www.marktreichel.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-treichel/Mark Treichel hosts a Washington roundtable with John McKechnie, Geeff Bacino, and Alonzo Swann — each with deep NCUA and credit union experience — to break down the forces reshaping the agency this summer. The conversation opens with the NCUA board itself: nominee John Crews and his likely path through a Senate Banking confirmation hearing, and a pending Supreme Court removal-power case that could reinstate two dismissed members or clear the way for new appointments. The group weighs what a full versus divided board would mean for examination priorities, enforcement, and the pace of rulemaking. From there, the discussion turns to a Mississippi conservatorship that became a fraud. Mark explains the single balance-sheet signal — an unusually high cash position paired with heavy borrowing and low loans-to-assets — that pointed to trouble before the word “fraud” was ever used, and the panel discusses what it reveals about supervisory committees, external audits, and internal controls. All wrongdoing is alleged, and a material loss review by the Inspector General follows. The panel then makes the case for examiner presence — the “empty cop car” effect — and why on-site observation catches what data alone cannot, especially as staffing tightens. The episode closes with a look at the Credit Union Board Modernization provision moving through Congress, which would give qualifying, healthy credit unions relief from monthly board-meeting requirements, and a candid take on why credit unions still trail banks on legislative relief.Topics: NCUA board composition and the confirmation timeline; the pending removal-power case; the Jackson, Mississippi conservatorship and alleged fraud; internal controls and supervisory committee oversight; examiner presence and staffing; the material loss review process; and the Credit Union Board Modernization provision.

Let's alchemize our lives for the better as Eliza Swann joins me to discuss The Alchemical Imagination: Creativity as Catalyst for Radical Transformation. We'll explore how the ancient art of alchemy weaves together the mystical, the scientific, and the philosophical to foster a more holistic, interdependent understanding of our world. You'll discover the “poetry of matter” by learning to dialogue with the spirits that animate the cosmos through an intensely relational practice. By bridging the gap between matter and spirit, Eliza offers a visionary perspective on addressing the modern ecological crisis by viewing the world as emanating from the sacred. Mike and Aaron Carruthers kick off Sci-Fi June with William Dear's time-travel oddity Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann, in which motocross racer Lyle Swann (Fred Ward) accidentally blasts a century into the past and spends the entire film completely unaware that he's done it. That central gag — a fish out of water who doesn't know he's a fish — drives most of the conversation, along with the film's quietly clever bootstrap paradox, its improbably stacked character cast, and the eclectic score produced by former Monkee Mike Nesmith.Mike and Aaron dig into what makes Fred Ward's performance work, why Belinda Bauer's Claire registers as the true power center of her frontier town, and how Peter Coyote earns his villain credentials in a single scene. They also talk through Dear's resourceful low-budget filmmaking — shooting on free desert locations, strapping cameras to bikes, hiring young stunt teams for five grand — and the director's personal connections to early Sam Raimi and the Michigan indie scene, including The Northville Cemetery Massacre.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

"When I sell the company, then I'll be happy." Psychotherapist Jo Swann says that one phrase is the most reliable predictor of a miserable exit. She would know. She made her money in the 90s, retired to an oceanfront apartment in Borneo, and fell straight into an existential crisis. In this episode of Built to Sell Radio, part of our popular After the Deal series, Swann explains why the trap survives the wire transfer
Is it individual performance, or is it how they contributed to the team? This truly subjective award has led to some interesting and controversial outcomes. Questions about alchemy and its place in modern day? Eliza is here with answers! The Alchemical Imagination is the first book of its kind to address the ancient subject of alchemy through the lens of contemporary creativity. From an expert teacher of modern alchemy across disciplines, Eliza Swann distills this arcane science into an accessible series of philosophies and techniques to help readers find a deeper connection to their own creativity. Part workbook and part historical journey through the lives and practices of the great alchemists, The Alchemical Imagination highlights often-overlooked female alchemists and queer alchemical imagery and traces their many contributions to contemporary art, handing this ancient craft to a new generation. The Alchemical Imagination brings the alchemical worldview to 21st-century artists in pursuit of expanding their creative life and practices. Swann brings a modern, queer, femme perspective to alchemical theory in a voice that is lively, fresh, and grounded in their fifteen years of teaching alchemy in universities and community organizations.Find the book and Eliza:Book: https://www.amazon.com/Alchemical-Imagination-Creativity-Catalyst-Transformation/dp/1578639018Website: www.elizaswann.com School: golden-dome.orgInstagram: @thecircularserpent and @goldendomeschoolEliza Swann is an interdisciplinary artist, intuitive, writer, and educator based in New York City. Send us a message.Matt picks up a Cartier-Bresson book at the used bookstore and we read two passages from it — one on prowling the streets, one on primitivism and the hobbyist trap. The quotes pull us into a longer conversation about what it means to make work outside commercial pressure, and whether the thrill of hunting for things to sell has become a structural parallel to street photography: the finding, the deciding, the sharing. We don't fully settle it, but the overlap is hard to ignore. From there we move through John Ruskin's definition of great art — the greatest number of greatest ideas, received by the highest faculties — and Alex reads a passage from Swann's Way, the moment where music briefly restores Swan's belief that there's something worth devoting a life toward. We've talked around definitions of art on this show before, and this episode probably gets us closest to something we can actually use.The last third of the episode centers on an Italo Calvino essay called "The Written City: Inscriptions and Graffiti," written in 1980, which frames words on walls — whether graffiti, political signs, or advertising — as a form of aggression imposed on anyone who happens to walk by. We spend some time with the idea and push on it: what it exempts, where we agree, where it gets complicated, and what it says about the visual state of things fifty years later. -AiSupport the show If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. This week's Empire Podcast is the kind of episode that could leave other film podcasts in its wake. Mainly because there's a lot of discussion of ships, boats, the high seas and the like. First off, our guests this week are Callum Turner and George Mackay, the British actors who star in Mark Jenkin's latest movie, the fisherman-themed Rose Of Nevada, which is out now, and in a cracking chat with Alex Godfrey, they talk about how they first met, working with the unique Jenkin, and more. Either side of that, Chris Hewitt returns to the host chair after two weeks away, some of which was spent on a cruise ship, and he scrapes the barnacles off long enough to welcome Helen O'Hara (or is it?) and James Dyer into the podbooth to discuss the best ship-related scenes, have a look at the week's movie news, try to convince James of the merits of the Jackass movies, and review the likes of The Devil Wears Prada 2, Rose Of Nevada (with help from an unexpected quarter), Greenland 2: Migration, and new Adam Scott horror, Hokum. You best start believing in Empire Podcasts, Ms Swann... YER IN ONE! Enjoy.

Eliza Swann discusses alchemy and art, focusing on what alchemy actually is and how it can be understood and practiced in a grounded and accessible way. She explains alchemy as a blend of hands-on work and inner awareness, describing how processes like making plant tinctures and pigments reflect deeper personal transformation, where the state of the practitioner directly influences the outcome. The conversation walks through key ideas such as the stages of alchemy, the meaning of the philosopher's stone, and how symbolic language and imagery can be used to shift perception and unlock creativity. Swann also shares the structure behind her book, The Alchemical Imagination, showing how these stages can be applied through simple practices, emotional awareness, and creative exercises rather than requiring advanced knowledge or a laboratory. Along the way, Lux and Eliza touch on historical figures like John Dee and the importance of working with materials and ideas in a respectful and engaged way, presenting alchemy as a practical path for developing awareness, creativity, and a deeper connection to the world.Eliza's new book, The Alchemical Imagination, will be released on May 4th, 2026. INTERVIEW: Dianne Swann on Taite Prize 2026 finalists by Zac Hoffman on Radio One 91FM Dunedin
The Steelers and Raiders were two of the defining teams of the decade, opposites in almost every way. Pittsburgh was a homegrown powerhouse built through the draft, while Oakland thrived by embracing outcasts and unconventional talent. The Steelers were new to winning; the Raiders had already captured an AFL championship. Both embodied the brutal style of the era - gritty defenses, punishing hits, and a brand of football so violent it forced rule changes. The rivalry, and the intensity that fueled it, may never be matched again in the history of the NFL.Get our Steelers-Ravens book here! www.marktreichel.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-treichel/In this episode of With Flying Colors, Mark Treichel is joined by former NCUA leaders Geoff Bacino, Alonzo Swann, and John McKechnie for a timely and candid discussion about Chairman Kyle Hauptman's appointment to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) — and what it signals for the future of the NCUA.While the announcement appears straightforward, the panel explains why it creates a ripple effect across the agency, including questions about leadership continuity, pending lawsuits, board vacancies, staff reductions, and the broader stability of the regulator at a critical time for credit unions. This conversation goes beyond speculation and into how the agency actually functions when leadership is in flux — from delegation of authority to examiner operations to internal morale. You'll hear insider perspective on:Why Hauptman's “intent to remain” language mattersHow the Slaughter/Harper lawsuits could determine the shape of the future boardWhat a one-member board means in practiceWhy notation votes and lack of public discussion are becoming a concernThe real impact of a 27% staff reduction at NCUAHow agency expertise gaps are affecting morale and operationsThe upcoming interest rate ceiling decision and why it may be politically sensitiveWhy the agency may be “running itself” more than people realizeWhat happens if the Supreme Court changes how independent boards operatePredictions on who may replace Hauptman and what that means for credit unionsThe panel also discusses how political dynamics, Senate control, and White House strategy could shape the next NCUA board in ways credit unions haven't seen before.Despite the uncertainty, one theme is clear: the blocking and tackling of supervision continues, but major structural decisions are happening quietly beneath the surface. This episode is essential listening for anyone trying to understand where NCUA is headed in 2026.

Stepping inside an Impressionist painting? Yes, please.Week 41 of Ted Gioia's Immersive Humanities Course made me realize something startling: these books weren't picked for my enjoyment--and yet I loved them anyway. This week's readings, Henry James's The Spoils of Poynton and the “Overture” to Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, carry us right into the early twentieth century.I approached James with dread, expecting a slow narrative, but instead I found a moody, infinitely readable novel built around obsession, property, and desire. With a small cast and dialogue-driven scenes, it feels almost theatrical, no surprise since James briefly wrote plays. But it's also chilling in its fixation on “stuff” and ownership. This one was a winner.Proust, meanwhile, surprised me with prose that felt dreamlike, luminous, and unexpectedly funny. I had expected dense, boring, and pointless--Proust was none of those. The famous madeleine scene becomes a meditation on memory that expands from a sensation as small as a crumb into an entire world.Though radically different on the surface, James and Proust share a similar impressionistic quality, finding vast meaning in subtle gestures. A brilliant pairing--and a week I adored, even if Ted doesn't care. The Housekeeping:LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)CONNECTThe complete list of Crack the Book Episodes: https://cheryldrury.substack.com/p/crack-the-book-start-here?r=u3t2rTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm
