This time I am re-presenting an episode of a show I did for like five seconds called Fortress of Baileytude Showcase Presents. Or something like that. It was this weird thing I was trying to do that just didn't catch on. To be honest, this episode should have been on the It All Comes Back to Superman in the first time. Anyway, back in 2018 my good friend the Irredeemable Shag and I spent nearly three hours talking about the Death and Return of Superman phenomena and it was a fun episode to record. We go through the entire event from inception to the return of the one, true Superman. Shag gives a lot of insight about what it was like to be a retailer during those days, and I played a bunch of clips from various news reports that...reported on the event. During the episode I mentioned an Oral History that was on SyFy Wire in 2018. That article doesn't exist anymore, which is a shame. Below are a list of the various shows that Shag hosts or co-hosts over at The Fire and Water Podcast Network. Once Upon a Geek Justice Society Presents Who's Who Review Aquaman and Firestorm: The Fire and Water Podcast Justice League International: Bwah-Ha-Ha Podcast Next time: No clue. Haven't decided yet, but something should be coming next month.
When you've put your heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears into building a world -- what happens when you then have to leave it behind? Most SFF authors will, at some point, close up their work in one world and start building a new one, but that comes with its own set of challenges! You know the old world so well; it's become comfy and familiar. The new world still has all its work yet to be done, and while it has the shiny lure of new discoveries, it also may seem daunting to start the process of figuring out how a world works all over again. In this episode, Fonda Lee and Melissa Caruso re-join us to discuss shifting focus from one world to another! Where do you start? How different do you need the world to be? We also chat about not just the mental challenges of clearing out one world to make room for the new one, but the emotional challenge of pulling yourself away from a place you love and know so well! Our Guests: Melissa Caruso writes books of murder, magic, and mayhem. Her published fantasy novels include the Swords & Fire trilogy (THE TETHERED MAGE, THE DEFIANT HEIR, THE UNBOUND EMPIRE) and the Rooks & Ruin trilogy (THE OBSIDIAN TOWER, THE QUICKSILVER COURT, THE IVORY TOMB), all from Orbit Books. Her debut novel was shortlisted for the Gemmell Morningstar Award in 2017, and her books have received starred reviews and made countless Best Of lists. Melissa is a tea drinker, larper, and mom, and lives in Massachusetts with her video game designer husband, two superlative daughters, and assorted pets. Fonda Lee is the author of the epic fantasy Green Bone Saga, consisting of the novels Jade City, Jade War, and Jade Legacy, along with a prequel novella The Jade Setter of Janloon and a short story collection, Jade Shards. She is also the author of the science fiction novels Zeroboxer, Exo and Cross Fire. Her most recent work is the fantasy novella, Untethered Sky. Fonda is a winner of the World Fantasy Award, the Locus Award, and a five-time winner of the Aurora Award (Canada's national science fiction and fantasy award), as well as a multiple finalist for the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Oregon Book Award. Her novels have garnered multiple starred reviews and appeared on Best of Year lists from NPR, Barnes & Noble, Syfy Wire, and others. Jade City has been translated in a dozen languages, named to TIME Magazine's Top 100 Fantasy Books of All Time, and optioned for television development. She has also written acclaimed short fiction and been an instructor at writing workshops including Clarion West, Viable Paradise, and Aspen Words. Paul is joined in conversation by Josh Weiss, journalist for SYFY WIRE and published author, whose latest novel — “Sunset Empire” (set for release in March from Grand Central Publishing) — follows the continuing saga of LAPD detective Morris Baker, a Jewish Holocaust survivor who drowns his fractured memories of the unspeakable in schnapps and work. It is the follow-up to his debut novel, “Beat The Devils," an inventive, page-turning alternate history crime thriller set in a reality where the Red Scare never ended; praised by The New York Times Book Review for its "palpable emotional depth." Robert and Nomi join S. A. Bradley, (author of Screaming for Pleasure: How Horror Makes You Happy and Healthy and host of the Hellbent for Horror podcast) on a fun and energetic riff on one of our oldest and most beautiful storytelling forms: the horror genre. Bradley talks to us about how the genre is tailor-made for allegory and metaphor, and how it allows us to have a safe “handshake” with our shadow-selves. We also chat about our "first-kisses" with horror, how horror can sometimes be a safe space for LGBTQIA+ community and other "cultural outcasts", and why the genre deserves respect.S.A. Bradley is the host of Hellbent For Horror, a popular 4- time Rondo Award-nominated podcast exploring all things horror across books, film, comics, and music that has been described by director Guillermo Del Toro as "well researched, articulate and entirely absorbing." Bradley, who has loved being scared by over 1,600 horror films, turned his passion into purpose by sharing his expansive knowledge on countless podcasts and in anthologies like Medium Chill and EvilSpeak magazine. He has lectured at Webster University and The College of Idaho, and alsoperformed his live show “My Horror Manifesto” in NYC and horror conventions like TusCon, FearCon, MileHi Con and more across the USA. Bradley's first book, Screaming for Pleasure: How Horror Makes You Happy and Healthy, is a thrilling ride through the horror genre, its intense effect on every generation, and how you can be enriched by horror. The book was nominated for a Rondo Award for Best Book of 2018. Bradley has been featured in Dread Central, iHorror.com, Horrorhound, SyFy Wire and more for his work in the horror genre. Prior to becoming a champion of horror, Bradley served in the U.S. Air Force and was a firefighter. He now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and their dog, Fiona, where they can often be found meditating in a death metal mosh pit or dancing around a Northern Californian fire pit drum circle.Get your spook on by following Bradley onTwitter @hellbenthorrorInstagram @hellbentforhorrorFacebook @hellbentgorhorror or on his website at Hellbentforhorror.com Download this and future episodes of our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocketcasts, and anywhere else find your favorite shows. In 17th Century Paris, Catherine Monvoisin was a famous fortune-teller, poisoner, and practitioner of black magic. She helped Paris high society with their problems. Her poisons and black magic may have had a hand in murdering between 1,000 and 2,500 people. And then she got involved with a woman looking for help killing her lover -- King Louis IVX. That's where things got messy for La Voisin. Lindsay closes out our Halloween-themed triptych by diving into the legend of La Llorona. For starters, she describes the various iterations of La Llorona's “origin story,” before sharing a number of reported first-hand run-ins with the sad spectre. For dessert, she serves up helpings of pop culture mentions of the moaning mother if you can't get enough of our main course.
