I dunno, man - I think this mutually-agreed arrangement is a little undercooked. Mike White drops by again to discuss Raw Deal (1948), directed by Anthony Mann, and then, you guessed it, Raw Deal (1986), directed by John Irvin. Listen as we gasp in wonder at Mann's sumptuous shadowy cinematography and Arnie's enormous pectorals. What do these films have in common other than their names? Probably not a lot, but we sure have a lot of fun discussing them. It's not really possible to spoil Raw Deal '86 because that would require you to be able to make some sense out of its plot, but we will call out Spoiler Territory for Raw Deal '48. If you want to skip ahead from that point, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:06:02 mark to avoid spoilers. Want to get in touch? And now for something completely different... featuring one of past guests & fellow authors Ace Atkins, Megan Abbott, & William Boyle's dearest friends. The first half of this week's episode with Oxford, Mississippi based ADVENTURE TIME & SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS screenwriter, voice actor, & author Jack Pendarvis is a freewheeling anything goes conversation about writing, shovels, William Faulkner cosplay, hitchhiking with butter knives, Saint Augustine, showers, & anything else that popped into our heads. Taking a look at two films about the creative process in the more classically Watch With Jen formatted second half of this discussion, we investigate two of Jack's favorite movies in director Anthony Mann's classic musical biopic THE GLENN MILLER STORY & one of Pedro Almodovar's greatest masterworks, PAIN AND GLORY. This season, I'm aiming to sprinkle in some more casual conversations with artists of all backgrounds into our traditional friendly analytic approach because right now, it feels like we're all so isolated, stressed, & wary that I'm hoping these occasional offbeat episodes might spark a little joy, discovery, & creativity for you along the way as well.Originally Posted on Patreon (4/7/25) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/126066237Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive
By gar, it's a good old fashioned Letterboxd Collab! Dr Ethan Lyon and Sakana join forces to help us deliver a little shot of bonus episode classic western joy, as we share our thoughts on Anthony Mann's Winchester '73 (1950). Jimmy Stewart in dark and vengeful mode, Shelley Winters as comely young blonde, Stephen McNally being dastardly, Dan Duryea sliming up the screen (bless his cotton socks) and Rock Hudson as a politically incorrect Indian Chief. All saddled up and ridden like the clappers by the great Anthony Mann. Yee har!!! We do have a Spoiler Territory section for Winchester '73, so you can skip ahead to the 1:02:57 mark to avoid spoilers if you haven't seen the film. We've been featuring a taste of the large body of radio work of actor Jimmy Stewart. Jimmy appeared on hundreds of radio shows across his career, and many radio adaptations of his films. He also had his own radio series for a short time in the 1950s, when he was doing mostly westerns. Today we're closing out this tribute with “The Six Shooter.” The series was far less gritty than his Anthony Mann films, and focused on stories that were often more family-oriented and feel-good than action-packed. Welcome to the At The Flicks archive. This one is a real blast from the past! Recently Graham was rummaging around in the At The Flicks vault and fell over some old recording cans that had been left on the floor. Luckily Graham had been drinking that day, or he might have swerved passed them by and this show would still be sitting there! After swearing and moaning about his now sore leg, Graham checked the cans and realised it was an unreleased edition of our very popular Rediscovering the classic with Elijah series. It is our discussion about the classic historical epic El Cid (1961). Apart from Jeff and Graham, the team for this episode comprised, of course Elijah, and a voice we miss on the show. Neil. For those of you not familiar with the film, it stars Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren and is a bio pic about legendary Spanish hero Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (aka El Cid), a knight who lived in the 11th Century. Normally it is Elijah who is discovering the film for the first time. Not here, this time it's Jeff and Graham who are seeing it with fresh eyes for the first time (although both have seen it before – don't worry it's all explained in the show). Other things discussed in this podcast: - Why the main stars didn't like each other - What film director Anthony Mann got fired from just before this (and also Jeff initially getting his facts wrong) - Miklos Rozsa's score and the use of trumpets - Herbert Lom not being politically correct - Correlation to Dune It's fascinating to hear the old team back together again. Who knows, there may be more life in rediscovering the classics to come. Until then bye for now and see you At The Flicks.
After some time off for Sundance, Movie Madness returns to get you caught up on the latest and greatest in Blu-rays. Erik Childress talks to Peter Sobczynski about a couple 4K upgrades from Criterion for Paul Thomas Anderson and Anthony Mann. There are rom-coms with Cary Grant and Clark Gable while Al Pacino tries to find love with possibly a serial killer. They've got a possessed authoritarian in the White House (from 1933) and a killer whale on the loose. Music documentaries for Joan Jett and Joan Baez and one of Dario Argento's best. But it all comes down to a remastered version of a butchered Michael Mann film and a trio of upgrades for one of the kings of sexploitation, Russ Meyer. 0:00 - Intro 2:48 - Criterion (Winchester ‘73 4K, Punch Drunk Love 4K) 19:34 - Warner Archive (Gabriel Over the White House) 26:40 - Kino (Houseboat, Teacher's Pet, Shout at the Devil, Orca 4K, Sea of Love 4K, Whore) 1:09:47 - Magnolia (Bad Reputation, Joan Baez I am a Noise) 1:15:25 - Severin (Opera 4K, Vixen 4K, Supervixens 4K, Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens 4K) 1:56:33 - Vinegar Syndrome (The Keep 4K) 2:10:53 – New TV on Blu-ray: (House: Complete Series, Quantum Leap (2022): Complete Series, Frankenstein Jr. And the Impossibles: Complete Series, Wait Til Your Father Gets Home: Complete Series, Twin Peaks Z to A) 2:15:52 - New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray (The Coffee Table, Hundreds of Beavers, Juror #2, A Real Pain, Werewolves, Wicked) 2:16:37 – New Blu-ray Announcements

CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence. Aaron and Carlee from the Hit Factory podcast return from San Francisco to discuss one of Anthony Mann's best films, the psychological western Man of the West, starring Gary Cooper in one of his final performances as a former outlaw who has worked to get away from his sordid past and rebuild his life, only to find himself by circumstance back in league with the very “family” of killers who raised him, in a classic film noir scenario transposed to the Western genre. Jean-Luc Godard hailed Man of the West as the best film of 1958 and in this episode we discuss the psycho-sexual complexities of this western and how it pointed the way to the future of American cinema including the horror genre, how like Michael Mann's Manhunter it implicates the audience by depicting an “audience” within the movie forced to watch sexually-charged violence unfold, and the modernity of the performances by Lee J. Cobb as the crazed paterfamilias of the killers and the singer Julie London as the “saloon singer” held hostage by the gang. We also discuss what this film has to say about violence as the substance that forged Western expansion and which, as we've seen in the wake of Donald Trump's re-election, still courses through the American bloodstream today.

In this special episode, we feature highlights from our recent webinar, exploring how we can collectively support more young Australians to achieve success at school and beyond.Currently, one in four young Australians aren't completing year 12 or the equivalent – and the rate is much higher for young people experiencing disadvantage. Yet we know that higher educational attainment is associated with positive social and economic outcomes. This episode includes valuable insights from The Smith Family's Head of Research and Advocacy, Anne Hampshire, on our ongoing research into post-school pathways with over 2,000 young Australians, and a personal story from Cindy, a tertiary student on our Learning for Life program, who offers her perspective on what young people need to make a positive transition from school to further study or work. On the twenty- second episode of ATFT, film historian/ author/ lecturer Max Alvarez joins me in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Chinatown! This episode is spoiler- filled. Chinatown, a neo- noir thriller directed by Roman Polanski, is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time. The film is set in 1937 Los Angeles and follows J.J. “Jake” Gittes, a private investigator played brilliantly by Jack Nicholson, as he is, initially, hired by a woman to uncover the details of her husband's, Hollis Mulwray, affair, a man who is the head of the water department. From there, the story unfolds in unanticipated ways. What started as an investigation into an affair leads to the uncovering of a deceitful plot involving Mulwray's former partner as co- head of the water department, Noah Cross (John Huston). Chinatown deals with corruption, greed, and the advantages of having money, which by extension, comes with power. The film also stars Faye Dunaway who plays Evelyn Mulwray, Hollis Mulwray's wife and Jake's “partner- in crime” in solving this expansive and disturbing case. Chinatown won one Oscar, for Robert Towne's famously masterful screenplay, and earned ten nominations. This is Max's second guest appearance on ATFT! He was the guest on the very first episode of the “wide- release” of ATFT. I was so honored that Max agreed to be my first interview and I am just as honored that he agreed to return to discuss this excellent film! Since our interview, we have maintained a consistent correspondence via e-mail where we keep each other updated on our projects as well as discuss certain films. This episode was recorded on June 6, 2024. Max Alvarez is a guest lecturer at both New Plaza Cinema in NYC and the Smithsonian Institute. On the day this episode releases, Max will be giving a Zoom lecture on “The Cinema of Billy Wilder” and the next day, he will be giving another Zoom lecture on Wilder's film, Sunset Boulevard. Stay updated on Max's upcoming lectures for New Plaza Cinema by going to the “Lectures” tab on newplazacinema.org. Max has also written three books, two of which, The Crime Films of Anthony Mann and The Cinephile's Guide to the Great Age of Cinema, are available for purchase on Barnes and Noble's website. In this episode, Max shares some history about the making of Chinatown from Robert Towne's screenplay, which is often regarded as “the greatest screenplay of all time” to Jerry Goldsmith's score. I compared Chinatown to two films: one that was recently Oscar- nominated and the other being an Italian film from the 60s. Max and I also analyze the film's mysteries as well as characters Jake Gittes and Noah Cross and discuss the famous ending of the film, including the drastic last minute changes made to Chinatown's original ending.

In this very special episode, Amartya, Aryan, and Dhruv discuss the different styles of the Hollywood Western from its "birth" in 1939 to its "death" in 1968. We begin by discussing John Ford's 1939 film, "Stagecoach," singlehandedly responsible for resuscitating the A-Movie Western for the talkies in Hollywood's Pre-War Era. It provides us with a broad template for archetypes and narratives that -- through repetition -- became movie conventions for reasons both good and bad. Fast forward to the Golden Era of the Hollywood Westerns, particularly the Post-War period -- and you see filmmakers like Anthony Mann beginning to question these conventions while still largely adhering to them in his 1950 film, "Winchester '73." The fondly remembered Spaghetti Westerns of the '60s push even further in this direction, with Sergio Leone's 1968 film, "Once Upon a Time in the West," simultaneously homaging the West and deflating America's constructed myths. Listen to the full episode for our deep dive into each film and the historical context that defined their varied narratives and aesthetic styles!
After nearly thirty feature films as a director, and another several dozen credits as a stunt performer and coordinator on major Hollywood blockbusters, filmmaker JESSE V. JOHNSON Is wrapping up work on no fewer than three action features to be released in 2023. With the western-influence crime drama “One Ranger” (with Thomas Jane and John Malkovich), the period action adventure “Boudica” (with Olga Kurylenko, “Quantum of Solace”), and the CIA spy thriller “Chief of Station” (starring Kurylenko and Aaron Eckhart), Johnson continues to bring new life, energy, and imagination to the world of action-oriented filmmaking. Growing up the Winchester, UK, Johnson was raised far from the trappings of show business, but fell in love with the cinematic art form through watching great westerns and other classics that gave him a unique sense of the storytelling possibilities of the American west. “My heroes are John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, Anthony Mann, Budd Boeticher,” he says. “Their films often reflected characters pushed to the very limits of their endurance, they were universal themes and timeless.” That can certainly be seen in Johnson's first release this year, “One Ranger,” which features Thomas Jane as a modern-day Texas Ranger who is recruited by British intelligence to help stop a potential terrorist attack on the UK. The dogged, relentless pursuit for justice gives hero Ranger Alex Tyree a strong moral compass that compliments his extraordinary skills as a tracker. getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org

Welcome to It's A Wonderful Podcast!! It seems a Westerns series has started on the main show as Morgan and Jeannine have decided to take the next few weeks to celebrate this often-times misunderstood and undervalued genre. We had a rollicking romp last week with Jimmy Stewart's first Western 'Destry Rides Again' and he's back this week too with the final of his five Westerns he made with director Anthony Mann as Morgan and Jeannine talk THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (1955)! A deceptive and subtle movie, visually beautiful yet full of characters straining their true feelings. In their second episode devoted to the classical Hollywood genres, Ryan and Todd explore the western by focusing on some of the most popular and some of the most theoretically compelling. They discuss directors John Ford, Howard Hawks, and Anthony Mann, as well as devoting time to the western 3:10 to Yuma. Their theorization of the western stresses the way that the genre lays out the social antagonism between law and lawlessness, in which the western hero functions as a vanishing mediator.

Kim Kardashian has been apprenticing with two lawyers for the past few years to become a lawyer herself in California. Apprenticeships like Kardashian's “reading law” and vocational education training are career pathways that not enough young people are considering when deciding on what to do after high school. And maybe they're not thinking about what happens after graduation because schools aren't getting them “career ready” enough. New analysis of national longitudinal datasets and 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) data show that it's good for job markets and young people's life outcomes when students start thinking about their future early on. Specifically, students whose schools organised first-hand encounters with people from the work world can expect to experience less unemployment and a greater likelihood of better-paying and fulfilling careers. Anthony Mann, senior policy analyst in the OECD's Education and Skills directorate, talks to us about career readiness, apprenticeships and vocational educational training. Or perhaps we should say British Anti-Bond Spy Films in the ‘60s. Everybody knows midcentury cinema was spy crazy, but it also goes without saying that these spy films were largely modeled after the action-packed espionage found in James Bond and very little on the kind of work actual spies do. What links the films in our latest Bootleg Bond episode is the common goal on the part of a number of British production companies to demonstrate that there's plenty of drama to be found in a more realistic portrayal of spy work.In this episode, Bart and Jenna take a dutch-angled romp through a series of nihilistic films that make zero effort to glamorize the life of a spy. They investigate how each of these chosen films work to subvert a different aspect of the Bond phenomena – from the sex and honor, down to the cinematic structure – and have an absolute blast doing it. The following films are discussed:• Ring of Spies (1964) Directed by Robert Tronson Starring Bernard Lee, William Sylvester, Margaret Tyzack• The Ipcress File (1965) Directed by Sidney J. Furie Starring Michael Caine, Nigel Green, Guy Doleman• The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) Directed by Martin Ritt Starring Richard Burton, Oskar Werner, Claire Bloom• The Quiller Memorandum (1966) Directed by Michael Anderson Starring George Segal, Alec Guinness, Senta Berger• The Deadly Affair (1967) Directed by Sidney Lumet Starring James Mason, Maximilian Schell, Simone Signoret• A Dandy in Aspic (1968) Directed by Anthony Mann & Laurence Harvey Starring Laurence Harvey, Tom Courtenay, Mia Farrow
Mike and Pax watch another Barbara Stanwyck western, The Furies, this time directed by the great Anthony Mann.

Should we give the land back? The final episode of the series dives into that question.
