Hi All, After a cracking time at the 5th Tenerife Funk Soul House Fiesta last weekend I decided to recreate my Monday afternoon set at the Fiji Beach Club. Susanne Heipcke is Director of Software Engineering at FICO, where she has led the Modelling Team of FICO Xpress development for more than 12 years. Her team is responsible for the development and design of the modelling tools (Xpress Mosel) and the APIs of the Xpress Optimization software suite, with past tasks including the design of application development toolkits, solution templates, and productized optimization solutions such as FICO Decision Optimizer. More recently, her team's responsibilities have expanded to include CI/CD, performance testing, and delivery infrastructure for the entire Xpress suite. Before joining Dash Optimization (acquired by FICO in 2008) in 1998, she worked for BASF-AG in Germany. Her Ph.D. research at the University of Buckingham—conducted partly at the MIT OR Center (USA) and the University Aix-Marseille II (France)—focused on solving large-scale industrial problems using a combination of constraint programming and mixed integer programming. Her work centers on all aspects of modelling, particularly through her contributions to the development of the algebraic modelling and programming language Xpress Mosel. She is the author of the book Applications of Optimization with Xpress-MP and numerous papers on different aspects of mathematical modelling. Susanne enjoys teaching mathematical optimization, having participated in teaching the mathematical modelling course in the OR master's program at the University Aix-Marseille II (2001–2004) and the Computational Mixed-Integer Programming course at the Technical University of Munich in 2020. She regularly organizes specialist training events and conference sessions, such as the “Software for Optimization Modeling and Deployment” sessions at recent INFORMS Annual Meetings (jointly with Bob Fourer), and she is actively engaged in mentoring younger colleagues. Since 2019 she has been a member of the EURO Practitioners' Forum committee (formerly the EURO Working Group Practice of OR), leading the organization of the Forum's annual meetings in 2020, 2023, and 2026. Max is one of the visionaries that helped to create the truckload and logistics industries that we have today. As an early adopter of many safety, productivity and driver comfort, Max was very early on with items like power steering, air conditioning, steering stability controls, disc brakes, satellite communications, traction control, collision avoidance systems, electronics on engines years before it was accepted by the industry. He was one of the first to computerize his company in the mid 1980s. He would find technologies in Europe and push for implementation in the U.S. Max has developed companies in various industries with great success. He developed Paragon Trailer Rental which was sold to GE. He developed Xpress Data systems which he sold the software assets to Qualcomm. He started a company called Innovative Processing Solutions (a fintech software company) which was sold to US Bank. He co-founded a fintech company called TransCard which specializes in b to b and b to c payment applications. During his tenure at U.S. Xpress Enterprises, he completed 31 acquisitions with successful implementations. Do you remember WEMF out of Toronto? Jon the Dentist does!  WEMF was one of the early big-deal outdoor electronic music festivals in Canada and ran annually from the mid-'90s onwards. It was originally formed as a collaboration between Destiny Productions and Boscaland Records (Jon the Dentist's label) and was called "The World Trance Music Festival" but quickly grew beyond just a trance festival.  At its peak it drew thousands, spanned multiple days, and offered a wide palette of trance, house, hardcore, goa-psy, drum'n'bass. The university attributed the decision to declining enrollment, but critics argue the process lacked transparency and undercounted students. Demonstrators carried signs and chanted slogans emphasizing the importance of diversity. The Board of Regents, which oversees such decisions, has not addressed the issue in its upcoming meeting. DEI programs face increasing opposition at state and federal levels, including legislative efforts in Georgia to defund them. STORY 2: Cobb Commuter Routes Consolidated, Free Cumberland Loop Cut Cobb County will eliminate the free Green Circulator bus loop near The Battery and consolidate three commuter routes (100, 101, 102) into the regional 484 Xpress route due to reduced ridership and the failure of a proposed transit tax. Ridership on commuter routes has dropped 81% since 2019, prompting cost-saving measures. The changes will save over $1.1 million annually, with funds redirected to other transit needs, including the 2025 All-Star Game. The county’s deal with ATL adds seven trips to the 484 route, covering most of the same stops, though the Marietta Transfer Center will no longer be included. STORY 3: Second Annual Paws Fest is May 17-18 The Avenue of West Cobb will host its second annual Paws Fest on May 17-18, featuring exciting DockDogs canine competitions like Big Air Wave, Extreme Vertical, and Speed Retrieve. Events begin at 10 a.m. each day, with finals on May 18 at 4:30 p.m. The festival also includes pet-friendly vendors, interactive booths, grooming services, and giveaways, such as doggy ice cream treats from Bark Street Petopia. Serving 50 families monthly, the pantry provides nonperishable food, produce, meat, diapers, and hygiene products. As a Title I school, 90% of Dunleith students receive free or reduced lunches, highlighting the need. This pantry is the fourth opened through a $207,000 Kroger-MUST partnership, which has established 18 pantries across Cobb and Cherokee counties. The initiative aims to reduce food insecurity, allowing students to focus on learning while addressing Kroger’s mission of “zero hunger, zero waste.” STORY 5: Marietta School Board Applauds Staff Support in Tentative Budget Approval The Marietta Board of Education tentatively approved a $167 million fiscal 2026 budget, a 5% increase from last year, focusing on staff raises and maintaining a flat 17.97 millage rate. The budget includes an average 3.3% raise for employees, with some reaching 6.4%, and allocates over 90% of the increase to salaries and benefits. Key allocations include $3.65 million for raises, $770,000 for new staff, and $2.6 million for insurance premium hikes. Public hearings are set for June 10 and 17, with a final vote on June 17. Additional approvals include funding for math programs, HR software, and school security. Worshippers can hear messages from Bryant Wright, Crawford Loritts, and Parker Wyatt, with services beginning at 7 a.m. The park opens at 3 a.m., and the Summit Skyride starts at 4 a.m. The event includes sign language interpreters and family-friendly activities like Dino Fest afterward. Vehicle entry costs $20 for a day or $40 annually, while church vans and buses enter free. Walking the trail is free, and Skyride fees are $20 round-trip. STORY 2: Snellville preparing to break ground on Briscoe Park community center After two decades of planning, Snellville will break ground on a 34,000-square-foot community center at T.W. Briscoe Park on May 1, with construction starting May 5. Opening in summer 2026, the $11.3 million facility will feature basketball courts, an indoor walking track, multi-purpose rooms, an aerobics room, and an outdoor pavilion. However, cartel leaders Johnny and Jose Alfredo Hurtado Olascoaga remain at large, with an $8 million reward for their capture. The operation uncovered a Gwinnett County money-wiring scheme, "smurfing," to send drug proceeds to Mexico. The DEA called it Atlanta's largest fentanyl seizure, valued at $1.5 million. The suspects allegedly cut the lock to a cigarette cage at a RaceTrac near Coolray Field on Dec. 8 and stole multiple cartons. Similar thefts occurred in Snellville, Athens, and Ellenwood. The suspects fled in a black Dodge Durango. Police urge anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, where tips can remain anonymous.STORY 2: Georgia Falls to Notre Dame in College Football PlayoffGeorgia's football season ended with a 23-10 loss to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Sugar Bowl. The game, delayed due to a terrorist attack, saw Georgia take an early lead but falter after Notre Dame's strong plays at the end of the first half and start of the second. Georgia's Gunner Stockton, in his first start, threw for 234 yards but was sacked four times. Notre Dame's Jayden Harrison returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, solidifying their lead.
