Reeder, Wolfe, and Wasche came to Wahpeton during the boomtown years and became very wealthy. They envisioned the civilizing influence of a massive brick opera house on the corner of Dakota Avenue, the main street of the rowdy frontier town. Key to the venture were several railroad lines running daily to cities where acclaimed dramatic and musical acts were based. Entertainers and audiences could arrive and depart on tracks behind the building.

Behind every high-performance environment are people, personalities, and decisions that shape outcomes. This week on the Science for Sport Podcast, Richard Graves is joined by former England international and Premier League defender Warren Barton, speaking from California. Warren reflects on a career that spanned very different eras of elite football, from coming through non-league and the famously demanding culture of Wimbledon's “Crazy Gang”, to becoming a record signing at Newcastle United during the Entertainers era. Across the conversation, Warren offers a rare, first-hand perspective on the psychology of professional sport: rejection, resilience, team identity, leadership, and how elite environments shape behaviour. The discussion also moves into modern high-performance sport, exploring how man-management, culture, and trust still sit alongside data, technology, and sports science. Warren shares thoughtful insights on coaching, communication, player wellbeing, and why asking an athlete how they feel still matters just as much as what the numbers say. A wide-ranging, honest conversation that will resonate with practitioners working in elite sport, as well as those interested in the human side of performance. In this episode you will learn How early rejection and non-academy pathways can shape resilience and long-term success Why strong team culture and shared identity can create psychological advantages over more talented opponents Lessons from Wimbledon's “Crazy Gang” environment and what modern teams can still learn from it How elite managers like Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, and Sir Bobby Robson differed in leadership and man-management Why man-management remains central to performance, even in data-rich environments How elite players and coaches balanced intuition, experience, and emerging sports science practices The importance of trust, togetherness, and players “having each other's backs” in high-pressure environments Where modern football may be losing connection with basic human communication Warren's perspective on technology, VAR, and how decision-making affects the athlete and fan experience How coaches can better integrate data with athlete feedback and lived experience About Warren Barton Warren Barton is a former England international footballer who played at the highest level of English football during the 1990s. His career included spells at Wimbledon and Newcastle United, where he became part of Kevin Keegan's iconic “Entertainers” side and captained the club during one of its most influential Premier League eras. Since retiring from playing, Warren has built a career in broadcasting and coaching, working extensively in the United States as a football analyst and pundit, including coverage of major international tournaments. He holds his UEFA Pro Licence and continues to work across elite football, combining practical experience with a deep understanding of performance, psychology, and leadership. Tudor Christmas didn't just sound like gentle carols, it was bold, noisy, and spectacular. In this episode of my Tudor Christmas Advent series, we step beyond singing and into the vibrant world of Tudor Christmas music, the instruments, entertainers, and soundscape that filled great halls, courtyards, streets, and chambers during the festive season. This isn't church music. This is feasting, dancing, misrule, and display. You'll discover: - Why loud instruments like shawms and sackbuts dominated festive evenings - How pipes, tabors, and drums drove dancing and revelry - Which softer instruments — like viols, rebecs, and lutes — were played later in the evening - Who provided the music, from court musicians and household minstrels to the city waits - And why Henry VIII himself was at the heart of Tudor Christmas music-making If you'd like to explore Tudor music even further, I recommend my interview with historian, musician, and historical instrument maker Jane Moulder, which I've linked here: https://youtu.be/07xLwzchEqs Question for you: Which Tudor instrument would you most like to hear played live? #TudorChristmas #TudorMusic #TudorHistory #EarlyMusic #HenryVIII #ChristmasHistory #MusicHistory

In this episode, I talk about why so many entertainers fall apart once the spotlight goes away. They look strong when the cameras are on, but that strength comes from the applause, not from inside. When the attention stops, their identity breaks because it was never built on their own structure. I break down why this matters for all of us, even if you're not in the spotlight yet—or never plan to be. It's a reminder to build who you are from the inside, not from what the world gives you. Show Notes: [01:58]#1 They have no substance. [10:51]#2 Your spotlight or the spotlight becomes your identity. [17:34]#3 You identify more by how other people see you than how you see yourself. In part 2 of our series on the 5th house in astrology we look at examples of famous people that have the ruler of the Ascendant in the fifth house in their birth chart, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim. The fifth house is traditionally associated with a wide range of topics in astrology such as children, creativity, pleasure, romance, sex and sexuality, games, and good fortune. In ancient astrology, the Ascendant was sometimes called the helm of the ship of the native's life, and the ruler of the Ascendant was said to be the captain. The house where the captain of the chart is located can tell you a lot about where the life is being directed, and in this episode we explore what happens when the life is directed towards the topics of the fifth house. Over the course of the episode, we explore more than 50 example charts of famous people who have the ruler of the Ascendant in the fifth house in order to demonstrate how this placement can play out in a number of different ways. Some of the charts we look at include those of actors, directors, musicians, comedians, athletes, writers, artists, and more. Through this survey, we are able to see many different concrete manifestations of the fifth house archetype, and develop a more well-rounded and grounded understanding of its meaning. This is the second of a three-part series on the fifth house, which is itself part of our larger series where I've been doing a deep dive on the twelve houses in astrology. In the next episode in this series we will explore the meaning of the ruler of the fifth house in each of the twelve houses, showing how the topics of the fifth house can be exported into other areas of a person's life. This is episode 507 of The Astrology Podcast. Today, I'm flipping it and showing you how white America moves differently and why. Even though these athletes and entertainers are famous everywhere, they don't get held up the same way. I'm breaking it down so we can all understand the real reason behind that. Show Notes: [01:35]#1 Standards. [08:18]#2 The more widespread valuing of substances. In this episode of Enrich Your Future, Andrew and Larry Swedroe discuss Larry's new book, Enrich Your Future: The Keys to Successful Investing. In this series, they discuss Chapter 35: Mad Money.LEARNING: Investors are naive, and Cramer is an entertainer, not a financial advisor who adds value. “Do not confuse information with value-added information. If you know something because it was in the newspaper, everyone else knows it as well. So it has no value.”Larry Swedroe In this episode of Enrich Your Future, Andrew and Larry Swedroe discuss Larry's new book, Enrich Your Future: The Keys to Successful Investing. The book is a collection of stories that Larry has developed over 30 years as the head of financial and economic research at Buckingham Wealth Partners to help investors. You can learn more about Larry's Worst Investment Ever story on Ep645: Beware of Idiosyncratic Risks.Larry deeply understands the world of academic research and investing, especially risk. Today, Andrew and Larry discuss Chapter 35: Mad Money.Chapter 35: Mad MoneyIn this chapter, Larry explains why investment advice from so-called market experts is often worthless. The infamous Jim CramerJim Cramer, a former hedge fund manager, has become one of the most recognizable faces in the investment world. He dispenses rapid-fire investment advice on the show “Mad Money.” Since it premiered in March 2005, it has been one of CNBC's most-watched shows. But has his advice been as successful for the investors who follow it? Larry shares a couple of research studies that answer this question. It pays more to invest in an S&P than in Cramer's fundCramer manages a portfolio that invests in many of the stock recommendations he makes on TV. Established in August 2001 with approximately $3 million, the Action Alerts PLUS (AAP) portfolio has been the centerpiece of Cramer's media company, TheStreet, which sells his financial advice, giving subscribers in the millions access to each trade the portfolio makes ahead of time. Jonathan Hartley and Matthew Olson, authors of the 2018 study “Jim Cramer's Mad Money Charitable Trust Performance and Factor Attribution,” examined the AAP portfolio's historical performance. Their study covered the period from August 1, 2001, the AAP portfolio's inception, through December 31, 2017. The study found that the fund returned a total of 97%. During that same period, an investment in the S&P would have returned 204%.No real stock-picking skill, just entertainmentIn another study, “How Mad Is Mad Money?”, Paul Bolster, Emery Trahan, and Anand Venkateswaran examined Cramer's buy and sell recommendations for the period from July 28, 2005, through December 31, 2008. They also constructed a portfolio of his recommendations and compared it to a market index. The researchers came to three key conclusions:Investors were paying attention, as the stocks he recommended had abnormal returns of almost 2% on the day following his recommendations. The returns...
in this episode of the National Crawford Roundtable the guys talk about Biden's "recent" cancer diagnosis. Is this another example of the systemic deception instituted by the left intent on shaping the world to fit their narrative in another desperate attempt to cling to power? Or was tis an innocent oversight by his medical team? The guys also discuss the Comey "8647" seashell story. Is it really possible that he didn't understand the meaning? Should former government officials and/or entertainers be offered a wink and a nod, or expect prosecution when they threaten (of suggest) assassination of a U.S. President?
