Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Do you know who these chaps are? The fact that I am describing them as “chaps” gives the hint that they are British. And in fact they are the British singing duo of Bob and Alf Pearson. You’ll find out all about them in the final segment of this week’s show. But before that, you hear other birthday segments for Aubrey Stauffer, Adolph Hofner and Billy Hays. Billy Hays actually gets two birthday segments! One for the real Billy Hays and one for Billy Hays used as a pseudonym by Sam Lanin’s Famous Players! There's lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Without his trademark battered top hat and clarinet you might not recognize the person above as bandleader, instrumentalist and vocalist Ted Lewis. This photograph is from the late 1910s, probably aboard RMS Olympic. The “High-Hatted Tragedian of Song” will be getting a birthday segment with three of his records not heard on the show before. Howard Johnson will also have a birthday segment and other topics include Joe Raymond, “someday” and “dearie.” There's lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Less than a year ago, Jess was commuting to her healthcare job in Australia, feeling exhausted, overworked, and secretly wondering if there had to be more to life than the traditional path. Now?She's in Bali ( recording with me in a live studio) building her own location-independent business, signing clients online, working from her laptop, and literally on the cusp of fully replacing her income. The craziest part is that Jess didn't start out knowing anything about marketing, sales, entrepreneurship, or online business. But she did take the leap and invested in herself to jumpstart her digital nomad life she was dreaming about. She decided to stop letting her limiting beliefs run the show… everything started changing FAST.Today we are talking about: what it actually feels like to become a digital nomad the identity shift that happens when you quit your job and start working for yourself why “good jobs” can still feel deeply misaligned overcoming fear of failure AND fear of success building a business that supports your energy instead of draining it how to create a life where you can get paid to travel why healthcare workers are often secretly amazing entrepreneurs employee mindset vs entrepreneur mindset creating freedom without needing to completely burn your life down Jess also explains: How she was feeling emotionally drained from back-to-back client work why she never felt like she fully fit into the traditional system the moment she realized remote work could actually be HER reality what it's like to finally experience true flexibility and freedom how entrepreneurship completely changed the way she thinks Things We Talk About In This Episode: Becoming a digital nomad in healthcare Starting a remote business from scratch Quitting a traditional career Building a location-independent life How to get paid to travel Entrepreneurship and ADHD Burnout from 9-5 work Creating freedom through online business Limiting beliefs around success Why remote work changes your entire life Connect with Jess: Follow Jess and her journey here:@jess_mercieca

Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Do you know who this fellow is? He's pianist, bandleader and band broker Jean Goldkette and you’ll hear from and about him in the third segment of this week’s show. I say in the intro to the segment that he was born March 18th, 1893 in Patras, Greece. but the date and place of his birth remain a matter of conjecture. May 18 of that year is the date Goldkette provided to the US government. He also claimed 1894, 1897, and 1899 as years of birth. Not only his date and place of birth are disputed, but he may or may not have been the same person as Constantin Goldkette, born in Avignon, France in 1895. He gave his own birthplace as Valenciennes, France. His mother, Angelina Goldkette, was of Danish birth. None of this, however, detracts from the fabulous music he made and you’ll hear three of his recordings not heard on the show before. We’ll also celebrate the birthdays of George Olsen, Mort Dixon and Frank Hutchison. And you’ll hear more from Rupe Biggadike. Let's put on a show! It's season 8 for Paul and Corey Cross the Streams, and this season we're watching musicals. It's a singular art form with a dynamic history, and we get to listen to a lot of cast recordings... For his first episode, Corey chose the international smash-hit, the Tollywood (India) film, RRR (2022). Directed and written by S. S. Rajamouli, the film is a fictional and fictionalized account of the meeting of two Indian revolutionaries, Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, during the British Raj. The film is a blast: action-packed, singing and dancing, compelling drama, excellent VFX, brilliant (fight) choreography, and more, as it tells the exciting story of rising up against colonial oppression. But. The film exists in a political and economic context, specifically the current rule of Hindu nationalism and the long-established caste system in India, that international viewers might not know or understand. And for as much fun as it is to root for our protagonists in their fight against racist imperialism and colonialism, the film may not be as progressive in its political positions on oppression and exploitation as it purports. It's a nuanced and interesting conversation on a thrilling film.
Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. I didn’t have time to make the correction on this week’s show, but on last week’s show I completely left out the details on the first record in the segment about cake, “Cut Yourself A Piece Of Cake (And Make Yourself At Home.)” It was Joseph Samuels’ Orchestra with the vocal by Arthur Hall on Grey Gull 1172 recorded in June of 1923. It was also issued on the Banner, Regal, Broadway and Triangle labels. On this week’s show, as you might guess from the photo above, we’ll play some records about Odocoileus hemionus, the scientific name for the Mule Deer. There’s a huge controversy taking place on Catalina Island over the approximately 2,000 deer on the island, first introduced for hunting in the 1930s and you’ll find out a little bit about it. In other segments, Johnny Dunn, Jack Jackson and Victor Vorzanger all have birthday segments. And we’ll take a musical trip to Harlem. Do you know who this lovely lady is? Her name is Kristi Turner. She’s not a composer, lyricist or musician, so why is she featured in the playlist of this week’s Rapidly Rotating Records? Kristi is the co-founder, along with her husband Ross, of Guided Discoveries, where I had the pleasure of working for more than a quarter century. Ross passed away unexpectedly last October and I dedicated a segment of the November 2 show to him. Kristi passed away just two months later and today, February 15, her family, friends and co-workers are gathering for a celebration of her life. In the first segment of this week’s show, you’ll hear little bit about Kristi and a number of records about a couple of her interests, dude ranches and horses. In other segments, Jimmy Durante gets a birthday segment and we’ll hear from Fred Spinelly. In the third segment, we’ll have our cake and listen to it, too! China will cut interest rates on targeted monetary policy tools and expand related quotas to spur lending in key areas and improve market expectations, underscoring policymakers' resolve to support a solid economic start to the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period, officials and experts said. Zou Lan, vice-governor of the People's Bank of China, said on Thursday that the central bank will reduce interest rates of various structural monetary instruments by 0.25 percentage points as it implements a moderately accommodative monetary policy, with the one-year rate on central bank lending facilities to be lowered from 1.5 percent to 1.25 percent. 1.25%。Interest rates for other maturities will be adjusted accordingly, with effect from Monday. Speaking at a news conference, Zou said the quota of key structural monetary instruments will be expanded. This includes a central bank lending quota worth 1 trillion yuan ($143.4 billion) to support small and medium-sized private companies, and a 400 billion yuan increase in the central bank lending quota for technological innovation and upgrades, bringing the total to 1.2 trillion yuan. In terms of broad-based easing measures, Zou said there remains room this year for benchmark interest rate cuts and reductions in the reserve requirement ratio, or RRR — the proportion of deposits that banks must hold as reserves, which now stands at 6.3 percent on average. 6.3%。"Overall, the exchange rate does not pose a strong constraint (on interest rate cuts)," Zou said. Domestically, he said that net interest margins of banks started to stabilize in 2025, and that the latest reduction in rates on structural policy tools will further lower funding costs of banks, making room for broad-based rate cuts.“总体来看,汇率并未对降息形成明显制约。” Lou Feipeng, a researcher at the Postal Savings Bank of China, said the policy package has sent a clear signal of targeted easing, helping anchor market expectations while strengthening the precision and sustainability of financial support for the real economy. With banks' net interest margins stabilizing and about 50 trillion yuan of medium- to long-term deposits set to mature in 2026, expectations for a first-quarter RRR cut have strengthened. Heavy government bond issuance in January and related liquidity demand could further raise the odds of such a move," Lou said. Zou, the central bank vice-governor, vowed to increase liquidity injections and flexibly conduct open market operations of buying and selling government bonds to create a supportive monetary and financial environment for the smooth issuance of government debt. Zou added that the minimum down payment ratio for loans to purchase commercial properties will be lowered to 30 percent to help reduce inventory in the commercial real estate market. Ming Ming, chief economist at CITIC Securities, said, "Given current capital market conditions, the new policies — cutting rates on structural tools while keeping an active tone on broad-based measures — will serve the dual goals of stabilizing market expectations and preventing asset bubbles." According to Zou, the renminbi exchange rate is expected to continue "moving in both directions with flexibility", with China's vast market and complete industrial chain to help offset external uncertainties.

We’ll be celebrating three other birthdays this week as well, for Arthur Johnston, Clifford Grey and Mel Stitzel. We start off the show with a segment about apparel. There's lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. China's consumer inflation accelerated to its fastest pace in nearly three years in December, official data showed on Friday, signaling a stabilizing economy as recent stimulus measures continued to bolster domestic demand.Going forward, analysts said consumer inflation is expected to remain mild through 2026, leaving ample room for policymakers to step up macroeconomic adjustment to counter mounting uncertainties. Policy options include targeted measures to boost domestic demand and support innovation, as well as further cuts to the reserve requirement ratio and interest rates. The country's consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, rose by 0.8 percent year-on-year in December, following a 0.7 percent rise in November, marking the highest level since February 2023, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday."China's latest consumer inflation data points to a continued strengthening in domestic demand, mainly driven by the impact of consumption-boosting policies and the release of demand ahead of the New Year holiday," said Tang Guang hua, an analyst at Shen yin & Wan guo Futures Co. "Meanwhile, the core CPI remained above 1 percent for four consecutive months in December, highlighting a steady improvement in consumption fundamentals."The improving inflation data has reflected the growing momentum of the Chinese economy, with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Asian Development Bank having raised their growth forecasts for China's economy. The IMF forecasts a 5 percent GDP expansion in 2025 and 4.5 percent for 2026, while Goldman Sachs said this week that it expects China's GDP to grow 4.8 percent in real terms in 2026, supported by a policy-backed investment rebound, the potential of service consumption, resilient export growth and a milder drag of the property sector. With economic momentum showing signs of improving, Chinese stocks moved higher on Friday, with the Shanghai Composite Index posting a solid gain of 0.92 percent to close at 4,120.43 points, topping the psychologically important 4,100 points to reach a decade high. Since the beginning of the year, the index has risen by 3.82 percent, indicating a continuous improvement in investor confidence.NBS data showed the core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices and is deemed a better gauge of supply-demand conditions, rose 1.2 percent year-on-year in December, unchanged from November.Meanwhile, China's producer price index — which measures factory-gate prices — fell by 1.9 percent year-on-year in December, narrowing from a 2.2 percent drop in November, the NBS said.Tang from Shenyin & Wanguo Futures Co said the narrowing decline in factory-gate prices showed strengthening recovery momentum, signaling both improving industrial fundamentals and deeper structural optimization. He expects consumer prices to rise steadily on the back of continued consumption recovery and policy support, while PPI recovery momentum is set to strengthen further given the progress in building a unified national market, industrial restructuring and rising demand from emerging industries as key drivers, particularly for high-end manufacturing. As the NBS is set to release the economic indicators for December and the fourth quarter later this month, Li Chao, chief economist at Zheshang Securities, said China's economic growth is expected to have remained resilient toward the end of 2025, fueled by relatively strong production and a gradual recovery in demand. He said that economic activity likely picked up in December, with both domestic and external demand gradually improving and companies pushing to meet year-end targets. "That will help support China to achieve its full-year growth target of around 5 percent in 2025, while laying the groundwork for a strong start in 2026."During the recently held 2026 work conference of the People's Bank of China, the country's central bank said it will continue to implement an appropriately accommodative monetary policy in 2026, underscoring its commitment to supporting high-quality economic development and promoting a reasonable rebound in prices.Li from Zheshang Securities said his team expects a 50 basis-point cut in the RRR and a 10 basis-point reduction in policy interest rates over the year.Li added that structural policy tools are expected to continue to play a key role, alongside stronger credit guidance to channel funding toward priority areas.Expanding domestic demand, advancing technological innovation and supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises are likely to remain the main focus of policy support in 2026, he said.

Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Once again, for about the 15th time, Rita and I were in Rancho Cordova, California the week-end before Thanksgiving for the 39th Annual West Coast Ragtime Festival, put on thanks to the tireless efforts of many volunteers from the West Coast Ragtime Society. We had a fabulous time as always, seeing old friends, musicians and non, making new friends, listening to wonderful music performed by some of the finest musicians in the world, and enjoying plenty of fine food and drink. There was almost 120 hours of music over three days, and this show represents less that 1% of that music. It’s primarily 78 RPM records of tunes played at the festival along with several vintage piano rolls performed by the composers. There's lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era.
