Primary election results are in, but the conversation quickly shifts to a bigger question: how long can America afford to stay locked in a costly conflict overseas? Mike examines growing public frustration, the political risks facing both parties, and why voters are paying close attention to promises that key developments may be just around the corner. Along the way, he breaks down the latest Republican victories, what they could mean for the midterms, and why the months ahead may prove critical for the future of the country. As economic concerns and global tensions collide, the pressure is mounting for answers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

620: Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals: Smart Politics or Permanent Agitation?

The boys drink and review Sierra Nevada's Torpedo Extra IPA, then move on to political strategy and methods. Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals remains one of the most influential—and controversial—books on political organizing ever written. In this episode, Pigweed and Crowhill dive into the life and ideas of the Chicago community organizer whose methods have shaped activist movements for generations. From "pick the target" and "keep the pressure on" to the strategic use of ridicule, disruption, and media attention, they unpack Alinsky's famous tactics and examine why they continue to be effective decades after they were first developed. But the conversation goes beyond a simple review of organizing techniques. Are these tactics merely practical tools that can be used by anyone seeking political change, or do they encourage a permanent culture of conflict? Why do modern movements always seem to be searching for the next crisis, the next injustice, or the next cause? Pigweed and Crowhill explore whether activism has become less about solving problems and more about sustaining a mindset of perpetual agitation.Along the way, they discuss Barack Obama's background as a community organizer, Hillary Clinton's connection to Alinsky, Ben Shapiro's surprising praise for some of Alinsky's methods, and the broader question of how political narratives are created, amplified, and maintained. Whether you see Alinsky as a champion of the powerless, a master strategist, or something more troubling, his influence on modern politics is impossible to ignore.

Get David's book here: https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/.../rainforest-radicals/   Rainforest Radicals presents the first history of one of the most innovative and successful environmental organizations of the late twentieth century. Rainforest Action Network emerged in 1985, when it took over a fledgling effort to protect rainforests from transnational corporations funding the expansion of tropical cattle ranching. It excelled at using nonviolent, civil disobedience in dramatic campaigns that captured the attention of the public, media, and RAN's corporate adversaries. As a result, two decades later rainforest conservation went from a niche academic topic to a fixture in American popular culture, the rights of Indigenous people had gone from ignored or romanticized to at least considered in discussions of the management of their ancestral homelands, and RAN had scored a series of victories over some of the planet's largest corporations. In Rainforest Radicals David Benac traces the evolution of RAN and radical, transnational grassroots environmentalism through the four campaigns identified at the group's founding: rainforest beef, Hawai‘ian rainforests, tropical timber, and multinational development banks. Forty years after RAN's inception, there is much to learn from how it organized people in small towns and large cities across the United States, created alliances that spanned oceans, and inspired a new movement that integrated human rights, Indigenous sovereignty, and environmental protection to challenge multinational corporations, national governments, and neocolonial corporate-led globalism.   Through more than thirty oral histories, including those of key players from different eras of RAN's history as well as leaders from other environmental and Indigenous rights organizations, Rainforest Radicals provides unparalleled insight into the network.   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   READ THE WEEKLY TIR NEWSLETTER HERE: https://www.patreon.com/collection/1853497   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. In this episode of The Podcast for Cultural Reformation, Dr. Joe Boot and Dr. Michael Thiessen think Christianly about Marxism — not as a political or economic theory, but as a religious worldview offering a counterfeit vision of salvation, history, and liberation. Joe traces Marx's roots in Hegel and Rousseau, unpacks dialectical materialism and conflict theory, and shows why Marxism is a fundamentally destructive project. Drawing on Marx's own writings and Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals, Joe and Michael expose how Marxism parodies the Christian story — borrowing categories like alienation, reformation, justice, and freedom while emptying them of objective content. The result is a messianic vision driven by envy and resentment, with ordinary people serving as the cannon fodder of an undefined utopia. Against this counterfeit, Joe sets the true paradigm of liberation: the Exodus. From Passover blood to Sinai law, the biblical story is recapitulated in Christ — the greater Moses, the greater Joshua, the true Passover Lamb — who delivers his people not into lawless utopia but into a kingdom of righteousness, holiness, and dominion. Marxism offers a savior who covets your stuff. Christianity proclaims the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for the sheep.

In a special encore episode, we're reposting our episode from 2020.In this episode, we commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of May 4th, 1970 at Kent State University, where agents of the state murdered 4 students and shot 9 others. Students, who'd been told the war was winding down in Vietnam, erupted in protest at campuses all over America when Richard Nixon announced the U.S. invasion of Cambodia on April 30th. At Kent State, a working-class public school in Northeast Ohio, protesting students and other burned down an ROTC building, a common target in the Vietnam protest era, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes, vowing a violent response, mobilized the National Guard and sent them to Kent. For two days the students and Guard skirmished, with the paramilitaries hurling tear gas and intimidating students. On May 4th, the Guard, unprovoked, started shooting into the crowd of students and shot 13, killing 4, from distances beyond 300 feet. These were extrajudicial killings and a sure sign the state would murder anyone who challenged its interests. The war had come home! Scott and Bob, who's also a historian of the Vietnam War and the 1960s and has published extensively on those subjects, talk about the background to the protests, the official, violent response, the aftermath at places like Jackson State, where 2 more students were killed, and the larger context of anti-state protests and their meaning, and lessons.----------Outro// "Green and Red Blues" by Moody

Today we are joined by Mattie Fitch, Associate Professor at Marymount University and author of The People, The Workers and the Citizens: Antifascist Cultures and the Popular Front in France, 1934-1939 (Routledge, 2026). In our conversation, we discussed the way that antifascist culture undergirded the French Popular Front, the tensions between the Communists, Socialists, and Radical antifascist projects, and the ways that each Popular Front party of defined “the people.” In The People, The Workers and the Citizens, Fitch explores Popular Front antifascist programs and the cultural work that illuminated their diverse visions for a “people's government.” The book is thematic: in her first chapter, Fitch examines the Communists' Maison de la Culture and the Fédération musicale populaire. The communist's efforts to produce a worker's culture successfully mobilized French national symbols in novel ways but had difficulties navigating between high and low culture. By contrast, chapter 2 centres on Jean Zay and the Radicals. Zay's influence abounded and he was willing to work with anyone in the Popular Front to see cultural access extended to all French citizens. Yet his vision of a civic nationhood clashed with his Communist and Socialist allies who privileged workers. The most enigmatic were the Socialists. Although they were the largest party in the French National Assembly, Leon Blum's party struggled to articulate an antifascist program that encompassed all of their voters. Their pacifism proved a problem in the context of a rising Nazi Germany, and they were squeezed between the increasing nationalism of the French Communists and the Radicals' appeal to the working class. Fitch's analysis moves beyond earlier studies that focus mostly (or only) on Paris. In chapters 4 and 5, she looks at the antifascist activities of politicians in Marseille and Rouen and finds two very different Popular Fronts at work in the regions. In Marseille, working class politics dominate and an authentic endogenous Popular Front culture precedes directives from the capital. While in Rouen, extremely moderate Radicals battle working class activists on the other side of town. Fitch's work is compelling and shines a new light on the history of the Popular Front. It will be of interest to scholars of modern France and political culture. Learn more about your ad choices. “The Irish fight for liberty is the greatest epic of the modern age… those suffering together under British imperialism must learn to coordinate their effort before they can hope to be free.”These words from the Black radical Cyril Briggs captured how many people of colour viewed the Irish War of Independence. Today, the Irish Revolution is usually remembered as a struggle shaped by empire, nationalism and religion. But race also haunted this history. As Ireland fought for freedom, racial tensions were erupting across the world. In 1919, the United States was convulsed by the Red Summer, when white mobs launched brutal attacks on African American communities. At the same time, many opponents of Irish independence portrayed the conflict in Ireland as a racial struggle.Yet the relationship between Irish republicans and Black radicals was never straightforward. While Black activists looked to Ireland with hope, many Irish leaders were slow to support Black struggles and some even argued that Ireland deserved freedom precisely because the Irish were white. This episode uncovers the forgotten story of solidarity, suspicion and betrayal between Irish and Black radicals and reveals how deeply the politics of race shaped the Irish War of Independence. This is the fourth episode in Brothers in Pain a groundbreaking Global history of the Irish War of Independence by Dr Brian HanleyWritten, Researched & Narrated by Dr Brian Hanley. In this episode of The Wright Report, Bryan covers a major Supreme Court case that could redefine birthright citizenship and determine who qualifies as an American under the 14th Amendment. He also reports on growing concerns about Islamist influence and terrorism, including a Michigan Senate candidate's comments on Dearborn and a Hezbollah-linked attack tied to a naturalized U.S. citizen, alongside a broader warning from Europe after a foiled bombing plot in Paris. Finally, Bryan breaks down a potentially major shift in U.S. strategy toward Iran, as the White House quietly changes its war goals and signals it may be willing to step back from the conflict - even if key objectives like reopening the Strait of Hormuz remain unresolved.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: birthright citizenship Supreme Court case 14th Amendment, who is an American debate Trump executive order, Dearborn Michigan Islamist influence US politics, Hezbollah attack naturalized US citizen Michigan, Paris bombing plot Europe migrant terror, Iran war strategy shift Trump Hormuz Strait, US foreign policy Middle East withdrawal, Bryan Dean Wright podcast, The Wright Report

1. Joseph Ellis, *The Cause: The American Revolution and Its Discontents, 1773 to 1783*. The term "the cause" was a verbal canopy used by colonists to unite diverse interest groups, ranging from New England radicals to Virginia slaveholders, against Britishpolicy. Originally called the "common cause," it represented the shared willingness of the colonies to support Massachusetts following the Coercive Acts. The movement evolved from a defense of rights into a revolutionary agenda for independence. Colonists argued the British constitution protected them from taxation without consent, viewing the end of "benign neglect" as a tyrannical plotto enslave them. Ultimately, "the cause" articulated the belief that government cannot strip citizens of rights without their permission. (1)15TH CENTURY MAP
