It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a four parter anyways. 1990 was a damn fine year for horror movies. Unfortunately though, once again, there is no iron clad masterpiece amongst them. Just a stack of really decent films. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1990? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and a 6+ hour running. This is 1990, A Year In Horror. It's a pretty long journey this one, part 3 of 4 in fact. I am going to give you the time codes below so if you don't want spoilers then, please, avert your eyes.0.30 - Nightbreed (w/ Miranda Corcoran)40.12 - It (w/ Isa Holliday)1.10.17 - Also Rans (Part 3)1.15.46 - Hardware (w/ Niki Jones) You can now support A Year in Horror via the Patreon.Theme Music by Max Newton& Lucy Foster.Email the podcast at ayearinhorror@gmail.comDon't bother following the podcast on Facebook. N is the next letter up and N is for Nightbreed! This movie means a lot to one of us and the other.....well...you'll just have to listen! We were joined by Ray (Scare Pair) for this one and we talk all things horror, make up and why is Midian a well known place to everyone but Boone!
Damn the man! Save the Nightbreed! This week on Shoot the Hostage Dan and Sarah dive headfirst into the gloriously bonkers world of Clive Barker's 1990 cinematic oddity, Nightbreed! Based on Barker's own 1988 novella, Cabal, Nightbreed throws us into a world where the real monsters might not be the ones with the gnarly prosthetics. Speaking of gnarly, this film certainly delivers on the creature front, showcasing Barker's unique and utterly twisted imagination. We'll be asking the big questions, like: why does the guy with the face on his stomach get so little screen time? Which creatures are Nightbreed and which aren't? And what we could do with an army of miniature Clive Barker clones! In this episode you can also expect: Spoiler-filled discussion of Nightbreed (1990) Enthusiastic (and possibly biased) opinions on the film's merits The usual digressions and tangents that may or may not be relevant Unpacking of Nightbreed's status as a box-office flop and its subsequent cult following Analysis of the film's themes of otherness and societal prejudice A surprising connection to Red Dwarf So, if you're after a deep dive into a horror movie that dared to be different, a film about monsters you might actually root for, and a chat that's as messy and enthusiastic as a rave in Midian, then you've come to the right place! Hardware (1990), Death Machine (1994), and Event Horizon (1997) The 1990s are often thought of as a decade of dread for horror fans—not because of what was on the screen, but because nothing good supposedly came out of it. Or at least, that's the typical response. But as we continue down the path to Discover the Horror, we're starting to realize that what we remember about the past isn't always accurate—whether it's based on our own memories or what we were told. When you really dig into those ten years, there's actually a lot of great stuff that came out—even just here in the U.S. And when you look beyond to international horror, it gets even better. Browse through the list and you're bound to say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.” In this episode, we decided to tackle that decade and picked three titles that, as it turns out, share some very similar themes. And we think all three are well worth watching. Films mentioned in this episode: Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Batman Returns (1992), The Blair Witch Project (1999), The Boneyard (1991), Braindead (1992), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Candyman (1992), Cronos (1992), Day of the Dead (1985), Death Machine (1994), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Descent (2005), Dr. Giggles (1992), Dust Devil (1992), Event Horizon (1997), Evil Dead 2 (1987), The Exorcist (1973), Faces of Death (1978), Freeway (1996), Goodfellas (1990), Godzilla (1998), Gravity (2013), Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 (1998), Hardware (1990), Hellraiser (1987), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), High Tension (2003), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), Judge Dredd (1995), Jurassic Park (1993), Lord of Illusion (1995), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Meet the Feebles (1989), Mimic (1997), Misery (1990), The Mummy (1999), Nightbreed (1990), Pulp Fiction (1994), The Princess Bride (1987), Reign of Fire (2002), The Resurrected (1991), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Return to Splatter Farm (2020), Ringu (1998), Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Star Wars (1977), Thelma & Louise (1991), The Thing (1982), Valentine (2001), Warning Sign (1985), Willow (1988)

This week on Retro Life 4 You, we dive into Clive Barker's cult classic Nightbreed (1990)! This dark fantasy horror film flips the script on monster movies, portraying the creatures of Midian as misunderstood outcasts while humanity proves to be the real evil. We'll break down the film's troubled production, the studio interference that butchered Barker's original vision, and how Nightbreed found new life with the Director's Cut.Join us as we discuss:

We'll discuss the film's unique take on monsters and humanity, exploring the themes of acceptance, identity, and the struggle against societal norms. From the hauntingly beautiful design of Midian to the unforgettable characters that inhabit this dark universe, we'll analyze what makes Nightbreed a standout in the horror genre. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the world of Nightbreed, this episode promises to be a thrilling exploration of a film that challenges our perceptions of monsters and what it means to belong. Tune in for a captivating discussion that will leave you eager to revisit this haunting tale of the misunderstood!
Come to... Pod-dy? We're straining for puns over here, but we've got a fun remote-recorded episode today, featuring the return of author and podcaster Garon Cockrell (Demonic and Other Tales). It's a follow-up to last year's Nightbreed episode, in which Tyler voiced his dislike for body horror. For being such a good sport, we reward him with more Clive Barker: the 1987 film Hellraiser, directed by Barker and adapted from his own novella, The Hellbound Heart. There are discussions of the story's psychosexual dynamics and hazy mythology, plus a bit about the sequels and remakes. Hosted by Allan Traylor, Tyler Austin, and Justin Remer. Produced by Justin Remer. (sorry about the mixed-bag sound) Recorded remotely via Zencastr. Opening music: "Optimism (Instrumental) by Duck the Piano Wire. Closing music: "Rule of 3s (Solemnity Child)" by Elastic No-No Band.
We're breaking from the usual LP format of our commentary episodes to bring you a discussion of a label compilation, specifically the first volume of Nightbreed's infamous "Gothic Sounds" samplers. We're using tunes from the likes of Suspiria, Nekromantik, and Faithful Dawn as an opportunity to discuss the ins and outs of mid 90s UK goth, and specifically the tantalizing electrogoth sound which has always been closely tied to Nightbreed.

This year the crew has chosen the 1990's decade to travel through. !990 is where we have traveled to this episode and as we always do, we are ranking our top five horror movies from that year. We invited special guest Greg Buzzelli from Monsters and The Mosh Pit as well as other projects to join us. In this week's episode, we're covering a movie that we've frankly been putting off for like two months now with the 1990 supernatural (?) thriller (??) "Demon Wind." Special topics for your consideration include: running at full speed out of the gate and being unable to maintain that pace for any amount of time, lying about the dates of milestone events, He-Man lights, wizards, pudding, and what if anything a demon wind actually is. As far as horror goes, 1990 was an absolute mess as evidenced by the high highs and low lows of Episode 28- "Child's Play 2," Episode 97- "IT," Episode 132- "Tales from the Darkside," Episode 167- "Puppet Master 2," Episode 184- "Tremors," Episode 194- "Santa Sangre," Episode 320- "Nightbreed," and Episode 335- "Frankenhooker." DownloadWE HAVE DID IT!! LOTC has reached the huge milestone, episode 400. This is GregaMortis and I am typing from the heart right now. Episode 400 would have not been possible without episode 1, actually The Creepture Feature Horror Show podcast which was the original show. Way back in late 2009 myself and Dr Butcher aka Dr Dirty Aka Joe and I got together at a local movie rental store in a rural town in North Carolina where Joe worked at the time and I frequently went in to rent movies. We both had a desire to do something in horror, after throwing ideas off each other the word Podcast got mentioned. Now 2009 Podcasts were not unknown but certainly were not like they are now. That was the seed, Joe and I had decided that was it, podcasting. in 2010 Joe and I published our 1st episode and now 14 years later and through many format changes and different hosts We have made it to 400. This is so huge for myself and the crew as well as humbling. To think that a somewhat introvert from a very small town in North Carolina would be able to see 400 episodes with such an amazing lineup of hosts and the greatest Listeners/family in the whole world. Now to reach 400 episodes one thing has to happen, great hosts, people who week in and out discuss movies and topics in a way that makes each of You tune in as well as each host want to continue. We have had several hosts in the past and I want to say Thank You to each and everyone of them. Joe aka Dr Dirty, Shaun Davis aka Haddonfield Hatchet also my Jack Ass lol, Dave Becker aka Doctor Shock, Kenny Pumpkin King Caperton, Jeff "Bruno" Bromley who we lost due to Cancer, Jessie Robbins, Wolfman Josh, Channy Dreadful, Bill Van Veghel, Justin Beahm as well as my queen and the queen of horror The Twisted Temptress Pearl. I also want to say a huge Thank You to all the many guests we have had in the past. Everyone has been so prepared and I truly have enjoyed recording with each one. I have to most of all say Thank You to each and every one of You who have tuned in to listen to us talk horror. Some have listened to each and every episode, followed us from the beginning, some have come later but went back to listen to each episode, some have came recently and have lots to catch up on, where ever you fit in to these categories Thank You is not enough. A huge virtual hug and high five is not enough. A celebratory shot of Jim Beam and Honey is not enough. YOU guys and gals are what keep us going. We are extremely excited to see where we go next, one thing is for sure, we are not stopping, we are going to keep bringing you hopefully entertaining episodes. During this show each host picked a movie to watch and review that they felt might shock You that they have not seen. This was much harder than we thought originally but each host brought their best. We also played all the voicemails where we asked for You to send us questions, we had some really good ones and we answered to our best abilities. We also could not have recorded such a monumental show with out our great friend Justin Beahm. GregaMortis and Justin spend time discussing a film he had not seen as well as having him answer the same questions as well. This episode was so fun to record and we are hoping you will be entertained. Vi nämner bland annat också: Lida, Jacobs Inferno, IT, Tremors, The Exorcist III, Gremlins 2, Night of the Living Dead, Onda Dockan 2, Flatliners, Graveyard Shift, Nightbreed, Predator 2, Two Evil Eyes, Repossessed, Psycho IV, Slumber Party Massacre III, Troll 2, The Gate 2.
Sometimes Hollywood screws up real good. When that happens, in times of direst need, podcasters will come together to teach the major studios the error of their ways by paying homage to the edited versions of these films they got us to buy a second time. We kick things of with 1990's Nightbreed: The Director's Cut, and wash that down with 1982's Blade Runner: The Final Cut. We sure showed them!Email: info@channel-37.comTwitter: @WHXN37

How is it that two weeks in a row we ended up with movies that were far longer than they had any right to be? Well regardless we now have Nightbreed a movie that just cannot seem to decide what it wants to be. It has some of the fastest and slowest pacing in a movie the three of us have ever seen. However, Clive Barker is involved so it has to be at least decent, right? Maybe. Essential?
