Today on Art of the Cut we speak with Oscar-winning editor - and now DIRECTOR - William Goldenberg, ACE about his directorial debut - the NUMBER ONE GLOBAL MOVIE on Amazon - Unstoppable. Of course, we also have William's editor - no, he didn't edit it himself - Brett Reed. Brett and William have been working together for more than 20 years. William has been on Art of the Cut many times, including for The Instigators, Air, The Outfit, News of the World, 22 July, Detroit, and Live By Night. Billy won the Oscar for Best editing, a BAFTA and an ACE Eddie for Argo. He was nominated for an ACE Eddie for Air, an Oscar nomination and a BAFTA nom for The Imitation Game, nominated for an Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty, nominated for an Oscar and an ACE Eddie for Seabiscuit, and for The Insider… and an Emmy for Citizen X. Brett was also on The Instigators. He was an editor on M. Night Shyamalan's Old. He was also an additional editor on Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Detroit and Live by Night. This discussion includes - among other things - the editing skills that helped William transition to director, why - other than their long working relationship - that William chose Brett as his editor, editing handheld footage - and a fascinating bit of Hollywood lore about Led Zeppelin and the movie Argo. UNSTOPPABLE director Billy Goldenberg and editor Brett Reed have had a working relationship for over twenty years, going back to their time together on COYOTE UGLY (2000). Since that film, they've logged a lot of hours as "editor and assistant" or "editor and additional editor", but their new film brings about a whole new dynamic, "director and editor". UNSTOPPABLE is the inspiring true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) who was born with one leg but whose indomitable spirit and unbreakable resolve empowered him to defy the odds and pursue his dreams. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion. WILLIAM GOLDENBERG, ACE While UNSTOPPABLE is Billy's first shot at directing, he is one of the most well-respected and sought-after film editors working today. He won an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and the American Cinema Editors' (ACE) Eddie Award for his outstanding work on the 2013 Best Picture winner, Argo, directed by Ben Affleck. His recent editing credits include Air, 22 July, Unbroken, and Concussion. Goldenberg received dual Oscar nominations in 2013, also being nominated, along with editor Dylan Tichenor, for his work on Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. In 2015, Billy was again nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, and an Eddie Award for the historical thriller The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. He was previously Oscar-nominated for his editing work on Seabiscuit, and on Michael Mann's controversial film The Insider (with Paul Rubell and David Rosenbloom). Goldenberg was also part of the editing team on Mann's Heat, Ali, and Miami Vice BRETT M. REED Prior to cutting UNSTOPPABLE for Billy, Brett also collaborated with Artists Equity on Doug Liman's film THE INSTIGATORS, starring Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Hong Chau. Additionally, he edited OLD, directed by M. Night Shyamalan for Universal Pictures, as well as several episodes of Shyamalan's television show THE SERVANT for Apple TV+. Previously Reed cut CLOUDS directed by Justin Baldoni for Disney+; Christoph Waltz' GEORGETOWN; Automatik's DREAMLAND directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte and starring Margot Robbie; and Nick Hamm's bio-thriller DRIVEN, starring Erin Moriarty and Lee Pace. Brett's earlier work with Billy Goldenberg included supporting him as an Additional Editor on TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS, LIVE BY NIGHT, CONCUSSION, UNBROKEN and ARGO. Reed was also a First Assistant Editor on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, ZERO DARK THIRTY, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, NATIONAL TREASURE, amongst others. Today on Art of the Cut, we discuss editing the Apple Plus feature film The Instigators with three editors, including Oscar-winning editor William Goldenberg, ACE, Oscar-nominee Tatiana Riegel, ACE, and Oscar-nominee Saar Klein. Billy's been on Art of the Cut six times before for his work on Live By Night, Detroit, 22 July, The Outfit, News of the World, and Air. Billy won an Oscar, a BAFTA, and an ACE Eddie for Argo, and was nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA and an Eddie for The Imitation Game. He was also nominated for an Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty, but lost to … himself. He was also nominated for Oscars for Seabiscuit and The Insider. Tatiana has been on Art of the Cut to discuss The Girl in the Spider's Web, Cruella, and I, Tonya. Tatiana has been winning ACE Eddies since back in 2008! She was nominated for an Oscar and won an ACE Eddie AND an Independent Spirit Award for I, Tonya, was nominated for an Emmy for Pam & Tommy, and was nominated for an ACE Eddie for Cruella. Saar was nominated for an Oscar and an ACE Eddie for The Thin Red Line, and he was nominated for an Oscar and won an ACE Eddie for Almost Famous. His other work includes, Jumper, The Bourne Identity, and the TV series, Masters of the Air. A three-person panel of editors with 8 Oscar nominations between them discusses the emotional impact of structural changes, the advantages of objectivity, and Stockholm Syndrome as it applies to directors!

This week, no harm ever came from reading a book, and we test out if the same is true of watching a movie as we discuss 1999's The Mummy on the day it returns to theatres for a 25th anniversary re-release. The Mummy is written and directed by Stephen Sommers, and stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Patricia Velasquez, Oded Fehr, Kevin J. O'Connor and Erick Avari. Hayley has put this one up for canon consideration, as it is once again the last Friday of the month and we just might be adding another title to the illustrious pod pantheon. It's a movie that did big business on home video, and may just do decent business at the weekend box office again 25 years later this weekend. If you'd like to watch The Mummy before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Tubi and Starz at the time of publication. Not sure how! But it is. Other films discussed on this episode include Defending Your Life, The Good Place, Live By Night, Veronica Guerin, The Fifth Estate, BlackBerry, Bon Cop Bad Cop, Stronger, The Exorcist: Believer, Valkyrie, Inglourious Basterds, Oblivion, Knight & Day, The Beekeeper, Suicide Squad, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blast From The Past, Stargate, The Mummy Returns, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Batman ('89), The Amazing Spider-Man, The Rocketeer, Mr. Deeds, Daredevil, Speed Racer and Spider-Man 2. We'll be back next week to kick off a new month, as David Leitch's TV adaptation The Fall Guy hits the big screen. And you know what else falls? Domino...s. Yes, we're going back to the well with our man Tony Scott as we watch his 2005 thriller Domino, starring Keira Knightley, Mickey Rourke and Edgar Ramirez, which is sadly not streaming anywhere. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR is this month's theme and that means classic noir 5 days a week. Bob loves this shit so we're all gonna overdose on it. No drug use under the Hays Code, though. We got ourselves a lovely little “noirmance” from “Rebel Without a Cause” director Nicholas Ray. This is actually Ray's debut film and it's a very worthy noir gem that most folks may not have heard about. We're talking about “THEY LIVE BY NIGHT” from 1948. It stars Farley Granger and Cathy O'Donnell in an incredibly sincere and believable romance that is cornered by the dark realities of the kind of world that all of our characters this month are forced to live in. A beautifully shot love story that connects until it inevitably rips you apart. This world is too hard on true love. Today on the 5: Once again the fantastic Criterion Channel has come through with an older film that I enjoyed immensely. They Live By Night was a recently added to a collection titled Holiday Noir, and while it certainly does feature Christmas as part of the story this is a movie that is great whenever you watch it.

2016's Live By Night was a rare miss by star and director Ben Affleck. On paper, it had everything you'd think it needed to be successful: great cast (Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper, Chris Messina, Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller), a cool premise (mob sets up new scene during Prohibition), and a director in Affleck who has emerged as one of Hollywood's best. But it didn't quite hit. But that doesn't mean it's not great for us. Live By Night offers the opportunity to talk about Ybor City, the "Harlem of Tampa," and a town many of you have never heard of. But you should know Ybor City. As guest Sarah McNamara shows in her new book, Ybor City: Crucible of the Latina South, the comunidad features a vibrant Cuban American culture and history all to its own, and understanding it is key to knowing both Florida and the United States. We talk about the history of Ybor City, the role of race in Cuban American communities during Jim Crow, the changing nature of womanhood in Ybor families during the early 20th century, and the differences between Tampa and Miami's Cuban communities. This is maybe the best episode we've ever done.About our guest:Sarah McNamara is Assistant Professor of History and core faculty in the Latina/o/x & Mexican American Studies Program at Texas A&M University. McNamara's research centers on Latinx, women and gender, immigration, and labor histories in the modern United States. Her first book, Ybor City: Crucible of the Latina South, examines the U.S. South as a transnational, multi-racial borderland and argues that in this space gender and sexuality played a central role in the (re)making of race, community, region, and nation. Ybor City is the history of three generations of migrant, immigrant, and U.S. born Latinas and Latinos— predominantly from Cuba, the Caribbean, and the Americas—who collided in Tampa, Florida from the late nineteenth through the mid twentieth centuries. While popular narratives of the origins of Latina/o/x Florida focus on Cuban immigrants who fled the rise of Fidel Castro in the 1950s and 1960s, McNamara centers on earlier generations whose migration, labor, activism, and leftist politics established the foundation of latinidad in the sunshine state. This portrait of political shifts that defined Ybor City highlights the underexplored role of women's leadership within movements for social and economic justice as it illustrates how people, places, and politics become who and what they are.You can find her on twitter at @Dr_SarahMac
This week, we discuss two films connected to American author Dennis Lehane. The first is Live by Night (2016), an American crime drama set in the 1920s. The film, an adaptation of Lehane's novel, stars Ben Affleck, who also served as screenwriter and director on the project. It was a huge flop upon release, netting a meagre $22.7 million from a $90 million budget. The second is Mona Lisa (1986), a British crime drama co-written and directed by Neil Jordan. The film stars Bob Hoskins, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his role as George, a hapless ex-con tasked with driving around a high-class prostitute. Editor, William Goldenberg ACE AIR editor William Goldenberg ACE ("Billy" to his friends) re-joins The Rough Cut to discuss his new film with director Ben Affleck. A highly accomplished editor, Billy has been nominated for an Oscar® a total of five times for THE INSIDER, SEABISCUIT, THE IMITATION GAME, ZERO DARK THIRTY and ARGO. The latter two nominations came on the same year, with Billy ultimately winning for ARGO, directed by Ben Affleck. Goldenberg and Affleck also worked together on LIVE BY NIGHT and GONE BABY GONE. Written by Alex Convery and directed by Ben Affleck, AIR tells the story of Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) and his quest to establish Nike in the world of basketball by signing a young phenom named Michael Jordan. The only way Vacarro can get any attention from a reluctant Jordan is to win over Michael's mother, Deloris (Viola Davis). The film also stars Chris Tucker, Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans and Ben Affleck as Nike head honcho, Phil Knight. Ben Affleck adapts another Denis Lehane novel to the big screen and this time, it's the period gangster epic – LIVE BY NIGHT, co-starring Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller and Elle Fanning. It opened nationwide this weekend and The No-Name Cinema Society went out to see it and they will break the film down for you. Originally aired on YouTube in January of 2017.
Our coverage of the terrible menswear in Live By Night (2016) is here! This is the movie that put Affleck in baggy suits for no reason, makes 1926 look like 1946, and contains a flash back that lasts for about 30 minutes. If people want to ask why Golden Era Menswear never took the zeitgeist like Mad Men, just watch this mediocre gangster flick. Dennis Lehane: Chopin vodka over crushed iceCan't say I loved this drink, but it grew on me (a little) over the course of our conversation. Dennis discusses his book to film experiences with his novels MYSTIC RIVER, SHUTTER ISLAND, GONE BABY GONE, LIVE BY NIGHT and working with Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Ben Affleck, Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio; how his life changed dramatically with the smash success of MYSTIC RIVER in 2001, making his bones writing in the 1990s while competing with and congratulating his contemporaries and friends Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Harlan Coben; how he approaches teaching fiction-writing to Harvard students and what students can expect to learn from him, how a show gets made beginning with the option of the book rights all the way to the show appearing on the small screen - using the example of Black Bird for which he was showrunner, and the number one thing a person must have to be a good writer.

SIENNA MILLER, star of American Sniper, Foxcatcher and new film WANDER DARKLYABOUT SIENNA'S NEW FILM WANDER DARKLY, IN THEATERS AND STREAMING DECEMBER 11thIn WANDER DARKLY, a traumatic accident leaves a couple, Adrienne (Sienna Miller) and Matteo (Diego Luna), in a surreal state of being that takes them on a disorienting journey through the duality of their shared moments. By reliving fond recollections from the beginning of their romance while also navigating the overwhelming truths of their present, they must rediscover the love that truly binds them together. Writer-director Tara Miele offers a profound new perspective on the delicate nature of relationships with this emotionally moving story about a couple who must reflect on their past in order to face their uncertain future.ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY ARTICLE ON WANDER DARKLY FROM OCTOBER 2020"What do you think happens when you die?"It's a question we've all asked ourselves, but in Wander Darkly, Sienna Miller's Adrienne must literally confront the great beyond if she wants to move forward from a traumatic accident.Dolphins and lush landscapes abound in EW's exclusive trailer for the film, before darkness and horror begin to descend. Wander Darkly finds Adrienne and her partner Matteo (Diego Luna) after a car crash, which leaves them in a disorienting, surreal state in which they relive their history together - from their fond beginnings to the hard truths in their present. They can't face their uncertain future, with their newborn daughter's wellbeing at stake, until they reflect on their past. Director Tara Miele, whose own car accident inspired her to write the film, told EW at SCAD that it was "quite cathartic" to share her story with the world. For her, the film's themes surrounding the value of life were amplified following Kobe Bryant's unexpected death, which happened the day after they screened the film at Sundance. "I was in my head - you're at Sundance, it's quite noisy, and there's all this craziness going on," Miele said. "When that happened, I just remember thinking, 'Right, that's why you made this movie, because [life] is so delicate. It's so precious. And none of this is really 'the thing,' right? The thing is your family and the people you love and the time you have.'"Miller's recent performances - in Wander Darkly as well as in 2018's American Woman, another complex indie centered around a woman dealing with tragedy - have earned her career-high reviews. The veteran performer spoke to EW about roles for women in 2020 and what she looks for in a film."I'm always looking to be challenged. I think the roles are a little better, I think people are more focused on more fully-fledged female characters in cinema," Miller said. "I was just fortunate to find two really rich people to play. I also think being a woman is messy and complicated and hard and emotional. And they felt very real to me, very grounded in a sense of reality. And that's what I'm always looking for is, 'Does this tell the truth about the human experience from a female perspective?'"Wander Darkly arrives in select theaters and on-demand Dec. 11. It also stars Beth Grant, Aimee Carrero, Tory Kittles, Brett Rice, and Vanessa Bayer. The trailer is here: https://ew.com/movies/trailers/sienna-miller-confronts-life-death-wander-darkly-trailer/SIENNA MILLER BIOSienna Miller was born in New York, educated in England, and studied drama at the Lee Strasberg Institute. In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.In this episode we look at the career of Ben Affleck, who rose to fame in the early days of Kevin Smith with indie hits like CHASING AMY and MALLRATS, as well as a memorable turn in Richard Linklater's DAZED AND CONFUSED. However, it was his co-scripting and acting in GOOD WILL HUNTING that really put him on the map and opened up doors for all types of leading man roles, including Michael Bay's ARMAGEDDON and PEARL HARBOR, John Frankenheimer's REINDEER GAMES, the Tom Clancy adaptation THE SUM OF ALL FEARS and the lead in Marvel's DAREDEVIL. However, he hit a snag at GIGLI with then spouse Jennifer Lopez and did a number of smaller films before emerging as a director with THE TOWN. From there, Affleck was on fire again, following up with another directorial gig, ARGO, which took home the gold. He continued this hot streak with David Fincher's GONE GIRL before becoming a superhero again, this time for Zack Snyder's BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and JUSTICE LEAGUE. From there his next directorial effort, LIVE BY NIGHT, fizzled and Affleck's personal life suffered as well, battling divorce and alcoholism. The actor sought help and worked hard to get sober, next appearing in THE WAY BACK, which tackles those very demons. Affleck has a number of projects lined up from here and is looking healthy and strong yet again, ready to deliver more good work on top of his already massively impressive resume. Also, he was the BOMB in PHANTOMS, yo!
Ben Affleck plays a Mexican in 'Argo', a movie about how Islam is bad, and somehow that's less offensive than 'Live by Night', a film in which Brendan Gleeson is forced to sit next to Sienna Miller's awful Irish accent (that's not why it's offensive, it's offensive cause it sucks...or does it?). Where is Matt Damon? Acting under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction film, a CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979. A group of Boston-bred gangsters set up shop in balmy Florida during the Prohibition era, facing off against the competition and the Ku Klux Klan. Each week we take the best and worst films from a filmmaker or franchise and discuss why one worked and one didn't. And we use freakin maths to determine the best and worst, so no arguing. Unless you think science is wrong???...yeah thought so.
