Ira Judelson, Bail Bondsman to the Stars. Norm and Ira go way back. The two talk bail reform in New York, subway violence, and new trends in executive protection. Like, share, and subscribe to the best in the business. Leave us a review. Norm is live every weekday on WICC600 AM from 12pm ET to 2pm ET. Stream Norm live at https://www.wicc600.com/#. Follow @PattisPodcast on Twitter.
Harvey Weinstein, Robert Durst, Anna "the Manhattan Madam" Gristina, Lil' Wayne, and Lawrence Taylor. The common thread is New York's most prominent bail bondsman, Ira Judelson. Mr. "30 Million on the Street" and author of recent book, "The Fixer: The Notorious Life of a Front-Page Bail Bondsman", Ira Judelson joins Law and Legitimacy to discuss the fundamentals of the bond business—what a bondsman does, what the bond market is, the function of "cut slips", and the nature of a bondsman's relationship to his client—and the toll of a life devoted to justice amid the most challenging legal circumstances. I have known Ira for more than a decade. He is as real as it gets. He's tough. He's reliable. And he's courageous. But beyond the gripping anecdotes, a few of which he shares herein, Ira's strong moral compass is likely his most compelling attribute. Ira is a devoted husband and father. Expect the pride he takes in these roles to leak right through your speakers. Perhaps it is that devotion to and pride for his family that inform the success that Ira has become in the bondsman field, and why this episode is such a fit within the theme of legitimacy. What will also leak—rather, flood—through your speakers is our shared hate for the other's collegiate football loyalty. Was I able to get this Buckeye to recite the Big Blue credo? This is Ira Judelson, Bail Bondsman to the Stars. Listen and enjoy. Remember to leave us a 5-star rating wherever you find Law and Legitimacy. Ira Judelson is handling the bail package for Conor McGregor following the misdemeanor assault incident that took place at Barclay's Center. Ira gives us the inside scoop on what led to the incident and why Conor is a stand up guy. Danny's friend Mitch Baruchowitz, Managing Partner of Merida Capital Partners (in which Danny is an investor) drops by to discuss different innovations, legal hurdles, financial questions, and moral conundrums that come with the legalization of cannabis, and some of the industries that are putting up hurdles on the federal level while states take a shot. And speaking of states, Danny thinks the Supreme Court could make it possible for sports gambling to come to a location near you. He and Mitch discuss the 10th Amendment and Ira shares some of the reluctance from the alleged family businesses that aren't a fan of the potential change.
“Who wouldn’t want to be a gangster?” Gerard Marrone, our guest this week, says this on his YouTube docuseries The Street Attorney. “I went the other way. I became a lawyer. I represent the made guys and the bosses. They get locked up, I get them out,” he tells us. Join us for this absorbing interview. He’ll be talking about everything from his favorite kinds of cases, the reasons some mob cases are federal and some aren’t, and growing up in Queens. At just 21 years old and working on being a professional boxer, Gerard was shot in the back at a party protecting his sister. Initially told he’d never walk again, he beat the odds and now walks right into the court room. He’ll talk about how his personal experience of getting shot has turned into empathy for his clients, which can be a real asset for his attorney business. Here’s what else we’ll cover in this episode. New Bail Reform Start-Up Promise With three million of venture capital investment from Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and First Round Capital, Promise aims to reform the bail industry and tackle some of the injustices around arrests and sentencing. Ira talks about the good, bad, and ugly of these kinds of reforms while Danny dives deep into the racial implications of everything from sentencing to bail costs, noting that studies show that black Americans face three times the punishment and penalties. Bank of America’s High Frequency Trading “Dark Pool” Settlement Slapped with a $42 Million-dollar settlement, Bank of America admitted to “systematically misleading clients” between 2008 and 2013. Danny breaks down the significance of this legal decision, and the big role Bernie Madoff played in this scandal. Ira points out the similarities between mobsters and Wall Street brokers. Are they both really just bookies? Here’s How To Listen You’ll love this fascinating full interview with Gerard Marrone. Ira and Danny have their usual fun tackling dark pool trading, bail reform, pop culture events, and more. You won’t want to miss this episode. _____________________________________________ About BailStreet BailStreet is where the worlds of crime and finance meet. I have a special request this week: share this episode with every curious person in your life. The conversation, with a 26-year old investor named Ali Hamed, serves as an example of what’s possible when you think creatively. Ali views the world with a fresh set of eyes, and has already become an expert at identifying new investment opportunities where others have not. As the second prodigy 26 year old in as many weeks on the podcast, these young guns are making me feel like an ancient 32 year old. We talk a lot about “alpha” in our world, earning returns better than the market. But the key word in that last sentence isn’t alpha, it’s earning. Hopefully you, like me, will use this conversation as a reminder of what it takes to earn differentiated returns. It’s not just the hard work, but also the mindset. We explore many examples of how to create new investment opportunities, from rolling up Instagram accounts, to financing perishable fruit like watermelons, to heavy machinery software. Please enjoy this special conversation with Ali Hamed. Follow him and his partners. And then go figure out how to earn success yourself in whatever it is you do by helping other people solve problems with empathy. For more episodes go to InvestorFieldGuide.com/podcast. This week’s episode is very unique. It is the first episode devoted to bonds, just not the kind of bonds you are used to. My guest is Ira Judelson, who is the leading bail bondsman in New York City. I met Ira through my friend and former podcast guest Danny Moses, who is also a part of this conversation. I have always had a passion for understanding how different businesses work. In this case, this week we are exploring a different business, but also a different world. Ira’s story is larger than life. He is as authentic and hard working as they come. In both his book and this conversation, there is a lot about family, loyalty, and hard work—principles which really resonate with me. You’ll emerge from this hour with an appreciation of hustle and what it takes to get ahead. I can’t stop thinking about our discussion on how sources of power in any career morph through time, a framework that can help anyone think about their work and where to apply effort. The conversation goes all over the place, but suffice it to say we discuss bond collateral, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and DMX—and that is but one small fraction. Please enjoy my conversation with Ira Judelson and Danny Moses. In this installment of Slate's podcast about work, host Adam Davidson of NPR's Planet Money and the New York Times Magazine talks with veteran bail bondsman Ira Judelson. "I am the bank for people that get incarcerated," Judelson says, describing the complexity of his job in simple terms. "I am, on the street, a legal loan shark. I bail people out. I put up their bond to get them out of jail." Judelson discusses his daily routine, the role that trust plays in his work relationships, and the famous clients that inspired the newspaper stories that adorn his office wall, including Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Ja Rule, Robert Durst, and Lindsay Lohan. Judelson gives Davidson a tour of that wall, defends his use of a flip phone, explains how he earns a living from posting bail bonds, and reveals his passion project, an app he's developing called JammedUp that helps people who get, well, jammed up.
