This is: [Cross-post] Is the Fermi Paradox due to the Flaw of Averages?, published by Aryeh Englander on January 18, 2023 on LessWrong. [This article is copy-pasted from the Lumina blog, very lightly edited for LessWrong.] Where is everybody?— Enrico Fermi The omnipresence of uncertainty is part of why making predictions and decisions is so hard. We at Lumina advocate treating uncertainty explicitly in our models using probability distributions. Sadly this is not yet as common as it should be. A recent paper “Dissolving the Fermi Paradox” (2018) is a powerful illustration of how including uncertainty can transform conclusions on the fascinating question of whether our Earth is the only place in the Universe harboring intelligent life. The authors, Anders Sandberg, Eric Drexler and Toby Ord (whom we shall refer to as SDO), show elegantly that the apparent paradox is simply the result of the mistake of ignoring uncertainty, what Sam L. Savage calls the Flaw of Averages. In this article, we review their article and link to an Analytica version of their model that you can explore. The Fermi Paradox Enrico Fermi. From Wikimedia commons. One day in 1950, Enrico Fermi, the Nobel prize-winning builder of the first nuclear reactor, was having lunch with a few friends in Los Alamos. They were looking at a New Yorker cartoon of cheerful aliens emerging from a flying saucer. Fermi famously asked “Where is everybody?”. Given the vast number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy and the likely development of life and extraterrestrial intelligence, how come no ETs have come to visit or at least been detected? This question came to be called the “Fermi Paradox”. Ever since, it has bothered those interested in the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence and whether we are alone in the Universe. The Flaw of Averages on Steroids Dr. Sam Savage who coined the term “Flaw of Averages” Sam L. Savage, in his book, The Flaw of Averages, shows how ignoring uncertainty and just working with a single mean or “most likely” value for each uncertain quantity can lead to misleading results. To illustrate how dramatically this approach can distort your conclusions, SDO offer a toy example. Suppose there are nine factors that multiplied together give the probability of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) arising on any given star. If you use a point estimate of 0.1 for each factors, you could infer that there is a 10−9probability of any given star harboring ETI. There are about 1011 stars in the Milky Way, so the probability that no star other than our own has a planet harboring intelligent life would be extremely small, (1−10−9)100B≈3.7×10−44. On the other hand, suppose that, based on what we know, each factor could be anywhere between 0 and 0.2, and assign a uniform uncertainty over this interval, using the probability distribution, Uniform(0, 0.2). If you combine these distributions probabilistically, using Monte Carlo simulation for example, the mean of the result is 0.21 – over 5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times more likely! The Drake Equation Frank Drake, a radio astronomer who worked on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), tried to formalize Fermi's estimate of the number of ETIs. He suggested that we can estimate N, the number of detectable, intelligent civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy from what is now called the “Drake equation”. It is sometimes referred to as the “second most-famous equation in science (after E= mc2)”: Frank Drake (1930-2022). Ray thinks that Calvin Austin III can be a productive part of the offense next year. Ray thinks the Steelers can get to 40 million in cap space this offseason! "They'll have plenty of money in free agency to do what they want to do." See something, say something... We go over a wild hypothetical. Sports talk radio is fun! Notes: Anthropic's Claude improves on ChatGPT but still suffers from limitations | TechCrunch (01:10) A startup co-founded by ex-OpenAI employees called Anthropic has raised over $700 million in funding to date, and has developed an AI system similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT.System is called Claude and is accessible through a Slack integration as part of a closed beta Developed with a technique call constitutional AI The company explains:This learning is a principle based approach  to aligning AI systems with human intentions, letting AI similar to ChatGPT respond to questions using a simple set of principles as a guide. Anthropic started with a list of around ten private principles that formed the constitution in the AI.   The company says the principles are grounded in the concepts of beneficence (maximizing positive impact), nonmaleficence (avoiding giving harmful advice) and autonomy (respecting freedom of choice). Claude is fed an enormous number of examples of text from the web, and learns how likely words are to occur based on patterns such as the semantic context of surrounding text. Therefore it can hold an open-ended conversation, tell jokes and be philosophical, etc.  Yann Dubois, a Ph.D. student at Stanford's AI Lab, also did a comparison of Claude and ChatGPT, writing that Claude “generally follows closer [to] what it's asked for” but is “less concise,” as it tends to explain what it said and ask how it can further help. Claude isn't perfect, however. It's susceptible to some of the same flaws as ChatGPT, including giving answers that aren't in keeping with its programmed constraints.Flaw example: asking the system in Base64, an encoding scheme that represents binary data in ASCII format, bypasses its built-in filters for harmful content. Anthropic says that it plans to refine Claude and potentially open the beta to more people down the line. The first CRISPR gene-edited meat is coming—and this is the CEO making sci-fi a reality | FastCompany (11:09) Joshua March is the CEO of SciFi Foods who are using CRISPR to hasten its advances. The gene-editing technology According to the Good Food Institute, there are 152 cultivated meat companies as of the end of 2022, operating in 29 countries.SciFi Foods is different because of the fact they are using CRISPR March got into the cultivated meats a reality because of these companies:“I honestly became pretty disenchanted with the companies in the space and all the arm waving about how the costs would be solved.” For their meat creation they have a simple process that sounds like natural selection:The key is engineering cycles that enable rapid prototyping.  The best cell lines will go on to create the next round of modifications. Cost parity with traditional meat is every lab grown meat founder's goal, one that sets a seemingly unattainable target. 2022 - the average price of ground beef was $4.81/lb SciFi is betting that the only way to economically scale cultivated meat is with CRISPR, and that by making iterative tweaks they can create dependable cell lines with rich, meat-y flavor. CEO March stated, “We have an eventual target of $1 per burger at commercial scale.” Once harvested, beef cells will be formulated into a blended burger that is mostly like the plant-based burgers you may already know—soy protein and coconut oil.Adding a small percentage of SciFi cells (5% to 20%, according to March) to give “beefy” notes. According to the Good Food Institute, $2.6 billion has been invested in these alternative proteins since 2010.  ISS astronauts are building objects not possible on Earth | Popular Science (20:49) Aboard the International Space Station (ISS) right now is a metal box, the size of a desktop PC tower.Inside, a nozzle is helping build little test parts that aren't possible to make on Earth.  Fail under Earth's gravity. The Box is scheduled to spend 45 days aboard the ISS The MIT group behind this process explains it'll be the “first results for a really novel process in microgravity.” It involves taking a flexible silicone skin, shaped like the part it will eventually create, and filling it with a liquid resin.  Like how you fill a balloon with air, this will just be resin The resin is sensitive to ultraviolet light. Once UV light reaches the resin it'll cure and stiffen, hardening into a solid structure. Remove the skin and you have your part If everything is successful, the ISS will ship some experimental parts back to Earth for the MIT researchers to test. Ensuring that the parts they've made are structurally sound. The benefit of building parts like this in orbit is that Earth's single most fundamental stressor—the planet's gravity—is no longer a limiting factor. If the experiment is successful, you would be able to produce test parts that are too long to make on Earth. Long-term thinking, if astronauts can make very long parts in space, those pieces could  speed up large construction projects, such as the structures of space habitats. used to form the structural frames for solar panels or radiators Another benefit if you can make stuff in space means less things you need to pack into your rocket Every pound of cargo can still cost over $1,000 to put into space. Ultimately the MIT group wants to “make this manufacturing process available and accessible to other researchers.”   3D printing reaches new heights with two-story home | Nasdaq (25:39) A 3D printer weighing more than 12 tons is creating what is believed to be the first 3D-printed, two-story home in the United States.Producing layers of concrete to build the 4,000-square-foot home in Houston. Construction will take a total of 330 hours of printing The project is a two-year collaboration by Hannah, Peri 3D Construction and Cive, a construction engineering company. Hikmat Zerbe, Cive's head of structural engineering, hopes the innovative technique can one day help more quickly and cheaply build multi-family homes. Zerbe talks on the newest for the construction industry:“Traditional construction, you know the rules, you know the game, you know the material properties, the material behavior. In here, everything is new … The material is new, although concrete is an old material in general, but 3D printing concrete is something new.” Since the printer does all the heavy lifting, less workers are needed at the construction site. Gut Bacteria Affect Brain Health | Neuroscience News (31:39) A growing pile of evidence indicates that the tens of trillions of microbes that normally live in our gut microbiome have far-reaching effects on how our bodies function. Produce vitamins,  Help digest food, Prevent the overgrowth of harmful bacteria  Regulate the immune system According to researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, findings from a new study suggests that the gut microbiome also plays a key role in the health of our brains. To determine whether the gut microbiome may be playing a causal role, the researchers altered the gut microbiomes of mice.Mice were genetically modified to more likely develop Alzheimer's-like brain damage and cognitive impairment. The mice were given a course of antibiotics at 2 weeks of age, permanently changing the composition of bacteria in their microbiomes. For male mice, it reduced the amount of brain damage evident at 40 weeks of age. No significant effect on neurodegeneration in female mice. From other studies we know that male and female brains respond differently to different stimuli. For instance visual stimuli. The composition of our brains are different as well. Further experiments linked three specific short-chain fatty acids — compounds produced by certain types of gut bacteria as products of their metabolism — to neurodegeneration. Were scarce in mice with gut microbiomes altered by antibiotic treatment They appeared to trigger neurodegeneration by activating immune cells in the bloodstream, which in turn activated immune cells in the brain to damage brain tissue.  The findings suggest a new approach to preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases by modifying the gut microbiome with antibiotics, probiotics, specialized diets or other means.

The old Romans had a saying: Who watches the watchmen? We've used the phrase for generations to question and challenge authority. But now it looks like we will have to change the old saying to: Who watches the watchmen who watch the watchmen? We're talking about the recent disclosure that, when former House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes and his assistant Kash Patel uncovered massive Department of Justice abuses in the Russia probe, they suddenly found themselves the targets of a Department of Justice probe. As shocking as this news was, what was even more shocking was that special counsel John Durham, who was supposed to uncover all these abuses, has done nothing of the sort, which is why in this episode we ask: Why didn't Durham stick to his mandate—and where is Durham anyway? ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Family Theater was a dramatic anthology radio show which aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System in the United States from February 13, 1947, to September 11, 1957. The show was produced by Family Theater Productions, a film and radio studio extension of the Family Rosary Crusade founded by the Holy Cross Priest, Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, to promote family prayer. The motto of these Holy Cross Family Ministries is, "The family that prays together, stays together." The program had no commercial sponsor, yet Father Peyton, CSC arranged for many of Hollywood's stars in film and radio at the time to appear. In its ten-year run, well-known actors, and actresses, including James Stewart, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Raymond Burr, Jane Wyatt, Charlton Heston, Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, Gene Kelly, William Shatner, and Chuck Connors, appeared as announcers, narrators, or stars. A total of 540 episodes were produced. The program featured not only religious stories but half-hour adaptations of literary works such as A Tale of Two Cities, Moby-Dick and Don Quixote Listen to our radio station Old Time Radio https://link.radioking.com/otradio Listen to other Shows at My Classic Radio https://www.myclassicradio.net/ Podcast Service I Recommend https://redcircleinc.grsm.io/entertainmentradio7148 Remember that times have changed, and some shows might not reflect the standards of today's politically correct society. Dr. Diana Mercado Marmarosh is a family medicine physician, clinic medical director, chief medical officer and ADHD life coach for Physicians. She used to have 200 open charts and a graveyard of unfinished projects, but all has changed. In the last year she has made it her mission help more than 50 physicians enhance their zone of genius by creating systems that allow them to leave work at work and obtain freedom of time. In this episode: Diana shares the story of her diagnosis of ADHD and now it has led her to where she is today. She shares an honest, heartfelt journey through seeing it initially as something that was a flaw and should be hidden to learning to see it as just a circumstance that she could control. We discuss her transition from leaving the medical community where she trained to ultimately become a medical director and medical society leader elsewhere in the state of Texas. We talk through how the things that led to burnout in her career were simply the price a doctor had to pay in order to do the things she loved and live the lifestyle she wanted. Her mindset changed after being coached in a community of women physicians and this led to her most recent reset! ADHD Hacks for Physicians: 1. Planning (listen in for the specific planning tools) 2. List daily what you are for! 3. Write down 3 things you want like they have already happened. 4. Decide everything has a home. 5. Charting: Begin with the end in mind and control the environment during your workday in a way that supports getting your chart done right after the visit (it is possible!) 6. Diana shares an amazing list of EMR charting hacks in the last third of the podcast. Get your pen and be ready to write them down! She teaches us how to work smarter not harder! Everyone has something of value to say in the massive conversation we call 'ART' that has been taking place since humans began. Sometimes though, our perceived flaws, prevent us from finding our voice to express what is inside us, stopping us from participating in this conversation. Being different/flawed is an asset. This is a powerful conversation about how to find our way to seeing our flaws for what they really are, our superpowers, so that we can bust out and be a part of this universal conversation.  We all have the right to call ourselves artists even without degrees - but with that comes a responsibility and Susan tells us what she feels those responsibilities are - this was one of the deepest and most significant explanations of this I have ever heard and I cant wait to hear how it landed for you. Please find the post about her episode on Instagram @kateshepherdcreative or @thecreativegeniuspodcast and leave a comment sharing what came up for you when she said this!Susan speaks directly to the listener who is yearning to take the next step into a life as a full time artist. Practical thoughtful mentoring type things, that are enormously helpful. There is some in depth homework including two weeks worth of FREE WORKSHEETS you can do at home to help you find out what "flaws" are holding you back and what your superpowers actually are so that you can begin to say what you came here to say in this life. Powerful stuff. ABOUT SUSAN LOGORECISusan Logoreci, a wildly successful commercial and public artist, has an eye condition (Strabismus) that almost prevented her from being able to make art at all. And paradoxically, as we'll hear, was the very thing that has led her to be the artist she has become. Her drawings have been seen in Art in America, the Los Angeles Times, Harper's Magazine, as well as many other periodicals. She has drawings in several collections including the U.S. State Department, City National Bank, Creative Artist's Agency, Marriott and Hilton Hotels, Los Angeles Metro, Los Angeles County Arts Commission and in several law and urban design firms. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She has also completed several public projects in hospitals, light rail stations and airports. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Her art comes down to this: she wants the viewer to feel the delight and wonder of places and at the same time be inspired to take care of them and always be making them better. WHAT WE TALK ABOUT -Where creative impulses come from-The conflict between realism and abstraction in art-Intentionally looking for new ways to see things-The eye condition she has (Strabismus) causes her to not see three dimensionally this “failure” to interpret every day life the way the rest of us do led her to not only see the world but also create art in a way that is completely unique to her. The things we think are our impediments, are pointing us to our superpowers-Accessing your ‘inner delinquent' to unleash creativity-seeing differently as an artist is an asset - how can you use it-The way you are different is an asset - and how you can use it. -Accessible tips and suggestions for getting grants and finding your path to becoming a public artist - her absolutely brilliant idea for the person who wants to get into making public art-How she designed her largest public art project a staggering 10,000 square foot with 28 wall pieces in Phoenix airport!-The collective amnesia that happens to us between childhood and adulthood  around creativity. What she thinks are the causes of it, and the ways we can change it.Challenge to all listeners! If you felt a little something inside you perk up when Susan was talking about getting grants to do public art like on the utility boxes - challenge - go Find out how public art is governed in your area and apply! And join the creative genius family on facebook and share your experience, learnings and journey with it

So as leaves continue to change across the northern United States with the turning of the seasons, researchers are working to better understand how climate change may be affecting fall colors—changes that may affect the bottom line for those tourism-rich areas. But to tease out the factors involved with the timing of peak leaf color, the researchers need data on when leaves started to change color, when they arrive at their peak color, and when the leaf-peeping season ends. Unfortunately, satellite imagery showing leaf color is only available dating back to the year 2000—and so Stephanie Spera of the University of Richmond is trying to get data in some unconventional ways. Spera and colleagues are engaging in a massive citizen-science project, asking for tourist snapshots of Acadia National Park that show the colors of fall. While they'll accept your cellphone selfies, they're especially interested in older, pre-digital images—the sort of vacation pictures that might be in your family albums, or in shoe boxes in an elderly relative's attic. Adding those images to their data set, she says, will both help them to validate the satellite data and to extend the boundaries of their data set outwards. Heather Goldstone, host and executive producer of Living Lab Radio on WCAI, joins Ira to talk about the project and how listeners can participate.   The ‘Grandfather' Of The Voyager Mission Retires 45 years ago, the Voyagers 1 and 2 spacecraft were launched into the cosmos from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Since then, they've traveled over 14 billion miles from Earth, on a grand tour of our solar system, and beyond. The mission is still running, making Voyager 1 the farthest human-built artifact from Earth. Even before launch, scientists and engineers were hard at work planning and designing the mission. Last week, NASA announced the retirement of Dr. Ed Stone, who some called the ‘grandfather' of the mission. Dr. Stone shepherded the Voyager program as its project scientist for 50 full years. In this conversation from 2013, just after Voyager 1 had entered interstellar space, Ira spoke with Dr. Stone for a status update on the mission.   A Flaw in Human Judgment: How Making Decisions Isn't As Objective As You Think If two people are presented with the same set of facts, they will often draw different conclusions. For example, judges often dole out different sentences for the same case, which can lead to an unjust system. This unwanted variability in judgments in which we expect uniformity is what psychologist Daniel Kahneman calls “noise.” The importance of thoughtful decision-making has come in stark relief during the pandemic and in the events leading up to the January 6th insurrection. Ira talks with Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman about the role of ‘noise' in human judgment, his long career studying cognitive biases, and how systematic decision-making can result in fewer errors. Kahneman is the co-author of “Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment,” along with Oliver Sibony and Cass R. Sunstein, now available in paperback.   Frenemies, Lovers, And The Fate Of The Cosmos: Our Galaxy Tells All Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is 13.6 billion years old, all-knowing, and a little sassy. It has a rich social life of friends, frenemies, and even love interests—all other galaxies in the local group, including the stunning Andromeda. And the Milky Way is a little disappointed that we've stopped telling as many stories about it. Or at least, that's how folklorist and astronomer Dr. Moiya McTier imagines the galaxy's personality when writing her new book, The Milky Way: An Autobiography of Our Galaxy. The book stretches from the beginning of the universe to the birth of our planet, and then on to the eventual theoretical end of the cosmos. Along the way, we learn both the science of how stars form and galaxies collide, and the many stories and myths humans have told about these bodies throughout our relatively brief lives. McTier joins Ira to tell all (on behalf of the Milky Way), and explain the importance of story in scientific knowledge and discovery.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

The Philadelphia Eagles improve to 8-0 on the season after beating the 1-6-1 Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football. But did the Eagles display the one weakness that could keep them from a title in 2022? It might be time to bury the Las Vegas Raiders and Green Bay Packers if they can't get on track in Week 9. The Seahawks and Cardinals are playing completely opposite brands of football and that bodes well for Seattle in Arizona.
