Matt Cochrane and I discuss The Big Short by Michael Lewis. On our last podcast, we talked about Liar's Poker, Michael Lewis' book about the bond market in the 1980's. The Big Short is very much the sequel to Liar's Poker and it chronicles multiple investors who shorted the housing bubble of the 2000's.Links.The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis: https://www.amazon.com/Big-Short-Inside-Doomsday-Machine-ebook/dp/B003LSTK8GDisclaimerNothing on this substack is investment advice. The information in this article is for information and discussion purposes only. Chapter 1:Summary of Book The Big Short "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" is a non-fiction book by Michael Lewis that was published in 2010. The book chronicles the build-up of the housing and credit bubble during the 2000s and the subsequent financial crisis that ensued. Michael Lewis tells the story through the eyes of several investors who bet against the US mortgage market before the crash. The key characters featured are Steve Eisman, an eccentric hedge fund manager; Michael Burry, a reclusive and socially awkward doctor who turned to investing; Greg Lippmann, a Deutsche Bank trader; and the team from Cornwall Capital, led by Jamie Mai and Charlie Ledley. Each of these investors, through their own research and observations, came to realize that the booming housing market was built on shaky subprime loans, which were likely to fail in large numbers.Michael Lewis explains complex financial instruments like mortgage-backed securities (MBS), collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), and credit default swaps (CDS) in an accessible manner. These instruments played major roles in both the market's expansion and its collapse. The investors' realization that the market was unsustainable led them to "short" the market, essentially betting against the mortgage-backed securities by buying credit default swaps.Through the story of these investors, "The Big Street" details both the greed and corruption in the banking sector that led to the financial crisis, and the lack of understanding and regulation that allowed such a catastrophic collapse. The book is a critical examination of the practices that nearly destroyed the global financial system and a real-life thriller with a detailed look at the financial products and the human elements that drove the market collapse. It also serves as a critique of the Wall Street model, highlighting how the pursuit of short-term profits led to long-term disaster for the global economy.Chapter 2:The Theme of Book The Big Short "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" by Michael Lewis, published in 2010, delves into the build-up of the U.S. housing bubble during the 2000s and the eventual financial crisis of 2007-2008. The book focuses particularly on the individuals and small groups who foresaw the collapse and positioned themselves to profit from it, through a financial instrument called the credit default swap, which is essentially a bet against the housing market. Here's an overview of its key plot points, character development, and thematic ideas: Key Plot Points:1. Introduction to the Housing Bubble: The book begins by introducing the U.S. housing bubble, inflated by subprime mortgages and risky lending practices. Financial institutions bundled these risky loans into securities.2. Invention of Credit Default Swaps (CDS): A few outsiders and skeptics notice the unsustainable housing market and the risky nature of the bundled securities. They use credit default swaps to bet against the housing market, essentially insuring the bonds and making a profit when they fail.3. The Investors: The plot traces several key figures, including Steve Eisman, Dr. Michael Burry, Greg Lippmann, and the team from Cornwall Capital, who were among the few to predict and profit from the eventual collapse.4. Realization of the Crisis: As the housing market begins to collapse, these investors face intense scrutiny and pressure, yet their predictions begin to materialize as mortgage defaults skyrocket.5. Outcome: The climax occurs with the full-blown collapse of the housing market, leading to massive financial losses across the globe. The key characters reap...

In 2008, the housing market crash sent shockwaves through the financial industry and the world at large. However, a handful of investors saw the warning signs and began sounding the alarms long before the financial debacle unfolded. Their stories were captured in the New York Times bestselling book, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, and its award-winning film adaptation, The Big Short. Featuring stars like Brad Pitt and Steve Carell, the film brought these investors' experiences to life. Among them was Steve Eisman, Senior Portfolio Manager at Neuberger Berman, portrayed by Steve Carell under the pseudonym Mark Baum. But what really went on behind the scenes? How did Steve spot the canary in the coal mine? And what is his outlook on current markets? On this episode of Disruptive Forces, host Anu Rajakumar invites Steve to chat about his career journey, behind-the-scenes insights of the world famous book and movie, The Big Short and more.      This communication is provided for informational and educational purposes only and nothing herein constitutes investment, legal, accounting or tax advice, or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold a security. Alice Oliver and Josh Hallam (Just Films & That podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Alice's choice The Big Short. The Big Short (2015) is based on the true story of the 2007-2008 financial crash. Based on the book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis and directed by Adam (Step Brothers) McKay. The Big Short tells the story of the financial crash from three separate experiences. Michael (Christian Bale) Burry, a hedge fund manager with a love of drumming and Metallica, discovers that the housing market is extremely unstable and he makes a bet against the market. Jared (Ryan Gosling) Vennett, a Deutsche Bank salesman, finds out about Burry's analysis and uses this information to profit off the crash. An accidental phone call brings in Mark (Steve Carell) Baum and his team who expose that mortgage brokers are selling bad mortgages and use this to their advantage and profit as well. Watching The Big Short may leave you with more questions that answers, like why do they all have bad wigs, why is Margot Robbie in a bath and what exactly is a short? Recommendation scores for The Big Short were very high, due to its dense subject matter and runtime it received lower repeat viewing scores to give an overall rating of 4.51. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Doomsday Clock has never been closer to midnight, yet the nuclear panic of the 1960s feels like history. Jackson Lears, who served as a naval officer on a nuclear-armed ship during the Cold War, discusses how we have embraced the myth of technological prowess to detach ourselves from the horrors of war. “War is the most unpredictable, least controllable enterprise that human beings are capable of, and yet it's the one to which we pay the most technological homage,” he writes. The Big Short Book Notes: Uncovering the Untold Story of the Financial CrisisThe title "the big short" refers to the practice of short selling in finance, where investors bet against certain assets or securities. The book delves into the events leading up to the 2008 financial crisis, and how a few savvy investors saw it coming and profited off of it. Therefore, a fitting subtitle for the book notes could be "Uncovering the Untold Story of the Financial Crisis," highlighting the book's focus on exposing the underbelly of Wall Street and revealing the truth behind one of the biggest financial disasters in modern history. Is The Big Short a true story?Yes, The Big Short is based on a true story. It is a 2015 biographical comedy-drama film directed by Adam McKay and adapted from the non-fiction book "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" by Michael Lewis. The movie tells the story of a group of investors who predicted the housing market crash in 2007-2008 and profited from it. The characters in the movie are based on real people, and the events depicted in the film are largely accurate, although there are some dramatic liberties taken in order to make the story more engaging for audiences. What is the important lesson in The Big Short? The Big Short is a film that highlights the events leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. The main lesson of the film is that the financial system can be incredibly complex and difficult to understand, even for experts. It also shows how greed and the pursuit of profit can lead to catastrophic consequences for individuals and society as a whole. One of the key takeaways from the movie is the importance of being vigilant in questioning the status quo and not taking things at face value. The protagonists of the story were able to recognize the flaws and weaknesses in the housing market and the financial instruments that were created around it, and they took steps to profit from it. Furthermore, the film emphasizes the need for transparency and accountability in the financial industry. The lack of oversight and regulation contributed to the collapse of the housing market, and the subsequent financial crisis, which had far-reaching consequences. Overall, the big lesson from The Big Short is that we must learn from the mistakes of the past and strive to create a more just and equitable financial system that works for everyone, not just a select few. What is the message of The Big Short? The message of The Big Short is that the 2008 financial crisis was caused by a combination of greed, corruption, and excessive risk-taking within the banking industry. Despite numerous warning signs, many people within the industry ignored them in pursuit of short-term profits, leading to disastrous consequences for millions of people. The film highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and ethical business practices, and encourages viewers to be more cautious and informed when it comes to making financial decisions. Ultimately, The Big Short serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked capitalism and the need for strong regulations to prevent future economic crises.

Noam Chomsky discusses the heroic contributions Daniel Ellsberg made by releasing the Pentagon Papers and revealing the madness of American nuclear war plans. Ellsberg uncovered shocking information about the planning for nuclear war in the 1950s, during his time within the system and with high-level access. He revealed details about the planning documents and the existence of a "Doomsday Machine," a system designed by both the United States and Russia that would ensure total destruction in the event of communication failure. He also discovered the delegation of authority to launch nuclear wars, with lower-level military officials interpreting instructions in a way that allowed them to initiate nuclear bombings.

In this episode of Anti-Capitalist Chronicles, Prof. Harvey explores the contributions made by Daniel Ellsberg, the political activist known for releasing the Pentagon Papers in 1971. Ellsberg gave the public a look into the ways in which the US government was lying about the Vietnam war with the Pentagon Papers, and offered a look into how the US military thinks about military policy with respect to nuclear weapons in his book The Doomsday Machine. Ellsberg's contributions are deeply relevant today with the Russian/Ukraine war and the ever-growing number of nuclear weapons around the globe.
