We discuss Marcuse's background and role as a leading thinker of the New Left. We also analyze Marcuse's goal of liberation or autonomy, his understanding of the relationship between speech and action, his use of the term totalitarian, and his understanding of the duty of the intellectual.Our guest is Professor Alexander Duff. Alex is a scholar of the history of political philosophy, focusing on the ontology and psychology of statecraft and politics. He was trained at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned his Ph.D. from the department of Political Science and was educated in the humanities and history at Carleton University, Ottawa. He is the author of Heidegger and Politics: The Ontology of Radical Discontent (Cambridge University Press) and numerous articles on classical, Renaissance, modern, and contemporary political philosophy which have appeared in the American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Political Review Quarterly, the Review of Metaphysics, the Heidegger- Jahrbuch, and other scholarly and popular publications. His work has been translated into Estonian and Farsi.He teaches at the University of North Texas where he is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the Constitutionalism and Democracy Forum. He has held fellowships from the Tocqueville Program for Inquiry into Religion and American Public Life at the University of Notre Dame and from the Program for the Study of the Western Heritage at Boston College and has delivered lectures at many colleges and universities, including Oxford, Harvard, Yale, the University of Notre Dame, Boston College, the University of Texas: Austin, and Louisiana State University. How did we become a society that proclaims "tolerance" to be the greatest good, while still being so intolerant toward certain points of view? In this week's episode, we explore this question, looking at the influential 1965 essay by Herbert Marcuse, "Repressive Tolerance," and considering its lasting and destructive influence.

After being disenchanted by the "exhaustion of the left" he drifted from a Marxist/Hegel leaning ideology to embrace the ideas of the right, through the more totalizing illiberal  Carl Schmitt. Artificial Negativity (Piccone and Lake) asserts the Herbert Marcuse's idea of the one-dimensional man was the final control necessary for totalizing control through consumerism. The elites allow for negativity because any system has excesses it must recalibrate towards (cybernetic theory), thus negativity is managed simulations, not organic but artificial. Repressive Tolerance (Marcuse) asserts that Tolerance can be used to repress people into conformity, thus denying actual tolerance in the name of tolerance. Used primarily by the Left, Piccone made use of this type of logic to squash critiques of artificial negativity. The Particular must be saved to save individuality and diversity. Yet, since we have all become the one-dimensional man, any organic negativity that can break the capitalist/consumer system must be grown from the outside. The particular rejects totalization. Piccone thought powerful authority was the only way to save the particular (diverse groups) from becoming flattened, but that smacks of totalitarianism, which negates all difference. Part 3: OutcomePiccone's movement from left to right hints that his rebellion did not find the true ground to sublate the antithesis. However, the ideas are interesting and useful. Unfortunately, we must keep in mind that negativity and staged displays, even the managerial new class, serve a function for the poor and disenfranchised and allow dissent against war. 

Probably the most influential Marxist thinker of the 20th century was the Critical Marxist Herbert Marcuse. His ideas were so influential that I commonly find myself saying "we live in Herbert Marcuse's world" today. This is because thanks to the New Left that he spawned, we live in Herbert Marcuse's twisted world, which may now be in the early stages of collapse. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 44 Liberation Series, Part 2 of 4 Herbert Marcuse is one of the most influential Leftist thinkers of the 1950s and 1960s, and for that reason he is often regarded as the father of the "New Left," which is reaching something of a crescendo in the Woke Movement of today. His goal was straightforward: liberation. In 1969, he wrote an influential essay (or short book) called "An Essay on Liberation" in which he explains what liberation looks like and how we should achieve it. So that you can better understand the moment we find ourselves in, James Lindsay has been reading "An Essay on Liberation" (https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/marcuse/works/1969/essay-liberation.htm) for the New Discourses Podcast in full, with his explanation and commentary. This is the second part of that series, reading through part two of Marcuse's infamous essay, "A New Sensibility." In the first part of the essay, Marcuse lays out a case that we need to change mankind at the "biological" (meaning, it seems, mostly psychological and instinctual) level to make way for a liberated socialism. In this part of the essay, Marcuse explains that man will need to develop a "new sensibility" and even a "new rationality" (Critical Consciousness) in order to break the cycle of repression that he believes characterizes free, liberal societies (i.e., those that aren't Communism). His argument is that what people consider "sensible" constrains and represses their imagination, so a new (liberated, read: communistic) "sensibility" is needed and must replace the old sensibility. Then we will understand how sensibility and reason constrain and repress us and prevent previous (Communist and French) revolutions from succeeding at producing true liberation. It's a truly shocking piece of work, and it is obvious upon understanding it that its general thrust defines the ethos of radical Leftism today in the Critical Social Justice movements that have derived from it.
