Deep in the shadow of Mount Adams, on more than a million acres of Yakama Nation forest, something has been leaving 22-inch tracks — and the man whose job it is to walk that country has spent three decades trying to make sense of it.This week on Untold Radio AM, MonsterQuest producer Doug Hajicek and Jeff "The Big Ragu," joined by guest host Roger Williams, sit down with prominent Bigfoot researcher Mel Skahan. An enrolled Yakama tribal member and forestry expert, Mel has become the person people go to when they see something they can't explain out in the timber — and the reports have piled up into the hundreds.Mel takes us from the 1995 day he and a coworker cut timber and found footprints with a five-and-a-half-foot stride, to the 2006 sighting of something large, black, and glistening moving through the trees, to the rocks thrown out of the dark, the vocalizations, and the smell he still calls unforgettable. He also talks about the turn his research took after a tribal medicine man gave him some advice — trading thermal cameras and night vision for a far more respectful approach rooted in Yakama tradition. This one goes past footprints and into something older.⚠️ Some of these accounts are not for the faint of heart.WHAT YOU'LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODEThe 1995 timber-cruising encounter — 22-inch tracks, converging trails, and the feeling of being watched Mel's 2006 daylight sighting near Mount St. Helens country Rock throwing, tree knocks, howls, growls and whistles from the deep timber Why hundreds of reservation sighting reports rarely make it to the publicThe Native perspective: Sasquatch as a spiritual presence, not just an animalWhat a tribal medicine man told him — and why he put the trail cams awayDoug Hajicek on how these accounts line up with what he filmed during MonsterQuestABOUT OUR GUEST — MEL SKAHAN Mel Skahan is an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation and works in the tribe's Forest Management Section, helping oversee roughly 1.2 million acres of tribal land in Washington State. Joseph Granda has a multifaceted career in the entertainment and art worlds. Trained in NYC under the esteemed William Alderson in the Meisner technique, Joseph's journey spans stage, film, and visual arts.Joseph returns to Talking Weird to chat about his just released feature film - THE SASQUALOGIST - which looks at Bigfoot and the people who are obsessed with the mystery.Watch the film here:https://merkelfilms.com/programs/the-sasqualogistVisit the official page for the film here: https://thesasqualogist.com/Watch the trailer here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSgwbejeGsQJoseph has this to say about his approach to the Bigfoot subject:"During my research for the film, I delved into the world of Sasquatch enthusiasts, discovering a diverse community united by their love, reverence, and unwavering belief in this enigmatic creature. Within this community, there are two distinct factions: the "Apers," who view Sasquatch as a yet-to-be-discovered hominid, and the "Woos," who perceive it as an otherworldly being. With this film, I sought to navigate the complex terrain of Sasquatch lore with respect, infusing it with subtle humor and presenting compelling evidence for both camps.Regardless of your stance on Sasquatch, THE SASQUALOGIST promises to leave you with a profound understanding of the legend and a newfound appreciation for the significance of paternal guidance in our lives, whether we've experienced it firsthand or yearn for its presence. With the heartfelt dedication poured into every aspect of this film, I am confident that you will embrace it with the same fervor and affection that fueled its creation."THE SASQUALOGIST is already being hailed by critics as "the best Sasquatch movie ever."This is a fascinating conversation about the creation of Joseph's multi-award winning film, and the Aper vs Woo clash that inspired it.
