Listeners of Big Game Hunting Podcast that love the show mention:The Big Game Hunting Podcast is an exceptional podcast that I have been listening to for the past two years. As a hunter, I am always eager to learn and this podcast does not disappoint in providing valuable information and insights. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or someone dreaming of hunting big game around the world, this podcast covers a wide range of topics that will help you navigate the hunting world with confidence.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the wealth of knowledge and expertise shared by John McAdams and his guests. From calibers to rifles, gear, and other pertinent topics, they provide valuable insights that can aid hunters in making informed decisions. In particular, the episodes focusing on African safari hunts are incredibly helpful for anyone planning such an adventure. The caliber comparisons and discussions on different types of cartridges also provide valuable information for hunters looking to make informed choices about their equipment.
While there are numerous positive aspects to this podcast, it is important to mention that some episodes may not be relevant to all listeners. The focus on specific themes such as African hunting or cartridge comparisons may not appeal to every listener, especially those who are more interested in other types of hunting or do not own firearms. However, even with these occasional deviations from personal preferences, the overall quality and value of information provided make up for any potential drawbacks.
In conclusion, The Big Game Hunting Podcast is a must-listen for anyone involved in hunting or those who aspire to hunt big game anywhere in the world. With its informative content and entertaining approach, this podcast offers a wealth of knowledge that will benefit both experienced hunters and newcomers to the sport. John McAdams does an excellent job breaking down complex topics into easily understandable discussions while also providing practical advice and recommendations. My father, Kevin McAdams joins me in this episode to discuss three African safaris where he used classic and indeed unusual rifles and cartridges like 22 Hornet, 33 WCF, 577/450 Martini Henry, 45-70, and 50-110 Winchester. We'll discuss how those cartridges performed over there along with several fascinating stories from those hunts involving animals like aardwolf, cheetah, honey badger, mongoose, and owl that go well beyond some of the animals typically featured in Africa hunting stories. Adam Wies (aka Who Tee Who on YouTube) is back on the show and we discuss a subject I know you'll enjoy: our favorite cartridges for hunting virtually any species of big game. We're play little game where Adam and I each list our favorite cartridge and bullet for hunting specific species of game ranging from coues whitetail all the way up to thick skinned species of African game like cape buffalo and elephant and almost everything in between like mule deer, elk, black bear, etc. The catch is we cannot reuse a cartridge for multiple species. Even so, our discussion provides an interesting glimpse into the thought process he and I each use for selecting cartridges and bullets for hunting different species of game. John Snow of Outdoor Life shares insights on modern cartridge design in this podcast interview, explaining why rounds like the 6.5 Creedmoor have a crucial edge. Sponsor: Go to BigGameHuntingPodcast.com/ebook and sign up for my free e-book on the best hunting calibers at to receive the entertaining and informative emails I send out about hunting, firearms, and ballistics every weekday. In this episode of The Big Game Hunting Podcast, host John McAdams welcomes John Snow, Outdoor Life's shooting editor, for his first appearance on the show. They discuss modern cartridge design and focus on how the polarizing 6.5 Creedmoor embodies many of these design principles and how those characteristics distinguish the 6.5 Creedmoor from similarly performing cartridges like the 260 Remington and 6.5x55 Swede. They also discuss John Snow's experiences with the cutting edge 7mm Backcountry and some of the pitfalls and potential game changing benefits of that brand new design. The big takeaway? There's a reason why cartridges like the 6.5 Creedmoor are so popular and effective and it's not limited just to Hornady's aggressive and effective marketing (though that certainly plays a part too). Tyler Freel shares insights on hunting big game with the 338 Lapua Magnum in this podcast interview, focusing on terminal performance, favorite loads, and recoil management. Sponsor: Go to https://BigGameHuntingPodcast.com/ebook and sign up for my free e-book on the best hunting calibers at to receive the entertaining and informative emails I send out about hunting, firearms, and ballistics every weekday. In this episode of The Big Game Hunting Podcast, host John McAdams sits down with Tyler Freel to explore the 338 Lapua Magnum—a cartridge renowned for its power and extended range performance. Unlike past discussions with Tyler on smaller rounds, this interview dives into the mighty 338 Lapua Magnum's big game hunting potential. Tyler recounts how he first got hooked on the 338 Lapua, drawn by its long-range ballistics and ability to anchor massive animals like moose. He details a few instances of taking moose with a 285gr Hornady ELD Match (SD: 0.356) performed on moose at ranges from 200-550 yards. Tyler compares the 338 Lapua to the 338 Win Mag and 300 PRC, noting its edge in energy retention, but also in recoil. On reloading, Tyler favors slow-burning powders like Retumbo, H1000, and RL-26 to achieve ~2,700 fps of muzzle velocity with 285-grain Hornady ELD Match bullets that slip gracefully through the air, but still perform incredibly well on even the biggest moose. Tyler's takeaway? The 338 Lapua isn't for everyone, but it's a solid performer for use on really big game at extended range. Plus, it's tough to beat the cool factor that comes with this round! Today we're going to talk about two completely different rounds: the 45-70 Government and the 308 Winchester. Is the new 22 Creedmoor just the latest fad? Or does it offer significant benefits to hunters compared to more established 22 caliber centerfires like the 22-250 Remington? Today, Derrick Ratliff from Horizon Firearms joins me on the show as we talk about this new hot rod 22 caliber and he shares some insights on why he first started wildcatting the 22 Creedmoor, what uses he thinks the best use cases are for it, what his favorite bullets are for the cartridge, what factory rifle and ammo availability is like right now, and what the future holds for the 22 Creedmoor. Larry Weishuhn, also known as "Mr. Whitetail" joins me on the show today to talk about some of the finer points of whitetail deer hunting. I've always wanted to sit down with an accomplished deer hunter and wildlife biologist Larry and pepper him with specific questions about how to take my deer hunting game to the next level. Well, that's what we do today and we discuss all sorts of burning questions I've had about deer hunting like whether or not it's really a good idea to urinate on deer scrapes, how to determine the exact day that's best for tagging a mature buck during the rut, what exactly is going on during the October lull, and much more. Today, we're going to talk about bullet failures. Bullet failures are a hot topic, especially when they involve certain, very polarizing bullets and/or cartridges. I absolutely believe they do occur, but I think they get blamed unfairly for a lot of wounded and lost game. I can't tell you how many people I've had tell me they made a perfect shot, but the bullet “blew up on the shoulder” and the animal ran off, never to be seen again. Like I said, bullet failures do occur though and I've compiled a giant list of those sorts of stories to share with you in this episode. Today we're going to talk about 2 22 caliber cartridges designed for use in America's favorite gun in the AR-15 platform: the 223 Remington and the 22 ARC. Today, I discuss all of the other .30 caliber cartridges I didn't cover in episode 286. None of these rounds use a .308" bullet, but all are still .30 caliber cartridges and most fill a similar niche as the .308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield in various parts of the world. Where appropriate, I'll also share some personal anecdotes involving these rounds as well as some observations involving various cartridges by noteworthy gun writers as well. Tyler Freel is back on the show today to talk about a recent moose hunt where he cleanly killed a nice bull with the new 22 Advanced Rifle Cartridge using his AR-15. I Feel like I owe it to my audience to give them the best and most accurate information possible and sometimes that involves challenging previously held beliefs about what people think you “need” to hunt certain animals. This is one of those episodes. So was one of Tyler's previous appearances on the show with me in ep 282 where he talks about killing a grizzly bear with the 6.5 Creedmoor. You are of course welcome to disagree with us, all I ask is that you keep an open mind as Tyler and I discuss this hunt in detail. As you'll discover shortly, the little 22 ARC delivered surprisingly good terminal performance on a big Alaskan bull moose and we discuss why that was the case in great detail today. Sometimes you just find a rifle that just flat out works: it fits you well, it's not excessively large or heavy, has a nice trigger, it's easy to shoot accurately, it's not finicky and doesn't require an extensive break-in process, and seems like it loves all the ammo you feed it. Well, Bergara's new Wilderness Sierra rifle checks all of those boxes for me. I used that rifle on my recent moose hunt and I'm thrilled with how it performed. Mike Arnold is up next in my ongoing Africa hunting mini-series to talk about bushbuck and nyala. These two species of spiral horned antelope are both magnificent creatures that, as different as they may appear at first glance, also share a few surprising similarities. In fact, they also live in some of the same areas and even compete with each other for food (to the detriment of one of them). Mike and I discuss these two species in detail: where they live, what they look like, how they behave, how they're commonly hunted, and how these antelope species are similar and different from each other, and some of the ongoing observations scientists and PHs are making regarding how one of these species is often coming out on the losing end of how they are competing with each other in certain areas. The “quarter bore” section of the ballistics world doesn't get a lot of love, certainly not when compared to the smaller 6mm, or larger 6.5mm, 270 cal, 7mm, or 30 cal bore diameters. Even so, the various 25 caliber cartridges have a very rich history and there some very interesting stories associated with them. In this episode, I hit the highlights of all of the 25 caliber SAAMI certified cartridges (plus a couple of other noteworthy rounds) and discuss their history, legacy, their strengths and weaknesses, and their recommended uses in detail. Cartridges covered: 25 ACP, 25 NAA, 256 Win Mag, 25-20 Winchester, 25-20 Single Shot, 25-35 Winchester, 25 Remington, 250 Savage, 25-45 Sharps, 257 Roberts, 25-06 Remington, 25 WSSM, 257 Weatherby Magnum Please hit that “SUBSCRIBE” or “FOLLOW” button in your podcast app to receive future episodes automatically! I just made it back home from a fantastic couple of days at the Bergara Academy at Queen Mountain Ranch near Evanston, Wyoming. This episode is a short “campfire style” discussion of the highlights of our time up there I did with Collin Russell from Bergara and 4 other media guys from the industry who joined me up there. All told, we talk about what we did at the Bergara Academy, the guns we shot up there, what the course was like, and what our favorite part of the week was. Cole Tanner from Ozonics Hunting joins me on the show today to talk about the ozone devices they manufacture and sell to hunters as a way to minimize the chances of game smelling them afield. I know, it sounds too good to be true, but I've used an Ozonics unit for a long time myself now and I've seen firsthand how beneficial they can be afield. In fact, I'm certain it helped me take a couple of animals under conditions where there's no way I would have been successful without an ozonics unit. Well, Cole is going to tell us all about the how and why these ozonics units work, the situations they're best suited for, how to get the most out of them afield, and a little about their current product.
