It is my absolute pleasure to have, Jacob Kramer, on AA to talk about his experience with The Apps. You know what apps I'm talking about: Hinge, Bumble, Tinder... FarmersOnly. In this episode Kramer and Sarah talk about their thoughts on the apps and how to navigate using them. You can also play a fun drinking game this episode- everytime Kramer says, "you know," take a drink! Enjoy and play responsibly!
Jacob Kramer is the Vice President of Driver Recruiting at US Xpress, Inc., a job he got by pitching his ideas to the CEO and Head of HR for automating recruitment in their industry. He had transformed stylist hiring for Regis Corp and saw synergies that could apply. So he took a risk, made the pitch, and the rest is history. A self-proclaimed introvert with a drive to solve big recruiting challenges, Jacob Kramer has a knack for using Recruitment Process Automation to replace time-consuming, manual steps in large-scale recruitment. Then he takes it a step further. Never one to be content with the status quo, Jacob challenges his vendors to create and deliver groundbreaking enhancements. Listen as he describes how he and his team germinated the idea of a geo-fenced AI Assistant who, based on census data, matches candidate demographics. No more generic bots for US Xpress candidates! My favorite quote from our conversation? “You can only fail forward. Anything worth doing is going to be difficult, and you're going to fail. But each day, you make improvements.” Indeed! We have our first married couple on the show to talk video games, micro-transactions, and fear and loathing at PAX East. Local burgeoning writer, and newcomer to The Arts Fuse critics circle, Michael Costa joins the show to report on the Fuse's coverage of 2019's PAX East, a major video game convention that your host knows nothing about. He also happens to be Deanna's husband, but I won't say that's how he got the gig. We'll explore questions related to video games as art, the economics of gaming, and just what the heck those kids are up to. Then we welcome community organizer and children's books writer Jacob Kramer to talk about breaking the rules. His work infuses a poetics of revolutionary thought with childlike wonder, encouraging readers of all ages to consider the possible, and challenge the cynics. His book More Bats, about the practical realities of what might happen if the "maximize bats" - more parks, better health care, education programs - was an insert in Jacobin's "Childhood" issue. His latest book is about a pasta loving elephant named Noodlephant, who stands up to the injustice of an oppressive kangaroo regime, conveying the timeless message of civil rights to a new generation. You can read and order Jacob's work on his website, jacobakramer.com. 10% of proceeds from Noodlephant go to support the work of Black and Pink, a prison abolition organization. You can buy the book, donate directly, or both. Michael's pieces on The Arts Fuse can be found here and here.

Famous for her pasta parties, Noodlephant is shocked when the law-loving kangaroos decide noodles are only for them! Noodlephant won’t let this stand—Noodlephants can’t survive on sticks and branches, after all. Determined to do something to push back against an unjust law, she and her friends invent a machine that transforms pens into penne, pillows into ravioli, and radiators into radiatori. With that, the pasta parties are back! But that very night, the kangaroos come bounding through the door… ready to enforce their unjust laws. A zany tale full of pasta puns, friendship, and one Phantastic Noodler, Noodlephant, written by Jacob Kramer and illustrated by K-Fai Steele, explores a community’s response to injustice.
Noodlephant is an elephant who loves pasta. The kangaroos do not like pasta. In fact, they make a law so that no one can enjoy pasta. But Noodlephant will not stand for this and sets out to protest the unfairness of the law and gathers others to demand change. NOODLEPHANT author Jacob Kramer (@jknotjk), illustrator K-Fai Steele (@kfaisteele), and publisher Claudia Zoe Bedrick of Enchanted Lion Books (@EnchantedLion) share the journey of this "pasta to protest" book, and how the trio is using the story to inspire and educate readers of all ages.
