Jason and Mando interview Jonathan Barkan, the creator/director of the upcoming Mental Health and Horror documentary.
If horror films ever have religious themes, they're almost always Christian ones: good and evil, exorcisms, crosses and vampires, satanic cults. But as Halloween approaches, a Jewish horror-aficionado power couple is arguing that should change. Canadian horror writer Ariel Fisher and her husband, Jonathan Barkan, believe Jews have been reluctant to mine their real-life horrific experiences for artistic expression in the horror genre. In reality, Jews have suffered centuries of trauma that could well fuel its own subgenre. Fisher, who was born in Thornhill and now lives with her American-born husband in Ann Arbor, Michigan, join today to explore why Jewish horror stories have been so rare—and how they think it could change. How can a big-budget sequel to an international hit disappear from the public eye? This is the question the Certified Forgotten team must grapple with. On this week's episode, Matthew Monagle and Matt Donato are joined by Jonathan Barkan to talk about French cinema, religious horror, and those darn ninja monks from hell.
Playing The Beatles or Pink Floyd records backwards won't summon Lucifer, but playing the heavy metal Black Hymn forwards will unleash the hounds of hell. This week, the gang gives 2020 the finger and a righteous send-off with the most shameless and fun metal horror flick ever made. Also, what movies that you've seen this year would you rather have on a deserted island? Motion Picture Terror Scale: 1. Quality: 5. Enjoyment: 5. Ready for one last present? The gift that keeps on giving is Fear No Evil and here to help us send it to heaven or hell is the one and only Jonathan Barkan. Along the way, we all discuss the geometry of demonic crotch shots, why Patti Smith is so popular in blue collar dive bars, six-shooter fingering techniques and the diaphanous lingerie wear of fallen angels. Of course we nail ourselves to the cross of Choose Your Own Death-venture and meet our two new favorite characters: Community Theatre Jesus and NBC's Chicago Dad. Well, all that build up to our first year and it's flown by. That's that. We are now in year two. So it's on with EPISODE 51! This week, Andy and Mitch are joined by the Editor-In-Chief of Dread Central, it's Jonathan Barkan! His chosen film? Lord of Illusions! Writer/Director follows up Nightbreed with this, an adaptation of his own short story The Last Illusion in a bizarre (depending on the version you've watched) film that, while very Barker, is a weird best that demands closer scrutiny. How does it hold up? Private eye Harry D'Amour travels to Los Angeles and meets with a new client, Dorothea Swann. Swann reveals that she and her husband -- famed magician Philip Swann -- have been targeted by a religious cult experimenting with reincarnation. After Philip dies on stage in the midst of a dangerous trick, D'Amour must struggle to protect Dorothea from the ruthless cult members and their newly reanimated religious leader, Nix. Talkin' Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer's new film with Jonathan Barkan
Jonathan Barkan stops by to talk about his path to Dread Central, his favorite Michigan scares, and some of his incredible experiences working in the industry. Then we talk to a guy named Jeffrey Russell who probably won't be seeing any magic shows anytime soon in this Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions themed episode.
It's October and that means horror movies are in season, so the Big Nerd decided to bring the lead editor of DreadCentral.com Jonathan Barkan onto the show to discuss horror movies and especially the new Halloween movie.
In 1989, a group of adorably murderous puppets were set upon the unsuspecting masses by Charles Band and Full Moon entertainment. Despite being under two feet tall and being fuckin puppets, no one has quite figured out how to dispose of the mischievous marionettes, allowing them to have quite a few adventures over the last 30 years. After six years of hiding in the shadows, the puppets are back, and surprise, they’re nazis! Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (review starts at 33:35) is the newest installment in the saga of everyone’s favorite psychotic, stringed assassins. If a movie about nazi puppets isn’t crazy enough for you, you’re in luck! This week we’re joined by friend of the show Carlos “Warm Babies” Bielma! Later, things get really silly as Dread Central’s own editor in chief Jonathan Barkan joins in the discussion. Ah, face mutilated with a meat tenderizer, throat slit, and this one had her ass beat in. It’s the Who Goes There Podcast episode 177! This week, Jonathan Barkan joins SYFY WIRE editors, Dany Roth and Aaron Sagers for a very special Friday the 13th episode of Who Won the Week! Obviously there was a new The Last Jedi trailer we had to talk about, but then it was straight into all things horror. The New Mutants trailer was more horrific than any of us were expecting, and Happy Death Day was a surprise, too. What are our podcasters' horror origins? What were the scary stories we saw first, loved best, and what were the chilling childhood moments where we realized our horror habit made us not quite like the other boys and ghouls? Find out on the latest episode of Who Won the Week!
