This one is something special. That statement doesn't just apply to the movie WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON (1993) from director Anthony Hickox, which is the subject of this new episode. As much as the movie itself made for an entertaining discussion, what makes it special is that we're joined on this episode by returning guest Duane Swierczynski! We had a wonderful time chatting with Duane in our LORD OF ILLUSIONS episode a couple years back, and we're so thrilled to have him back on the pod to talk about the next installment in the WARLOCK series, as well as the Holiday Book Drive currently underway for 2024 via The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation (benefitting The Children's Hospital of Los Angeles). You can learn more about The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation and donate to them directly at: https://www.teameviefoundation.com/ We also absolutely encourage everyone to check out Duane's work (including CALIFORNIA BEAR and the recently reprinted SECRET DEAD MEN), and you can visit his official site for more details: https://www.gleefulmayhem.com/ The Commando-inspired "Infinity Tree" design from the fabulous Erica Henderson mentioned in today's episode can be found on her Threadless page: https://ericafails.threadless.com/ If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

A private detectives investigates the circumstances surrounding the death of a cult leader and a missing magician, Philip Swan. We're excited to discuss another Clive Barker movie. Lord of Illusions is an interest movie that discusses the utilization of different types of magic and illusions and how to harvest that power. It's always fun to watch an original story that has several characters come together for a deeper purpose. While not on the level of Hellraiser, this movie is engaging and has wildly interesting characters. Watch the movie and catch our review. It's time for one of those huge episodes.
KRRAAAH!

Bryan and Joe return to Clive Barker territory to discuss a magical (or illusory?) double bill. First up is 'The Last Illusion', the 1985 short from Books of Blood Vol. 6 that introduces private investigator Harry D'Amour. Bryan likes the creatures, particularly Valentin, though Joe finds the plot meandering.Next up is Barker's 1995 film adaptation Lord of Illusions, which is both ambitious and feels like Barker succumbing to Hollywood demands. Joe is nostalgic for its messy queerness and prefers the Director's Cut, while Bryan finds it busy and notes that characters lack agency.Wanna connect with the show?Bryan: @eviltaylorhicksJoe: @bstolemyremoteMusic Credit: Hellraiser Theme by Christopher YoungIf you like the podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe!Check out Anatomy of a Scream for more great content and the other Network pods Hosted on Acast. In this week's episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Michael Bay's relatively timid dystopian science fiction thriller, The Island! Bay trying his best to restrain himself during dialogue scenes, but going full-destructive-madman during the intense action scenes! A stacked cast that includes a playful Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson at the edge of mega stardom, Sean Bean possibly dying again maybe, and a career-best performance from Djimon Hounsou! All that and more in this legitimately compelling (and possibly too prophetic) story that has a fairly shocking narrative twist if you don't already know what the movie is about! In addition, Tim quickly recommends Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions, while Alex gushes about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Combining horror and film noir wasn't something audiences were used to seeing in the 90's. The elevator pitch here could be: “The Exorcist meets Chinatown,” and it would follow a hard-boiled private detective into the rarely seen underworld of magic and illusion. That's right, today, we're taking a look at Clive Barker's Lord Of Illusions!
Happy Noirvember! We've been meaning to do a horror/noir movie as a Noirvember special since our first year, so apparently the third year's the charm. So this year we're delighted to review our first Clive Barker feature on the pod: LORD OF ILLUSIONS [1995], with Clive adapting his own short story "The Last Illusion" from the Books of Blood. And even better, we're joined by a very special guest whose prose and comics work we've loved for a long time: Duane Swierczynski! We had an absolutely fabulous time chatting with Duane, and we really hope everyone enjoys the episode. But more importantly, we hope everyone takes a moment after the episode to consider donating to Evie's Holiday Book Drive, which is currently active until December 5th, 2022. Duane gives more details on the book drive in our episode at this timecode (01:44:10), but you can visit the link below for more details on The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation and to donate here: https://www.teameviefoundation.com/ You can find more detail on Duane's work and social media links via his Linktree here: https://linktr.ee/swierczy And as always, thanks so much for listening!!
Episode 258 - Tricks With Dicks MOVIES WE DISCUSSED - ANGEL HEART (1987) - LORD OF ILLUSIONS (1995)
Sailor and Kane review and recast one favorite, but albeit, a very flawed horror film from the 90s directed by Clive Barker, Lord of Illusions. We discuss our issues and just how close this horror noir was to being really good. This is is one of our first picks that could benefit from an updated take and we are here to give our take on it. Here are some things discussed during the episode: Where does this rank among Clive Barker adaptations? The "in your face" subtext. We take on sexual orientations. Kane fixates on tight pants. Somehow we get on a Taken tangent. We have a theory of why Marilyn Monroe was taken out.

Sincerest apologies for both the episode delay (life stuff) and audio quality of Jim's vocal track (forgot mic due to life stuff), but if you're able to forgive us for those hiccups, we are excited to have Council of Zoom's Kieran Fisher join us to discuss Clive Barker's third and final directorial effort, Lord of Illusions! The delayed release also means a delayed review of Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, so skip ahead to 20:25 if you're so over all the wokeness in the MCU and just want to hear a review of a horror/noir/thriller featuring a young, attractive Famke Jansen and a young, arguably more attractive young Scott Bakula. Harry D'Amour may be the perfect Lovecraftian protagonist, but he's the lead in a film that doesn't give him a worthy antagonist and that also isn't nearly as illusioney as it thinks it is. The practical effects are pretty effective, but making us believe that a cult leader with 8 followers in the middle of the desert is capable of destroying the world is not. The Corpse Cast is back with another episode that you should shove right up your ears as soon as possible! This time we're talking about Marilyn Manson's brand new album called We Are Chaos from 2020. We're also going to visit a never-before-scene of Quantum Leap when we talk Lord [...]
The Summer of Clive concludes, as we delve into something magical, with Lord of Illusions (1995). But is it true magic, or simply illusion? Scott Bakula LEAPS into the roll of Harry D'Amour, a detective with a nose for the occult, who tries to discover just that. For a fee, of course. But it has to be frustrating, trying to solve a case, when your efforts are constantly being disrupted by illusionists, vengeful magicians and filthy desert cult members. And it was supposed to be a nice, relaxing trip to L.A.!

The guys return to debate following the recent show at The Warehouse in Clarksville TN. After talking about the show, they struggle with the question of whether metal is being killed by clichés. Later, Brian hits Gomthog with the claim that music is all about feeling. Along the way, the guys play great songs by Overcrown, Of Serpents, and Lost In Silence! Credits: intro music by CONTRA, intro voice provided by Veronica Ortiz Rodriguez. “Lord Of Illusions” by Of Serpents (2016), “To The Wolves” by Lost In Silence (2016), and “Phoenix” by Overcrown (Monochrome, 2014) each used with permission from the artist. itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/great-metal-debate-podcast/id1037874814 www.facebook.com/thegreatmetaldebate www.youtube.com/channel/UCLC0ED1Ri2oNwBQW9All3Yw Have a question for the podcast, or a suggestion for an artist you'd like us to interview?
