On this episode of PENNING TERROR, host David Ian McKendry chats with writing and directing duo Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch (PET SEMATARY (2019), STARRY EYES) for a fascinating interview.
Although the clown monster hit “It” of the same year may have ended up grossing more box office dollars, "Pet Sematary" is a much better horror movie written by Stephen King, in my opinion. The creepiness permeates and paves the way for a quaint yet terrifying tale of one family and a mystic pet cemetery just behind their house. I have observed modern horror includes both remakes of past hits as well as re imaginings. These span from “Friday the 13th” to “The Fly” and beyond. Here we have a remake with a slight re imagining element. Pet Sematary revitalizes the beloved 80’s film by Stephen King and respectively repackages it into a film that is more artful, more creepy, and more thought provoking than the original. This isn’t just a jump-scare film either, though it has some of that. It is a horror film through and through creepiness and dark, misty atmosphere included. Quaint may not be the best adjective for this tale in that it has elements of horror and gore interspersed with a simple story about a quaint family in an all-American home. I think it’s important to note however that getting a story across should have simple pillars. I think the clown film “It” gets way into the complicated zone and for me this detracts from the power of the story. This film indeed has a quaint, or simple, story that is tastefully told using horror elements that accentuate instead of blot it out. Another benefit of this simplicity is that entry level horror fans can have better access to it. Walking into a haunted house, the riff raff gets sorted out pretty quickly. By that I mean: they do not continue. If it’s a more mild form of scare, they may come through and enjoy the whole attraction. That happened with my youngest daughter, age 11. She’s not into horror yet but she really wanted to see this movie. She ended up loving it. She’s still not claiming to be a horror fan but I would say this film has that “entry level horror” quality to it. The trailer is not “entry level” sounding, let’s listen to it now ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK0LNzU2TQI At the get go I want to address the direction “team.” Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer. This film plays like a film that people cared for over a long time. There are no accidents. It all works perfectly too. These directors are behind “Starry Eyes.” This goes to show you they had a value for graphic horror in this film. “Starry Eyes” is one of those films where you relate because it looks like it could be happening in your own home or apartment. In fact, as the body count rises, you start thinking about how you will need to hide the evidence. These two can make the film personal and bring the creepiness home to the horror fan. Since “Pet Sematary” takes place with a family in a home and builds its horror moments between family members, Kolsch was a perfect choice. You feel that creepy atmosphere and personal discomfort. I think I’ve discovered a new favorite director team. You can bet I’ll be watching everything they do. I also applaud the producers here for supporting these two on this project. I can only dream of what they COULD have done with “It.” As it is, I am not a huge fan. A shout out must go to Matt Greenburg for crafting the screenplay. He did Reign of Fire which I really enjoyed. He has some other films under his belt he’s done that are quite impressive: “Seventh Son” and “Halloween H20.” Clearly this project required a talented writer. I loved some of the carefully made changes. They are actually more nods to the original film rather than just detail changes. Here at the beginning, let’s take a look at this cast and see how it stacks up to horror. Jason Clark plays the father/husband in this. He does a pretty good job overall. How do I say this respectfully and delicately? Clark lacks the range in my opinion to play what this role requires. When he is tender with his wife and family his face looks exactly the same as when he is obsessing.

A new entry in the Old Hollywood/Path-to-Fame/Demon Cult subgenre?! This week Ryan and Tim explore their relationship with living (and dying) in Tinseltown and the pitfalls of pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. Starry Eyes hit particularly close to home for Tim and his past life as an actor, while Ryan was compelled to explore a more esoteric, philosophical, hypothesis, and wonders if the traditionally competitive industry could someday change its measure of success to include more people. With a standard “stream” from Ryan and an unusual “buy” from Tim, the guys really balance the good with the bad on this one. Sometimes READ is better. Tony and Matt used the remake of Pet Sematary as an excuse to return to the source: Stephen King's haunting 1983 novel. The guys go deep into what was scariest about the book and how both movies -- 1989's adaptation by Mary Lambert and 2019's remake/readaptation by Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch -- tried with varying degrees of success to turn a father's slow decent into grief-stricken madness into creature features. Which version of Church the cat did we like best? Who was the better sitcom goof-turned-exposition-dropping-Mainer, Dick from 3rd Rock or Herman Munster? Ayuh, they answer these questions and more in this week's What Did We Miss?

In this episode, Electro and Banno take us down a terrifying journey as they go through the film adaptations of the most famous author of the last half-century, the legend known as Stephen King. With the release of the second adaptation of "Pet Semetary" directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, we were tempted to talk about other adaptations of Kings books. From Carrie to Cujo to Maximum Overdrive the guys go through as much the list as you can on one podcast episode.
Nolan is joined by Emily von Seele, Kat Adams, and Thomas Foster to discuss Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer’s STARRY EYES (2014) and Nicolas Winding Refn's THE NEON DEMON (2016). The crew catches up on new discoveries and rewatches, as well as recent horror releases — including a review of Kölsch and Widmyer’s re-adaptation of Stephen King's PET SEMATARY (2019) — before heading to Hollywood and losing themselves to their own monstrous ambitions. Other movies discussed on this episode: CASTLE FREAK (1995), US (2019), PET SEMATARY (1989), BLADE (1998), BLADE II (2002), BLADE: TRINITY (2004), LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008), BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS (2015), BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA (1992), KNOCK KNOCK (2015), PET SEMATARY (2019). As will always be the case with this show, be aware that our discussion contains spoilers. If you want to watch the movies before listening to the show, there are a couple of ways you can do so. STARRY EYES and THE NEON DEMON are available to stream on Amazon Prime, and both are also available to rent via video-on-demand. MOVIE REVIEW: Despite being rather tame in comparison to other Stephen King novels, Pet Sematary is known for its merciless psychological horror. Bordering on brutal, how does the seemingly hopeless world of Pet Sematary translate to the big screen? In this second film adaption of the popular literary work, do we end up with something remarkable or detestable? Pet Sematary (2019) is Rated R for horror violence, bloody images, and some language. It features Jason Clarke and Amy Seimetz. Directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer. Tune in Wednesday nights for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. When PET SEMATARY (1983) was released, Stephen King was already a best seller. Unlike some of his other books, this novel was a much smaller work in a sense. Focusing on a handful of characters and not full a crescendo of craziness until the very last act, the book was a more personal work for most readers. Its discussion of death and loss itself could fill up an entire book. By 1989, the first adaptation of the novel appeared on the big screen. Now twenty years later, the remake has arrived. Lewis Creed and his family move to the small town of Ludlow, Maine after he accepts a position as a doctor at the University of Maine. Unfortunately a major road runs straight through his front yard where tractor trailers ride incessantly. When a tragic accident occurs, neighbor Jud Crandall decides to help out leading to unfortunate consequences which will haunt all involved. The film is directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer in their follow up to the highly acclaimed cult film STARRY EYES (2014). In front of the camera includes Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lighgow. Originally receiving fabulous reviews on the festival circuit, the movie (upon release) suddenly dropped in prestige and has received mixed opinions. Dark Discussions takes a look at this highly anticipated adaption. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, Pet Sematary is a supernatural horror film where just maybe “dead is better”. Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) and his wife, Rachel (Amy Seimetz), relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his neighbour Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unspeakable evil with horrific consequences.

Pet Sematary is the second film adaptation of the Stephen King novel first published in 1983. The premise involves a family of four who relocate from the hustle and bustle of Boston to a small town in Maine called Ludlow on a wide parcel of land that includes many acres of wooded forest. It's in that forest that their daughter Ellie (Jete Laurence) discovers a cemetery for beloved pets of people in the surrounding area, going back decades, including one belonging to their elderly neighbor Jud (John Lithgow). Turns out they may need the use of the cemetery, as their kind kitty named Church gets run over, causing the father, Louis (Jason Clarke), to have to bury the cat, though he can't quite bring himself to tell Ellie and break her heart. Jud doesn't want to see that happen and suggests burying Church in a special place far deeper into the woods. Lo and behold, Church is back with the family the next day, but it's clear he's not quite himself anymore.

This is easily one of my most anticipated guests to have on the show so far. Granted we focus mainly on the fact that she's starring in the new reimagining of Stephen King's Pet Sematary, directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, which just opened today in theaters everywhere. But for those who know me personally, a film that she starred in a few years ago, is actually my 2nd favorite of all time. Shane Carruth's Upstream Color has had a monumental impact on me in a myriad of ways so of course, towards the end, I had to inquire further. Most folks might know her as Jane Ives from Stranger Things but check out her extensive IMDB page - she's worked some of the best directors out there. We also talk about Stephen King, growing up on horror, losing a parent, what Amy is working on next and so much more. Again, can't say enough kind words about today's guest and truly hope you enjoy our talk as much as I did. 00:00 - 06:44 - Intro 06:45 - 30:24 - Interview w/Amy 30:25 - 31:00 - Outro Check out Pet Sematary: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0837563/ More about Amy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Seimetz

The last episode for October features Corey's (@coreyrstarr) pick Starry Eyes (2014). The film is directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer and stars Alex Essoe, Amanda Fuller, and Noah Segan. Jonathan (@berkreviews) hadn't seen this one either and both found some positive elements about it. However, the body horror was a bit much for both making it hard to really watch at times. Still, they didn't regret this pick so listen to the episode to hear their detailed reviews. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

We Monday'd the shit out of this episode. No prep work, no game plan. Just sit at the table and go. And we'll be damned if it didn't work. The true Modern Horrors way. The news kicks off with trailers, trailers, and more trailers. THE NUN gives us a glimpse into what we can expect. No surprise that it is gorgeous, but what is surprising is that attitudes have shifted towards the movie. Sticking with religious horror, we jaunt over to Ireland to check out the historical found-footage flick THE DEVIL'S DOORWAY. Sold out in just 20 seconds, SUSU has Beijing audiences very excited, while THE ROW is a slasher that has us less excited, but there's always a soft spot for Randy Couture. Finally, we check out UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB. But wait! There's more! Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch have started filming on their remake of PET SEMETARY (give the boys a chance we say). Highly anticipated SUMMER OF 84 and REVENGE both get release dates. And in news that we don't know what we're talking about, Ewan McGregor gets cast in Mike Flanagan's adaptation of DR SLEEP. This week we review INCIDENT IN A GHOSTLAND (or as you may find it, GHOSTLAND). A large portion of the fanbase has been clamoring for Pascal Laugier to return to his violent ways that we saw in the original MARTYRS. We explore whether or not this is another brutishly deep movie, or if we're in for another TALL MAN. Last but certainly not least, we play a game from deep in the archives. 3 names that were involved in a film. 1 guess. As always, thanks for the listens, shares, and reviews. You guys keep the show rolling! Also check out hypericon.net for information on how to see your favorite horror podcast live on July 7th!
This week's episode can only be described as . . . WHAT THE F***?!?!? Because we're checking out a collection of demented horror tales that put some unique spins on some of our favorite AND not-so-favorite . . . Holidays! With a roster of directors that include Kevin Smith, Gary Shore, Adam Egypt Mortimer, Scott Stewart, Nicholas McCarthy, Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, Sarah Adina Smith and Anthony Scott Burns, Holidays is definitely a film that sticks with you, whether you like it or not!
How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice for stardom? We find out on this week's episode as we talk about the indie horror flick, Starry Eyes, directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, and starring Alex Essoe, Amanda Fuller, Noah Segan, and Fabianne Therese.
