Dana and Tom with 5x Club member and CLP contributor, Peterson W. Hill (Co-Host of the War Starts at Midnight podcast), discuss The Killing (1956), celebrating its 70th anniversary: written and directed by Stanley Kubrick, cinematography by Lucien Ballard, editing by Lucy Steinberg, music by Gerald Fried, starring Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Vince Edwards, and Jay C. Flippen.Plot Summary: The Killing is a tense crime thriller about a carefully planned racetrack robbery that slowly falls apart because of bad luck, greed, and human mistakes. Sterling Hayden plays Johnny Clay, a smart criminal who gathers a group of men to help him steal money from a horse racing track. Each member of the team has a specific job, and the plan seems nearly perfect. As the robbery moves forward, Kubrick shows the events from different points of view, building suspense as the audience sees how every detail connects. Problems begin when one man's reckless actions and another man's jealous wife threaten the entire operation.Guest:Peterson W. Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. On this evening' show we've got some dreamy songs, some hello and good-bye songs, and we'll celebrate a couple of birthdays. Enjoy the show! Here’s the complete playlist: Segment 1: OneiricWe're going to start off with a vocabulary lesson. The word for this week is oneiric, an adjective meaning of or relating to dreams or “dreamy” as in The misty garden setting and odd dialogue gave the film an oneiric quality.” So here to begin the program are some oneiric songs. Hong Kong Dream Girl – Wally Erickson's Coliseum Orchestra Dreaming a Dream – Al Bowlly The Girl With the Dreamy Eyes – Jack Hylton and His Orchestra / Pat O'Malley Segment 2: HelloAlexander Graham Bell, of the telephone invention, suggested using the greeting of “Ahoy” when answering the telephone. Obviously, that didn't take. Thomas Edison thought that ““hello”” would be a more appropriate greeting, so here are some “hello” songs to commemorate Thomas Edison's suggestion to use “hello” instead of “ahoy” when answering the telephone. Hello, Bluebird – Jay C. Flippen and His Gang Won't You Come Over and Say “Hello” – Clarence Williams / Chick Bullock Hello Hello – Louisiana Five Segment 3: CookingAugust 15 marked the birth in 1912 in Pasadena, California, of Julia McWilliams. You know her better as Julia Child, America's first lady of cooking. So here in celebration of Julia Child's birthday, are some songs about cooking. Chicken Supper Strut – Triangle Harmony Boys Cooking Breakfast for the One I Love – Leonard Joy/Fannie Brice How Mother Made the Soup – Charley Case Home Cooking – Eddie Condon AHO Segment 4: Mae WestAugust 17 marked the birth in 1893 in Brooklyn, New York, of Mary Jane West. You know her better as Mae West. She made only 6 commercial recordings, and here are three of them. They Call Me Sister Honky Tonk I Like a Guy What Takes His Time Easy Rider Segment 5: GoodbyeEarlier in the show we had a set of “hello” songs. So it only makes sense that we should have a set of “goodbye” songs. Goody Goodbye – Harry Roy AHO/Harry Roy Goodbye Love – Dick Himber and His Essex House Ork/Joey Nash And So Goodbye – Adrian Rollini AHO / Herb Wyle THANKS FOR LISTENING! While most of you are not on Catalina Island and can't take advantage of the merchant discounts and offers that go with membership, you'll be supporting community radio on Catalina Island and beyond. I am not paid for the show, nor is it underwritten. I do the show because I love the music and the people, stories and culture behind it. Visit http://www.kislavalon.com/membership. Thanks!
